The you can see candles, flowers and mementos surrounding it. Fans are stopping by in tribute to a man considered a comic genius. At 8 30 tonight, the tcl chinese theater on hollywood theater will dim its forecourt lights for one minute to honor Robin Williams. We have Live Team Coverage on the life and death of Robin Williams. We begin with abc 7 reporter Wayne Freedman live in marin county with what we learned today from investigators, wayne. That News Conference was kind of gruesome in detail. Reporter it was, larry. Robin williams death isnt just a national and world story, its a bay area story. This is where he grew up. This is where he went to high school. Behind me at college of marin is where he first appeared on a stage. But today was a strange mixture of warm memories and cold hard facts from the investigation. The preliminary cause of death is asphyxia due to hanging. Reporter in marin county today, the Sheriffs Department says it is handling Robin Williams death like any other examination, but clearly its more than that. Reporters from around the world listened to every small detail. Williams wife had gone to sleep alone at 10 30 p. M. In a different room. She had left the next morning without awakening him. Just before noon, the actors personal assistant became worried about him when he did not respond to a doorknock. At this time, the personal assistant was able to gain access to mr. Williams bedroom and entered the bedroom to find mr. William clothed in a seated position, unresponsive with a belt secured around his neck with the other end of the belt wedged between the closed closet door and the door frame. His right shoulder area was touching the door with his body perpendicular to the door and slightly suspended. Reporter it is hardly the end in anyone would have predicted for an actor and comedian who touched so many people. James dunn taught williams. He said the williams he knew seemed exactly the opposite. Thinking was a very, very kind, sweet man. Who never said a bad word about anybody, and i never heard anybody ever say a bad word about him. Reporter that was in the early 1970, before mork mindy, before the oscar, before fame. The kid from tiburon wanted to be an actor. He succeeded at that. They believe he will go down in history as a major artist like charlie chaplain. Hell be remembered as well as chaplin. Reporter at one point, i asked james dunn what he thought it was that made Robin Williams so special. What did he have . The answer he said, quote, intelligence, a fertile mind. Meantime, the Sheriffs Office wants to stress that the investigation and these results remain preliminary. A final answer will take several weeks pending a toxicology report. This house has, if you will, become sort of a shrine to the memory of Robin Williams. The floral memorial just keeps getting bigger and bigger. This home is now on the other hand by douglas. He is no hurry to remove this extemporaneous tribute. Im not about to change anything. Its all deserved, isnt it . Reporter and theyre coming from all over the world. The only mistake i didnt make is to put a bucket out front with a nickel for every picture. I would have retired years ago instead of this friday. Reporter to many of his fans, this home will forever inextricably be linked to Robin Williams. I felt i needed to come by here. Mrs. Doubtfire was a big movie for me. It was my childhood. Its cool that his memory will live on in this house and in other places and with his movies and stuff. Reporter mrs. Doubtfire was shot here in the early 1990s. Williams played a husband who disguised himself as a nanny to win back his wife who wanted a divorce because she felt he was irresponsible. He was always trying to be happy. Always trying to smile and make other people happy. Thats what i remember best of all about his movies. Reporter thats what everyone remembers about Robin Williams. Few knew just how hard he fought his demons. He always seemed so happy. And he was so upbeat. And just to hear that he suffered depression is just so sad. Its hard to believe. Reporter hard to believe, as someone said, that deep down inside he was really a sad clown. Vic lee, abc 7 news. Robin williams was a big supporter of glide memorial. This is the actor attending one of the Charity Fundraisers in which he took the stage with bill cosby. Robin williams bonded with the people at glide in a special way. He also talked openly to them about his own problems with drug addiction. When robin would see some of the people here at glide, he would immediately have empathy for him and they with him, because they understood there was something going on that was beyond any of us. And yet it was a compassion act. Robin williams began donating his time and money to glide Memorial Church over 30 years ago. He even donated these autographed objects for a fundraising auction. He helped project open hand in a big way in the late 1990s. That organization was about to lose 750,000 in funding to retrofit its building, and thats when the comedian step in. Coming down to the 11th hour, we were about 50,000 short. And robin and his wife stipulated and made that gift. So we were able to meet that goal. And as a result, what were doing here today in this building, 2500 meals going out to people who are critically ill and also to seniors in the bay area. Thats part of his legacy. Well, the Williams Family has not yet announced funeral arrangements or whether there will be a public memorial in the bay area. For her part, congresswoman nancy pelosi wants more done to help so many people like Robin Williams who are suffering from mental illness. When people say he took his life, i say, no he died of an illness. You know, he had challenges that were an illness. But sometimes something so high profile and so heartbreaking can give us a boost to do even more. Pelosi said she worked hard for the Mental Health parity act in 1996 which will require that Mental Health benefits have the same coverage of medical and surgical benefits. Robin williams Death Outside of his fame is not that unusual, unfortunately, because its so prevalent. The problem of depression. According to the centers for disease control, more people in the u. S. Die by suicide every year than in car accidents. Its a shocking fact. Abc 7 News ReporterLaura Anthony talked with one east bay mother who lost her adult daughter to suicide. A case with some eerie similarities to Robin Williams. My daughter jenny died by suicide in 2008. Reporter Teresa Ferguson knows well what the family of Robin Williams is going through. She lost her 31yearold daughter, jeanni clacker to suicide sex years ago. The method, hanging. Eventually, she just she gave up hope that she was ever going to be able to get better. And in fact one of the final things she said was i dont think i can ever have kids. And so how can i get married knowing that i can never have kids because i cant take care of myself. Reporter since jennys death, ferguson has devoted much of her energy to an Organization Called out of the darkness, a National Foundation dedicated to suicide prevention. Knowing the star battled depression, ferguson recently tried to contact williams publicist to see if he might speak at their october march in oakland. Ferguson strongly believed the biggest key to battling depression is to erase the stigma there. Are still many, many people who wont even admit that their child died by suicide. There is something wrong with that, you know. We have to we have to get to the point where we see this as an illness, a disease that needs to be treated. Reporter like williams, ferguson says it appeared her daughter had everything to live for. A successful career and at the time of her death, jenny was engaged to be married. This forced a closure of all westbound lanes across the san mateo bridge for about four hours today. Two big rigs collided on highway 92 near foster city boulevard. Dry cement and diesel fuel spilled from one of the trucks just before 9 00 this morning, and drivers had to inch through traffic for several miles, beginning in hayward. The chp diverted others from westbound 2. Thats right before the toll plaza. Take a look at this backup. Westbound 92 reopened about 1 00 this afternoon. And taking a live look at it right now, it looks as though it is moving a whole lot better than it did earlier today. And thats a relief for anybody who has to cross the san mateo bridge this afternoon. A lot of that traffic headed for the san mateo bridge ended up on the bay bridge. You got stuck in that. I got stuck in that. I can testify to the problems there this afternoon. All right. Moving on. An update now on an issue the iteam first broke and has been following for more than a year. Now lawmakers today announced a new effort to eliminate the backlog of untested rape kits in the bay area. San jose congressman mike honda says about 41 million has been earmarked to help complete the testing nationwide. These kits in connection with criminal cases. There are half million untested kits in the u. S. Including 2,000 in alameda county. The funding still needs final approval. The iteam first reported on this issue in may of 2013. Since then a state bill has been introduced to expedite the processing of the kits. The aids memorial in San Francisco park has been vandalized. Five trees or tree ferns, a park fence were all damaged. A rec and parks spokesperson believes that it may be the same person who vandalized a memorial back in march. No arrests made at this point. Well, mandatory water rationing is now on tap in the east bay, but the new limits are not across the board. Water users will face restrictions on outside use. Abc 7 reporter joining us from neptune park in alameda with more on todays move and what it means. Nick . Reporter absolutely, larry, cheryl, you know alameda started their water restrictions in january. Thats why this tree is in desperate need of water and the leaves have turned brown. Also is the reason why this park is a dry, brittle mess, and everything in it is just blowing away. In january, the city manager mandated a 20 water reduction. Reporter alameda city leaders saw what the drought was doing and took action early on by implementing water conservation. Eight months of tough action have left their city parks looking like this. Weve actually lost a few trees here and there. But thats thats the price youre going to pay. Reporter but elsewhere in the east bay, users havent been as conservative, either neglecting cutback on water usage or ignoring the call to serve all together. Today the east bay water municipals board took action. Is going to declare water shortage emergency and enact mandatory Outdoor Watering restrictions for all of its customers. That means tougher rules on when, where and how the water districts 1. 3 million customers can use water. I water on wednesdays and saturdays, what is it . Is it five minutes . Is it half an hour . Reporter anticipating that there may be confusion, the water agency has placed the conservation guidelines on its website and introduced a new page to report water abuse issues, insisting that the goal is not to punish customers, but rather to educate them. Alana ellis has gotten the message. Her neighbors have nothing to show for lawn but weeds, and it has been nearly three months since her car has had a bath. And when she washes it, she is sure to use the hose with the shutoff valve to reduce waste. Try to think about it as help as much as i can.
