Of the fire are starting to get a handle on however we encourage anyone who feels threatened or has any questions to go ahead and prepare and get out of the area. Mike wilson, cal fire division. Napa unit, we appreciate you coming on. All right. The chiefthere. We to want look live at the fire. Tracking the condition for the firefighters. Spencer. Its cool in the area of the fire. And relative humidity is high. 69 degrees there right now. 63 humidity, and the winds are reported from the nearest reporting station which is downtown napa. As out of the south, southeast at four miles per hour. Now, further south of the fire, the winds are stronger down there in napa airport. Thats several miles south of the fire. Closest reading we could get on the wind conditions right now says about four miles per hour. No gusts of being indicated right now, of course, that can change late in the evening. We often get shifts in the winds, but as you can see, the smoke seems to be rising almost directly without bending or seeming to be blown by any sort of strong winds. Thats encouraging. Those conditions are favorable for containing the fire. You see flames close to those homes or that building right there on the ridge. They are close. I know that area well just west. There are several wineries in the area that has been pointed out, and there are homes as well. Its not a densely populated area, there are homes there. Look at the size of the flames. Pretty significant. Its really grown in just the last couple of moments. Really leaping 20, 30, 40 feet in the air. The car, suv that was moving toward that road on the backside of the home is now backing up that looks as though its a firefighter, maybe theyre checking tout see how close the flames are coming up the backside of the hill. The fire engines there at the top. And obviously theyre going to take a stand if that flame gets too close to some of those homes. May try to defend this particular building right now. Its a scarylooking fire. The flames are just roaring up there, spencer. Its not too windy which is good news. And its not too hot is it, spencer . Its not hot at all, its not warm, its 69 degrees. That was the reading about two minutes to 6 00. So its probably a degree or so cooler than that right now. General in the area of course. And the relative humidity is 63 , which is pretty good. Its not dry there. So all the conditions are favorable for us as mike just said, theyre making pretty Good Progress here and the conditions are cooperating in that respect. They are indeed. All the weather conditions are favorable. If there is any shift in the wind or any increase, ill let you know. At the moment, were watching it very carefully. Theres no change. Of course september and october now, the most dangerous time of year for our fire season. This is really the worst of it. These two months. And the rain cannot come soon enough, spencer, for this. Itll come later this week. Today was beginning of a sharp change in the weather pattern. The heat of the weekend has passed. Its much cooler today and much less dry than it was over the weekend. Relative humidity is generally across the region on the increase. And later this week, well be getting some rain. So that should reduce the risk of future fires. Yeah, weve had far too many of these fires that are so devastating and the chief was saying hes got about 180 firefighters working this right now. We also saw, looked like either helicopter or a plane from up above, perhaps dropping some retardant and if you notice those flames have vanished. Not nearly as ferocious as they were just moments ago. And you saw them moving those trucks in the position to the side of the road. It was creeping up towards those houses and they just jumped on this right away. Flames in the distance, through the smoke. But not leaping quite as high as they were just a couple of minutes ago. So maybe they are making some progress. Look at all of the smoke, just choking smoke coming off of this fire. In napa county. Just to orient you again. And the fire chief, mike wilson was saying this is about 30 to 40 acres. That number can change, but there are a number of firefighters and theyre in full gear, turnout gear there. And it looks like theyre getting ready to do something. Its hard to tell from this perspective. And the homeowners, perhaps at work dr. Or maybe evacuated. Evacuated. The chief was saying, okay, we have water droplets coming up right now. Lets watch this live. Seize where they choose to put this. And what we had seen was the flames coming up right to the edge of the road. And they dont the president to cross the road, you can see all the dry trees in the background and the home and the fence there. The great precision there as the pilot dropped the water right on the edge of that fire, but it always looks from a distance, a little futile, doesnt it . Relatively small amount of water dropped on the small fire. It is effective, but it looks like a proverbial drop in the bucket. You can see, new information, you just saw plane flying through that. And those are usually planes that drop retardant. They are trying very, very hard to get a jump on this. And they have to move quickly because night fall, spencer, is what about 7 00, and a little bit better that. Right. Sunset is about 6 38, 6 49 another half hour. Yeah. Its not safe to do those drops after dark. Well, it looks like its a steep cliff on the tlej. The homes are built on what appears to be a mountains. Mountaintop area. And so thats always a little risky because it becomes dark and when night falls. And theyre still trying to fight this on the edge there, its risky not only because of the flames and the smoke, but the terrain as well. Uhhuh. So thats just off what they call the napa valley floor. Okay. At least two aircraft helicopters and a fixed wing. This is 30 to 40 acres. And broke out late in the day today. Heres an Evacuation Center at Crosswalk Community church in napa for anyone looking for a place to go. Crosswalk Community Church in napa. Is the where conditions are extremely favorable. The humidity is high. The wind srpz not significant. So thats good news. We can see from a distance. Our helicopter is very high in the air. We dont to want endanger our crew. We saw another helicopter going through. Spencer pointed out, its not that windy. Has that changed . Ive just looked at the latest reading. Indicating that the wind generally in that area has gone down to three miles per hour. It does appear that smoke is being blown more strongly than before. You know how in these microclimates that are created by the fires sometimes. They create their own drafts and can be strong aeroshort distance away. The relative humidity has gone up to 65 . 68 degrees. And the latest official reading is south at three miles per hour. Lets go to the phone now. Wine tour driver in the area who knows the terrain well is teen is there. Aye been here for an hour watching it. And i came out on highly and came over in the parking lot at mums. And its completely changed from when it started. The wind, it was blowing north when it first started. And its changed now, its blowing south and going kind of straight up. But its huge now. It looks enormous. Flames are coming up over the hill. We were wondering about the terrain. Are there wineries or homes. Its really strange. Its right on the other side. And then behind that theres much higher hills. That was much closer to now. To this side. How many houses . Tell us about the kind of buildings in the area. Oh, i wouldnt begin to know. I havent gone to any private homes. And theyre always tiny little driveways that lead up to them. And winery wise, across from mums here, were let me see. North, uhhuh. So what can you see, christine, where you are right now . Its huge, but can you describe that to you . Well theres flames coming up over the hill. Behind it and lots of flames. And how about the responses, planes and helicopters. Do you see the ground areas there . Only three. All over. We certainly hope that it doesnt carry small particles of flame. Thatll make it get even worse. Christine, thanks a lot. Be careful, dont get too close. We appreciate it. Thank you for your time, christine, appreciate it. Well stay on top of this breaking news.
