>> yes, we were backstage. 6,000 pearls on that dress. >> i want you to know that i did say that was my favorite dress. i was staying in the same hotel but i did not do it. just wanted to get it out there. >> thanks for clearing that up. thanks for clearing that up. thank you. we'll begin with the latest on jihadi john. we're learning new details about the british educated executioner this morning as the international manhunt intensifies. abc's brian ross is in london for us this morning and has the latest. good morning, brian. >> reporter: well, good morning, robin. well, the family of the man now identified as jihadi john in this west london row house tries to understand how their college educated son became a killer. the families of the americans he's accused of killing this morning say justice may finally be done. with the identity now confirmed of the man whose piercing eyes and voice came to symbolize pure evil. >> our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people. >> reporter: u.s. authorities say that emwazi's reckoning is that much nearer. >> i would advise this guy to not buy any green bananas. i think he's going to find justice is going to find him. >> reporter: it was soon after the beheading of american james foley in august that u.s. and british authorities first figured out who the masked man was with his facial characteristics and british accent helping to give him away. >> i'm back, obama. >> reporter: now the parents of james foley say it's time for him to answer for what he did. >> it's about this, you know, whole culture of hate and brutality and all that isis is. i mean, if it hadn't been this young man it would have been another one. this young man is one of the very saddest, oh, it's just so tragic. >> reporter: emwazi's name was kept secret in hopes that he would communicate with his family here in west london where he grew up and reveal his location. >> the name is just a very small piece of the overall identity. the real goal is identifying where he is, who his network of associates is and then being able to take action on him inside a place like syria where we have a lack of resources. >> reporter: his family remains inside this morning, reeling from the news their son could be a mass murderer. >> i'm sure because this is my neighbor, i know dad, i know mom, i know the brother and sister. >> reporter: emwazi it turns out was on the radar of british security services for at least six years going back to 2009 and at one point he complained that mi5 tried to recruit him as an informant. this morning, however, he is one of the most wanted men in the world with a target on his back. robin. >> so, brian, he was on the radar for six years. the paris attackers were also known, so what does this is a say about our ability to track these known threats? >> reporter: well, talking to british and u.s. security officials, the fact is there are hundreds, if not thousands of people who are under suspicion, and there are just too many to keep a 24-hour watch on so in the case of emwazi he was able to slip out of this country and head to syria and join isis, robin. >> all right, brian, thanks. there is no official word from the obama administration on the identity of this executioner. but abc's pierre thomas spoke with attorney general eric holder about the hunt to find him and he joins us now. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: good morning, george. holder refused to confirm the name of jihadi john saying it might affect the critical efforts to find him but he gave a blunt assessment of the threat from isis radicals calling them barbarians. >> i think there's something to be said for holding accountable for getting at the people who are responsible for these barbaric acts. >> reporter: and holder in his final days in office shows his disdain for isis, visibly angry by the death of kayla mueller, who died while being held hostage by the group. isis put out a statement saying that the west or the jordanians were involved in her killing through an air assault. is that true? >> it's a lie. she was the best of what this country is all about. her unnecessary death at the hands of these barbarians is something that -- that weighs heavily on me. >> reporter: holder said he was deeply concerned about how effectively isis is using social media. he suggested isis is a clear and present danger to the homeland. robin. >> okay, pierre, thank you. going to move on now to the weather. arctic temperatures hitting millions of americans this morning. everyone east of the rockies and that dangerous storm moving out west. abc's rob marciano is in for ginger and he is in philadelphia for us this morning. good morning, rob. >> good morning, robin. we are inside at least for now where it's 15 degrees outside we will take it. down across north carolina still a big mess down there with the snow that rolled through there, trees down blocking some roadways and icy conditions as far south as alabama. and that's going to continue to be an issue today because the temperatures are not going to warm much above freezing. certainly not this morning. take a look at some of the temps and the wind chills that much of the eastern two-thirds of america will be dealing with. minus 13 in buffalo. 12 below in detroit. 16 below in chicago and 20 below in denver and we have a storm out in denver that's going to be rolling across the plains this weekend, a good swath of snow, quick mover but from kansas to chicago and even parts of new england as we go through sunday we'll see snow with this and beneficial rains and snow across parts of california. they will take it. we are inside the philadelphia convention center. this is a manmade forest behind me. i will take that and tell you more about why we're here. we're going to turn now to a big win for one of the nfl's best players. a judge has overturned the suspension of adrian peterson who was sidelined over a child abuse case. it could have him playing again but the nfl says it will appeal and paula faris here with the latest. good morning, paula. >> good morning, george. you know, this is a back and forth battle between the league and adrian peterson with neither side backing down. it may be the nfl's off-season but adrian peterson scoring a huge victory. >> 78 yards on peterson. >> reporter: a u.s. district court judge overturning the running back's suspension thursday potentially clearing the way for him to be reinstated to the league earlier than expected. the judge ruling the nfl and league arbitrator overreached their authority by suspending him back in november after peterson pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of reckless assault after authorities said he hit his 4-year-old son with a switch. >> this is a blow to the nfl because it cuts at their authority. the one thing about the nfl is that it loves control and now you have a judge saying that the nfl does not have as much control over this situation as it wanted. >> reporter: the attorney for peterson and the players union arguing he was unfairly punished under the nfl's new personal conduct policy. >> the judge ruled that the nfl cannot go back and retroactively apply the new personal conduct policy. >> reporter: peterson feeling optimistic after his hearing earlier this month. >> i feel like i got a fair hearing and i just really appreciate all the support from my fans. >> reporter: the nfl players association telling abc news this is a, quote, victory and that when rules are violated our union always stands up to protect our players' rights, but peterson's victory could be short-lived. the nfl telling abc news the judge's order is "incorrect" and they've already filed an appeal. and here's where it stands, the league has now placed peterson on the exempt list but when he returns he'll be the highest paid running back in the league. the vikings have indicated they want him back but have stopped short of saying it will happen, george. a lot of back and forth right now? we'll keep a close eye on it. thank you, paula. to amy with the other top stories. good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news from southern missouri disturbing reports coming in overnight that nine people were shot and killed near the small town of tyrone and houston, missouri police responding to as many as six different crime scenes. earlier residents were told to stay inside and police are still trying to pinpoint a motive for the shooting and the identities of those victims. no charges have been field his attorney says jose ramirez became disoriented and made a wrong turn. we begin with a security scare this morning outside the u.s. consulate in istanbul, turkey. a man claiming to have a bomb started making threats. one of osama bin laden's most trusted lieutenants has been convicted on terror charges stemming from the 1998 u.s. embassy bombings in africa. prosecutors in new york say khaled al fawwaz helped him carry out those attacks. 12 americans were among the 224 killed. he now faces life in prison. and with tonight's midnight deadline fast approaching, it looks like there is a deal on capitol hill to keep funding the homeland security department at least for now. house republicans are proposing a three-week extension. the senate expected to go along, critics say this only kicks the can down the road, though. the issue has been tied to president obama's controversial immigration policy. and a bizarre scene in washington, one senator used the recent snow to bolster his argument about climate change. republican james inhofe highlighted a government report that found last year was the warmest on record. then he used a prop to demonstrate how cold it's been lately. >> it's a snowball, and that just from outside here, so it's very, very cold out, very unseasonable so here, mr. president, catch this. uh-huh. >> inhofe acknowledges the earth's climate is changing but doesn't believe humans are to blame. a violent clash forced a nine-hour lockdown at a maximum security prison in south carolina. take a look at some of the damage. officials say inmates assaulted seven guards who had tried to search a prisoner. the situation was finally brought under control last night. and an investigation is now under way. well, a passing to note. earl lloyd, the pioneering first black player in the nba has died. lloyd played nine seasons winning one title before being inducted into the hall of fame. he was 86 years old. and finally, a question for you. what food do you crave the most? >> reporter: erica kinsman sharing her story in the upcoming film "the hunting ground," which says it seeks to expose the shocking epidemic of violence and the institutional cover-ups sweeping college campuses across america. >> it doesn't really make sense. >> you know, here's a family that really believed in law enforcement, really believed in their school and institution, could not imagine it would not do the right thing by them. >> reporter: kinsman telling the filmmakers that when she identified her alleged rapist she was told by the lead detective this is a huge football town. you really should think long and hard about whether you want to press charges or not. winston has maintained his innocence, was never charged and was cleared by fsu. the state attorney calling her testimony problematic. >> no charges will be filed against anyone in this case. >> reporter: and as for the subsequent treatment kinsman endured after she came forward -- it was horrifying to watch actually to watch what happened to her as she stepped forward. >> yeah, the reprisals she experienced, she received all kind of very aggressive comments on social media. >> reporter: while florida state university said it did everything it could to support kinsman as an alleged victim, the reaction from the community proved to be too much. >> some girls are jealous. wanted to be like a part of this team. you know. she was a liar. >> reporter: she was driven out of fsu, the school she loved. >> yeah. >> reporter: what is the fundamental impact you hope this film has? it's called "the vanilla ice project." this is your fourth season. >> fifth. >> fifth. what can we expect for the new season? >> we're doing an 8,000-square-foot house on the ocean and in palm beach and it's -- you know, it was wrecked. we removed over 300 trees. it's just, you know, just neglected and now we're turning it from zero to hero. it's going to be gorgeous putting a jellyfish aquarium in here, infinity pool that just has a wet edge all the way around so the water is at the same level you walk on, observatory, glass atrium. coffee bar and a fitness room right outside of the master bedroom, infinity bathtubs into a rock basin and all kinds of cool -- >> that sounds incredibly high-end but your philosophy is actually one fof affordability and have three of your projects that hopefully viewers can take away from. should we walk over and check them out? >> absolutely. >> come over here. these spin and could fall so that's live tv. do you want to do that for me? >> we'll go low with it. >> this is a mirror that you created using store bought molding. >> that's right. >> like a plain old mirror you can get for next to nothing at a hardware store and then simple molding. how did you put it together? >> less than 50 bucks. got molding here. you can get this at any dollar store, thrift store, whatever and you can decorate this with all kinds of bedazzled things or anything but you just need a mitre saw to cut some of these corners, glue, little nail gun but have fun with it. a great project. >> a lot of people get intimidated because maybe they weren't the best in shop class, i'm speaking about myself, but these are not hard projects. >> this is very easy. i mean, this will take you 30 minutes to do and another, you know, 30 minutes to paint it, but if you want to bedazzle it and put all kinds of different jewelry on it. >> keep it simple. this is fun too. something that's very trendy right now, the idea of antique glass and one of these lamps is $250, and one of them you did for under $50. tell us which one is the expensive one. >> okay this, is the expensive one at retail you can get for $250. this is looking glass and what you do is you'll tape the glass, it's just a regular piece of glass, you can spray vinegar and water in there and activates and then you have looking glass paint and you spray it down in there and it'll create this like age defect and bubbles in here and it activates with the vinegar, you do it two or three times, and you're off to the races, costs you $50 compared to 250. >> just to clarify you bought a lamp and went to the hardware store or home design store and bought this sort of mirrored paint. >> right. >> you mix it with vinegar and that reacts to create the antique finish. >> that's it. put any lamp on it. >> you spray -- it's actually quite easy. you sort of just do it until you find the mottled look that you like. this one is lara-proof. then finally, guys, we only a couple of seconds. ooh. ow. i told you something would happen. this is actually a frame. so you find an old mirror and took the mirror out of it. it's a thrift store mirror and put plywood in it, painted it and turned it into a coffee table. >> under $100. you can make it a coffee table, paint it. you can make it rustic. you can even put chalkboard paint on it and have a great project with the kids. >> that's fun. do a >> i think so. it's confusing. it's about the yin and yang of good and evil and the confusing appearances, and just when you think you know someone is evil, it turns out they're a good person, and the good guy turns out to be evil, and it keeps flipping. >> the twin brothers. >> exactly. >> and you find yourself, about halfway through and i'm like i said, thinking, okay, is this one really the good one or is this the bad one -- >> then i did my job. >> and also sociopath and we hear and talk about that a little bit more -- i don't know if it's any more prevalent than it ever was or we just talk about it more. >> i'm not sure if we talk about it more. we identify with it more. supposedly sociopaths can't be changed or cured, and we've all come across them in business and dating, in friends, sometimes in our families and they're very destructive, very deceptive, very seductive and convincing, and most of us have fallen into some sort of trap at one point and it's a fascinating phenomenon. so i had fun playing with it in the book. >> i can tell. your 139th book, and, you know, where do you come up -- and thank goodness you come up with so many different ideas. >> no idea. they fall out of nowhere, and i'm very grateful when they do and something snags my interest that i'm off own running. >> you have so many admirers and followers that are always asking for more. you write about four books a year because your fans can't get enough. >> well, the fans have been asking for more, so we've just gone from three a year to four a year, which is a big, exciting thing right now. >> and on a typewriter from 1946. >> i paid $20 for that typewriter at the beginning of my career, and i'm getting my money out of it. >> you certainly are and longhand but you just are not about the new technology. >> i do it for e-mail. half the time i send them to the wrong people and the other i delete them so try to stay away from it. >> it's safer that way. such a big, loving family. nine children. three of your daughters are into fashion, in fact, you're heading to paris for fashion week. >> well, i'm heading to paris because i live there part of the time, but i'm very lucky. some of my daughters are coming over. three of my daughters are in fashion and are stylists and fashion consultants, so i get a lot of advice, we'll call it nicely, i get a lot of you're leaving the house in that? >> oh, we're good at that. >> i have one that's very diplomatic. she said, i don't think that's your profile. >> but you really had -- that was your first passion. >> it was. >> you studied fashion to begin with. >> even as a kid i wanted to be a fashion designer, and somehow i missed the boat and started writing in my teens and wrote my first book at 19, but the bug is genetic because three of my five daughters -- my oldest is a psychologist in pediatric oncology. my youngest has shocking pink hair and has her own style, but i have three who are professional stylists. >> wow. well we want to put up some of your styles because you're very bold. i like that. you take chances -- >> they made me be very conservative today. i'm not allowed to embarrass the family on national television. they all love you. they said, don't be rude to robin. >> oh, i adore them too. we made them into paperback novels. one is called "unbearably yours," a teddy bear coat. what were you thinking? >> you know, that's a good question, and i think that she's going to discover that as we move forward because right now she thinks it's with a man or with her son or like -- >> something tells me that we're going to find out that a man could not find your inner happiness. >> exactly. goes a little deeper than that. >> yeah. i had a feeling. meanwhile, mr. gold banished to new york city. you're all trying to recover from your losses, and then he sends this trifecta of evil in the form of these queens of darkness. tell me about them. >> they are phenomenal. they are a ton of fun, we have cruella, ursula and maleficent is making a how she comes back, you will have to see, awesome and fun to watch. >> evil is always fun. must be fun to play. >> it's so fun. it's so fun and, you know, regina has crossed over so she's more good these days but i think what we're going to see with her she's learning to find the balance, embrace her darkness and kind of use both when necessary. >> all right. well, time for a quick game. lightning round calling it which witchy wins?
