serena with us live this morning. ♪ applause, applause, applause and lady gaga taking over times square for an unprecedented live concert event. he little ston sisters gathering to get a look at her. why she says she's not in kansas anymore. a big surprise ahead. you have never seen gaga like this. only on "gma." and what a way to begin the week. her beloved little monsters. lady gaga's devoted fans, excited for her live performance just ahead. she sent out this instagram shot overnight of her sleeping with her special shoes. created just for this morning. much excitement throughout the day. >> a lot of news to get to, as well. starting with the president's hard sell on syria. all in now to convince a skeptical congress and a war-weary public that a strike is necessary. but a brand-new poll out this morning shows what a battle that will be. nearly 6 in 10 americans oppose an attack. jon karl has the latest from the white house. that opposition despite the fact that 80% of americans believe assad gassed his own people. >> reporter: that gives you an indication, george, just how difficult it is for the president to convince congress they should vote for a military strike even as assad is out there once again denying that he used chemical weapons. as the president makes the case for using military force, syria's president is firing back. >> this war is against the interest of the united states. >> why? >> the war supports al qaeda. >> will the attacks be based in the middle east if there's an air strike? >> suspect anything. secretary of state john kerry shot back. >> so the evidence is powerful. and the question for all of us is, what are we going to do about it? >> reporter: the president is trying to make the hard sell to congress and the american people. late last night, a surprise visit to a dinner republican senators were having with the vice president. later today, he'll sit down for six national television interviews, hoping to convince the nearly 6 in 10 america whose oppose air strikes that it is in america's interest to respond to syria's use to chemical weapons. tomorrow, he will head to capitol hill, and later that night, he'll deliver a nationally televised primetime address. >> good evening. >> reporter: even hillary clinton is joining in the effort. she'll show her support in a previously scheduled speech at the white house today. >> congress, most americans oppose missile strikes in syria. >> reporter: the president's usual supporters are expressing doubts. the live ral group, /* moveon.org is running tv ads to convince the president not to go ahead with the strikes. absolutely none, george. the abc news vote count in the house is worse. we now count 231 members of the house saying they'll vote no or likely to vote no. that's more than enough to defeat this resolution. in the senate, it's much more closely divided. most senators still undecided. george, as you know, the first test vote will come in the senate on wednesday. >> and diane will be speaking to president obama tonight on "world news." let's get to the morning news from josh. >> we'll again with the deadly nfl sunday on the first season. witnesses say a man appeared to be intoxicated when he fell to the sidewalk below. meantime in indianapolis, two people there were hurt after the colts' game when a railing gave way, but we can tell you they are both okay. and there was this, bleachers collapsing at a university of maryland soccer game. thankfully no injuries reported here either. meanwhile, inspectors in connecticut are trying to determine why a popular carnival ride malfunctioned yesterday, slamming to a halt. many of the riders were thrown into each other in midair. the ride, a rotating swing called the zoomer was packed with children when witnesses say it jolted to a stop. >> i heard this crash of all this metal and all the seats clicking together. i looked to my left and i saw the swing ride had collapsed. >> reporter: as the ride lost power, it stopped turning. the riders on board kept moving. colliding into each other. >> people running in to try to get kids out. two kids on the floor. >> reporter: connecticut state police say 18 people were injured. almostal of them children. >> we won't allow our kids go on the rides again. 13 people taken to the hospital. only one admitted for treatment. the company that provided the ride blamed a mechanical malfunction. and said it would cooperate with an investigation. the company says state officials had just inspected that ride last friday. a wildfire near san francisco in the east bay of the zpraens area. it's forced people in 75 homes to flee. the fire around mt. diablo state park is only 10% contained at this hour. a battle over the future of the internet gets started today. oral arguments get under way as verizon challenges the fcc's push to keep internet pipelines open to everyone equally. some internet service providers want corporations to pay for faster access. an unwelcome visitor to a san diego block party. it is actually exactly as it appears, a panda-shaped hot air balloon making an emergency landing, and as you can see, narrowly missing homes in the process. we may have seen the last flight of this panda-shaped hot air balloon. and finally, the folks in milton, west virginia, are apparently in very good hands. take a look at this. firefighters rushed to this house. there was a fire there. they were shocked to see they were not the first responders on the scene. both batman and captain america had come to the rescue, saving that young little guy. the two men were in costume for an event at a nearby american legion post mentoring a group of children. they saw. they respond. they were heroes. literal and figurative. >> imagine the sighs of those kids when they showed up? >> no, i can't. parents have a lot of 'splaining to do. now we move on. to a chilling confession that has gone viral. powerful words from a young man admitting in an online video that he killed a man while driving drunk. he's expected to be charged this week. this morning, the victim's family is reacting. linsey davis has that story for us. >> reporter: initially, the man's face is blurred. his voice distorted. >> i ended up going the wrong way down a highway and struck a car and killed a man. >> reporter: then he reveals himself. >> my name is matthew cordle. on june 22, 2013, i hit and killed vincent canzani. >> reporter: in the 3 1/2 minute video, cordle explains what happened after a night of drinking with friends in ohio and pledges to take responsibility for the death of canzani. a 61-year-old photographer and navy vet. later today, he's expected to be charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. he confessed through the website called because i said i would.com. his video, which ends with him asking viewers not to drink and drive, has gotten more than 1 million views. >> he has an insurmountable amount of guilt. he doesn't want to cause other families the harm that he's done. >> reporter: the family of canzani is torn. his two estranged daughters say they believe cordal only recorded the message for publicity. canzani's ex-wife disagrees. >> if he wanted a lesser sentence, he could have lied. which many, many people do. he didn't choose to. he chose to tell the truth. >> reporter: meantime, his attorney says he hopes his message leads to change. >> he wants the spotlight to be on the issues about drinking and driving. >> i'm begging you. please don't drink and drive. >> reporter: just to be clear, cordle was already under investigation for the crash before he came forward. he's expected to be charged later today with aggravated vehicular homicide. a sentence that carries up to eight years in prison. regardless what you feel his motivation was, he does have a very good message to people to not drink and drive. now to the royal mistake at buckingham palace. anxiety high after an intruder got going through security. that created an uncomfortable moment for prince andrew. he was confronted by police and demanded his i.d. while out for an evening stroll. abc's bianna golodryga has all of the details. >> reporter: scotland yard is not commenting on what is now being called a security blunder of royal proportions. two armed police stopping prince andrew in the queen's garden. british tabloids report that officers ordered a livid duke of york to put hands up and get to the ground. >> you have to put a question mark over the security. the bliss will certainly be red-faced about it. >> reporter: in an apology to the queen's son, police say no weapons were drawn and no force was used. over the weekend, prince andrew said he accepted the apology. despite his good humor, it's not a laughing matter. >> they demand an explanation. and demands someone to say how could this happen in 2013? >> reporter: just days earlier, an intruder was stopped inside buckingham palace after scaling a 12-foot barbed wire wall. before being stopped, he kicked the door in where the area near where the queen's priceless coronation jewels are currently on display. the breach is especially troubling because the palace is supposed to have multiple layers of security. >> and they are there to ensure that both outer and inner cordons are enforced and reacted to. >> reporter: many are wondering if those defenses, at what is supposed to be one of the most secure buildings in the world, are really as secure as they should be. now, one note, this was the most serious palace breach in more than 30 years. in 1982, a man and climbed a drainpipe near the queen's bedroom. that may have been more serious. i think, more embarrassing. >> i can't believe the first one is possible. thank you, bianna. to medical news now. a study released overnight that finds women who do not get mammograms make up a significant portion of breast cancer deaths. this includes younger women who follow the current government guide lines which do not recommend routine testing before the age of 50. dr. richard besser is here with much more. let's dive into the study. what does it say? >> this fuels the controversy. the study out of harvard looked at women who died from breast cancer in the 1990s and died from breast cancer. 609 of those women. 71% had never had a screening mammogram. half of them were under 50. if those women had been screened earlier, it would have been detected earlier. and lives would have been saved. >> 2009, a group came out and said, wait until the age of 50. a big uproar about that. this is so confusing. to a lot of people, rich. >> i spoke to the woman that led that panel. she said, this is not going to change anything. the question is, if you had screened those women younger, would it have saved their lives? young women tend to have more aggressive breast cancer. would the early screening have changed the outcome for them? how many women do you have to screen to save one life? >> what is the downside to screening early? >> well, the concern is early, early screening, you're going to detect a lot of tumors that would have caused no problem. put women through the treatment and biopsies they didn't need. the feeling is it's a personal decision that should be covered by insurance. >> what is your recommendation? >> if you're under 50, check your family history, check and make sure it's covered and decide which way you want to go. >> i was 46 when i was diagnosed with an aggressive form. glad i didn't wait until i was 50. all right, rich. thank you. >> us, too. thank you, robin. pope francis doing so much to show he's a simple man of the people from carrying his own bags to paying his own bills. now he's taken to picking up the phone and calling people out of the blue. dan harris has the story. >> reporter: they're calling him the cold call pope. francis' dialing habit apparently started after he got his new job last spring. he personally called to cancel his newspaper subscription in his home down in argentina. he called the cobbler to say someone else would pick up his shoes. the latest, to anna romano, a 35-year-old who wrote the pope a desperate letter. saying she was pregnant and learned her boyfriend was married with children. i recognized his voice right away, she said in an interview with an italian tv station. he said i was strong and brave to keep my baby. this is one of a dozen spontaneous calls he's made. including to a woman who said she feared retaliation after reporting being raped by a policeman, to a man angry with god after his brother had been worried. and another young man worried about finding a job after he graduated. >> compassion is suffering with somebody else. the pope picking up the phone, that's his way of saying let me be there with you. >> reporter: the chattiness appears to be part of a larger effort to be a different kind of pope. he took a selfie. with visiting tourists. he doesn't live in the palace. instead, a simple room. as for the pregnant anna, when she said she fears no priest would baptize an illegitimate baby, the pope reportedly said, you know, there's always me. >> you never know who is calling. >> reporter: for "good morning america," dan harris, abc news, new york. >> all right, dan. what a night at the u.s. open. here is the winning moment on the court for serena williams. >> and serena continues her reign here in new york. >> yes, serena, defending her crown. a hard-fought match against victoria azarenka. winning in three sets. her fifth championship overall at the u.s. open. pure jubilation as you can see. 17th grand slam title. can we please welcome, the proper welcome for u.s. open champion serena williams, live here in the studio. >> thank you, thank you. it feels -- >> wow. >> 2:45. >> it was a long match. right? her little monsters are so well behaved every time they're here. we enjoy that. we're going to turn all that energy to the shocking murder mystery. one high school girl's confession about her best friend. why two teens are being charged. and a medical marvel for you. a tv anchor who fought back from death after a life-threatening illness. the one thing he says kept him fighting to stay alive. >> an amazing story. then, also, the youngest miss america ever crowned is now speaking out this morning about her surprising battle with depression. >> a whole lot coming up. we begin with the disturbing murder case out of west virginia. two 16-year-olds have been arrested for stabbing a third friend to death. one girl has confessed. the other will be tried as an adult. paula faris brings us the story. >> reporter: they were supposed to be best friends for life. sheila eddy, rachel shoaf, and skylar neese. but last summer, one of those bff's lives was cut tragically short. skylar was stabbed and left for dead. >> the only thing i care about is they get what's coming to them. >> reporter: july 2011, 16-year-old skylar, a student at university high school in west virginia, went missing. surveillance footage shows her sneaking out of her family's home in the dead of night. after months of searching, no sign of the teen. a stunning turn in the case. close friend rachel shoaf comes forward, providing the location of skylar's dead body. the one-time best friend admits to maliciously and intentionally causing the death of skylar neese by stabbing her and causing fatal injuries. but the story doesn't end there. one best friend admitted to murder. the other, sheila eddy, comforted the family. she tweeted, rest easy, skylar. you'll always be my best friend. i miss you more than you could ever know. but according to prosecutor, that tweet was just a smoke screen. this week, she, too, will be charged with skylar's murder. >> if you're innocent, you don't cover up something for nine month. you don't come to somebody's house the next day after you murder somebody and try to walk up and down the street looking for the person you murdered. >> reporter: shiela eddy has not yet entered a plea and her lawyers have issued a statement saying it's premature to comment on this case at this time. now, skylar neese's family is asking how this ended in murder. for "good morning america," paula faris, abc news, new york. >> let's get more on this from chief legal affairs anchor dan abrams. the details mind-boggling. she's pretending to be part of the search for months? >> it's an awful story. starting with the fact that you've got two friends accused of stabbing, literally, taking her out somewhere. picking her up in the car, going out somewhere and stabbing her. >> couldn't be more premeditated. >> no. one pleading guilty of second-degree murder. not first-degree murder. this is where age comes into play. is it adult versus juvenile? in the state of west virginia, when you're talking about murder anyone over the age of 14 is supposed to automatically get transferred to adult court. the leniency is to come with the sentence. prosecutors are going the recommend 20 years. >> isn't that light? >> considering the crime, yeah. i think that's because of the age, likely the fact that she's pleading guilty, as well. it will be interesting to see what happens with the second one. she was adjudicated so far in juvenile court. that's now been transferred to adult court. the question now is going to be does she plead guilty? does she go to trial and have her friend testify against her? you have heard the parents say again and again that the last thing they want to do is revisit every detail of their daughter -- you can imagine this, right? the last thing they want is to have to relive this. i think the parents would appreciate some sort of plea here. we'll see if that happens. >> thank you, dan. now to the stunning alligator hunt in mississippi. the annual event coming to an end today. and another record was set this weekend. this massive gator tips the scales at 741.5 pounds. abc's gio benitez went into the waters of the mississippi with some of the now former record-holders. >> reporter: it looks like something out of "jurassic park." this 723-pound, 13-foot alligator, was caught in the swamps of mississippi by an every day family. led by one tough mom. a paralegal by day. alligator hunter by night. >> the alligator queen. >> reporter: they wrangled this massive beast during mississippi's ten-day alligator hunt. 920 people chosen to catch two gators each. the state says to help control the population. gators were once endangered. now, biologist ricky flint, the hunt coordinator, says there are too many. for many people here, alligators are problems on their property? >> absolutely. goldfish ponds. swimming pools. highways. under the deck of a house. >> reporter: and this weekend, in the dead of night, i headed out with the family on their reptile-wrangling rig. some people wondering, why do you do this? [ cheers and applause ] >> in that freedom brings so much joy to so many. what made you decide to bring dorothy to life? in such an inventive way? >> it's an explanation in a way for my entire career so far. even with the "gma" performance and the transformations happening today, it's like my way of saying all of these outfits and wigs that i have been changing in over the years, this is my way of assimilating and surviving. this is my way of getting to oz. my way of getting to oz, to have all my dreams come true. whatever we had to do to get past the evil monkeys from the west and get past in the wicket witch, dorothy was able to transform in order to survive. by transforming into glinda and at the end back into the wizard, who was just dorothy herself, me. >> you express yourself so well and you help us understand. this is something this is personal. is it true you tried to get -- that in eighth grade, you were up for the part of dorothy and you didn't get it? >> well, it was kind of communist at my school. if you were in the eighth grade, you could only get a munchkin part. ninth grade, a little better part. all the seniors had the big roles. i was fine. i was one of the lollipop girls. >> so look at you now, baby. >> i haven't strayed too far, i guess. >> your folks said you performed eight songs off the album in london. a lot of artists are secretive. you're putting it out there before it happens in just a few weeks. in november. i want to ask you, and the fans want to know, "art pop" so different than "born this way." can you explain? >> every person in their lives goes through so many tint things. i was going through hard time in "born this way." i was insecure. i became a star quickly. i didn't have time to put my feet in the ground and have a sense of myself through it all. because it's like a machine. you just keep going. there's tvs and pictures, and lovely fan everywhere that i wanted to hug and sign autographs for. there was a lot of me putting things on to hide the sadness. the record reflected that. i'm feel something positive and healed in a lot of ways. i feel overjoyed and pull of love. i'm obsessed with making things colorful and happy. i think it's because i'm in a happy place. when i'm in a happy place, the music is. my fans, i have to thank them for that. because no matter what i go through and no matter how i evol evolve, they always stand by me. they appreciate my point of view. and, that's what "art pop" is about. i want them to appreciate their points of view. and when they're harnessing their talents, i want you to know that they're important. and just because you want to be an artist and maybe not a doctor or a nurse or teacher, it doesn't mean that it's less than that. it doesn't mean that you still can't survive. in fact in the economy that we live in, it's actually wonderful to have a niche business that has specialized things to offer. it's much more lucrative in the future. please. express your talents. show who you are. >> mama has spoken. she has spoken.
