Good evening. Im katie marzullo. New at 11 00, police have cleared 16 squatters from a San Francisco building. They werent just seeking temporary shelter but looking to live there in the long term and it took nearly a month for the buildings owner to realize they were there. Abc 7 reporter lisa ammin glessian is live with more. Reporter the police rounded everyone up this afternoon after the Property Owners agent noticed that back gate behind me wide open. Its now lokds. But as you can see, a lot of the squatters stuff has been lined up and pulled out of the building. Many of the people who were living inside are now outside. Theyre watching their things and figuring out their next move. 16 squatters living illegally in this sixunit building were forced out by police today. I havent seen anything this big only because most buildings of this size are not left vacant for this long. One officer called this a wellorganized squatting operation. The threestory building had stood empty for six months while the new owner figured out what type of renovations to do, but word spread quickly and unattended, unguarded building was up for grabs. The idea as to fix the place up, put things in our name, and see how it went. You know, because this is what we understood to be the legal means of going about it. Reporter in other words, the squatters had a plan. To stay here long term. Without permission to go inside we found drug paraphernalia, bikes, power tools, highend electronics. Police think most of it is stolen. Every unit had power and running water. And its all been for free. The owners agent did not want to talk on camera but thinks the squatters started moving in september 1st. Still some who came in and out of here knew something was fishy. Thats why this woman only stayed for a few days. Id much rather be outside than inside illegally. Reporter police did allow most of the people to take out some of their belongings, and there was only one arrest for an unrelated warrant. The Property Owner is choosing not to file trespassing charges. In San Francisco, lisa aminute gull ezian, abc 7 news. Developing news tonight. Thats an area larger than the city of san jose. The fire is now 84 contained. Evacuation orders for two communities have been downgraded. 300 structures remain threatened. Thats down from 12,000. Even though the past two days of rain have helped firefighters, the u. S. Forest service is now worried about ash and mud polluting the streams and rivers. If that Water Quality is compromised, just the cost of cleaning that water. Potential threat of contaminants in that water is a big concern.
