>> reporter: wearing a padded green jump suit, shackled at the waist. the d.a. explained after the hearing that that suit is typically used to keep an inmate from harming herself while in custody. 51-year-old dawn raines hughes showed no emotion as she walked into a courtroom surrounded by two public defenders. she did not enter a plea in the two felony counts of her four-year-old grandson at her home. >> one count is murder, the second account is child abuse causing death. >> if found guilty on either count, raines hughes faces 25 years to life there prison. >> she admitted to the intentional act of drowning the child. >> today, there's a small memorial at the duplex where he was killed. >> the crime is absolutely horiffic. i was here a week ago on an arraignment for a care provider who killed a 17-month-old child in her care. and here, a week later, i'm here again for an arraignment. only this time, a grandparent who's killed a four-year-old child. >> raines hughes is expected back in court next thursday. in fairfield, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> today, we're hearing from bill cosby's attorney for the first time since the actor was arrested. cosby's attorney calls it a political ma noour. nooufr. >> what we we have is a fulfillment of a campaign promise from a client in oshder to get into office. >> cosby denies the allegation but hasn't formally entered a plea. >> have you seen the video yet? it breaks yourhearted. but there's also some good news this afternoon. a kitten used as a chew toy by a dog is on the road to recovery. abc 7 news where the 8-year-old kitten is recovering from 20 deep puncture wounds. smurph will undergo surgery next week to repair his wounds. he's doing much better and making footprints. the two kitens will be placed in foster care next week together. >> causing traffic delays in the impact muni service right now. at church and 24th street to fix the sewer line failure that led to the sink hole. traffic is closed right now. officials expected to reopen the street before midnight. >> the search for a serial robber considered dangerous and on the move. he may have just struck again today. >> a closer look at this massive ship that moved into the bay today. what makes it unique. and new at 4:30, the battle brewing over soccer, youth soccer, in particular, and the fight to keep people off the field. and, at 4:11, taking a live look at your toll bridge traffic, we're doing well right now. stay with us, we are back after a short break. a serial robber has struck again. it happened this morning in san leandro. showing the man walking to the store with a bandanna and a gun. abc 7 news reporter has the detail. >> the latest target was this gas station on east 14th. surveillance video shows the man coming in at 7:35 this morning. he wears a mask and points a pistol. look closely. this is a scary character. >> at one point, he actually went behind the character and forced her down on to the floor and he crouched down as well as another customer came in and put money on the counter to pay for the gas. the robbery was still in progress. >> about 20 minutes later, police say the same man hit this dry cleaners on davis street. it's just a bit west of one of the four 7-eleven stores he robbed last week. the robber, who always wears a black hoodie, got away before police arrived. on christmas eve, he pulled up and the clerk says the armed bandit cleared out the register. >> i think it's pretty crazy. i think people need to realize there's not enough money here to rob anybody. >> last time, he robbed a gas station in walnut creek. investigators are asking the public to help identify the criminal before someone gets hurt. >> they can become more violent. this person is desperate and that's why we need to get him off the street. >> carolyn tyler, abc 7 news. >> san francisco police just released this surveillance video breaking into an audi service center and stole seven vehicles and then drove into a lock box to get the keys. the vehicles are worth between 40 and $50,000 each. police are investigating if someone with knowledge of the business took part in the heist. >> a new report says google is looking to expand at the former alameda air station. google wants to take over a 65,000 square foot building in the complex. the technology giant has been at the former military base since 2013. the worst return for the standa standard&poor's since 2011. despite the increase, jobless claims have stayed below the key level of 300,000 for ten months. mortgage rates dropped with a slight increase to hike a key short term interest rate two weeks ago. mortgage buyer freddie mack said the average rate rose to 4.9% up from 3.96% last week. there was an unusual site on the san francisco bay today. this is video of the largest container ship to ever come to the u.s. as it pulled into the bay. abc 7 news reporter is live at the port of oakland with a look. jonathan? >> well, you can see it behind me, the benjamin franklin, the largest ship ever to come to a u.s. port. ships this size has been sailing to europe for a while. but this is the first time anything close to this big has sailed to the u.s. it is one-third larger than anything that's traveled to oakland. this morning, that's what a group of people who stood right here was doing. >> what brings you out here today? >> to look at a really big deal. >> the economist drove out from sacramento to watch history unfold. >> we're waiting for the largest container vessel ever to call at a u.s. port. a small crowd gather red at a quarter mile long and wider than a 10-lane freeway, it's stacked high with consumer goods from asia. >> something that big coming into the bay is pretty impressive. >> but more impressive was the effort to get it here. the port had to build taller cranes and train pilots using simulators for the toughest parallel parking job ever. >> they are looking for ports in the u.s. where they can deploy these ships. and the port of oakland is one of the first in the united states that can handle them. for the port, the effort is well worth it. >> a number of logistical snafus. >> this is to prove to the shipping lines that they can handle the ships. >> 73,000 jobs depend on the port. that is one of the primary missions of the port. >> and there's another advantage. you would think a big ship means big pollution. but, pound-for-pound, it's way better than the old ones. >> it burns less fuel, it burns cleaner fuel. we'll see fewer ships calling at california ports while handling the same volume or increasing volumes of cargo. >> at the port of oakland, jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. >> viewers have been sharing their photos of the ship on social media. share your pictures and videos with us using the hash tag, abc7now. cold again. yeah, definitely meteorologist drew tuma is here with our update. >> yeah, it's going to get co colder tonight with a freeze warning in effect. the weather is going to be just fine if you're bundled up with gloves, scarves and a heavy jacket onto watch the fireworks. giving us the last night off on this last day, outside we go. live from our exploratorium, you cannot find a single cloud in the sky. beautiful baby blue overus right now. forecast, cold new year's eve celebration. a sunny and cool start to 2016. our next chance of rain will come in sunday night. upper 40s to low 50s, that's our cold spot, 51 in san francisco, 52 san jose and 54 in santa rosa. here's your hour-by-hour forecast. slowly step down through the mid to lower 40s. overnight low, right around 40 degrees. but your windchill is going to be in the mid 30s. so, overnight tonight, we have that freeze warning that goes into effect at 10:00, dropping to 36 in oakland, 32 in san jose. a chilly 250 in napa. 40 in san francisco and a cold 27 in livermore. bright, beautiful, a great start to the new year. we'll track our first chance of rain, it's a one on our impact scale. from sunday night into monday morning, you can see some light showers are likely. this is a weak-moving system that moved out by midday on monday. total rainfall very light in nature. probably a quarter of an inch, maybe as much as a half an inch in some spots. but a stronger storm looks to move in on tuesday. this will be a two on our storm impact scale. it will be rain, but, also, some gusty winds. tuesday morning, i do think we could likely see some wind gusts, 20 to perhaps 40 miles per hour. so a very active pattern looks to be setting up into early next week. here's your accuweather 7 day forecast. a bright new year's day on friday. clouds arrive on saturday, there's that chance of rain on sunday. the wet morning on monday, a 1 on our storm impact scale. tuesday, that's when a stronger storm moves in. that's a two on our impact scale. likely showers on wednesday and also on thursday. the heavy jackets, the sunglasses tomorrow and then early next week we'll break out the rain gear. >> all right, thank you, drew. up next, it's not too late to giv a local band is getting ready for the big day tomorrow. they were performing at the band fest there. and you can watch the tournament of roses parade right here on abc 7 tomorrow starting at 8:00 a.m. a big new year's eve for cal quarterback jared goff. goff is giving up his senior year and making himself available for the nfl draft. the cal star's nfl stock has jumped after passing for six touchdowns in a big win two days ago. he's projected to be the first or second quarterback taken in the 2016 nfl draft. the new year's party started early at a san francisco goodwill store. donors are met with music and are given prizes like movies and zoo tickets. get a tax credit before the year runs out. >> we're making it easy for people. people are thinking year round and we create a celebration. this is about 50 to a hundred times what we get on a regular day. >> goodwill expected to fill 100 large trucks. it's still going on until 5:00 this evening. >> that's what you call a win/win, right? what they believe is their kids are in the group. and their kids will be a forefront of facebook and the photos. these moms really have no pity for how it affects another child. >> so what should a parent do? >> you are going to say something, it's important to be calm and stay positive and kind. now, oftentimes, these people won't change because they like themselves just the way they are. >> as for rachel, she found a new camp that she loves and learned an important lesson. >> i think we have to teach our children that life goes on and how to be strong and that bad stuff happens and there's good stuff on the court. jane king has today's wellness report. a new study says vitamin d in large doses can help people with ms. the research was found in johns hopkins school of medicine. it found the higher the level of vitamin d in the blood, the lower the protein. past studies have shown that low levels make people more susceptible to ms. if you're on a hover board, you should be wearing a helmet according to doctors. with hoverboards, many different kinds of injuries can happen and problems with hitting your head can cause permanent damage. the doctors recommend why using them. beginning to show that cancer survivors face unique issues compared to people who haven't had cancer and that does include higher medical costs. more a year on medical costs. kanszer survivors are also more likely to have employment disability. and the nation's state parks are promoting a healthy new year with hikes. tomorrow marks the 20th annual hike. it's somehow special events planned like nighttime heights and hot chocolate afterwards. an amazing experience on the ground or everyone frost and just be able to experience the outdoor landscape in a different way. from the nasdaq, i'm jane king, here's to your health. >> it's time now for ask finney. 7 on your side's answering your questions. our first comes to what happens to the money that is collected by the lottery?
