we're here on butts canyon road. it's all happening right now behind me in that canyon. that is the plume of smoke that you're talking about. again, it does look like the end f the world. we were back there, and we can show you video of what it looks like back there. big flames, trees going up in a matter of seconds. the noise, the sound is incredible. this fire is clearly generating its own winds. this side of the fire has already been evacuated. those folks are over at pope valley elementary school. now what they're concerned about most is berryessa early we spoke with a woman who owned a horse ranch. she had to evacuate some children, some campers and horses. >> we were able to e vak wait the kids out of the camp. we probably still have 30 horses. but all the kids are safe and sound and they're out. >> and again they had to evacuate horses. she was still concerned about horses inside. at this point at the location, we're showing you the the area. it's smoldering out there. the big concern is in the canyon behind me. to the north and east, but the fire is very active. they've been able to fight it to some extent from the air. they haven't been able to get enough equipment in in there to get it out. again, it's moving north and east. last i heard was 600 acres and spreading. and the very latest is they are evacuating the ber rrberryessa s community. and where am i here? plume of smoke and the way it's operating. i know you've seen the video. the firefighter saying the wind was not helping them at all. >> no, certainly not helping krairl cheryl at the moment the firefighters think they have it under control, here comes a gust. let's look at the area right now. it's hot there. not like yesterday. it's 93. that's pretty hot. only 25%. winds at the moment are relatively light. the steady winds. gusts occasionally right now to 11 miles an hour. but there have been stronger gusts. there will be stronger gusts to come later. let's go ahead and take a look at winds generally in the bay area. parts of the delta are getting gusts to 28 miles per hour in napa right now. and the fire concerns in other parts of the the state. a red flag warning in effect until 10:00 tonight because of the thunderstorm outbreak there. the chance of lightning strikes will ignite fires. but it's slightly to the north. here's a live camera view from lake tahoe. so that's pretty scores. turning to the other news of the day. the father of shooting victim oscar grant. the former police officer shot and killed grant in 2009. grant's father filed a lawsuit claiming an unlawful relationship. he had a limited relationship with his son and therefore did not compensate him for oscar grant's death. >> had communication by phones, letter, cards and all the like. for the jury to say he did not have a familiar relationship with his son is to me, absurd. >> they have already settled wrongful death lawsuits with the mother, girlfriend and daughter. san jose police are looking for a second suspect with the connection of a sexual assault of an 85-year-old woman and the robbery of her home. >> a stolen suv crashed into the home about ten minutes after the home invasion robbery in a different part of san jose. nick smith hads her story. >> he didn't care. skbr. >> reporter: this eyewitness is describing what happened after two teenagers crashed this stolen suv into the home. the cops were telling him to get out of the vehicle. hands up. at first i thought the person had died. there was no movement. then a short guy came came out. he took off running. he ran. the cop ran after him. >> reporter: san jose police confirm one of the the boys was arrested after being pinned inside the stolen suv, which prevented him from running away. both teens suspects in a home invasion robbery and sexual assault. >> it was a sharp object that he was in possession of. again n is situation like this, there is a sense of urgency to identify this additional suspect. >> investigators revealed something else. parts of the home were tagged with paint. >> there was some graffiti within the house, and again we're trying to confirm if it was existing graffiti or if it was there as a result of the suspect. plr police told me they believe the the spray paint inside the home is unusual. they're not ready to make the connection to a gang tie or gang initiation. they only tell me their suspect remains at large. nick smith, abc 7 news. 49ers linebacker smith will not face criminal charges stemming from an accident at los angeles international armt. police accused smith of making a false bomb threat after confrontation with tsa agents. they will hold a hearing to discuss the matter with smith. smith faces sentencing for weapons possession and drunk driving charges in san jose on july 25th. a federal appeals court said today it will take another look at barry bonds' conviction for obstruction of justice. a jury found bonds guilty in 2011 after prosecutors accused him of giving evasive testimony to a grand jury. they were investigating the use of performance enhancing drugs by elite athletes. three other judges have already upheld the sentence. police were back today to evict squatters from a former military facility. it has become haven for the homeless. it's at tennessee and wilson avenue. the building has been vacant for nearly 20 years and neighbors say the problem is getting worse. many of them came back overnight. a big freeway closure begins tomorrow night in san francisco. it's going to last through the fourth of july weekend. the closure starts 90% of the day. >> reporter: they fired her and said she refused to leave and threatened to sue. according to california law, the family couldn't force her out without an eviction notice that could take anywhere from 30 to 45 days. >> i felt so helpless in this situation. >> stretton is now living out of her car. her belongings remain in bracamonte's house. she's been placed on california's litigation list for becausing the legal system. despite her history, stretton maintains she's not at fault. >> i bought a substantial amount of my own food. the food i did get was terrible. i didn't have access to the laundry room hardly ever. i didn't have access to the bathroom hardly ever. the air-conditioning wasn't on. i think they're the con artists. >> the family says they're very disturbed by the nanny's comments and say none of her statements are true. a new state law went into effect today affecting anyone shopping for smoke alarms. starting today, all new smoke alarts must have a lithium ion battery that does not have to be replaced for ten years. the goal is to reduce the number of deaths because of dead batteries inside smoke alarms. >> the smoke alarts are recommended to be replaced every ten years, so the concept is never to worry about having a dead or missing battery. >> alarms with replaceable batteries can be sold for another year. well, folks in the midwest face a job of cleaning up after a powerful storm did extreme damage. hurricane strength winds knocked out trees and power lines in the chicago area. some braved floodwaters to make it to o'hare international airport. the same storm put on quite a show as lightning hit the willis tower, chicago's tallest buildings, three times within about 20 seconds. storm forecasters says that eased the muggy conditions. >> not only dutz lightning strike twice, but three times. we've been following this fire. this is now at 600 acres. evacuations have been ordered in the berryessa estates area, and this fire spread pretty rapidly since lunchtime today. >> that's right, cheryl. it was a very tremendous plume of smoke being picked up by the radar. what's showing up as green on the screen is not rainfall, as is often depicted by green, but the large plume of smoke coming from the continually growing fire, i should say. and the winds are not helping, of course. it's a bit breezy up there. temperatures, however, are dropping off sharply from yesterday's levels. look at the 24-hour temperature change. 18 degrees. cooler in concord and fairfield. all locations reporting a drop in temperature, except for half-moon bay. the fire is still warm and dry there. occasional gusting winds are not helping the firefighters. here from the rooftop camera you see blue skies over the bay. 69 in oakland. 77 in san jose. 75 in gilroy. 61 at half-moon bay. another live view from emeryville looking at low clouds and fog building up on the coastline. 69 in na pa. 82 in novato and fairfield. and one more live view from the golden gate bridge camera showing low clouds hovering by the golden gate. we'll see foggy conditions with spotty, early morning drizzle. it will have further warming through the weekend into early next week. here's how the cloud pattern development today. showing low clouds and fog hugging the coastline. a little area of counter-clockwise circulation there. water vapor satellite image shows a clearly defined trough. a sharp dip in the jet stream. reenforcing the steady seabreeze that we have right now. so here's the forecast animation. we'll see low clouds and fog pushing along the coastline. overnight lows will be generally in the mid to upper 50s, as they have been for the last several nights. despite the presence of fog, pretty mild overnight. and tomorrow we'll see fog floating back to the coastline once again. high temperatures in the mid 70s around the bay. mid to upper 80s in the warmest inland location. here's the accuweather seven-day at least five structures. this is a live picture from sky 7 hd. you can see the enormous amount of smoke pumped in the atmosphere as a result of t flames. evacuations have been issued for the berryessa estates area. it all started shortly after noon in the pope valley area. the good news despite damage to structure and grassland, no reports of injuries. we'll follow on air and online. follow us on twitter for breaking news alerts. a big effort to fight crime here at the san mateo sheriff county office is adding extra patrols in the southern part of the county. >> that's because of a huge jump in home burglaries. vic lee has that story. >> reporter: in june they were 25 burglaries under the jurisdiction of the sheriff's office. then in the last week of june, a shocking jump. 11 burglaries compared to three at the same time last year. >> we are heightening our uniformed personnel in the various areas, but there's more o f a command presence. sometimes just seeing people in uniform can be a deterrent. >> reporter: sheriff investigators want to know if there's a nexus to highway 92. if burglars are coming from out of town and coming to the quiet tranquil communities dotted with big homes and tree lined streets. the so-called door knock burglaries. they hit empty homes, look for unlocked windows and doors. they'll try them open if they can. they're getting more frightening. dan's neighbor was recently a victim here in san carlos. >> they were five people asleep in the house. and somebody broke in. and ransacked the place. >> there have been several burglaries on the streets. residents have formed neighborhood watch style communities. this resident only wanted her first name used. >> somebody knocked on my door, a white van was parked outside of my house. that sort of thing. >> reporter: the advice is lock your doors, shut your windows when you leave your home. burglars, they say, commit creams when opportunity knocks. don't welcome them in. vic lee, abc 7 news. san francisco police released a total number of arrests made during the pride celebration. 70 people were arrested for public drunkenness and 75 others sent to sobering centers. 15 felon aiss and three guns were seized. state lawmakers approved a bill to honor a 17-year-old girl killed by a drunk driver in san francisco. she died on her birthday in march of last year when she was hit crossing slope boulevard. state lawmakers gave final approval to bill by assembly member tank to place a plaque in memory of this young woman. it will commemorate safety pedestrian improvements made in the area since the tragedy. the driver pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months in jail. mourners gathered in israel for funeral services for three teenagers who were kidnapped and found dead in the west bank. the bodies were recovered after a two-week search. one of the teens can be heard saying i was kidnapped. israel is blaming two hamas operatives if r the deaths. despite angry calls for revenge, israel has not yet decided how to respond to the killings. former french president nicholas sarkozy has been detained in a corruption probe. sarkozy is being questioned about an investigation. he has denied any wrong doing. >> president obama challenged house republicans to try to block his efforts. the president spoke with washington, d.c.'s key bridge the president wants congress to renew the federal highway trust fund to pay for fixing and upgrading thousands of roads across america, like that bridge behind him. >> reporter: middle class families can't wait for the folks in congress to do stuff. so sue me. as long as they're doing nothing, i'm not going to apologize for trying to do something. >> speaker of the house john boehner has threatened to sue president obama if he keeps issuing executive orders. that threat came after speaker boehner told the president that congress would not act on immigration reform this year. the u.s. navy has a new number two. for the first time in the history, a woman was pinned with the first star. kristen fisher has more from washington, d.c. admiral michelle howard has achieved many firsts. she was one of the first women to attend the naval academy. the first african-american woman to command a ship. today she became the navy's first female four-star admiral. >> if you don't believe today was a first, when i called to order four-star shoulder boards for women, they didn't exist. special contract and you are seeing the first set in the united states navy. >> she will bear the
