>> maybe he did the right thing. moving on to some serious news. beginning with the murder case involving aaron hernandez, new documents could be released this afternoon. >> hernandez remains in custody following a brief court appearance. abc's brandi hitt has the details on this. >> reporter: former new england patriot aaron hernandez stood emotionless as prosecutors in massachusetts asked to delay his probable cause hearing because a grand jury is still kidding evidence pulled from hernandez's apartment. >> what they found was boxes of ammunition consistent with the caliber that was recovered at the homicide scene. >> reporter: the 23-year-old is accused of murdering semi-pro player, odin lloyd, last month. court documents reveal one of his two alleged accomplices told police hernandez admitted to shooting mr. lloyd. >> having someone in your organization that's involved in a murder investigation is a terrible thing. >> reporter: patriots' coach bill belichick spoke to reporters for the first time since the arrest and said he is primarily responsible for recruiting players. >> we stress high character, and we stress making good decisions. we'll continue to do this, and we'll work to do a better job of it. >> reporter: law enforcement officials tell abc news investigators are focusing on whether lloyd was killed because of information he might have had about a double homicide last year. hernandez is being investigated in connection with that drive-by shooting outside a boston nightclub. >> well, that's a pretty strong motive. they've just got to be able to prove it. >> reporter: aaron hernandez who has pleaded not guilty is held without bail with next court appearance in august. brandi hitt abc news. los angeles. a cleveland woman has been convicted of killing her fiance by poisoning his raspberry iced tea with antifreeze. holly mcfeature could face life in prison following this conviction. prosecutors say mcfeature want to end the relationship with her fiance who is the father of her two children. the defense tried to claim he drank antifreeze to commit suicide. the father of trayvon martin is on a mission, vowing to keep trayvon martin's name not dragged through the mud as it was during the trial. as for zimmerman, his first post verdict for ray into the public eye is raising some questions now. here is abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: they were the words of a father channeling anguish into action on capitol hill. >> i vow to do everything in my power not to give up the fight for him, not only to fight for trayvon but to fight for so many other young, black and brown boys of this country. >> reporter: after george zimmerman was acquitted of murdering 17-year-old trayvon martin, his father, tracy martin, made the opening remarks at the first-ever meeting of the congressional caucus on black men and boys. martin, a truck driver by profession, has appeared in multiple interviews and public appearances since the july 13th verdict. george zimmerman had all but disappeared until last week when police say he happened upon an suv that rolled over and helped the family of four escape the vehicle. witnesses called 911. >> there was tons of smoke and other people are starting to rush toward the vehicle. >> zimmerman's lawyer acknowledged the incident was often coincidental and invited the family to tell its side of the story. but fearful of retribution, the family backed out. >> they're fighting. they're worried. trembling voices. >> did they change their phone number? not answering the phone? asked for police at their house? >> they have done all that. >> reporter: one man trying to keep the spotlight on his son. the other in hiding. matt gutman, abc news. in spain a train crash killed dozens of passengers. that toll is expected to rise. rescuers were working to free people trapped inside the derailed cars. the train was packed with christian pilgrims traveling to a religious festival in the northwestern part of the country. a rookie member of the tennessee titans hailed for helping rescue a family from a burning vehicle. linebacker jonathan willard was driving off to training camp and saw smoke from an suv. when the driver pulled over, willard and a witness helped a woman, three kids and a dog get out. moments later that suv exploded. >> at the time it wasn't scary like -- i guess i just figured that i had to do it. but afterwards, i realized, you know, how dangerous and how scary it really was. >> willard stayed at the scene until fire fighters arrived and extinguished the suv. he is an undrafted free agent trying to win a spot with the titans. >> he is officially my sentimental favorite to make the titans what a great guy. >> i think so, too. he said, i am not a hero, just at the right place at the right time. >> and i'd give the glory to god. total home run. >> come on, titans. just for that. >> no slouch. led the clemson team in tackles last year. a good player. undrafted. >> he is. a player. there you go. come on, titans. >> rooting for you. a federal judge put a stop to lawsuits threatening detroit's bankruptcy and declared that he will handle any challenges. the decision is a victory for the city. but a threat to the pension plans of thousand of retirees. the ruling does not mean the bankruptcy can move forward. the judge still has to weigh the facts. that could take three months. president obama applauding a possible compromise deal on student loans. the senate passed a bill which would repeal the doubling of interest rates that went into effect on july 1st. mr. obama is now urging the house to quickly approve the bill. well, here's another sign that real estate market is rebounding. the number of new homes sold just jumped to its highest level in five years. nearly a half million single family homes sold last month despite an increase in mortgage rates. the average sale price is also up about $17,000 over last year. analysts say the trend could provide an overall boost to the entire economy. forecasters say tropical storm dorian popped up in the eastern atlantic. dorian is centered off the coast of west africa, packing winds up to 50 miles an hour. not threatening populated areas. but if it stays on its current westward course it could be just north of puerto rico by monday. >> here's what you can expect weatherwise closer to home. the big, blue section right here stretching from the great lakes southwest to arizona means wet weather. look for especially severe storms in parts of minnesota, wisconsin, nebraska and kansas. also, expect some showers along the gulf coast. >> it's cooling off in the northeastern quadrant finally with temperatures in the 70s, 80s and some 90s in the west. and sizzling triple digits across much of the south. an event that takes place this time. thousands show up to watch. though, a sudden downpour threat tuned put a damper on things. >> talking about the annual pony swim off the coast of virginia. 130 ponies paddle from barrier island. an unexpected storm made the swim especially challenging, though it was probably a bigger problem for the human spectators than it was for the ponies. that's fascinating. >> yeah. the ponies love the water. are you kidding? >> george alexander louis. >> reporter: the biggest surprise according to the palace, william and kate will not be hearing a nanny yet. they want to take care of the baby themselves. but earlier this year they did hire a housekeeper. her responsibilities include cleaning and walking their dog. as for the expects army of valets, dressers, butlers and cooks, no plans for now. the modern royals left london for bucklebury. new dad in the front seat. see mom in the back next to the newly named george in his car seat. going to spend time as so many parents do with mom's family before william, after two weeks paternity leave has to get back to work. so the couple are now in the bucolic village of bucklebury to escape the crowds and the press for some privacy and time to bond with their boy george. llama hassan, abc new, outside kensington palace in london. president obama spreads his economic message with a trip today to florida. he's set to speak at the jacksonvil jacksonville port authority. during stops in the midwest yesterday, the president had harsh words for lawmakers in the nation's capitol. he told the crowd there has to bea way to break the gridlock. >> i'm laying out my ideas to give the middle class a better shot. so now it is time for you to lay out your idea. >> americans aren't asking where are the speeches? lewinsky. contact. set off a debate what constitutes sex. later that year the house of representatives impeached the president on the grounds of perjury. acquitted by the senate a few months later. >> during the impeachment debate, floodgates opened up. politicians clamored, the denouncement of the president. turned out many of those pointing the finger should have been pointing the thumb because the campaign for new york city mayor despite the growing scandal. weiner was booed when he stepped to a microphone last night. >> he later won a round of applause when criticizing the city's housing authority. then there are the questions swirling around his wife. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: undeterred by a growing chorus calling for him to drop out, anthony weiner made it clear he intends to stay in the race for new york city mayor. >> i have things in my background that i've talked about that are legitimate for people to discuss. they're behind me. >> reporter: the biggest vote of confidence from this woman, huma abedin. >> i love him. i have forgiven him. i believe in him. >> reporter: for years the 36-year-old was a power player operating in the shadows. she has now stepped into the spotlight. anthony's made some horrible mistakes. but i do very strongly believe that that is between us. >> reporter: the disgraced former congressman now admits his extramarital sexting continued after he resigned from congress, went away to rehab, even after huma gave birth to the couple's son. abedin's support of her husband has resulted in a firestorm of criticism. >> she was way too nice in that thing. he needs to be married to judge judy. >> reporter: online, some wrote scathing messages like huma weiner came off as a culpable fool. in the past, abedin admitted to seeking relationship advice from longtime friend and former boss, hillary clinton. >> i look up to her the way i look up to my mom. i get advice from her. she's constantly a support system to me. >> reporter: she appears to have taken a page out of hillary's book. >> we love this city. no one will work harder to make it better than anthony. >> reporter: but right now she is working hard for him. despite the new embarrassing revelations. abc news has learned some of abedin's friends are now telling her they're shocked she is digging in. this is no longer a good idea. she was not present at weiner's campaign event on wednesday night. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> wow. >> you know, your friends say a lot about you. to hear that huma abedin's friends are now saying they're surprised that this has been her reaction, i think it means that there were probably conversations at some point between her and her friends -- >> that she implied she might go another way? >> right. i am ready to draw a line in the sand somewhere. this might have been the line that she had implied. and now the fact that she is still staying, her friends are, like, that doesn't make sense. that's not what we had discussed. >> let's have a moment about the name he used, carlos danger. he's getting a lot of rolled eyes for this one. at a debate in the bronx, latino mayoral candidate said the use of carlos you are good and ready, and then we'll jump in. moving on to a developing story, this one from spain. the death toll is expected to rise following the derailment of a high-speed train. rescue crews worked frantically to free passengers trapped in that wreckage. at least 40 bodies covered in blankets lay next to the tracks. the crash happened an hour before sunset after the train emerged from a tunnel and derailed on a curve sending cars off the tracks. in maryland, federal transportation authorities are going to take a look at last friday's dramatic crash on the chesapeake bay bridge. a 22-year-old woman's car was struck from behind by a big rig it then went over the bridge's railing and into the water. the woman was able to escape from her sinking car and was eventually rescued. federal investigators will look into whether any nationwide safety issues played a role in that crash. crews working to control the out-of-control fire on a natural gas rig say they won't get anywhere until engineers can drill relief to stop the leak. good news is that work could begin as early as today near the partially collapsed rig off the coast of louisiana. abc's ryan owens has the latest. >> reporter: the fireball is consuming this massive metal rig in the gulf of mexico. its platform melting away as natural gas spews from the well. 44 workers used life capsules like these to safely evacuate the rig owned by houston-based hercules offshore. after a blowout at the well sent gas pouring into the water and formed an explosive cloud around the rig that finally ignited. this well is about 55 miles off the coast of south louisiana. in the same general area of the gulf as the deepwater horizon spill three years ago. that disaster killed 11 people and gushed millions of barrels of oil into the water over an astounding 87 days. experts say while this burning rig may bring back bad memories it will not bring that sort of devastation. >> we've just got to realize, this natural gas, it's burning off completely. >> reporter: it could burn just like this for months. ryan owens, abc news, dallas. now to a bizarre flight delay in north carolina. a planeload of people grounded by a swarm of bees. a us airways flight from charlotte to indianapolis took off three hours late because the bees had surrounded a tug vehicle used to push the plane back from the gate. there were so many of these bees on the tug that the driver couldn't get anywhere near it. >> the fire department came. and medics and all that. >> looking out the window just a million bugs. i don't know how to describe it. >> at some point they called in a beekeeper. when he finally arrived, it got cleared up right away. but that was, like, two hours. >> reporter: so after the two hours, the beekeeper, you heard the man say, managed to round up the bees. none were able to get inside the cabin. luckily no one was hurt in the incident. nsa leaker edward snowden remains a man without a country. he awaits asylum in russia. lawyers working with snowden say the issue has not been resolved. earlier reports indicated snowden may be able to leave the moscow airport soon, but that turned out not to be the case. the u.s. wants him returned here. >> he is not a human rights activist. he is somebody who has been accused of leaking classified information. and that russia still has the ability to do the right thing and facilitate his return. >> on capitol hill efforts to restrict the nsa collection of hundreds of millions of americans' phone records failed yesterday in the house. president obama has nominated caroline kennedy to be the next u.s. ambassador to japan. the daughter of president kennedy is a lawyer and best-selling author, and she's being rewarded for the 2008 endorsement that helped put the president in the white house. kennedy has no expertise in japan. but her family ties and close relationship with the president are seen as a major asset. the royal waiting game is finally over. we now know what to call the world's most famous baby. the duke and duchess of cambridge have named their firstborn george alexander louis. abc's nick schifrin tells us what's in a name. >> girls, right? >> maybe he did the right thing. moving on to some serious news. beginning with the murder case involving aaron hernandez, new documents relating to the case could be released as early as this afternoon. >> and meanwhile, hernandez remains in custody following a brief court appearance. abc's brandi hitt has the details on this. >> reporter: former new england patriot aaron hernandez stood emotionless as prosecutors in massachusetts asked to delay his probable cause hearing because a grand jury is still considering evidence pulled from hernandez's apartment. >> what they found was boxes of ammunition consistent with the caliber that was recovered at the homicide scene. >> reporter: the 23-year-old is accused of murdering semi-pro player odin lloyd in an industrial park last month. court documents reveal one of his two alleged accomplices told police hernandez admitted to shooting mr. lloyd. >> having someone in your organization that's involved in a murder investigation is a terrible thing. >> reporter: patriots' coach bill belichick spoke to reporters for the first time since the arrest and said he is primarily responsible for recruiting players. >> we stress high character, and we stress making good decisions. we'll continue to do this, and we'll work to do a better job of it. >> reporter: law enforcement officials tell abc news investigators are focusing on whether lloyd was killed because of information he might have had about a double homicide last year. hernandez is being investigated in connection with that drive-by shooting outside a boston nightclub. >> well, that's a pretty strong motive. they've just got to be able to prove it. >> reporter: aaron hernandez who has pleaded not guilty is held without bail with his next court appearance in august. brandi hitt abc news. los angeles. a cleveland woman has been convicted of killing her fiance by poisoning his raspberry iced tea with antifreeze. holly mcfeature could face life in prison following this conviction. prosecutors say mcfeature want to end the relationship with her fiance who is the father of her two children. the defense tried to claim he drank antifreeze to commit suicide. the father of trayvon martin is on a mission, vowing to keep trayv trayvon's name in a positive way and not dragged through the mud as he says it was during the george zimmerman trial. as for zimmerman, his first post verdict foray into the public eye is raising some questions now. here is abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: they were the words of a father channeling anguish into action on capitol hill. >> i vow to do everything in my power not to give up the fight for him, not only to fight for trayvon but to fight for so many other young, black and brown boys of this country. >> reporter: after george zimmerman was acquitted of murdering 17-year-old trayvon martin, his father, tracy martin, made the opening remarks at the first-ever meeting of the congressional caucus on black men and boys. martin, a truck driver by profession, has appeared in multiple interviews and public appearances since the july 13th verdict. george zimmerman had all but disappeared until last week when police say he happened upon an suv that rolled over and helped the family of four escape the vehicle. witnesses called 911. >> there was tons of smoke and other people are starting to rush toward the vehicle. >> zimmerman's lawyer acknowledged the incident was awfully coincidental and invited the family to tell its side of the story. but fearful of retribution, the family backed out. >> they're fighting. they're worried. literally trembling voices. >> did they change their phone number? not answering the phone? asked for police at their house? >> they have done all that. >> reporter: one man trying to keep the spotlight on his son. the other in hiding. matt gutman, abc news. orlando. in spain a train crash killed dozens of passengers. that toll is expected to rise. rescuers were working to free people trapped inside the derailed cars. the train was packed with christian pilgrims traveling to a religious festival in the northwestern part of the country. a rookie member of the tennessee titans is being hailed for helping rescue a family from a burning vehicle. linebacker jonathan willard was driving off to training camp and saw smoke from an suv. when the driver pulled over, willard and a witness helped a woman, three kids and a dog get out. moments later that suv exploded. >> at the time it wasn't scary like -- i guess i just figured that i had to do it. but afterwards, i realized, you know, how dangerous and how scary it really was. >> willard stayed at the scene until firefighters arrived and extinguished the suv. he is an undrafted free agent trying to win a spot with the titans. >> he is officially my sentimental favorite to make the titans. wow! what a great guy. >> i think so, too. he said, i am not a hero, just at the right place at the right time. >> and he added, "i give the glory to god." total home run. >> come on, titans. just for that. >> no slouch. led the clemson team in tackles last year. so he's a good player. even though he's undrafted. >> he is. a player. there you go. come on, titans. >> rooting for you. a federal judge put a stop to lawsuits threatening detroit's bankruptcy and declared that he will handle any challenges. the decision is considered a victory for the city but a threat to the pension plans of thousand of retirees. the ruling does not mean the bankruptcy can move forward. the judge still has to weigh the facts. that could take three months. president obama applauding a possible compromise deal on student loans. the senate passed a bill which would repeal the doubling of interest rates that went into effect on july 1st. mr. obama is now urging the house to quickly approve the bill. well, here's another sign that real estate market is rebounding. the number of new homes sold just jumped to its highest level in five years. nearly a half million single family homes sold last month despite an increase in mortgage rates. the average sale price is also up about $17,000 over last year. analysts say the trend could provide an overall boost to the entire economy. forecasters say tropical storm dorian popped up in the eastern atlantic. dorian is centered off the coast of west africa, packing winds up to 50 miles an hour. and for now it's not threatening populated areas. but if it stays on its current westward course it could be just north of puerto rico by monday. >> here's what you can expect weatherwise closer to home. the big, blue section right here stretching from the great lakes southwest to arizona means wet weather. look for especially severe storms in parts of minnesota, wisconsin, nebraska and kansas. also, expect some showers along the gulf coast. >> it's cooling off in the northeastern quadrant finally with temperatures in the 70s, 80s and some 90s in the west. and sizzling triple digits across much of the south. an event that takes place every year at this time. thousands show up to watch. though, a sudden downpour threat to put a damper on things. >> talking about the annual pony swim off the coast of virginia. 130 ponies paddle from barrier island. an unexpected storm made the swim especially challenging, though it was probably a bigger problem for the human spectators than it was for the ponies. that's fascinating. >> yeah. the ponies love the water. are you kidding?
