Afternoon. An inmate named Janelle Carter was given treatment in an outpatient clinic. He somehow overpowered a custody officer. Even though he was in chains, waist chains as well as handcuffs. They have mentioned the white boxers in case hes discarded some of his clothing to sort of disguise himself from being spotted. Now, he is freshly has a freshly shaven head and a goatee. A man is in Critical Condition after getting punched in the head at a park in San Francisco. This happened at 8 00 last night in north beach. Police say the victim and his friends were drinking in the park. There was a fight and he was punched in the head and the suspect ran away. The victim has a fractured skull and internal bleeding. Police are still looking for the man who punched him. Investigators are searching for evidence on highway 101 in san jose after somebody shot at two chp officers overnight during a traffic stop. The chp cruiser was hit, but nobody was hurt. As matt keller explains investigators want to know if the suspect who took off was targeting Law Enforcement officers. Reporter an unusual scene in san jose this morning. Police officers with flashlights out walking in the middle of highway 101 between tully and stully road. Last night two officers were on northbound 101 when at least one shot was fired. They hear a loud noise. See a flash. Then obviously after further investigation they discover that their patrol vehicle was struck Reporter Office toers and the driver the officers and the drivers were not hurt. 101 was closed as they canvassed the area. Theyre still trying to determine what kind of gun was used and if the shots came from a moving car or the surrounding neighborhood around 101 and tully road. Doing car stops in the middle of the night is a dangerous part of the chps job. Now investigators are trying to determine if someones targeting them. If something comes to light where we determine this was a targeted attack then well take the appropriate measures but again, nothing right now that would lead us to believe that. We were at the Oakland International school as players celebrated an agreement that will turn this Asphalt Court into a soccer field with artificial turf. Tensions rose after the soccer team used the baseball field next door and damaged the grass. It was maintained by a Parents Group for the oakland team. The agreement will cut into the baseball field at one corner. Theyre going to bring in the right field fence and push out the center field fence so the center field wont lose much or any of the area. But it will provide a natural playing space for the soccer. The Oakland Unified School district will use 1 million from its school Bond Money Fund to build the soccer field for the students. A freak accident involving a shoelace leads to surgery for a 7yearold girl. Shes now recovering at stanfords Lucille Packard Childrens Hospital. Chris wynn visited her today. I tripped on my shoelace and fell on the curb. And i hit my side on it. Shell be out of school for the next two weeks but doctors have already given her some homework. Just to walk walk three times a day. And its very tricky because theres lots of pressure. Animal services came to the rescue of a young deer trapped in a fence in loss altoes hills today. A photo shows the fawn all jammed inside these iron oh, just awful. An officer from the Animal Services covered the fawns head in a cloth to try to keep it calm. The officer used a carjack to bend the iron fence and free the fawn. She immediately right there, took off into the woods to rejoin her family. The metal fence caused some bruising but the officer believes the fawn will be okay. A lot of people turned out today hoping to adopt one of the puppies abandoned in san rafel. A man found the puppies in a box on tuesday. He brought the Rottweiler Lab mixes to the marin county shelter. There was a line out the door. Fill out the application and was granted by wish and i got this little guy. Hes so cute. We really hope that people if they werent able to get one of them, maybe theyll adopt an older dog. The rest of the puppies are available next week. A nearby day care, action day primary plus is on lockdown. Sheriff deputies have identified the inmate as john l. Carter. He was getting treatment at a clinic at valley Medical Center, where he fought and injured a deputy and got away. The deputys injuries are not life threatening. Carter has been identified as a black male, 511, 220 pounds. We are told he was incarcerated on child abuse charges molestation, five counts of molestation. He has a tattoo on the left side of his neck that says alice. Also has a freshly shaved head and goatee. Even if their sentence included the possibility of parole. Changes in the law and politics are leading to a Record Number of convicted murderers walking out of prison. This afternoon, a sister and brother are fighting to keep their parents killer locked up. I guarantee you he will kill again. Thats the grim prediction from cheryl and gary efront moments after their parents killer was recommended for parole at the prison. Hes not out yet, and the family is doing everything they can to stop his release. Ive tried to take care of justice for the very best people i ever known. Cheryl and gary have tried for years to remember how their parents lived, not how they died. I was standing ankle deep in dried blood and it was splattered everywhere. They were killed in san diego in 1977, during a robbery at their clothing store. Former employee Jose Gonzalez was convicted of first degree murder in the case. Their heads were wrapped in blankets and they were bludgeoned to death both of them. It was a horribly painful bloody way to die. Gonzalez was caught two days later, pawning essies jewelry. A crime committed like this today, a torture murder, lying in wait murder, all those would be grounds for life without parole and the death penalty. But those laws simply didnt exist back then. Instead, gonzalez was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. Well for the past 37 years he has been denied parole seven times. Until last week. The ephrons were at the hearing to testify. Well, my mother is here. These are the earrings that she was wearing when he murdered her. I bring her to the parole hearing every time. The board recommended gonzalez be paroled. How could this happen . How could this possibly represent justice . Under california law, governor jerry brown now has the power to reject the recommendation. Hes not commenting on the case but during his term hes allowed a Record Number of lifers to be paroled. Go back 15 years or so and nobody was getting out. Robert wiseberg is with the stanford criminal justice center. A 2008 Court Decision forced parole boards to look beyond the original crime and focus more on whether the person is a danger to society now. Most of the people who get life with the possibility of parole sentences are there for some kind of homicide. The chance that any one of them will commit another homicide after he gets out is pretty much zero. Its just about never happened. He says the main reason why lifer parolees dont kill again is their age. Older, slower and more benign. Jose gonzalez is now 59. The ephrons say that makes no difference. He remains a serious threat. The viciousness of his crime, a person who was 22 years old and had that as part of his constitution still has that when hes 59 years old. It could be months before the case gets to the governors desk. The ephrons are hoping for a big public outcry to sway the decision. Gonzalezs lawyer says if his client is released hes being accepted into two transitional housing programs. One in berkeley. Democrats say a House Committee investigating the benghazi attack should withdraw its partisan subpoena for Hillary Clintons personal emails. Not everybody agrees. Abc News Reporter Karen Travers with more on how she violated policy. For all the four years that Hillary Clinton was secretary of state she was in violation of the departments email policy. Thats according to that Senior State Department official. The only comment clinton has made about the brewing controversy was a tweet wednesday night. Calling on the state department to publicly release the emails shes turned over. We are doing a review of her emails for public release. As she asked us to do. A Senior State Department official tells abc that while clinton was secretary, Department Employees were only allowed to use private emails if they turned them over to be used in the computers. Until they did that they were in violation of the rules but clinton didnt turn hers over until late last year. Im not going to prejudge the outcome of the release of the 55,000 pages. Back when clinton ran for president the first time, she was quite vocal about those who used private emails. Our constitution is being shredded. We know about the secret wiretaps, we know about the secret military tribunals the secret white house email accounts. At least one democrat former chair of the South Carolina democratic party, and a supporter of Vice President biden lashed out at clintons email practices in an interview on cnn. Sky 7 hd is live over the scene of an intense man hunt in san jose for an inmate who made a run for freedom after being treated at a medical clinic.
