thanks for joining us on this sunday may 10th. let's start with a quick look at the weather on this mother's day. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning carolyn. happy mother's day to you all out there. we are looking at low clouds and fog across the bay. it's already cleared in the east bay valleys. we will have sunshine here later on in santa cruz. a high of 64 degrees. it will be school, 50 half moon bay. 4-mile visibility there and 55 in san carlos. and here's a look at the fog. the onshore flow keeps it cool at the coast but notice we are clear in parts of our east bay but notice the cloud cover from vallejo over into hayward and of course, on the coast and through marin and san mateo. but we have 60s and 70s on top. a mimed day. in fact, the warmest day out of the next seven is today. we will talk about the cool down coming up. developing news. the marin county sheriff's deputies are searching for the person who shot someone in marin city. it happened on cole drive near drake avenue around 2:00 this morning. the sheriff said the victim was shot several times. no word on their condition. deputies have not released any information about possible suspects. >> and we have developing news in san jose. firefighters put out a fire that spread from one house to another on south second street near interstate 280. that fire broke out around 2:00 this morning. the first crews on the scene had to call for additional help. fire reached three alarms. residents escaped from their burning homes quickly and no one was hurt. >> it was smoke, i looked out the window and seen the fire under the stairs under the laundry room so i got everybody out and told everybody to get out. >> we had two working structure fires at the same time. crews did an amazing job of making entry, extinguishing the initial fire and moving it to the other building and extinguishing that one, as well. >> the red cross is now helping eight people who were driven from their homes by that fire. a traffic mess, bridge and bart closers, added to a full schedule of events around the bay area this weekend. all of that leads to lots of cars on the road and plenty of inpatience. here's live look from the san mateo bridge cam. work began late friday night. traffic headaches have kicked in all weekend long. leslie brinkley tells us more. >> this tangled mess of traffic originated with the shut down of all lanes of lanes of traffic on the bridge since friday night. first time the entire bridge has been resurfaced since 1967. so saturday people piled on had to the bay bridge as their alternate route. whether a day trip with mom to the city or 6:00 giants game, it was gridlock. >> i left my house at three and got here at five. we ate all our snacks for the game before we got here. >> a 2-hour drive from livermore? >> yes. >> right when we hit the 24/580 to interchange it was really bad. >> like rush hour? >> actually worse than rush hour. >> you drove from sacramento. was it a bad drive? >> not until we got to berkeley. >> and then -- >> then the bridge, it took us a while to get over the bridge. the other direction wasn't any better. driving between news stories. our abc7 news stories clocked in 2.25 hours getting from san mateo to oakland. by night fall things seemed to calm down. but expect another rough drive for mother's day on sunday. the san mateo bridge will reopen monday at 5:00 a.m. the best part everyone gets to look forward to memorial day weekend. that's when they can to it all over again. san mateo bridge will be closed another few days to finish the work. in san francisco, leslie brinkley, abc7 news. and because of the closer the bay bridge was packed all day yesterday. we can see the same thing again today. this is a live look at the bay bridge. it should remain busy through tonight. and another closer this weekend, bart service has been suspended between the fruitvale and coliseum airport stations. a crew is working on a rail replacement project. a bus bridge will help riders travel between the stations. bart says there could be 30-minute delays. service is expected to be running again tomorrow morning. >> parking fees are increasing on june 1st at three bart stations. the price is going up 50 cents at the two concord stations and the milbrae station. san jose police have arrested a man suspected of firing a gun toward a home. the search for the man began early last night. it forced officers to block traffic, even keep residents away from their homes for a few hours. drivers and residents faced roadblocks near branham lane and vista park drive. police told us no one was hurt in the shooting. >> supporters of a mother and daughter killed in a crash last weekend are outraged the suspect has not yet been charged. the family of esperanza marales and her 14-month-old daughter juli attended a community gathering in livermore yesterday. mothers against drunk driving organized the event. police say 35-year-old brian jones was leaving the wine country festival, that's brian jones, before the crash. and those in attendance are outraged he has not been formally charged. he is currently out on bail. >> this is a crash, not an accident. when you drink and get behind on bail it is a weapon, and it kills. >> angry? >> well, he's a murderer. >> in response, livermore police tell abc7 news be patient, it is coming. >> dozens of people who live at an oakland residential hotel returned home yesterday. bacteria in the drinking water at the imperium hotel on 13th street force the them out last week. officials tell abc7 news the residence were allowed back yesterday afternoon. the pipes were flushed with chlorine and were retested before people got the okay to return to that hotel. the warriors are backed into a corner. they need three wins in the next four games to move on in the nba playoffs. as seen on abc7 last night, the grizzlies outmuscled and outshot the warriors. mvp steph curry scored 23 points but did not shoot well from the field. the grizzlies punished golden state inside, fending off a late warriors come back to win 99-89. >> you are who you are at this point. and we are going to do what we do, but we've got to do it better. >> looking forward to the challenge of getting to that level in game four, setting the tone, and hopefully it will be a different outcome. >> the next game is tomorrow in memphis. larry beil will have highlights from last night's game and more reaction later in sports. warriors fans, like the team, hope tomorrow will bring a different result. abc7 news was at street food in san francisco. that was one of last night's official warriors viewing venues. the atmosphere was festive, but it was a tough loss to watch. abc7 news reporter laura anthony found a similar story with disappointed members of dub nation in walnut creek. [chanting] >> this time for every up, there was a down. too many, as it turned out. it was a packed house at walnut creek stadium hub. >> it's a rough game. memphis is playing their game. they controlled the tempo the whole game. >> we got the mvp trophy for curry, and he's playing a little bit zero ball. if we stick to the offense we ran all season, maybe we would win the last two games. >> are you concerned? >> i think maybe the next game might be ours. [cheers and applause] >> this is the warrior nation that understands there's always a good comeback in a team that's already come so far. >> the next game i hope to see a lot more splash brothers. i haven't seen the splash brothers that i've seen all season. and maybe a bit of rain later this week. one of my favorite moms will be along shortly with a full accuweather forecast. >> several republican presidential hopefuls made their pitch to voters during this weekend's freedom summit in south carolina. south carolina will hold one of next year's earliest primaries. former hewlett packard ceo aimed her criticism as former secretary of state hillary clinton and instead of her gop contenders. this morning on "meet the press" she said she hopes her background as washington outsider and business leader appeals to voters. >> i understand how bureaucracies work and that's important because our government has become a vast, huge, bloated, corrupt bureaucracy. i understand technology, which is an important rule, and i understand executive decision making which is make tough call in a tough time for which you are prepared to be held accountable. something at least hillary clinton doesn't have a track record of. >> the jabs at hillary clinton followed the former first lady's fundraising trip to san francisco on thursday. do you like to sip while your hair gets snipped? there's a new push to allow beauty salons and barbershops in california to serve alcohol without a liquor license, but not everyone is on board. >> we have licenses because this is a question of public safety and public health. >> the fight to get booze out of these businesses tonight at 11:00 on abc7 news. soccer legend pele is recovering after having prostate surgery in his native brazil. his doctors found so signs of -- no signs of cancer. the 74-year-old had surgery after being diagnosed with an enlarged prostate. this came after he was treated for kidney stones late last year. pele helped lead brazil to three world cup titles and he's credited with helping soccer gain more popularity here in the u.s., thanks for his playing for the new york cosmos pack in the 1970's. >> and also in soccer news the u.s. women's team will host ireland in san francisco. today's match marks the second of four series to prepare for the world cup. the u.s. opens world cup play on june 8th in winnipeg, canada. they face australia to begin the tournament. happening today, some of the world's most talented cyclists will hit the road to begin the am-gen tour of california. the first stage will run for 126 miles through the sacramento area. tomorrow it's off to the sierra foothills and then to san jose on tuesday. that's when the riders will cover more than 105 miles during the tour's only stop here in the bay area. the race finishes in los angeles next weekend. fresh california strawberries are ripening early this year because of warm weather connected to our state's historic drought. but farmers are growing those berries with less water and that's thanks to the high-tech help they are getting from your drought-busting tax dollars. abc7 news reporter jonathan bloom reports from watsonville. >> we started farming in watsonville in 1952. >> since then a lot has changed on gary's strawberry farm, like the irrigation. >> you turn off that one row with a cork and then you would move to the next one. >> how much water is enough? >> i would check the moisture with my finger and the firmness of the soil and that's how we have done it for many years. >> in this field of organic strawberries, there's one thing inorganic, a high-powered solar substitute for his finger. >> it changed the way we irrigate, the way we fertilize. >> tackometers have been around for centuries, but ones that talk to your smartphone are new. >> it's below 5 centibars, turn off irrigation. >> it's helping conserve the precious and dwindling supply of fresh groundwater. >> we are close to the ocean here. so if we were to keep drawing out the groundwater, eventually it would be replaced and salt water is the closest thing. >> it's all far more advanced than the old technology but far more expensive. the eight cost a total of $36,000. fortunately the growers didn't have to shoulder it themselves and they got help from the folks in sacramento. >> they paid for 50% of it and we paid for the other 50. it was huge. i don't think we would have done it if we didn't go the help from that grant money. >> thanks for the funds, he is also attending state classes on high-tech water saving. nearby the felton farmers market, some shoppers said it's a good use of public money. >> like everything else in life, change happens, and adaptation needs to happens. >> but that's an expensive transition so i think expecting farmers to pay for them by themselves is not realistic. >> he said getting the money has made him feel like part farmer and part lobbyist. >> you have to be proactive about it. some growers don't think it's worth it. i do. >> to ensure there's enough water to farm these strawberry fields forever. in watsonville, jonathan bloom abc7 news. >> well, we might get a little bit of rain this week. >> yeah. just maybe to get the plants a little drink of water. but temperatures are going to be really come it's a cool week ahead. today the warmest day. that sounds kind of ridiculous considering we've been about two to five degrees below average, but we have 70s on the way for some. the south bay is bright end one but we have delays at sfo about 36 minutes due to low ceilings and partly sunny skies. low 60s at the airport today. maybe 60 san francisco. here is san jose. it's getting brighter and the numbers are coming up very slowly. 56. you go above the marine layer and temperatures in the 60s. with the in investigation, once that evaporates we will look for the 70s over the east bay hills. it's 50 in the city. half moon bay about four or five mile visibility. here's mt. tam. it will be a cool day in the 60s for most here unless you are way to the north. santa rosa 54. concord with the sunshine 57. livermore 57. and by the delta you've got that breeze with numbers in the mid-50s there. 50 petaluma and here is sfo. pretty cloudy. it's been that way. we will see a few peaks of sun. cool to mild for mother's day and we look for the chance of rain not only thursday. it increases friday and saturday. the cans is slim, but it's out there. and it will keep the temperatures down. two areas of low pressure will allow for that to happen. here they are. and with the cooler week ahead this is the one that allows for the temperatures to come down another five degrees tomorrow or so. and also into tuesday. the rain stays north throughout the oregon-california border and we will look for that fog to be kind of swept away. it's not going to warm us up. we will see just 50s. i don't think we will even see 70s tomorrow. but here's a look at the cut off low coming. this is the first low. by wednesday we are still looking at partly cloudy skies. there's the cut off low by thursday and friday you notice most of the energy looks like it wants to go into southern california but we could get a few showers here south of frandsen into the mountains. so we will wait and see. as for today it's another day like yesterday with sunshine revealing itself here. upper 60s mill about peseta's and sunnyvale. sunny in santa cruz. look for 67 today in redwood city. all the 50s from half moon bay and pacifica. looking at afternoon sun san mateo a cool 64 for you. 60 downtown. low 60s south of san francisco with only 56 bodega bay and into ocean beach stinson beach, a chilly afternoon at the coast. 70. and low to mid-60s should do it here. a cool with a few patches of fog lingering through the noon hour or so. 62 berkeley. you head inland and this is pretty much the only area that's enjoying a sunny and dry afternoon. 74 pittsburgh. and san ramon. looking to mid-70s today and tomorrow cooler, some drizzle. the afternoon will be sunny but it will be quite brisk out there through the middle of the week and even cool we're that cut-off low by the end of the week. you can see what's (music) introducing the one-and-only volkswagen golf sportwagen. the sportier utility vehicle. >> an enormous great white shark has become a social media star after suddenly surfacing near the new jersey shore. in 2012 the sharp nicknamed mary lee was tagged with a tracker. most of the months she's been in the gulf of mexico, and this week she appeared near long beach island where the shark attacks occurred that inspired the movie "jaws." thousands are tracking her movements and following an unofficial mary lee twitter page. authorities in wisconsin are on the lookout for a kangaroo napper. someone stole a 5-month-old joey and several goats from the zoo's winter holding facility. you are looking at video of adult kangaroos at the zoo. the baby hasn't even developed fur yet. zookeepers are worried because the baby needs its mother for its first year of life. much more ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news. tornadoes tearing through the plains states with more severe weather on the way today. and residents work to improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables in a low income neighborhood in san francisco. how one man is being honored for his leadership. this is abc7 news. >> welcome back, everyone. and happy mother's day. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi carolyn, happy mother's day to you. and even though this is gloomy pretty nice shot from santa cruz with the low clouds. sunshine on on the way with mid-60s. a warmer beach day. santa cruz is looking at milder weather, but ocean beach in the 50s today. 57 in san jose with partly cloudy skies. 52 in oakland with the clouds all over the bay. you can see that, and with the onshore push it's going to be a cool day today. and within the 11 to 1:00 hour we will reveal a mostly sunny day today. but look at all the clouds here from emeryville. looking at temperatures mainly in the 60s today. some 70s east of the caldecott tunnel. the full forecast in a few minutes. carolyn. >> thank you lisa. you know all about this. 30 million americans facing another day of heavy rain, lightning and possible tornadoes. severe weather has already claimed one life after a tornado leveled much of a small texas farming town. >> here a closer view of the deadly tornadoes. >> at least one person killed in texas, three injured and many others unaccounted for. >> i lived in cisco for over ten years now and i haven't seen anything like this. >> dozens of homes and businesses damaged. >> the first thing i saw was my roof was off and on the truck, and then all of the tree damage. >> and the conditions proving difficult for authorities to begin recovery operations. [siren] >> this mother's day weekend no mercy from mother nature. >> look, there's another one on left! >> at least 40 reports of tornadoes overnight. >> it's crossing the road in front of us. >> in two days more than 30 million people threatened as severe storms go throughout great plains. >> it's getting stronger. >> looking at that rotation? it's not showing up on doppler but here in person it certainly is. >> we chased storms along the oklahoma-kansas border. >> the dark cloud has some rotation going on. developing more of a wall cloud structure. we may need to high tail it out of here. >> this potential tornado spinning right overhead. >> whoa! that was close. >> and getting a little too close for comfort. >> we better be ready to move. >> the storm is unleashing twisters in some case twos at a time. >> oh, two twins! >> relentless hail. and ferocious storms spawning 70 miles per hour wind gusts. in colorado one of the state's hardest hit, a silver lining as an unexpected rainbow sneaks up on a funnel cloud. >> the threat for severe weather moves off to the east and stretches to the north and south. involving even more populated areas and then another threat as we go through monday. the brightest minds in the tornado forecasting business no doubt will be on task today. abc news, norman, oklahoma. >> a tropical storm has weakened slightly after making landfall in myrtle beach, south carolina earlier this morning. this is what conditions look like in rightsville beach, north carolina earlier. storm has created dangerous condition on beaches in both north and south carolina. right now tropical storm anna has sustained winds of 30 to 40 miles an hour. coastal communities have built up mounds of sand to keep the water from reaching homes. at least one college commencement ceremony has been forced indoors. developing news, police in mississippi have captured three people suspected in the shooting deaths last night of two police officers. at least one of the suspects opened fire on an officer after he stopped an s.u.v. in hattiesburg. another officer rushed to assist the first police officer and then he died after a shootout. police urged nearby residents to stay inside their homes during an intense manhunt for the suspects. again, three people have been captured. here at home there's a big push to improve access to fresh fruits and vegetables in a low income neighborhood which has dozens of liquor stores, but does not have a full-service supermarket. it's happening in the tenderloin district in san francisco. abc7 news anchor cheryl jennings takes us there to meet a store owner who is leading the way and is being honored for his leadership. there are changes every day. whatever is available in the market we put parts of it here you know. >> he owns a beautiful grocery store called radmund's produce market that would fit in any neighborhood. radmund's has a great look outside it has glass doors and allows people to see what's inside. lots of organic fruits and vegetables and shelves stocked with healthy food and he has expanded to a brand new area of fresh meat. and you won't find any alcohol sales here. that is almost unheard of in this neighborhood. this is the tenderloin. one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in san francisco. there are more than 70 liquor stores in a square mile area. >> you step outside of the store, go to the left or right there are stores all over. and they are all liquor stores. >> radmund is the first food store owner to work with a healthy corner store coalition, founded by the tenderloin neighborhood. radmund, a father of seven doesn't drink. he's from yemen and he wants to serve his communities well. so he partnered with the coalition to revamp his store inside and out, had and they even helped with marketing. >> they offered the new shelving. they said we will put new fixtures in the store so this is all new. in return we got more fruits and vegetables, dried and fresh. >> most people here don't have cars. they take the bus or a cab, if they can afford it. and that's why their work is so important. it owns 30 apartment buildings in the tenderloin, providing low income housing for people like this mother. radmund's is a gift for her. she doesn't have a car so shopping for her family is challenging. >> i take the bus, and with my kids, and when i come back i come with the three bags, four bags and my kids, watching my kids. and now it's, wow. >> much better? (music) introducing the one-and-only volkswagen golf sportwagen. the sportier utility vehicle. san francisco's sunday streets program heads to the mission district today. sunday streets allows people of all ages to stroll or pedal along pavement usually reserved for cars. today sunday streets will run along valencia street from 26th street to mccoppin hub plaza from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. you can find a number of activities to enjoy, including games and music. and don't let the cool weather deter you. just throw on a little jacket a sweater, something like that. >> right. just at about 50 degrees right now. upper 50s today but there's sunshine in the east bay. look at the flag blowing. west wind at 9 downtown with 50 degrees. we will look for the clouds to lift slightly here. but also looking at a pretty cool week ahead with numbers hard-pressed to reach the 70s. i'll explain coming up. >> thank you lisa. also ahead the war yes, sir get dominated in memphis as the grizzlies move within two victories of eliminating the doubles. larry beil has the highlights and player reaction coming up in sports. in sports the giants meet the marlins in the series finale hoping to gain a split. first pitch at at&t park is at 1:05 this afternoon. the nba playoffs continue here on abc7 at 12:30. cavaliers face a must-win game against the bulls at united center. chicago leads cleveland two games to one in the best-of-seven series. last night here on abc7 the warriors dug themselves a 2-1 deficit, dropping game three in memphis. here's sports director larry beil with the highlights in this morning's sports. good morning, everybody. the warriors-grizzlies series. it's been billed as splash brothers against smash brothers and so far smash is dominating. for the second game in a row the warriors got pounded down low and could not make a jump shot. the masked man, mike conley. he was a star in game two. not a huge factor in game three. but mark gasol was a beasts down low. 16 of 21 in the first half. connelly with 11. and they were up 17 in the first half, the griz were. iron man salutes you. steph curry only 2 of 10 from beyond the arc. a quiet 23. that was a high degree of difficulty. warriors down 16 at the half. trying to close the gap. klay thompson with the 3 makes it a 7-point game. zach randolph, z-bo had 10 points in the third quarter. there to beat the shot clock and the reverse. continued finished with a team high 22. draymond green, one of seventeen turnovers, tony allen the other way. that finishes things up. draymond a nightmare of a game. grizzlies win and take a 2-1 series lead. abc7's mike shumann with more from memphis. >> despite back-to-back losses and falling behind 2-1 to memphis in the series the warriors remained upbeat in the locker room afterwards. >> it's a learning process for us. we are a very young team. this is kind of our moment of truth. you have to learn in the postseason. all those little mistakes, especially against a veteran team like memphis, you are going pay if you make them. and we've got to clean those up.row. >> two bad games in a row. we will make some adjustments but we aren't going to go out there and play a whole different game. we will be all right. >> seems like you were pressing a little bit when you came out tonight. >> yeah. i think we can play better and we will be better again. we will make the adjustments necessary. we can all play better. but we are all in this as a team. we still believe we can win the series. this is what the playoffs are all about. >> and we have to play better and play more under control and just be ourselves. that's the challenge for us to get back to that. >> game four now becomes the most important game in the series, trying to regain home-court advantage. reporting in memphis with the warriors, mike shumann, abc7 sports. >> game four almost a must-win for golden state. on to baseball. madison bumgarner struck out ten for the giants. that was the good news, but one big inning by the marlins spelled doom for the giants. comic book legend stanley in the house for superheroes and comics night. justin maxwell showing off superpower in left field. spectacular grab! i'm larry beil. >> and the mother's day weather is going to be cool around the bay today. >> right. but one of the warmest days we will see. so that gives you an idea of what's on the way. a couple more areas of low pressure that will enhance or reinforce our cool air especially the beginning of the week, tomorrow. right now you are looking at all the fog up and down the coastline from marin to san mateo. it will pull back around santa cruz. you will get some sunshine here. and it's beginning to pull back across the bay, as well. here is the cloudy shots that we've been featuring. fill looks nice out there with the 50s and to the south to west wind today it will be just in the mid-60s. but one of the warmer beaches that you will find along the coast. 67 san jose. partly cloudy for you right now. cool spot is san francisco at 50. oakland is at 52. and the marine layer from mt. tam, 2,000 feet. temperatures below in the 50s. temperatures above in the 60s. so that's our inversion. and once we see those clouds evaporate, we will get warmer. it's already getting warmer where the sun has been shining. 56 by the delta, 57 concord. livermore sunny skies for you. santa rosa, still cloudy and napa a cool 52 degrees. sfo, some delays with the low clouds. the 70s back for you tomorrow around pleasanton and concord and walnut creek. the rest of us will enjoy 60s. a little breezy out there. by thursday we are tracking a cut-off low that will mainly be along the coast so the chance of showers is slim friday into saturday. but it will be with us. here is the first system that won't reach us. this is what is going to bring the cool breezes and start the work week off very chilly. in fact, we will be lucky if we hit 70 tomorrow. it will wipe the fog away. this influences us monday and tuesday and then it moves to the east of us. we look for a partly cloudy wednesday boy, it's going to be a drizzly, gray start again, then we will look for cooler weather with the second low. 80 in yosemite today with low 80s all the way out in sacramento. that gives you an idea how cool this air mass is. even though the on shore flow is just about moderate. but at the coast you will feel those gusty winds. 73 in los angeles today. very sunfully there. and around the bay notice the cool highs with 63 in oakland, 66 in san mateo. up in the north bay when you clear it should be pretty pleasant with 72 in santa rosa. 70 palo alto. and there's your sunny beach in santa cruz. only 56 half moon bay and ocean beach. so if you are headed into the city this afternoon, it's going to be cool. look for temperatures just in the upper 50s. partly cloudy skies with that west wind up to about 17 miles an hour. and the temperature really staying put throughout the afternoon. mother's day across the bay, 60s and 70s around the bay. the sun sets at 8:05. making for a pretty nice afternoon. the accuweather seven-day forecast then the cool start next week, and then we will look for temperatures to come down. coolest thursday and friday. maybe some showers and even into next saturday. so we will see. but it's interesting nonetheless. >> we can only hope with the little bit of rain there. >> right. >> all right. thank you, lisa. volunteers are hoping that dozens of new trees will make part of the bay area a little safer. abc7 news was in east oakland for a community planting. for the past five years the sierra club has targeted high crime areas around the city replacing concrete and asphalt with budding trees. volunteers say it helps the environment and it improves neighborhoods. >> areas, clear evidence that having a tree covering areas is not only good for people's health it also reduces crime. >> it was hard getting up this morning. but being able to be out here and meeting new people and being able to do something good for your community is all worth it. >> donations paid for all the trees and the planting materials. up next, a fun day is ahead for hundreds of kids at great (music) hey!
