foundation of a nearby building. it's about a mile from a sinkhole that swallowed a man back in 2013. encouraging news in the search for the black box from the ship el faro. sonar indicates the wreckage believed to be the ship landed upright on the ocean floor. the wreckage found over the 15,000 feet deep. the recovery of the black box could take up to two weeks. 33 crew members died when the el faro went down in stormy seas during hurricane joaquin early last month. we're learning this morning the russian jetliner that crashed after taking off from sharm el sheikh broke apart mid-air killing all 224 people on board as investigators scoured the debris field strepping across eight square miles, mourners gathered in russia to remember the victims even though a group linked to al jet breaking apart high in the sky killing everybody on board. >> there's an outpouring of grief in the russian city of st. petersburg. many of the bodies have already been recovered and some have investigators on the scene inspected the wreckage. the plane split in two. a russian aviation official said the airbus 321 broke up in mid-air. but why? there are few answers. the metro jet flight took off just before 6:00 a.m. on saturday from the popular resort town of sharm el sheikhing from st. petersburg. families posting final pictures before they took off, including this father and daughter as they boarded the plane. it climbed steadily to 31,000 feet before it started to quickly lose altitude and 23 minutes after takeoff, it disappeared from radar. >> looking at the tail section sitting alone in the desert is very telling. if that came off first, the question is was it a bomb or was it structural failure. >> reporter: the isis-linked group in the sinai quickly claimed responsibility but intelligence officials say they don't have the missiles that could take out a plane that high. egypt says nos distress call from the cockpit. but the ex-wife of the co-pilot told russian tv he had repeatedly complained about the technical state of the plane, including on the morning of the crash. russia declared a national day of mourning as families grapple with their devastating losses. you lose your kids, this grieving mother said, life is finished. those black boxes will now be taken back to moscow to try to unlock the mystery behind this crash. in the meantime, colorado springs last night to remember the victims of an apparent random shooting spree. witnesses say a man armed with a rifle marched down the street on halloween morning and shot three people. he was killed in a gun battle with police. investigators are looking for a motive. they say the suspected gunman wrote an angry blog post in the days before the attack. at least one person is dead on the campus of winston-salem state university in north carolina after a shooting. the school was celebrating homecoming saturday night when the two students were shot in a campus parking lot early sunday morning. the gunman is still at large. classes will be on a regular schedule today. the worlds of politics and tertainment are remembering former senator fred thompson. who died in nashville. the tennessee republican suffered a reoccurrence of lymphoma. thompson, a lawyer whose career hollywood served eight years in the senate and appeared in "law and order" and 20 motion pictures including "in the line of fire" and "the hunt for red october." he ran for president in 2007. former senator fred thompson was 73 years old. >> newly elected house speaker paul ryan says he will not work with president obama on immigration reform. ryan says mr. obama just cannot be trusted on the issue since he went around congress to protect millions living here illegally. that likely puts off any reform till at least 2017 when the president leaves office. the gop presidential candidates are demanding more control over the debates. reps from more than a dozen campaigns held a private meeting last night bypassing the republican national committee after last week's widely criticized cnbc debate. the presidential hopefuls agreed to several changes including mandatory opening and closing statements and an equal number of questions for each candidate. they may threaten to boycott if their depends are not met. now to baseball's big night. crowning a new world series champion. from the sky. >> as investigators comb through a large field of wreckage several major airlines say they will not fly over the sinai peninsula till we know exactly here's abc's alex marquardt. >> reporter: the debris field stretches over five miles from huge chunks of the plane to tiny pieces of metal, stray clothing scattered in between. >> why an airplane would come apart in perfectly good weather that's a sobering question. >> reporter: all 224 people on board killed, including 17 children. russian investigators have arrived in egypt saying it's to -- too soon to what triggered the crash, but the plane clearly broke up at a high altitude. the plane's black boxes include the flight data recorder have been recovered and will provide crucial answers. >> the probability is here with the line of fire" and "the hunt for red october." fred thompson was 73 years old. former congressman gus savage has died a day after celebrating his 90th birthday. substantially was also a journalist who founded citizen newspapers, the largest black-owned chain of community weekly newspapers in the midwest. >> he represented chicago's southside for 12 years but his record was marred by an ethics investigation sparked by allegations of sexual misconduct. the republican presidential candidates are demanding more control over the debates. reps for more than a dozen campaigns held a private meeting last night following last week's widely criticized cnbc debate. the presidential hopefuls agreed to several changes including mandatory opening and closing statements and an equal number of flood disaster to six. another round of violent storms over the weekend spawned tornadoes and flooding across the water-logged lone star state. some parts of houston got nearly a foot of rain since wednesday triggering more than 130 high water rescues. those storms also brought about nearly a dozen tornadoes causing widespread destruction across the gulf region from texas to mississippi, six of sank last month during a hurricane. sonar indicated the ship is sitting upright off the bahamas about 15,000 feet down. now they'll send down a remotely operated vehicle to confirm that it is the el faro. after that, the search for the black box will begin in earnest. overwhelming grief in the bronx after a deadly halloween car crash. a driver plowed into a group of trick-or-treaters killing three people including a 10-year-old girl and her grandfather. four others were also injured. investigators are looking into whether a medical condition was to blame. a vigil held in colorado springs for the three victims of an apparent random shooting on halloween. police say the suspected gunman had written an angry blog post in the days before the attack. he was killed in the shoot-out with police. kayna whitworth is in colorado springs. >> reporter: residents in colorado springs on edge. after three people were gunned down by a man they say was living in their normally quiet neighborhood. >> shots fired. positive shooting in progress. >> reporter: early saturday morning, routines brought to a deadly halt. was found. naomi says she was just feet from the shooter and saw it happen. >> he looked right at me. i was like okay, i started walking away. i said, oh, please, don't shoot me. >> reporter: 21-year-old matt woke up when he heard gunshots, called police and then followed the gunman. >> i looked to my left. a lady looked like she was smoking a cigarette. she was shot in the chest. looked down to my right, there was another lady that was shot in the jaw. >> reporter: police caught up with the suspected shooter in this wendy's parking lot. in a barrage of bullets, police say the suspect was killed. meanwhile, bystanders diving for safety to the ground. >> i got on to my stomach in the median and they started shooting at each other and the bullets went over me. >> reporter: police are still ing investigating a motive and haven't released the names. kayna whitworth, abc news, colorado springs. to mexico. church officials say the pontiff will visit in february. he's expected to address the violence plaguing mexico but that's a theme that he touched on during his visit to the united states in september. the pontiff is from argentina. this will be his fourth trip to the americas since he became pope. and history is made in the u.s. episcopal church. presiding bishop michael curry was installed as the first african-american leader of that church. he's urging everyone in the faith to evangelize but crossing divides of education, race and wealth. curry succeeds the first woman to lead that church. i'm not saying everything i learned i learned in kindergarten. it may not be true when it comes to preschoolers and technology. new research finds 97% of children studied use mobile devices. most of them before they turn 1. most 3 and 4-year-olds use devices without help and one-third engaged in media multitasking. yes, a kid with more than one screen and he's not even 5. about a quarter of the parents used a mobile device to help their children fall asleep. i have never done that but i have used mobile devices for my young parts of the waterlogged state. some parts of the houston area got nearly a foot of rain since friday ensgufl auto -- engulfing homes, sweeping away cars, and triggering more than 130 high water rescues. those powerful storms also spawned tornadoes, nearly a dozen of them, causing widespread destruction across the region. from texas to mississippi, six of those twisters hit south and east of growing since first opening on friday. the hole is more than 27 feet deep and 22 feet wide. it's moving closer to the foundation of a nearby building. it's about a mile from a sinkhole that swallowed a man back in 2013. encouraging news in the search for the black box from the cargo ship "el faro." sonar indicates the wreckage believed to be the ship landed upright on the ocean floor. the wreckage found over the weekend 15,000 feet deep. the recovery of the black box could take up to two weeks. 33 crew members died when the "el faro" went down in stormy seas during hurricane joaquin early last month. so we're learning this morning the russian jetliner that crashed after taking off from sharm el sheikh broke apart mid-air killing all 224 people on board. as investigators scoured the debris field spread across eight square miles, mourners gathered in russia to remember the victims even though a group linked to al qaeda is taking responsibility. officials say it could take months to find out what really happened. >> a russian commercial aviation has just about the worst safety record in the world. >> the probability is here with an in-flight breakup that something caused that on the order of a bomb or incendiary explosion of some sort on the plane. >> the two black boxes have been found. nearly 200 bodies have been recovered. and they're being flown to russia. we are learning more about the suspect who shot and killed three people in colorado springs on halloween. police say in a blog posted days before the shooting, noah rallied against his father, a recovering alcoholic,
