gray and mild this morning. 59 to about 61 degrees. as we head through your 12-hour day planner, we'll stay in the 60s at the coast, 70 to 74 around the bay from noon to 4:00. 76 to 83 inland. we'll become breezy and below average. enjoy the 60s and 70s. a delightful evening on the way. let's get more news with jessica. >> thank you. >> we want to get back to breaking news in oakland. b.a.r.t. police giving an update on a search for a man wanted for two unprovoked attacks. tiffany wilson is live for us at the lake merritt station. what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, jessica. yes, that pressonference is beginning right as i speak, so i'm going to send it over to you so you can get a live listen in on the latest updates. >> let me first introduce chief ed alvarez. ed. >> good morning. brought you here together this morning to discuss a couple assaults we had occur from thursday and again saturday evening. we're looking for appears to be the same thursday night assaulted a patron on the train with a pair of bolt cutters. and the second assault, which occurred on saturday evening, was an unprovoked attack as well on a train of the same suspect we believe ended up punching a patron of ours that was standing on the train just waiting for the next stop. description and photograph in hopes that our patrons and people in the community could hopefully recognize him. so our investigators who are working this case diligently could go out and make the arrests and get him off the streets. >> again, you're getting a live listen right now at the news conference discussing the suspect who has had two unprovoked and violent attacks on b.a.r.t. trains, on thursday and on sunday. this is happening right now at the lake merritt oakland station. we'll continue to gather more information about this and update you throughout the morning. abc7 news. >> thank you. now, let's talk more broudly about crime on b.a.r.t. robberies and assaults are up. while felony arrests are down this year. according to the chronicle, in the first half of this year, there was a 35% increase in robberies and a 27% increase in assaults like the ones we just saw in that news conference. that does compare to the same time period last year. the chronicle also reports there's a 23% decrease in felony arrests. police arrested 132 people for felony crimes from january through june. compared to 171 during the same period last year. >> it's 6:03 now. happening today, the start of motions in the kate steinle murder trial. on friday, judge samuel fang chosen to preside over the trial. a judge could set a date for jury selection. juan francisco lopez sanchez is accused of killing steinle two years ago. the killing sparked a national debate over sanctuary cities and immigration. >> oakland police are investigating a shooting that left as many as six people hurt. it was first reported on e street between 105th and 106th avenues late yesterday afternoon. some were taken to area hospitals by civilians and others by ambulance. police do not believe any of the injuries are life threatening. a berkeley man is credited with saving his neighbor's life after running into a burning building and rescuing him. the fire started around 7:15 last night on addison street between sacramento and actin. a man heard a resident yelling for help. he ran in to help him. the victim taken to the hospital to be treated for burns. residents of three units have been displaced. it's unclear what caused the fire. >> vice president mike pence is denying a report he will run for president in 2020 if president trump does not seek re-election. "the new york times" reported that some republicans were forming a shadow campaign as though mr. trump were not involved. pence called the article disgraceful and offensive. he said his team is focusing their efforts to advance president trump's agenda. >> secretary of state rex tillerson met with sergey lavrov today in the philippines. tillerson said russia is showing willingness to talk about a resolution to the ukraine crisis. the trump administration will send its new special representative for ukraine negotiations to moscow for talks. tillerson also said today the u.s. is open to talks with north korea if it halts its testing of ballistic missiles. >> thousands of cars are being recalled by general motors. >> plus, the city of chicago is suing the department of justice. the beyond. 33 minutes, definitely in the red this morning. unfortunately, i think we're doing to continue to see that climb until that fully clears. also a new problem in the cordelia area. southbound 680 past the 80 interchange, five vehicles involved in a collision. four are off on the shoulder, but one is still blocking the far left lane. on top of that, just hearing about a new crash involving withhole public safety grants from sanctuary cities. jeff sessions said cities applying for grant will have to allow to two things, to allow federal immigration access to detention facilities and to welcoming city. >> the doj responding saying it's tragic chicago's mayor is less concerned with the murder rate than he is in protecting criminal aliens. >> jury selection is set to begin in denver in dueling lawsuits between pop star taylor swift and a former radio dj. dj david muller sued swift saying she falsely accused him of groping her in a backstage photo session in 2014. he was fired from his job shortly after that. swift countersued claiming sexual assault. she's expected to testify in the trial. >> a lot of people talking about this, hollywood stars chris pratt and anna faris are separating after eight years of marriage. the couple have a 4-year-old son. pratt and faris issued statements on their social media account. they said they tried hard for a long time. they're asking for privacy moving forward for the sake of their son. the statement says we still have love for each other. we'll also cherish our time with each other and continue to have the deepest respect for one president trump stopped to chat with him. this photo shows the couple smiling next to the president. they were attending a wedding when they bumped into him. he's spending his -day working vacation at the bedminster operty. he's another video of the president askin questions if they're having a good time. he has been known to stop in on weddings in the past, including one in june. >> gone fishing. russian president vladimir putin spent his days off to take a trip to siberia last week. video shows the leader snorkeling and fishing, hiking, kayaking, doing it shirtless, and even hunting for mushrooms. putin was accompanied by other russian officials. it comes days after president trump signed a bill imposing new sanctions against russia because of the alleged interfeence in the 2016 they're trouble getting some response out there on the scene. not sure if we're still waiting for an ambulance or a tow truck or what they need, but i don't think that's going to clear anytime soon. you can see the results, just total gridlock there on the inkrein. no issues getting to the maze. westbound 80 from 4, in the green. 36 minutes into san francisco, if you're heading southbound, san francisco to the airport, in the green at nine minutes. also quickly, want to head to the sunol grade. a crash involving a downed motorcycle. that's in the far left lanes. southbound 680 past state route 84, you're slow all the way back up to 580, so i would recommend avoiding that if you can. a little good news there, sounds like the rider is up and walking around. let's check in with mike nicco. you have a pretty quiet week ahead. >> the big story is just how cool it gets compared to average and how long the clouds are going to hang around and how fast the sea breeze is going to be. we deeper into the valley. that's why napa and santa rosa at 79, and then closer, san rafael at 76. same thing with novato. if you're going to the fair in santa rosa, 67 at 11:00. at 3:00, 79. warm sunshine. sunset, about 8:14. temperatures falling to the mid 60s and yeah, have the hoodie with you at 11:00. 57 degrees. down in the south bay, mild to warm, from 79 in san jose to morgueb hill at the ten-page letter says, quote, we need to stop assuming that gender gaps imply sexism. it goes on to say, women on average have more nuroticism. this may contribute to the higher levels of anxiety women report on google guide and to the lower number of women in high stress jobs. a professor says the underrepresentation of women in tech is likely do to opinions like that, but not due to biological factors. >> having an unwelcoming atmosphere where you're told that you're probably not someone who belongs there makes it hard to succeed. >> google's vp of diversity e-mails employees over the weekend, reiterating the kaempg's commitment to diversity. >> japanese telecommunications giant is interested in investigating in uber or lyft. they said they would be willing to invest in either of the two companies. soft bank is a big investor in ride companies in china, india, and latin america. it wants to break into theist in north america. it says it w like uber and lyft at the same time about a possible investment. >> los angeles police are following leads they hope will help them catch a person who brutally attacked a lyft driver. all of this caught on video. tunisia bennett had dropped off a customer and stopped to gas up when two women jumped ouft a car and started hurling insults and punches at her. they dragged her by the hair and threatened other customers who tried to intervene. they took her wallet, her phone, and her rent money. lapd traced the car's license plate and has a lead on the suspects. they issued a statement saying our thoughts are with tunisia as she recovered from this terrible or deal. >> a girls softball league from virginia has learned about social media and sportsmanship. they have been disqualified from the junior league world series after the 12 to 14-year-olds won their first game, one of the team members posted a picture on snapchat showing some of the girls giving the middle finger to the host team in washington state. the coach says the post came after several incidents of harassment by that other team. after the girls were disqualified, the team they targeted in washington ended up taking their spot. ouch. one of these things is not like the other. and there it is. a square watermelon. they're rare. in fact, so rare that they fetch a whopping $150 in japan where they were invented. the new square watermelons much has changed. we still have the far two left lanes blocked just before you get into the tunnel on westbound 80. yeah, just barely moving here, all across the incline. that stretches all the way back to the toll plaza and beyond at this point. zooming in on our traffic map, you can see the ripple effect back into the berkeley area and impacting 580 and 880. down to 7 miles per hour. we do have a crew on the scene, so we should have video shortly. hopefully an update too when we get more lanes open. eastbound 80 before you get to 37 in the vallejo area, hearing about a vehicle that went down an embankment, landed on its side. sounds like serious injuries involved in that crash. southbound 6 yath past the 80 interchange, earlier five-vehicle crash has cleared so that's starting to they're taking this very seriously. tiffany wilson live at the lake merritt station with the pictures you want to see before you leave the house this morning. tiffany. >> absolutely. those pictures are very clear. they show the suspect at the center of two unprovoked and violent attack and b.a.r.t. police say that in one of them, the suspect used metal bolt cutters to hit another passenger in the head. take a look at these images again. this was from thursday evening around 7:30. b.a.r.t. police say the man in these photos approached another passenger and struck him in the head with bolt cutters. witnesses say the suspect then punch and kicked the victim before running off the train and out of the san leandro station. the victim was transported to the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. then on saturday, around 7:30 at night, the same suspect punched a passenger in the face two times near the embarcadero station. both attacks were unprovoked and neither involved a robbery. >> don't confront him. he seems to be violent in nature. we don't know what type of mental state he's in. again, be aware of your surroundings and let us know if you see him. >> b.a.r.t. officials say that the newly installed cameras were a huge help in getting these images of the suspect. again, they want everyone who is commuting this morning and this evening to look out and if you see the suspect in those photos, call police. live in oakland, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >> thanks for that update. >> developing news now. a northwestern professor accused of a gruesome murder in chicago is due in court in the east bay. >> wintham lathem and another suspect turned themselves in on thursday night. matt keller is live frus in dublin. matt. >> reporter: natasha, the associate professor was under intensive observation while in jail over the weekend. he is scheduled to be in court here in dublin later this morning. these two men were fugitives for eight days before they turned themselves in to authorities in the bay area last week. 42-year-old wyndham lathem is an associate professor at northwestern university. the other suspect is andrew warren. he's a treasury assistant at one of oxford's residential colleges in england. warren is in jail in san francisco. they're accused in the stabbing death of 26-year-old cosmotologist trenton cosmo they found his body inside lathem's apartment about a week and a half ago. >> guys aren't caught and there's a murder seven floors beneath us, kind of weird. now that they're in custody, we'l sleep better at night. >> friends say prior to his death, they were dating and he wanted out of the relationship. warren had arrived in the u.s. just three days before the homicide. laem is expected to waive extradition and be sent back to illinois by the end of the week. reporting live in dublin, matt keller, abc7 news. >> thank you so much. it's 6:34 now. happening today, one of the two suspects accused in a child sex abuse case is expected to enter a plea in the south bay. 56-year-old michael kellar is scheduled to appear in court at 9:00 this morning. he was arrested a week ago at mineta san jose international airport after getting off a flight. investigators say he sent messages about sex abuse to the second suspect. what happened is a fellow passenger saw the disturbing messages and immediately told the flight crew. police say two young children have been identified as victims. a man is recovering in the hospital this morning after a two-alarm fire burned an apartment building in berkeley. >> this could have been so much worse if it weren't for the kz as of one brave neighbor. the fire started around 7:15 last night on addison street. at one point, all 27 units were evacuated. inside the burning building was a man lying on the floor yelling for help. a man who lives in the building next door saw the smoke and ran to help that man get him outside before rescuers got there. >> started yelling for him, get up, get out. finally, he kind of snapped out of it and came to. i said, don't worry about yourself. just get up and get out. his hands were all burned. but i just felt like i had to get in there and help someone, so i did. >> thank goodness. that victim was taken to the hospital and is being treated for burns. the red cross is helping residents of three units who were displaced by the fire. >> firefighters are expected to make a final sweep today add the grizzly fire in the east bay hills. 20 acres burned when the fire broke out on wednesday afternoon. half of the fire was on oakland land and the other half was on land owned by the lawrence berkeley national laboratories. investigators are looking into whether this was set intentionally. happening today, the driver who led chp on a chase from dublin to oakland last week will make his first court appearance. 30-year-old james sims of antioch tried his best to get away, even driving the wrong way and leading officers on a chase that lasted nearly two hours. you'll see the aerials only here on abc7. there were plenty of close calls with oncoming cars. a chp officer finally brought it to an end with a p.i.t. maneuver. sims was charged with car left, evading police, and driving with an expired license. >> governor brown is expressing reservations about the sanctuary state legislation. he wants more amendments to the bill. the bill would prevent state and local law enforcement from using resources to help federal agents enforce violations against undocumented immigrants. brown said he believes national immigration policy will eventually be decided in the courts. >> 6:37 now. california state university taking a big step to get more students to graduate within four years. starting with the new semester, incoming freshmen will no longer have to take english and math tests. nearly 40% of students have been required to take the courses for no credit. that often sidetracks students' degree work. >> it was not uncommon for students to have one full year that was just in those noncredit bearing courses. >> student assessments will now be made by standardized testing or high school gp arb. the hope is to boost four-year graduation rates from 19% to 25% by the year 2025. >> there's been a huge jump in toxic waste left behind by illegal growers in california. investigators have detected 45 more times solid fertilizers on forest land. some of it is so toxic, just touching the plants has actually sent law enforcement officers to the hospital. use of chemicals in national forests is against federal law because it can cause algae blooms and bacteria problems in our rivers and streams. clean-up of just one site can cost as much as $100,000. and that's in taxpayer money. there's a backlog of more than 600 pot farms needing to be cleaned up. >> nothing has changed. we had this crash for over 30 minutes now, westbound 80, just before you get into the tunnel here from the bay bridge commute. you can still see the flashing lights. we have a multi-vehicle crash, sounds like a motorcycle is involved. that is still blocking the two left lanes. still just barely moving through the incline area and really back to the bay bridge toll plaza and beyond. a quick check of drive times. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, 38 minutes. 48 minutes once you make it through the toll booths, and san francisco to sfo, you're in the green still at nine minutes. in the meantime, another sig alert, this one on the sunol grade. southbound 680, told you about the crash also involving a motorcycle. that's blocking the two left lanes. it doesn't sound like we have life threatening injuries, but an ambulance is on the scene. 30 miles per hour, 8 miles per hour. today, really the busiest day we in theouth bay. for most of us, 63 in san jose. 52 in the hills of los gatos. we have about 60 in san pablo. lafayette, livermore, san francisco, checking in at 57, napa. quick look at the south bay. truck and then opening fire at the owner. the victim tells abc7 news he was visiting a frnd in hayward saturday night when he heard the engine of his dodge ram truck start up. he ran outside and he found someone was stealing that truck. so he borrowed his friend's car to follow the suspect and caught up to him. that's when the suspect pulled out a gun. >> i pulled up right to the back and said hey, that's my truck. he said so-and-so you and pulled out a gun and shot. so then he took off and i didn't bother to follow after that. >> hayward police chased that suspect through city streets where he crashed into several cars. at one point, police say he even drove toward officers. one officer opened fire but missed the suspect who then crashed the stolen truck and then got arrested. san francisco has put in a bid to buy a mcdonald's it's identified as a mginate for trouble. the restaurant in the news on thursday when a man was shot and hurt inside. city officials want to replace the fast food gia with affordable housinginstead. a mcdonald's spokesperson said the proposal is currently under review. >> ucla is alerting thousands of students about a possible security breach. a hacker gained access to a server containing personal data with more than 30,000 current and former students. it is offering people affected free identity protection services for a year. >> quarter to 7:00 now. a woman is pleading to get her stolen computer equipment back that contains priceless videos of her father. a surveillance image shows a man rummaging through liz kane's parked car in san francisco. this happened on june 6th on oliver street near van ness. the man leaves in a hurry with several bags. kane was in the process of moving so she forgot her six laptops and five external hard drives were in the car. video of her dad who is battling stage-4 cancer is on the computers. now, the videos are everything to r. she says whoever has her items now, she just wants them back. no
