frazier smith is set to move out of the hospital and into a house in a high end neighborhood. laura anthony is live where a community meeting is going to be held on this tonight. >> unlike what we saw in walnut creek a couple weeks ago, the residents are getting a heads up that a high risk sex offender may be moving into their neighborhood. there's a pleating here at the local fire station, and many of this man's potential neighbors plan to speak up loudly. >> how do i get one of those? i don't have a pool. >> doug lives a few doors down from this house. it's a four bedroom, three and a half bath 2800 square feet with a pool in the back. the rent is $3200 per month. barring a last minute court decision, this vacant house could be the new home of a high risk sexually violent predator, frazier smith. >> initially i was stunned and in disbelief that that would even be a possibility. at this point i'm -- i mean we're all very angry about it. >> the 51-year-old smith is soon to be released from the state hospital. he has four convictions for sexually assaulting teenaged girls. the last offense was in 2006. >> i don't want him here. >> martha lives right next door. she heard about her potential new neighbor when sheriff's went door to door with these flyers. >> it's a big house with a swimming pool, and it's a luxury home, and our government is going to pay to have this person live there. whether we want him or not. >> most upsetting to many here, especially parents is how many kids there are living close to smith's proposed home. the community college is also a short distance away. >> we have a pathway that goes directly behind the college there. not okay with it. >> this move to the neighborhood season the a done deal. on march 24th there will be a public hearing on the matter, in solano county superior court. laura anthony, abc 7 news. residents woke up to quite a surprise today after an hour's long police chase. it all started this morning in san jose. the men led police on a chase before getting off on freemont avenue in sunnyvale. this one went through three different cities. >> it's scary, it's, you know it's -- there's usually not a lot going on here it's definitely a little unsettling. i heard a loud noise in the middle of the night, the dogs started barking. >> two police dogs were sent in and nearly seven hours after that chase started police arrested the two men. they were taken away with dog bites. the pair faces several charges including esidee inging evading an officer and carjacking. no ambulance was available to certained to yesterday's mission district fire for more than six minutes after the first 911 call came in. the department officials blame an unusually high call volume. there were nearly three times as many medical calls at the time of the blaze than on a normal wednesday morning apparently. firefighters trained as paramedics, provided cpr. you're going to notice some changes in san francisco's richmond district. >> that's the sound of safety. crews repainted the crosswalk at emerson street and eerie boulevard. it's part of the vision zero campaign, to eliminate all traffic deaths by the year 2024. this comes one day after a van hit an 87-year-old man crossing the street killing him. wednesday morning's incident at gary and 26th avenue is the first pedestrians death of the year in the city. and a very sobering reminder for everyone. >> you don't want to call these things accidents any more. they are preventable. we have a city that's committed. >> a $500 million transportation bond is paying for all the improvements. the judge in a $16 million sexual discrimination case says bringing the plaintiff's finances into court, would create a side show. ellen powell is suing a venture capital firm accusing it of gender discrimination. the firm fired her in 2012. her finances will not be admitted into court even though the defense argues that is her real motivation for the lawsuit. another bombshell today she received $33,000 a month in severance pay for six months after she left. the defense questioned powell, the juror's questions for her will be read in the morning. too many feral cats around liberty high school and the adult education center. the district is doing what it can to get them out. animal advocates don't like the way the problem is being handled. leann ma len dez joins us with more. >> this has been a problem for years. now, depending on who you ask, they'll tell you the number of cats is between 35 50 60 maybe more. and the issue is creating a lot of con electroversety. >> probably between both campuses 50 to 60 cats. >> julie is a feral cat advocate. she's been keeping an eye on the cats which for years have made their homes under the buildings at liberty high school and the adult continuing education center. we didn't see a single cat today, but she has taken pictures of them before. she says the liberty union high school district was late at addressing the feral cat problem. >> this was opened. the cat could go in and they closed it off. the cats were entombed, several died. the district has documented only one accidental death. they have installed several screens to prevent the cats from getting in and have made sure they have a way to get out. >> we put one way doors that we ourselves have made. >> the one way doors are made of wood. animal advocates are asking the district to install these instead. >> the cats can go out but they can't go back in it's clear plaftic, they go toward the light and go out of it. >> the problem is compounded by people feeding the cats. it has gotten so bad that the adult continuing education center has had a bad flea problem. >> we flea bombed the classrooms and vacuumed and had to wipe off all the desks and so on. and this morning it was better, but there were still fleas. >> the cats are everywhere. >> it's uncomfortable. having cat problems. >> most of these cats have been trapped, spade or neutered and released back into their colony. so they won't be reproducing, which is a good thing for the district and for advocates. in brentwood, leann melendez abc 7 news. it's a little scary because i have kids. >> they are playing very close to where this bat was found in free monday the. what authorities are now telling residents next. incredible nasa footage the damage happening tested positive for rabbies. chris winn is live with the story tonight. >> reporter: the bat was found right near the entrance to the community center. it's right next to the local library as well as a popular park. if you take a look behind me, you can see some families outside right now, this is a busy location with hundreds of people going in and out every day. that's why health officials went door to door alerting neighbors about the discovery. >> it is scary when you see that, and -- because that's scared. >> she lives not far from the urban teen community center in freemont. >> i don't think many people knew about it actually. >> a dead bat was found near the center's entrance. the bat much like the one you see here was turned over to vector control who confirmed on tuesday it tested positive for rabbies. >> if your dog picked it up your child picked it up they need to contact their physician. >> vector control representatives canvassed nearby neighborhoods this morning stopping by nearly 60 homes to educate residents about the disease, saying it's not uncommon to find bats at the center and the park next door. >> attracts the insects. the bats know about this, they are flying around with the lights at night. >> it's the unhealthy bats that are the main concern. >> two to six rabid bats are found each year in alameda county. >> humans exposed to rabbies who don't get preventative vaccine shots will develop symptoms in one to three months. and could die within one to two weeks of becoming sick. she stopped by the center this afternoon to get her daughter from preschool. >> they go to the program. they would come here and play. i think that they have to be responsible to tell us. >> signs are posted at the entrance to the center as families walk in. a warning for neighborhoods to be on the lookout. >> i can keep a watch on what's happening around if i'm letting kids go out. i believe i can alert them. that will help me. >> for now, it's business as usual where this community meets. in freemont, chris winn, abc 7 news. the fire department received a special gift this morning, that will help its firefighters safely rescue people stranded at sea. a foundation donated 40 top of the line wet suits this morning. he passed away a week before he was set to become a firefighter. he died from a heart attack. his family has generously carried on his commitment to service and his desire to give back. >> as you can see, they're bright red it will make it easier for our incident commanders to keep eyes on our swimmers. again, the ocean can become very unpredictable. >> last year there were 170 rescue calls at ocean beach alone. there are nearly 300 san francisco firefighters who are certified to conduct those water rescues. a san francisco blogger was honored just about an hour ago for helping victims of a mission district fire. 27-year-old zachary crockett helped raise $165,000 for the 54 people who lost their homes in the january 28th fire. crockett who lives in the neighborhood said he couldn't stand by and do nothing. >> i couldn't stop thinking about the families inside. i -- when i was there, i saw a few of them huddled on the corner. consoling each other i knew they had been involved in a fire. and that image is stuck in my head. >> in all, 2300 people and businesses donated to zachary's fund-raiser. the san francisco based company received that money from japan's e commerce giant ragutan. the company is now worth $2.5 billion. not so good news for intel. the santa clara company cut it's revenue out. intel blames it on weak demand for p.c. new word about hillary clinton's hiring spree as she raises new money in the bay area. she was a speaker at ebay's women's summit yesterday. the new york times says clinton was paid for the appearance. probably between 2 and $300,000. usa today reports her speech focused on improving gender equality. the times also says newly hired staffers will report for duty at the end of this month. take a look this week's cover image for a time magazine article is raising eyebrows because it appears to give her a pair of horns. do you see that? any resemblance is entirely coincidental. the issue has come up dozens of times for other magazine covers. dianne feinstein is calling for an investigation into accusations, dogs are becoming sick and dying from eating a popular dog food. >> michael finney has been looking into this and he's here with the story. >> it shows us how important our dogs are. senator feinstein is calling on the fda to launch an investigation into purina's beneful kibble. the request comes a week after a lawsuit filed by a bay area man claimed thousands of dogs were becoming ill and dying after eating the products. the senators also called for an immediate update of fda guidelines that would prevent contamination of dog food. the lawsuit alleges a toxic substance known to be lethal to animals. it can cause internal bleeding and other serious health issues. purina calls the lawsuit without merit. general motors is dramatically reduceing the warranty coverage on its chevrolet and gmc cars. gm will cut its free maintenance program by half. the company will now cover two service visits in 24 months instead of four. they also reduced their car warranties to cover five years or 60,000 miles. that's down from five years or 100,000 miles. the warranties have not been a big selling point, so why bother. customer care -- customers care more about the quality of the car than the warranty. makers of a trendy style of children's pj's are pulling them off store shelves. these pajamas made by m&ms world are not flame resistant. the pants feature m&m candies and characters that could pose a risk of burns, no one has reported any thanks mike. >> michael, thank you. a monster solar flair the largest of the year erupted today. it's amazing the flair is rated an x class the strongest category of sun storms aimed directly at earth. nasa's solar dynamics caught this video of the flair just as it erupted. the flair also caused a few problems, including an hour long radio blackout in some areas. plenty of solar activity out view from our east bay health camera mild to warm again tomorrow record highs possible on saturday it's going to turn cooler on sunday. and monday. high pressure is taking control now. and that means the warming trend that has already gotten underway will take us in through the weekend. as we head toward the overnight hours, the high clouds thin out a bit, tomorrow morning we'll see patches of fog, and then the clouds will increase again as we head toward your friday afternoon. increasing high cloud cover along with those temperatures as we bump them up a few more degrees from today. take a look at the temperature trend for livermore. average high is 64 degrees. the entire 7-day period you're going to hover well above average. saturday, getting up to 83 degrees. that's when the numbers will peak, and they slip a little bit as we head toward next week. tomorrow morning, mid-40s to low 50s. watch out for those patches of fog. could be a little bit on the thick side. if you do take the ferry across the bay, the high clouds will make for a beautiful sunrise, so check it out. high clouds will thicken in the afternoon hours for your south bay. 79 in gilroy, 76 san jose 74 in santa cruz, a pretty warm day, on the peninsula. 67 half moon bay. well above average for this time of year. in the north bay, 60s coast side, 70s for the rest of you napa, santa rosa 75 degrees, 73 in san
