100 structures are threatened and those homes have been evacuated. we have live team coverage starting with terry mcsweeney live on the fire lines for you. reporter: one minute the flames were up the mountain, then came strong gusts of wind and suddenly they were all the way down to morgan territory road. morgan territory road is a fire break. it has to be held. firefighters scrambled to stop the flames. kevin lewis lives on that road and was not waiting for the order. we are on our way up. last night i was up watching the spurs and stuff keeping an eye on it seeing where it was going to go. i saw this flare up and told the family that we re going out. if the house burns down, whatever. reporter: 700 five-day forecasts are battling the morgan fire and dozens of them quickly set up posts trying to contain it. thousands of acres have burned and hundreds more went up tonight. we are expecting we will be losing about 6 to 8,000 acres. reporter: at the clayton fire ....
the ground and from the air. reporter: by nightfall with over 800 acres burned, it is still hard to tell who is winning this firefight, man or mother nature. the fire started right here with, you know, a lot of fuel, a lot of potential for rapid spread because of slope. reporter: monday afternoon mount diablo erupted in flames looking more like a volcano with a huge plume of smoke in the air and 50 to 75 homes on the ground in the fire s path starting on sunday afternoon those residents told to lock unand leave immediately. especially on morgan territory road they have a long way to go for fire protection and they have a lot of animals in here, you can see there s a lot of fuel for the fires. so, yeah, it s a big concern. reporter: on the attack, 250 firefighters, dozens of fire trucks, a handful of aircraft, even a couple of bulldozers to do the heavy lifting. temperatures were very high and the fuel and topography on the back side of mount diablo is fairly ....
