"37:13, "we have a glut of corn right now so corn prices are low. so to try to counter that more people have been growing popcorn so now popcorn prices are low" fitkin says it's important for people to understand the costs behind fresh food. and why prices can vary from year to year. some students in cedar rapids are learning how fruits a but not from a book. they go outdoors at least once a week for a unique classroom experience. and zach johnson helps the americans win the ryder cup this afternoon at hazeltine. the highlights from the big day, ahead in the natural elements. that's the goal behind new outdoor classroom at summit schools in cedar rapids. kcrg tv-9's jordee kalk has the story, as this week's show you care spotlight. using tree stumps as chairs. nat? and a new wooden atrium for presentations . 26:33 cam stroschine/2n d grader "sometimes when we have performances instead of going to the library we go out herethis classroom is one "open environment." nat 35:20, "what we're going to do is measure the growth of our green health and wellness teacher kim kuda spear- headed the campaign for this outdoor classroom. 8:27:20, kuda "we wanted the outdoor classroom to feel apart of nature not that we put it out in nature"and her students, are loving it. nat kids playing here students are learning about different soils, and which vegetables grow best in which soil. lainey porter/3rd grader 44:34, "we have soil that were learning about and were planting beans."other days students learn about composting. 27:44, "at every lunch we compost our fruits and vegetables. all of the brown paper towels students use to wash their hands are taken out to the compost post. standup: 49:30 "and there's apple trees and a garden along that students are learning how to grow themselves. and they even they're even eating some of the products29:10 kuda: 'we had chicken noodle soup with carrots we picked from the garden so its really special that we can say we do that." outside tomorrow? skies will continue to gradually patchy fog on monday morning. this looks to occur mostly likely in river valleys. monday afternoon, sunshine and a wind shift to the southeast will bring us mild and pleasant conditions for the start of the workweek. this pattern will continue into tuesday, however, a cold front will be moving into the area for wednesday. scattered showers will be possible along and ahead of it throughout our wednesday. that front will look to lift back north on thursday and thursday night, bringing more rain with it. there is some potential for heavier rain during this time period. the front will finally clear eastern iowa by friday, with a cooler, but seasonable weekend to follow. tonight: gradual clearing. patchy fog possible. wind: ne 5-10 low: 51 alo: 51 dbq: 52 iow: 52 48 to 54 tomorrow: pa se 5-10 high: 73 alo: 73 dbq: 71 iow: 73 70 to 76 tom. night: partly cloudy. wind: se 5-15 low: 56 alo: 56 dbq: 55 iow: 56 53 to 59 tuesday: partly cloudy. high: 78 alo: 56 wednesday: showers and storms likely, mainly early. high: 74 low: 60 thursday: showers and storms likely. high: 74 low: 57 friday: mostly sunny. high: 62 low: 47 saturday: mostly sunny. high: 64 low: 40 sunday: partly cloudy. high: 68 66 low: 51 thanks chris. did you get a higher than expected bill from alliant energy recently? the company took to social media today to apologize for the surprise. thanks chris. did you get a higher than expected bill the company took to social media today to apologize for the surprise. it said the bills are accurate, but that this summer was hotter than usual and customers used more energy than normal. alliant also said a new billing system sent a lot of them off guard. typically the company contacts users when that happens, but alliant didn't have the man power. alliant says it'll help customers come up with payment plans. it'll also be waiving late fees for affected users. josh is here, it's still early in the season, but iowa has to figure things out quickly if they want to make it to the big ten championship. minnesota, wisconsin and defense. right now after five games, the hawkeyes are ranked 11th in that category. ... iowa surrendered 198 yards rushing to northwestern in their 38-31 loss on saturday. four teams have rushed for 150 yards or more against the hawkeyes already. we've heard the team say for weeks the problems are small and fixable, but there's just a lot of confusion right now. to do a lot better job of filling gaps, helping the d- line out a lot. it's i think goes more on the linebackers than anything for stopping the run. hopefully we get better at that throughout the week." "i really don't know what it is. i really can't sit here and say to you because i don't know. there's just a lot of things going on that we really really need to just fix. i can't really sit here and tell you what the issue is because i don't know." trt: 27 oc: "because i don't know" and i'm joined right now by marc morehouse from the gazette for this week's sunday night spotlight. marc, the train's rolling off the tracks for iowa, 38-31 loss to northwestern. this was a team that averaged 16 points a game, and goes on to rush for 198 yards against iowa. the run defense continues to be a problem. what is the problem? "a whole bunch of things. they always say run fits, but to me it's just simply not getting off blocks. it's guys not being at the right place at the right time. it seems like there's not a lot of support some displacement problems, nobody's filling in. iowa's defense right now is not getting a lot of disruption on an offense. offenses are able to run fakes. they're able to run the read- option without penetration. northwestern put a lot of those together. they had a lot of third and shorts, josh. that really killed iowa." let's look at the other side his back once again, six sacks this time. cole croston got beat all day. what does iowa have to do on that side of the ball? "it's interesting. i thought ferentz kind of in the post game, didn't calling. and when there was rhythm with the offense. i know he makes the final call in what they do with rhythm. they went into a hurry up in the second quarter. it really seemed to help them and they developed some tempo. and then, they scored and they got rolled into a sense of complacency or comfort. and it backfired. iowa cal were straight drop passes. when you're trying to replace your best receiver in matt vandeberg, when you're offensive line simply isn't holding up, that's a bad combination. those plays aren't going to work... iowa has never really done the help thing. they've never done the chip thing. they've never done the tight end max protection thing because they need everybody they can in pattern, especially with matt vandeberg." if there was one bright spot, this was the first game without matt vandeberg, was riley mccarron. he had 78 yards and a touchdown. he also helped out with special teams. what impressed you the most about him? "he was good. desmond king was great on special teams. they really set the table. one thing i did really love about mccarron's game, he did go. and that part of the offense was going a little bit. they had some rhythm going with the short passing game. and i'm talking about 3 step drops at the most. and the short screen was back, the quick game was back. they went away from it... there's going to be no wide receiver coming in with a cape. they are what they are right now, and that's very inexperienced. saturday, i thought that would go more towards george kittle, and it tried. you saw beathard try to fit in some balls that were tough throws." next week at minnesota after this weekend's loss. marc morehouse joining me for the sunday night spotlight. we'll be right back, been on a winning ryder cup team. ... final day is singles play... zach faced matt fitzpatrick and they were the final group to tee off ... zach was 2 up through 4 holes, but fitzpatrick makes a comeback... on 8, he drains the long birdie putt to put the match back at all square ... but zach goes on a tear winning the 9th hole... then on 10, this long birdie putt from about 35 feet, and it rolls on in... damon green does his birdie dance, cue morris day and the time ... ryan moore secured the victory for the u.s., and zach saw the whole thing happen on the big screen on the 15th green... he's all pumped up ... after that, zach finishes his match with this birdie putt to beat fitzpatrick 4 & 3... on his 5th try, zach finally experiences what it's like to win the ryder cup and there's a lot of emotions right now "this is way heavier. way way heavier. just complete joy. like i said, i didn't feel though i didn't feel great. i just went out there, played free golf, had some great scripture i recited and just played. played a great kid too, that fitzpatrick kid; the bad thing is he's young for an american team, he can thank europe cause he's young and he's good. the previous losses weighed heavy too. however, if anything, it's just out of motivation. you have to turn those motives and positives. this is a positive that's a beginning." trt: 39 oc: "just the beginning" ... nfl action, tennessee at houston... 1st quarter, former hawkeye c.j. fiedorowicz leaps up and snags the 14-yard touchdown... c.j. had a career day with 4 catches for 48 yards and the td in the texans 27-20 win. ... lions and the bears... 4th quarter, matthew stafford back to throw, but he's picked off by former uni panther deiondre' hall... the rookie with his first career nfl interception... the bears hang on to win 17-14 ... and finally, final regular league baseball... twins and the white sox... former kernel byron buxton batted lead off for the twins, and on the first pitch of the game, he drills one to deep center... it bounces away from the center fielder and we know how fast buxton is... he makes this look easy with an inside the park home run ... and tomorrow for on iowa live, we have tim dwight and chuck long, plus the prairie football team and xavier volleyball team. be sure to join us at union station off 16th avenue in cedar rapids. and now to first alert storm team meteorologis t chris havely for your final forecast. skies will continue to gradually clear tonight, setting us up for some potential patchy fog on monday morning. this looks to occur mostly likely in river valleys. monday afternoon, sunshine and a wind shift to the southeast will bring us thanks for joining us for kcrg-tv9 news at 10. don't forget the kcrg-tv9 early ? ? announcer: he gets to the five, dives for the goal line, he's over. that's a touchdown, iowa! picked off, desmond king with another one. and he's going the other way. one man to beat. handoff again to daniels, with a cut back. first down, he may go! and the ball's out and the hawks are on it. the hawks are on it. the hawkeyes relentless pursuit of perfection is complete. desmond king again! >> iowa football with kirk ferentz is powered by iowa corn. northwestern rolled into iowa city on saturday looking a lot like the old hawkeyes with a balanced offense that produced 198 yards on the ground and 164 through the air as the wildcats outscored the hawks 38-31 souring homecoming and overshadowing a spectacular day on the kick and punt return game by desmond king and riley mccarron. welcome to iowa football with kirk ferentz.
