gh: alo: 48 dbq: 51 iow: 52 nh ear. areas of frostlikely. w3 alo: 32 dbq: 33 iow:5is midday, to get sandbags removed after last month's flooding. crews started picking up sandbags around 7:30 this morning. the city says workers were out on the northwe way south to collect all of the sandbags over the next 3 weeks. people should put sandbags in the public right-of-way along the front curb, on the street on lightly-traveled streets, or on any portion of a driveway. pickup was supposed to start on monday, but the contractor hired to do the work needed until today to prepare a contract for the job. several small businesses that recover after losing a week of sales. this morning, city leaders laid out a plan to give those businesses a boost. kcrg-tv9's brea love was at this morning's announcement. brea, what does the city plan to do to help? chris the city created a fund to help out those businesses. it's called the jobs and small business recovery fund. this is a partnership between the city, the greater cedar rapids community foundation, city council put 75 thousand dollars into the fund, and any impacted small business will be able to apply for a 5 thousand dollar grant. businesses interested in applying must be in the 28 foot evacuation area. they must have been in operation during the flood and have 50 or fewer employees. officials say 5 thousand might not cover it all, but a good start to support a business's recovery process. "that's not likely to cover all the costs businesses have incurred, but we think as the city manager said it's important in the hands of the people as quickly as possible." the city is also asking for the public's help with contributions to the fund. the information on that and the application process is currently on the city's website, you can also find it on the economic alliance's website. live in downtown cedar rapids, brea love, kcrg-tv nine news. cedar rapids has taken a first step in building city broke ground on the levee that will protect the newbo district from most flooding yesterday. that levee will stretch from south of the sinclair site to the african american museum of iowa. it will eliminate the need for many of the hesco barriers that helped protect the area from last month's flood. cedar rapids mayor ron corbett says this project is just the start.
