tomorrow. >> earlier union leaders said they were not happy about governor jerry brown's move to head off a strike on monday. >> we are hoping that that announcement would not throw additional cold water on what has been a very, very, very slow-moving day. >> to keep bart trains running, governor jerry brown's office filed papers in san francisco superior court calling for a court order, even if talks are not settled this weekend. this is something bart management asked for to guarantee uninterrupted service come monday morning. >> there will be train service and it will enable all the area regional transit agencies to know they don't have to have a strike contingency plan if place monday. >> bart commuters we talked to they welcome a court order for a 60-day cooling-off period. >> i think it's good bart is not going on strike because that bart strike really hurts the commute for a long time. >> everyone wants them to negotiate. but i think, you know, if bart strikes, then a lot of people in the bay area can't get to work at all. >> but union leaders say their fear is that bart management will just delay the process. >> the community wants a resolution to this conflict. it does not want it pushed down to october. >> they say the best way to keep trains running is to make a deal now. as negotiations resume here, the hearing for a court-ordered 60-day cooling-off period fullsom in the city's mission district. one victim sustained life-threatening injuries. the other two were not seriously wounded. they got a call about a group of people fighting outside of a liquor store. officers arrested one suspect. people say the stabbing is not gang related. >> in developing news, the major development in the search of a missing oakland mother. investigators discovered a body in the same area they were searching for sandra coke. we have the latest. >> search crews discovered a female body in unincorporated vacaville in their search for the missing 50-year-old sandra coke of oakland. the coroner was yet to i.d. the body but it was sound within the search grid in a rural area west of i80 west of lagoon valley park. she was last seen with a paroled sex offender. he was arrested tuesday on a parole violation. people are calling him a person of interest. coke's friends said she briefly dated him more than 20 years ago. on the street where she lives with her 15-year-old daughter, signs like these are posted alongside the road. jerry pitman has lived next door to her and has known her for ten years. he's hoping for the best. >> i was hoping she would be okay when they did find her. >> this woman lives a few house down. >> she comes down and we work on our bikes, say hi, do the neighbors thing. >> their time together left a lasting impression. >> it's unfortunate. she was such a wonderful woman, so pleasant. a really wonderful -- a wonderful person to be around. >> even though the body found hasn't been identified, for now police tell us the search for sandra coke has wrapped up. abc7 news. >> eleven ground search teams and a rescue helicopter looking for a woman. the 59-year-old woman was supposed to be hiking in sequoia national park sunday and then return to her home monday. park officials believe she was hike ag long the saw tooth trail in the mineral springs area. her family said she is an experienced hike who are often goes hiking alone. >> in developing news out of san diego, authorities have now confirmed the body that was discovered in a burned-out home is eight-year-old ethan anderson, brother of a missing teenager. authorities are searching an idaho wilderness for james denudge yeah, the man accused of killing ethan and his mother and then abducting 16-year-old hannah anderson. we have the latest. >> police have cast their dragnet deep into the idaho wilderness. >> they are obviously camping in that area. >> the 16-year-old was spotted along with her alleged abductor. a man on horseback came upon the two on foot in a rugged area. >> they were spotted twice when they were coming into the area and had when they left they had backpacks on. >> dimaggio is a skilled woods man. he's accused of killing hannah anderson's mother and her eight-year-old brother, ethan. then burning down his san diego area home and kidnapping hannah. >> we should be optimistic she appeared to be in good health and was found wednesday. >> authorize found his blue nissan versa concealed in brush. he's now at large in a 2.3 million-acre preserve about 70 miles from boise and he's on familiar territory. he may be prepared to hold out there. >> we know he recently did buy some camping equipment, tents and backpacks. >> police know they are going to be roughing it. >> on foot or on horseback. you are not going to be driving vehicles into that area. >> authorities think the 40-year-old dimaggio may have had a crush on the teenager. >> if she's still alive, at least two days ago apparently she was, he may want to protect her. >> the case gave rise to an amber alert and a massive manhunt. a most dramatic plea came from hannah's father. >> let my daughter go. you have taken everything else. >> abc news. >> in san diego, friends and family held a candlelight vigil for the teen. people said they were relieved to hear of her possible sighting, but remain concerned for her safety. four firefighters are recovering this morning after they were hurt battling a fire on treasure island. sky 7hd was over the scene as flames and smoke worked their way to the roof of the empty building yesterday. it was on avenue e near 9th street. it broke out on the stairs of the building. it took crews an hour and a half to bring it under control. one of the firefighters was hurt in a fall. it's not clear how the other three were injured. none of the injuries are serious, though. >> developing news this morning in the wildfire burning in riverside county. some east evacuation orders have opinion lifted, but hundreds of residents still aren't being allowed back into their homes. the fire has burned more than 18,000 acres and has destroyed 26 homes since it began wednesday. it's now 40% contained. governor jerry brown declared a state of emergency for the area. that frees up additional funds and resources for the fire fight and recovery. developing news, as many as six people are dead after a small plane crashed into two homes in connecticut. the prop plane went down near an airport in new haven as it tried to land yesterday afternoon. the bodies have not been recovered because of fire damage and because the homes are unstable. one of the homes was empty, but authorities believe two small children in the other home were killed. according to the new york times, a former microsoft executive was piloting the plane, taking his 17-year-old son to visit college campuses. all right. it is just shy of 6:10 right now. lisa argen joins us a preview of the accuweather forecast. >> we are cloudy everywhere, from temperatures are cool in the 50s with mist and drizzle as you head across the bay, but emeryville should hit the upper 60s today. something to look forward to. meteorologist lisa argen has your forecast in just a few minutes. >> this afternoon, italy's luna rossa will try to beat artemis to take the lead in the finals. yesterday they beat them to take the 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. today's race starts at 1:15 on san francisco bray. the winner of the semifinals will advance to face new deal land in the finals. the kiwi easily defeated them in the round-robin series and they elected to move straight through to the challengers final. the louis vuitton winner faces the america's cup winner. >> we now know why police opened fire and killed a man in sunnyvale. the police tell abc7 news the man was armed with a nine-inch blade and charged officers thursday on san pedro avenue. police went to the home after the man called 911 and said he had just killed someone a woman's body, believed to be his estranged wife, was found in the home. both of their identities have not been released. governor jerry brown is going to the u.s. supreme court over prison overcrowding. he has officially asked the justices to overturn a lower court ruling that orders california to cut its prison population by 10,000. brown contends violent felons will have to be set free if the order is followed. >> in the first stundy of it's kind, scientists have pinpointed differences in the developing brain that may increase the risk of cognitive disabilities like attention deficit hyperactivity disorders. doctors are now hoping to develop tests that could offer a much earlier diagnosis. abc7 news anchor carolyn johnson reports. born four months early, it's hard to know what kind of health or behavioral issues this preemie could face. >> they are at a risk of a whole host of problems. >> at children's hospital, los angeles, researchers looked deep into the brains of premature babies to find out what differences could be seen at birth. of particular interest, the frontal lobe. this area helps them problem solve, remain attentive. >> it was changed and it's actually the same region that's also the same region changed in children with adhd. >> the risk for adhd in the general population is 6 or 7%. in preemies it can be more. , as high as 30%. >> adhd is four to six times more common with the low birth weight group. using mri technology, scientists found brain regions in preemies would likely be smooth and round. >> if we can show it is predictive of developmental problems, it could allow us to intervene early. >> many aren't diagnosed until school age. early intervention may teach these children how to maintain focus and suppress impulsive behaviors. but doing it on all infants is expensive. but researchers still believe it can save money in the long run. >> we can treat them early on and hopefully avoid adhd all together. >> this is a significant problem with significant costs. we can say these kids are at risk, intervene with preventative therapies, and prevent them from needing medication later, can save lots and lots of money. >> that was carolyn johnson reporting. the next step is to find out how well the brain anomalies predict adhd. until then only diagnosis through behavioral observation is still the best option. >> as we all know, kids might not always be excited to go back to school, but they all seem to love back to school shopping. today 45 more bay area kids will get to take part in a special shopping event at target stores in walnut creek, pleasant hill and novato. it's set up by the salvation army for low-income families. each student gets $81 to spend on anything from notebooks to school clothes. nationwide, target and the salvation army are providing back-to-school shopping sprees for 12,000 kids. and more than 1,000 low income children from several san francisco neighborhoods will get new backpacks today. they also will have a chance to have fun at the salvation army's back to school carnival. organizers aim to get kids equipped for school and having them earn supplies but games and other activities. the salvation army said it also helps parents meet the costly burden of back to school preparation. this is the 15th year of the carnival. the event is only for parents who have preregistered. today protesters are planning a march and rally in their continuing effort to save a downtown berkeley post office. a group of about 20 demonstrators have been camped out in front of the building on austin way since july 24th. they are protesting the postal services decision to put the historic building up for sale. they say they are also against the post office's privatization. earlier this week organizers asked protesters to move off the steps of the building and on to the sidewalk because they are trespassing on federal property. authorities warned them they must vacate or face arrest. >> parents and fans are elate the on the peninsula this morning as the little league all-stars move one step closer to the world series. a viewing party was held at a high school yesterday. the belmont redwood shores all-stars took on their counterparts from arizona in san bernardino. the belmont team was undefeated going into yesterday's game and they were able to pull out an 8-1 win. larry beil will be along later in sports with the highlights. the outside lands music and arts festival continues today in san francisco. thousands of people rocked out at least night's opening of the festival. chilly weather didn't stop people from streaming into golden gate bark to see the headliner, paul mccartney. twenty-seven musical acts also took to the stages. tonight's headliner is nine inch nails. but don't go seconding to be able to buy a ticket at the gates. three day festival is sold out. >> it's 6:19. if you are headed out today, there's always so much to do in the bay area. it will be cool but sunny later? >> that's right. in fact, temperatures still below normal. we've been in this pattern that has allowed for the mist and drizzle and slow clearing. that today downtown in the mid-60s. the east side of the city. 55 in fairfield with the southwest wind. up to about 29 miles an hour. so a little breezy there. santa rosa 56. we are looking at airport delays about an an hour and ten minute. view from mt. tam, you can see very pretty shot for you with temperatures this morning. typically cool and this afternoon really the warmup is coming, but for those of you in the east bay, may feel a little warmer, but eventually the low clouds and fog will burn back sooner in the days ahead. mist and drizzle, mostly sunny. mild today. the warming trend through much of the up coming work week but my next weekend another low on the way. this area of low pressure has been with us for about the last week. it has provided the cloud cover, the hazy conditions, and that generous onshore flow, bringing temperatures down from where they should be. in fact as much as five to eight degrees cooler. low eventually moves up the coast, out of the picture in the days ahead. today maybe a couple degrees warmer into the mid-80s inland and hopefully some sunshine. just a little bit today, golden gate park. here's a look at san jose, the week ahead. today looking for a high in the mid-70s. upper 70s tomorrow. still shy of the average of the low 80s. but that comes into the play by the middle of the week and then a slow slide down into next weekend. here's a look at livermore. it's been cool, below average. average highs upper 80s. we will get there." in fact we are look at 9:30s by thursday and friday. by next weekend a looks a little cooler. hi temperatures today from milpitas, 64. 76 red radioed city. very little change in most parts of the bay. we will try to get some sunshine downtown today. mid-60s and in the north bay look for 75 in novato with 76 in napa w he will call it partly to mostly sunny. east bay numbers today about 70 oakland. >> 27 in union city, and normally we should see highs a little bit warmer, but today we are going with 80 in pleasanton, 8 a brentwood. the look ahead, temperatures still cool. upper 80s tomorrow inland and mid-70s around the bay. monday and tuesday we will get to near 90 inland and upper 70s around the bay, and 60s coast. even sunshine at the shoreline that. takes us right to the middle of the week, and then maybe by next weekend we will cool off. but between now and then at least we are getting just a little bit warmer. >> and i always feel lake i go to different areas for stories, i can hit three different sorts of temperatures in any given day. >> certainly. >> sometimes it's san francisco police have launched a new twitter account for people when is bikes has been stolen. this photo came from a concerned cyclist and spot add man with a cordless grinder. sfpd recovered more than 850 stolen bikes last year, but only managed to return 150 to their rightful owners, leading the department to create this twitter account. >> the santa cruz sheriff's office arrested this man on child molestation charges and they say they believe he may have heard several children. he's accused of molesting a 14-year-old boy and a second victim. he has been a foster parent for 16 years. he's volunteered at local elementary schools and has been involved with youth activities in the community. some high school students in milbrae had to retake their advance placement exams all because of a mistake made by school officials. 224 students from mills high took the exams in may. the results up invalidated because many of the students weren't sitting the mandatory five feet away from each other. students we spoke to thought the retake was harsh. >> i walked in thinking i wouldn't do as well as the first time mostly because it's been three or four months since we took the first a.p. test. and it's been summer, i haven't been doing anything. >> i wish we could go back to time and just have our original scores so i can do my summer homework and not have to obsess about this anymore. >> school officials have admitted their mistake. they have even filed a lawsuit to have the original test score counts. the man accused of killing a 19-year-old nursing student in san jose is being held without bail this morning. >> kimberly chico died in the early morning hours last saturday. she was a passenger in a car when she was shot in downtown san jose. the suspect, a 23-year-old man, had his first appearance in court yesterday. he's being charged with one count of murder with a gun enhancement. it appears he had no ties to the victim and investigators have not said who they believe he was trying to shoot or why. >> coming up, yahoo is getting a makeover. the possible new look of one of the internet's longest-running icons. plus the warning sirens that are really. it's kira who has all the star power. good morning, we are starting out with plenty of low clouds around. mist and drizzle in san francisco with temperatures mainly in the mid-and upper 50s right now. we have 60 in oakland. and some airport delays, but we are looking at a mild afternoon and some sunshine on the way for most today. numbers ranging from the low 60s at our beaches to the mid-80s inland. we will call it mild, continuing below average. but by the evening hours a patchy low clouds return. we are looking at a modest warmup. i'll explain what that means and show you the seven-day outlook. not seeing it. but that's a little later. >> thank you, lisa. it's 6:31 right now. new this morning president obama is calling on congress to turn the page on what he calls the bubble-and-bust mentality that led to the housing market's collapse. in his weekly address, mr. obama announced steps he plans to take to strengthen the housing market. the president said it's time to build on progress being made by creating a better bargain for responsible middle class homeowners. >> congress should give every american the chance to refinance at today's low rates. we should help more qualified families get a mortgage and buy their first home. we should get construction workers back on the job, rebuilding communities hit hardest by the crisis. and we should make sure that folks who don't want to buy a home have a decent, affordable place to rent. president obama is proposing to phase out mortgage giants fannie mae and freddy mac so private capital can play a bigger role in mortgages. he said the country must preserve access to 30 year fixed-rate mortgages. >> if you are headed outdoors this weekend, san jose will hold their annual summer jazz fest. this year they have brought the stage venues closer together to make it more walkable. it won't just be jazz. tunes ranging from big bands to salsa will be featured. 122 acts and about a thousand musicians will entertain this weekend. three people from sunnyvale have come forward to claim their piece of the power ball the trio of co-workers pooled their money and bought 30 tickets at lakewood shell. they came up just one number short of the $448 million jackpot. still the three will split more than $289,000. they plan to use the money to pay off mortgages and take vacations. it's august, and that means meteor showers. the annual percent i don't -- tl persion shower will light up the sky this weekend. astronomers say there will be lots of shooting stars to see, about 70 meteors an hour. the best viewing is from midnight to dawn. experts say if you can see the seven stars of the big dipper, that means there's enough darkness to watch the meteor shower. new york city, as many of us know, is filled with small apartments that go for big bucks. so one california designer decided to take small to a whole new level. gregory bought a dumpster to stay in while visiting the big apple. but nobody wants to stay in any ordinary trash can, so he installed a kitchen, a bathroom, a bed, even a sun deck. he also added a tank for drinking water and a small stove, and to top it off he has a mini bar to entertain any guests. the dumpster is parked in the red hook area of brooklyn, but in case he wants to move, it has wheels. one of the longest-running images on the internet, the iconic yahoo logo, is getting a makeover. the company says times are changing and so will their look. johnathan bloom looks at the options for yahoo's new design. >> which one will it be? yahoo posted this video, announcing they will take on a new logo every day for the next month before revealing their permanent new look in september. it's the latest move by new ceo marissa mayer who took over a year ago and began making changes. she was acquiring start-up, hiring new talent and forcing employees to come to the office instead of working from home. >> she's the most effective ceo that company has had in probably ten years. >> he recalls when yahoo looked like this. in 1994 no one heard of a search engine. abc7 news reporter david louie described it this way. >> it's kind of a 411 directory by having a logo, no matter how fresh it looks. >> in san francisco, abc7 news. ♪ yahoo >> abc7 news. most of san mateo company's tsunami warning sirens apparently don't work. earlier this week county workers discovered five out of eight sirens are broken. they are supposed to provide tsunami warnings along miles of coastline. from pacifica on up. they say repair work will start monday and should finish by early september, but until then extra police and sheriff's deputies will work to alert the public in the event of a disaster. text alerts, e-mails and telephone warnings also would be used in the event of an emergency. >> it's a partial victory for apple in the global legal battle over smartphones. the u.s. international trade commission has sided with the company in its decision to block imports of this samsung devices. they said the samsung phones infringe on two of apple's patents, but cleared the company on four other patrollen dispute. the phones cited in yesterday's ruling are 2010 models that are no longer widely sold. but the ruling could affect what features are included in future devices. coming up, a cheating scandal all being blamed on social media. we will tell illegally posted hundreds of test-related photos while taking star exams last spring. the standardized testing and reporting exam determines academic progress and is typically a factor for many parents when choosing schools for their kids. the schools online results come with a warning now about how the numbers may not be accurate. >> it's a shock because our school is such a good school. you would never think like the few kids would ever do something like that but they did and i guess we have to suffer the consequences now. >> actual test questions were posted at 16 schools. those include aamador valley high school in pleasant done, low he will high school and one in pittsburgh. the final punishment is weeks away. an object considered to be one of the most important and iconic this afternoon. we are looking at actually all day long low clouds and fog and gray sky from north to south along the central coast, as well. this morning in emeryville look for mostly cloudy conditions, but we are looking for a high of 70 in oakland. right now it's 61. a little warmer than last hour. 60 mountain view, 69 san jose. shy of the average once again today. 57 in half moon bay. and san francisco over hour delays at sfo. the roof camera gray conditions all wait from santa rosa through napa. visibility is fine. a southwest wind up to 23 americans in fairfield today, keeping it just in the mid-80s today. that will be the high range. livermore 61 with a gray start. here's a look at mt. tam. above 2,000 feet at about 2600 feet we have some sunshine. the sun was up at 6 k 21. setting at 8:08. look for mostly sunny and mild today with warming temperatures by the middle of next week. we will be just about back to normal. it's going to take at least three to five days to get there, and today maybe just about two degrees of warming. but this has been the culprit all week long. an area of low pressure that has just been relatively close to the bay area. right now it's raining in crescent city, and still the risk of a thunderstorm along the northwest coast. but for the bay area low clouds and fog to start. then they will pull back and we will call it mostly sunny for most and a little warmer here in our inland east bay. you can see the clouds pulling back around ocean beach and golden gate park, but still hanging tough from point reyes to stinson today. so not everyone will see some sunshine, but in the days ahead it certainly will get brighter out there. it's been cool in the north earn sierra, but a nice day in of. mid-60s and some afternoon in monterey. 75 in los angeles and back home temperatures will be in the 60s half moon bay with plenty of clouds here. 66 downtown. partial afternoon sun. 70 oakland, 76 today in napa. pretty cool up in wine country. 84 antioch, 82 in morgan hill. some events around the bay, outside plenty of clouds by noontime with temperatures around 60. but by 3:00, even though we won't get much in the way of warming, at least it will be brighter right through the early evening. temperatures will be dropping but we will see partly cloudy skies. the giants are playing today with temperatures starting out in the low 670s, 1:00. mid-60s by 4:00 with a mix turf clouds and sun. a slow climb with upper 80s inland tomorrow. monday 90s inland. and wednesday looks to be the warmest day of the week. not much change through friday. so if you thought it's been a little cool, you are right. we will try to warm it up slowly. >> great. it will help the midweek slump, some warm weather. >> yes. >> thank you, lisa. in 7-under 63. that is for eagle. dufner is 9-under, leading by two strokes, heading to the third round. tiger 1-over, 10 back. nfl. the raiders open the preseason against the cowboys. matt flynn started as quarterback and led them to a field goal. tirrell prior, intriguing. the silver and black on a long drive only to get a pick in the end zone. third quarter. third string matt mccoy hooks up with area this weekend. and meteorologist lisa argen has your forecast. >> it's certainly cloudy this morning with mist and drizzle but look for temperatures to warm into the mid-80s. oakland will be sunny at 70 and cool again for this time of year in san jose. but sunny skies and 76, mid-70s in santa rosa. a slow warming trend gets underway today with a couple degrees of warming each and every day. into the 90s by wednesday. 80s around the bay. that means a quicker burn-off and even a little sun at the beaches by midweek. so that's more like normal, those midweek 90s. >> that will be really
