"commentator screaming: "uni has done it. north carolina loses!" this is the eighth time in school history that u-n-i has beat a number-1 ranked team. one the edge of growing poll numbers, florida senator marco rubio is campaigning hard to win the affections of iowa voters. rubio criss-crossed his way around eastern iowa yesterday afternoon. one of his campaign stops was the hotel at kirkwood in cedar rapids. over the last 30 days, rubio has moved up to double- digits in republican state polls, for the upcoming iowa caucuses. he has anywhere from 10% percent up to 18% support. in front of a crowd of about 200, rubio offered familiar talking points, including the nation's debt ceiling. " the cause of our debt crisis in the long term is the way social security and medicare are structured for future generations. we just don't have enough people paying in anymore. because we didn't have as many children, whatever it may be. these programs were designed when there were 16 workers for every retiree. we are down to 3 to 1. soon, it will be 2." ubio isn't the only presidential candidate in eastern iowa. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton is city of "clinton". she's holding a town hall there called "fighting for us". watch kcrg-tv-9 this evening at 5-30 and 10 for coverage of that event. people living in swisher have mixed feelings, after the city's mayor said he will accept syrian refugees. that goes against an order from governor terry branstad to not accept them last week.. this comes as dozens of u-s governors, including iowa governor branstad, said they're working to stop refugees from resettling in their states. swisher mayor christopher taylor issued a proclamation on wednesday, saying his city will welcome all people, regardless of origin or refugee status. one city council member said the community response to the proclamation has been mostly positive. just last week the u-s house passed a bill to step up screenings for syrian and iraqi refugees coming to the u-s. 47 democrats joined 242 republicans in a majority vote of 289 to 137. as the bill moves to the senate, a majority vote could override president obama's promised veto. president obama's administration is trying to urge governors that syrian refugees go through a rigorous security vetting process. secretary of s sate ohn kerry and homeland secretary jeh johnson have sent letters to governors of each state. those letters outline the vetting process. president obama is overseas, but he's been keeping an eye on the issue. " we will not give into fear or start turning on each other or start treating people differently because of religion or race or background. that wouldn't just be a betrayal of our values, it would also feed isil's propaganda, " the obama administration says the vetting process is thorough and can take up to three years. the largest water utility in central iowa is once agagin working to lower nitrate levels in drinking water. nitrate removal facility, for the 149th time in 2015. the utility draws water from the both the des moines and raccoon rivers, both of which had nitrate levels above the e- p-a limits this year. des moines water works is suing buena vista, calhoun and sac counties, claiming farm drainage in those counties caused the spike in nitrate levels. as of july, the utility had already spent more than $1.5 million dollars on lowering nitrate levels for the year. iowa drivers should have a little more money in their pockets for holiday spending this year. that's because prices are under 2 dollars a gallon in many locations across the state. the s moines register reports the price of gas in iowa is down about 70 cents a gallon from this time last year. tv-9 also saw gas prices under two dollars on the west side of cedar rapids. thanksgiving is this thursday, but this didn't stop many people showing up for a big feast at the central church of christ yesterday, the cedar rapids church welcomed in more than 60 people for a free meal. church members delivered boxes of food to homes of people who couldn't make it to the event. they told us they were surprised with the high turnout despite the snow.
