Researchers found that higher intake of sugar sweetened beverages defined as colas and other carbonated beverages, along with fruit drinks like lemonade and fruit punch was associated with increased insulin resistance, a risk factor for type two diabetes. People who drank a median of six 12ounce drinks a week had insulinresistance scores roughly eightpercent higher than low or nonconsumers. This study adds to a significant body of research that has linked sugary drinks with an increased diabetes risk. There is a record breaking crop coming out of iowas fields and that requires a lot of storage. What local bins are doing to accommodate the surplus, nex welcome to the agribusiness david geiger. There is a record breaking crop coming off the fields. And that means. There has to be a lot of storage. In marion county. Harvest started off in the last week of september. Now theres just a bit of beans and less than 10 are full. Its been a real challenge for the industry to get everything put away. From what ive heard from across the state, i think everybodys worked hard to try and get that done and maybe have done some things that you wouldnt consider normal. Tracy gathman says corn has been off the thats after a great year. Last year. And wed never probably see that again. And to be honest with you, this years been as good if not better than last year. At the two rivers coop in tracy iowa. Gathman says its been a struggle navigating storage. Were over full, we got about 600,000 bushel of corn on the ground at our otly location. We got about 800,000 bushel of grain that weve moved to off site moving it right into the grain flow, in the cargill eddyvi lle in order to finish up making room. And try to get this crop put away. Putting crop on the ground is not optimal. Corn has the potential to warm up in the middle of the pile. The moisture and heat causes the grain to rot. We prefer not to put any on the ground if we can help able to take the crop. And with this crop it called for a few dramatic measures. The quarterly grains stocks report had on farm storage up six percent. Thats another problem as farmers are swapping out old crop for new. Were seeing some bins that from what we can tell were probably full from last year, yet coming into this year. Because were seeing some people bring crop into town during harvest that weve not bins filling up at the tail end of harvest. Theyre looking to expand the number of bins they have. A new administration in january will cause reorganizing at the cabinet and subcabinet posts. While Congress Also reorganizes. That will impact the timing of the next farm bill. According to iowa senator chuck grassley. It takes months to get into office. Putting legislation on hold. Grassley says that would mean there wont be a farm bill in 2017. But he thinks working together. The agriculture committees should be formed quickly in a bipartisan way. Because farmers need an early bill. If the price of corn was near the cost of production, i wouldnt be saying this but i think we need to do a 2017 farm bill instead of a 2018 farm bill and preserve crop insurance. And stop the Environmental Protection agencys waters of the us rule. Which is on hold in us courts. And thats all the time i have for the show today. Thanks for tuning in. Some veterans struggle after leaving the military and too many end up homeless. In ease action program, or hacap, has a mission to help Homeless Veterans with a different approach. Kcrgtv9s bruce aune explains Operation Home. We send our military men and women off to fight in foreign lands, hoping theyll come home with tales of the opposite. After some complications from an ied attack that we had, i was progressively spiraling down. Derek wittenbergs Second Military enlistment included a tour in afghanistan. And his return to civilian life two years ago was not what he planned. Its kind of hard to relate to that. It wasnt like it was before. I wasnt the same person. This time, he was homeless. The for henry frank. He served in the army more than 30 years ago. When i went in i did my tour at ft. Stuart, georgia. I stayed there pretty much the whole time, even though we did desert training; cold weather training. Frank never saw combat, but his life changed dramatically problems left him with no home, no money, and no prospects. You show obvious signs of being homeless, its very difficult to get a job. Hacap says 40 per cent of iowas homeless are veterans and their families. Thats a startling statistic that hacaps Operation Home strives to eliminate. The whole sole purpose of the program is to end veteran homelessness. So we prioritize helping veterans who are bridges, sleeping on benches, and we find a lot of folks sleeping in their car many are even harder to locate. Were sleeping on our friends couch. Were sleeping in a garage. Some of us that are in close groups go on what we call camping trips. and theyre just going from place to place to place. And its hard to track them. And its not always easy to convince Homeless Veterans that help is available. Sometime your pride gets in the way, especially if youve never asked for help before. Thatd be the thing. Youve worked all ur life, and youve done things, then all of a suddeyhav the street and resistant to any type of services, our case workers and our outreach workers go back, and they go back, and they go back and begin to form a relationship with that person. And theyre no l problems than can include substance abuse, money management, mental issues, and much more. Dealing with those is important, but Operation Homes priority is housing. 0; operate under the house first, and then we wrap the services around them. And this federally funded program is working, serving about 200 Homeless Veterans in eastern iowa each year. A year later about 80 per cent of the folks that we serve are still in permanent housing, which is really a great number, and, i think, a testament that this approach does work. I really cant thank them enough, because i never really had to go through this before. High 47 low 31 the world has lost another Leonard Cohen has died at age 82. He released his fourteenth and final album just weeks ago. It foreshadowe d his death. Heres a look at Leonard Cohens legacy. If there is one song. Leonard cohen, the songwriter of hallelujah, suzanne and bird on a wire, has died at age 82. Cohens management said in a statement thursday that he has passed away, and a memorial will take place in los on his death were given. Cohen, also renowned as a poet, novelist and aspiring zen monk, blended folk music with a darker, sexual edge that won him fans around the world and among fellow musicians like bob dylan and r. E. M. He remained wildly popular into his 80s, touring as recently as earlier this year and releasing a new album just last month. His hallelujah became a cult hit when it was covered by musician jeff buckley in 1994, and has become a modern standard since. Leonard cohen dead at age 82 fitness goals fail when the goal our fitness expert will tell us how to set goals that will keep you motivated in the weeks and months to come. Thats next on tv9. Thanks for staying with us. That are trying to achieve different goals in their fitness life is how do i stay motivated . I start off really, really strong and then something happens, life happens, right . And i tend to get off track. So my advice to you is to set, what we call, smart goals. What smart stands for is theyre specific, theyre measurable, theyre attainable, theyre relevant and theyre time driven. So lets the best when ive got something im working towards. For example, maybe im looking to participate in a 5k, or a half marathon, or a something of that nature thats an athletic event. Its a very specific thing that im looking to accomplish, say the 5k. Its a measurable situation. So ive got this number of weeks to prepare for whenever i need to achieve that specific goal. Its very, very attainable. I know i can do it if i know i can do it. A lot of times i use a mantra what the mind believes the body can achieve. So if you know you have the skill set and youve drawn out the plan that is very specific and time driven, then you know you can attain that specific goal. Its relevant to you. We talked about r being relevant. If you dont want to run a 5k, dont sign up for a 5k. Nothing wrong with that. Maybe want to leave my house and i want to be able to walk around the block. Or maybe i want to be able to spend more time being active with my kids or my grandkids out at the park. That is appropriate as well. It just needs to be something that means something to you, if youre excited about it, then the work that you need to do to accomplish that goal doesnt seem like work at all. Thats what its all about. Lastly,it something thats a long term goal lets go back to the example i used, say the 5k or the half marathon. Thats not something thats going to be accomplished in 23 weeks, for me at least. So i need to be able to break that large goal into small little segments. So for example, maybe im going to partake in a program called couch to 5k. That is a specific Running Program that maybe not being a runner or not being a walker for activities and athletics and then taking you step by step by step to achieve that longterm goal. Last but not least, make them really relevant to yourself by putting them in writing. When you have something thats in front of you regularly, it becomes very relevant and very attainable and you wont forget to actually accomplish it. Thanks so much for staying with us. Develop your smart goals today, im feryl york, your midday. We are honoring nations veterans today.
