through 4:00 torch morning so we should be okay once we get through the evening commute. the crash i just told you about in san francisco cleared in the last couple moments so we're back to a quiet start. no significant issues, walnut creek, southbound 680, still wide open. the central valley, this is our only spot for slowdowns this early. 22 miles an hour, 16 miles an hour on 205 to 580. nothing unusual there. just typical delays. we have one new minor issue in the napa area. we'll check on that next. >> alexis, thank you. press briefing at the white house after reports president trump shares classified information with russia. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are calling on the president to explain himself. the white house insists he did nothing wrong and this morning the president is explaining himself -- a little. the president taking to twitter to defend his conversation with russia's foreign minister and also dorp. he tweeted a short time ago "as president i wanted to share with russia at an openly scheduled white house meeting which i have the absolute right to do facts pertaining to terrorism and airline flight safety. humanitarian reasons plus i want russia to greatly step up their fight against isis and terrorism." so this morning the president denying reports he shared any inappropriate information. reggie, back to you. >> jess, for more on this, the information the president relayed in last week's oval office meeting came from a u.s. ally through an intelligence-sharing agreement and this morning democrats and republicans are expressing concern he may have given enough information away to jeopardize our source's identity and relationship with allies. abc news legal expert dan abrams weighs in on the legality of the conversation. this happened moments ago on "good morning america." >> the president has the ability as a legal matter to declassify anything at any time. the way the classification system is set up is for the president and so the president can then make that decision. >> the president's national security adviser says the president didn't disclose any military operations that weren't already publicly known. as abc 7 news reporter katie utehs reports, that's still not appeasing bay area lawmakers. >> congress cannot be powerless. >> reporter: bay area congressional leaders are fired up following reports that the president shared classified intelligence info with russian ambassadors last week. >> we cannot have the president of the united states being casually loose lipped. >> reporter: congressman jared huffman says the closed door nature of the meeting is problematic. >> the fact that he would have this meeting closed to the united states press corps, the world press corps, open apparently to state press for russia and that he would divulge sensitive classified information, it's yet another brick in the wall. >> reporter: swallow says congress must learn what was said. >> i want the administration to come to congress and tell us what was said. >> reporter: the president does have the power to declassify information. >> maybe he can retroactively declassify information to clean up these messes he keeps getting into but at some point it becomes so damaging to this country that congress has to step up. >> reporter: swalwell has introduced legislation calling for an independent to investigate russia's involvement in the 2017 election. he wants a special prosecutor and to freeze any change of policy towards russia while the investigation is open but he needs the support of his republican colleagues -- some 21 of them. in the east by a, katie utehs, abc 7 news. a movement is growing to support a san rafael father detained by ois. >> friends, family and a congressman want the government to release the undocumented immigrant who they say has been a valuable part of the community. amy hollyfield is live in san francisco's financial district. amy? >> reporter: good morning, reggie, officials at i.c.e. don't sound like they are going to budge but friends and family say they will keep fighting. here is a picture of hugo mejia and his wife. the couple has three children. his wife says he showed up for a construction job at travis air force base two weeks ago and never came home. now his san rafael community is rallying to get him released. his congressman says his only offense was showing up for work. his wife says through a translator that the family needs him. >> she's very afraid. she is afraid to be here alone with her children. >> mr. mejia is being detained in a prison condition with violent criminals. he is a law-abiding upstanding member of this community. >> i.c.e. provided this statement saying mejia "unlawfully entered the u.s. after being previously deported in 2001. mr. mejia will remain in i.c.e. custody pending court proceedings." congressman huffman says he is appealing to i.c.e. to give him due process and release this man. live in san francisco, amy holyfield, abc 7 news. an investigation is under way into an attack at the pittsburgh bay point bart station. police say a woman carrying a two-year-old was trying to hitchhike a ride from the station sunday night. another woman refused to give her a lift and the suspect beat the driver with a rock. the attacker is still on the run this morning. the victim suffered minor injuries. the wife of the alameda county sheriff's deputy arrested for a deadly dui crash is facing new alcohol-related charges. on the left you see a mug shot following yarenit mallihan's arrest. then on the right friday's arrest when she was found on the ground in pleasanton. police arrested her for being drunk in public. this is her third alcohol or drug-related arrest. she was pulled over in pleasanton for driving under the influence with her ten-year-old in the car months before the dwi crash in san ramon. we are learning more about the crash that killed two men at lake barryessa last week. the plane crashed shortly after. that's from the ntsb's preliminary accident report. icon aircraft owns the plane. the company says its pilot was flying with a new person on board to the person about amphibious aircraft. >> dejuan rice reportedly shod and is linked to another murder that happened days before. rice has been indicted for both murders. at the time of the crimes, he was in a richmond city program called the office of neighborhood safety. it provides mentoring, guidance and payment for young men with the goal of reducing gun violence. police say the victims in both murders that race is connected to were shot to death. a woman is accused of causing $10,000 worth of damage to a south bay pre-school. police arrest ee eed momila. it happened at the montessori school. rooms were ransacked, furniture destroyed. the damage was so extensive the school was closed for repairs. it's not clear if monila had any connection to the school. look at the ways northern california honored peace officers' memorial day. the office of emergency services posted this photo of the memorial monument in sacramento. you can see san rafael's police chief diana bishop tweeting out this video of a flag flying at half-staff yesterday. then far over here you can see campbell's police department posting this photo of the city's water tower lit up in blue to honor the officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. we'll start with a look at what's going on. it should been a golden gate bridge but it's wall nut creek. you can see traffic moving south towards 24 from 680. if you're on the bay it will be breezy. maybe nice for sailing and for doing some kite surfing there. how about them flock walking the dog. thinking about taking a walk? on southbound 101 in the green at nine minutes. next traffic update at 5:40. happening today, the man convicted of kidnapping and murdering sierra lamar will be back in court. >> the process of deciding whether he's going to get the death penalty or life in prison begins. matt keller live in san jose. >> reporter: good morning reggie and natasha, the jury will hear emotional testimony today but in the end they will only have two choices, give antolin garcia torres the death penalty or life in prison without parole. here's legal analyst stephen clark. >> clearly at this point the prosecution holds all the cards. at a minimum, garcia torres will never get out of >> antolin garcia torres was convicted one week ago of sierra lamar's kidnapping and murder. a defense psychologist is lined up to take the stand to testify about his troubled family life while growing up. defense attorneys want to show a 21-minute video of garcia torres at a family birthday party. the prosecution can call up family and friends to make victim statements on how the death of sierra lamar has impacted them. today's proceedings are scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. matt keller, abc 7 news. 5:31. now on to a crisis brewing at the white house. this morning a defiant president trump says he had an absolute right to share information with russia. the president tweeted his first comments in response to a report he divulged classified information in a meeting with top russian officials last week. mr. trump said he discussed terrorism and airline flight safety but didn't mention whether the information was classified. democrats and republicans are calling for an investigation. many fear the meeting may have put confidential sources at risk as well as relationships with u.s. allies. those within the intelligence community say this is caused for concern. >> when information like this is provided by a foreign government it's only shared on a limited basis with people in the u.s. government and it's certainly not shared broadly with people outside the u.s. government so this is a major major problem. >> legal experts say presidents have brought authority to disclose classified information making them virtually immune from prosecution. every other government employee with a clearance could be criminally charged. happening today, the families of 10 people who died in oakland's ghost ship fire are filing a lawsuit against the building's owner and manager. 36 people died in the fire, several families have already filed individual lawsuits claiming the building was a fire trap and that the owner and leaseholder ignored safety hazards. the dilapidated building had been converted illegally into a living area. records show firefighters were called to inspect the property but citations were never issued. a mountain view cyber security firm says there are clues pointing to north korea as the culprit in the massive ransomware attacks. experts at symantec say the code the hackers used is similar to the ones used in attacks against sony pictures and two international banks. those attacks were linked to north korea. friday's attack crippled more than 300,000 computers in more than 150 countries. happening today the u.n. security council is meeting to discuss north korea's latest missile test. the missile flew for a half hour before landing in the sea of japan. north korea claims the new type of missile can carry heavy nuclear warheads. some skeptics say that's unlikely. diplomats say the u.s. and china are working on new sanctions against the north. a ucsf psychiatrist is out on bail after pleading not guilty to charges of the uploading and trading child foreign. police arrested dr. billy lockhart last week. as a condition of his release, he's not allowed to use the internet, have contact with kids or set foot on the ucsf campus where he is suspended from his position. he was arrested along with benjamin martin after police say they found more than 1200 files of child foreign in their home. the family of a man who died after being tased by rohnert park police is demanding answers. the man is identified as 41-year-old branch roth. police say he was drunk when he was confronted by two officers outside of a motel friday night. the officers used a taser to subdue him and he died moments later. the family is questioning whether officers were properly trained and if they followed federal guidelines warning them that tasing a drunk person could cause death. >> often times we see these death cases as a result of untrained officers using a a taser against a person where policy suggests they should not. >> roth is the older brother of isa roth being seen tased 20 times by sonoma county jail deputies. the county paid more than a million dollars for that incident. a convicted felon on probation was busted again in the north bay after police found several illegal or stolen items inside a home. several sonoma county police departments teamed up to conduct a compliance check on a home in mark meadow drive in santa rosa and when they got there they say they saw someone throwing a gun outside of a window. they found six firearms, illegal drugs, $25,000 in cash and two stolen motorcycles. police arrested 25-year-old omar cabrera and now he faces multiple charges. a move that may make commuters on the peninsula happy. crews will break ground on a new project whose aim is to ease congestion on a stretch of willow. the interchange on highway 101 will include eight lanes, a dedicated bike lane on the overpass, too. work is expected to take at least two years. stanford university has reportedly spent $130 million to provide housing for faculty and staff near campus. according to our media partners the bay area news group, the university bought this upscale apartment and retail complex in los altos. there are 167 units at that building on el camino real. the bay area news group reports the complex was worth $85 million last year so the university ended up paying much more than the building's previous value. tonight the warriors hope to go up 2-0 against the spurs in the western conference finals. kawhi leonard is out after reinjuring his ankle sunday during a play involving the dubs pachulia. the nba says pachulia won't be disciplined. gregg popovich says that's a dirty play. >> we're up 23 want to head back to san francisco where we had kind of a strange situation. a wheelie dumpster, so a pretty large piece of debris. we have a location update northbound 101 before the 280 merge. originally it sounded like it was southbound 101 but someone it that so i'm not sure the extent of the damage chp is with them. we're not seeing significant delays so that's been one of our only issues. we are off to a quiet start. a quick check of the south bay, san jose 101 and 880. everything looks great there, too. quick mass transit note to pass along. san francisco bay ferry, if you take the ferry from alameda or oakland to pier 41, make sure you check the schedule. the late a.m. and midday departures today, tomorrow and thursday will be terminating at the ferry building due to some maintenance at the pier 41 dock. we'll look at drive times at 5:50. >> let me start by saying this is amazing video of wildlife in their natural habitat. i should say it gets a little circle of life-y at the end. multiple killer whales showing off their playful side. and when i say playful, i mean killer. drone video shows the orcas breeching and pec slapping. monterey bay aquarium says this is the best time to spot killer whales because gray whales are traveling through the area during migration. these killer whales become social after feeding on a gray whale calf so they're celebrating the hunt. but, you know, killer whales are going to killer whale. that's how it goes. they hunt seals and sea lions and dolphins. so the circle of life and it moves us all. it seems to be a trend
