much on edge. jonathan: thousands of french police and troops swept the streets of paris as the fear of another attack remains all too real here. growing vigils and memorials line the streets as the country mourns. >> we want to go on the street and love again and not feel the fear. jonathan: paris was rocked friday night. french officials says three teams of terrorists, all armed with assault rifles and identical suicide vests, launched coordinated attacks on cafes, a soccer game and a concert hall. >> it's like war. crazy. jonathan 23 year old cal state : student nohemi gonzalez was having dinner with friends when a terrorist opened fire, killing her. >> she brought joy and happiness to everyone she worked with. jonathan: as a precaution, many of the top tourist attractctns here in paris remain closed, the lourve museum. french president francois hollande blames isis militants for the carnage. authorities say one of the attackers was born in france and had a petty criminal record. they are searching for accomplices, and vowing to take no mercy when they are tracked down. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, paris. eric: more now on that extra security in the u.s. armed officers are on guard in new york city's times square. more police also stationed at french government sites in new york, boston and washington. and the nfl will take extra precautions at games today. elizabeth: commitment 2016, the situation in france also shifted the focus of last night's democratic debate here on kcci. as mark tauscheck reports, the discussion focused on national security and foreign policy. mark: of course, paris came first. >> we ask you to join us in moment of silence. mark: how to fight terrorism led to an attack on hilary clinton's iraq. >> i think there was one of the worst foreign-policy blunders in the history of the united states. >> i don't think the united states has the bulk of the responsibility. i put that on our side -- assad and the iraqi dictator's. mark: martin o'malley took a shot at the republican front runner during a question on immigration. >> you will never hear this from the immigrant basher donald trump. the truth of the matter is. net immigration from mexico last year was zero. mark: clinton was annoyed by sanders' remarks on campaign contributions. bernie sanders: why do they make millions of dollars of campaign contributions? they expect to get something, everyone knows it. hillary clinton: he has basically used his answer to you know, not only do i have hundreds of thousands of donors, most of them small, and for the first time, a majority of my donors are women, 60%. mark: hillary clinton's emails resurfaced. bernie sanders: i was sick and tired, i'm still sick and tired. hillary clitnon: all of us support funding planned parenthood. all of us believe climate change is real. equal pay for equal work. they don't believe in any of that. lets focus on what the debate is about. metinka: immediately following the debate, the spin room was very busy. political leaders and the candidates campaigns had a lot to talk about, as kcci's rose heaphy reports. rose: political supporters are abuzz here in the spin room at drake university and each candidate had to make an impression, but the first point they had to make an impression on was the paris attacks. debbie wasserman schutlz: i thought it was important that they focused on that this is not something that can be done with american leadership alone, we need to work collabortively with our allies. rose: but some argued bernie sanders moved on from the subject too quickly. but his supporters say that was his plan all along. tad devine: he also wanted people to understand that the message of his campaign centers on rebuilding the middle class and he wanted to lay that down right from the beginning to the very end. rose: candidates tried their best to point out their differences. sanders and martin o'malley both pointed to hillary clinton's campaign funding from wall street. jennifer palmieri: people had said she was the senator from wall street and i think what she wanted to make clear tonight was that she was the senator for new york and 9/11 and she was proud to help that industry recover. rose: martin o'malley, the lowest in the democratic polls, was the only candidate to make an appearance in the spin room, drawing a swarm of media. martin o'malley: i think it was pretty clear that i'm the candidate that offers pretty new leadership and the ability to get things done and a proven track record to bring people together. rose: this of course isn't the last iowa will see of the candidates with the caucus coming just a couple months away. in des moines, rose heaphy, kcci 8 news iowa's news leader. elizabeth: and as co-sponsor of the event, kcci got special access to the democratic debate. eric: alyx sacks joins us from drake university. alyx, who did moderators say had a strong showing? alyx: eric and elizabeth, there are a lot of good things for all three candidates. something different from the first debate is a lot of analysts think there wasn't one obvious and clear winner. kcci's kevin cooney was a co-moderator. he got to ask questions related to immigration and education. cooney says he feels the two strongest candidates due to their strong personalities were clinton and sanders. but he also says o'malley came out much stronger than the first debate. one positive point for voters, candidates were able to separate themselves and their ideas. like minimum wage. clinton says $12 dollars. where sanders and o'malley are following the suit of $15. candidates really went head to head and had different ideas on how they would handle wall street. analyst denis goldford says that's when clinton proved her toughness. dennis: the sharp elbows enable hillary clinton to show that she's tough, that she could take a punch as well as give one, so while they went after her in various ways that actually helped her. kevin: the intensity of all three of these people and how they care passionately about their issues and how they care passionately about how they feel. that's what comes across i think when you see them in person. alyx: coming up next, what kevin thought about this experience. what he wishes he could have done. that story in 30 minutes. eric: we have a lot of people in town for that debate and it has been beautiful weather-wise. frank: folks not from iowa are probably not used to these temperatures they probably expected cooler for this weekend. 47 here, 43 for ames, 45 for fort dodge. our average high temperature is 48 degrees. when you wake up in the mid to upper 40's you think things are probably heading in the right direction for the afternoon. just a few high clouds, mainly clear skies across the region. moisture down to the south lifting to the north throughout the next couple of days bringing us a slight chance for rain tomorrow and better chances tuesday and wednesday. 47 here in des moines, knoxville at 27. north platte, 30, throughout the afternoon it will be nice, 62 degrees and more clouds by the afternoon. we start the day with sunshine. partly sunny, breezy today, 62, rain tomorrow morning at mid 50's for highs. we are going to track all this coming up in a bit. elizabeth: thanks frank. well, we have to break from paris and the debate to talk about the huge, history making win by the iowa hawkeyes. eric: it was a blackout blowout. eric: a blackout blowout! the team certainly looked intimidating taking the field against minnesota at kinnick. two standout performances, leshun daniels rushed for a career-high 195 yards and three touchdowns. and cj beathard threw for 213 yards and ran for two td's. it was enough to get the win, 40 to 35 over the gophers. the hawks are now 10 and oh for the first time in school history. andy garman will tell us what this means for conference play a little bit later this half hour. elizabeth: now unfortunately the news is not so great for iowa state. the cyclones were ahead for much of the game, but with 3 minutes left, oklahoma threw for a 7-yard touchdown pass, giving them a everyone for their hard work on behalf of the campaign. and she said she looked forward to returning next november for a big victory party, saying iowa will turn blue. also watching the debate, a voter panel. kcci brought 17 voters together, many of them undecided, to see how this second debate could make or break a candidate. the group engaged in discussion about what they thought the candidates would address, and then watched the debate together to see if they were right. after the debate, they were asked to share who they think won the show. kerwin dobbins: i think all of the candidates really stood out, and each of them had something individual to say that made them stand out. thomas banse: i just thought she seemed strong, composed and performed well under pressure. emily enquist: always get really fired up with bernie sanders, honestly. when he gets to talking about the issues that he is passionate about, he really drives his points home. elizabeth: we also want twitter took part in. the social media site says hillary clinton was the most talked about candidate, 44% of tweets with the hashtag demdebate were about her. sanders was second, followed by o'malley. the most tweeted-about issues, energy and the environment was at the top. followed in order by healthcare, immigration, national security and foreign affairs. people on facebook are also talking about the debate. that exchange between clinton and sanders on campaign finance was the most-posted about moment. facebook also showed the most engage states where vermont, new hampshire, oregon, west closer look at the candidates. but as cbs's weijia jiang reports, hillary clinton took some heat from her opponents. weijia: hillary clinton met with supporters right after saturdays debate in iowa. hillary clinton: thank you all for making this such a successful campaign. weijia: the former secretary of state was the first to field questions about foreign policy after the attacks in paris. hillary clinton: we have to look at isis as the leading threat of an international terror network. weijia: clinton entered saturdays debate with a strong lead in the polls. and her opponents made a point to go after the front runner. senator bernie sanders questioned the campaign cash shes received from big business. bernie sanders: why do they make millions of dollars of campaign contributions? they expect to get something, everybody knows that. hillary clinton: he basically used his answer to impune my integrity. weijia jiang: cbs news teamed up with twitter for the debate, encouraging minds were changed by the end of the debate. emmy: when you put a group of undecided voters together in one room, you will see feet tapping, hands locked, and wide eyes. >> i am leaning towards bernie. >> i am leaning towards hillary clinton, currently. >> i am leaning towards governor martin o' malley of maryland. emmy: meet the voter panel at the second democratic debate held at drake university. seventeen democrats looking to support a candidate based on their debate performance. jared turner: as a college student, college reform is primary for me, so that is something that i would like to hear them talk about. emmy: all eyes were on the democrats as they went head to head on some of the strongest topics facing our country. bernie sanders: saudi arabia, turkey, iran, jordan, all these nations are going to have to get their hands dirty, their boots on the ground, they are going to have to take on isis. emmy: while gun control, immigration, and college affordability were hot topics, voters gave the candidates props for other ideas. michael schrodt: i think that bernie sanders made great points on mental health. emmy: by the time the debate was over, the panel was divided on who was the most impressive. nine hands for hillary, five hands for bernie, and only two hands for martin o malley. -- three hands for bernie sanders. robert ford: i just thought she seemed strong, composed and performed well under pressure. benjamin verhasselt: i came in very ready to support bernie sanders or even hillary. but i think martin o'malley was the most consistent. emily students here at the voter panel what they wished the candidates addressed more of during the debate, they answered climate change, race relations, and women's rights. they said that they hope to hear vote after the year when the caucuses rollaround. elizabeth: republican candidates had a lot to say on social media during the democratic debate. most candidates focused their tweets on the dem's responses to questions about radical islam and terrorism. jeb bush commented, "yes, we are at war with radical islam terrorism." john kasich tweeted, "hillary clinton has consistently failed to understand the depth of the isis threat. we need john kasich's leadership." carly fiorina has similar thoughts, saying, "we need a president who will see and speak and act on the truth. hillary clinton will not call this islamic terrorism. i will." and finally, donald trump chimed in with his question, "why won't president obama use the term islamic terrorism? isn't it now, after all of this time and so much death, about time." representatives from the republican national committee also gave their thoughts on the night. sean spicer: i think this is going to come back to haunt hillary clinton. i think her comments on 9/11 are going to be devastating going into a general but all in all it really wasn't that exciting of a night. i think it was just a perfunctory measure they had to michael lavalle is leading a delegation of des moines embassy club members, hundreds of miles away from paris in the small french town of montbrison. he says there is a lot of concern within the country, and the attacks represent a turning point. >> before it was something else but now, this is war. elizabeth: local terrorism expert tom conley say he thinks if terrorists were going to hit the u.s. as well, they would have done it the same time they hit france. drake professor mark kende says the attacks aren't a total surprise. with previous ones in both madrid and london. eric: as paris mourns, we are learning more about the bombers. they killed 129 and wooded more than 350. the attacks are front and center as global leaders gather for an international summit. nikole killion has the latest including what president obama said. nikole: the president said this was an attack on the civilized world. president obama: the killing of innocent space-time a twisted ideology is an attack not just on france or turkey, but it's an attack on the civilized world. nikole: president obama says that as the g 20 summit gets on, the terror attacks dominate the discussion as they discuss how to deal with isis which is claimed responsibility. francois hollande was supposed to be there but pulled out to deal with the attacks. today he met with top leaders as the country is on high alert. many popular tourist sites and the eiffel tower have been shut down. authorities continue to search for suspects and have questions at several people in connection. nikole killion, kcci 8 news. eric: officials here in the u.s. are on hilar and say there's no evidence of any specific threat related to this, but have stepped up security in several cities and that nfl games. fans are discouraged from bringing bags into stadiums. elizabeth: and cities around the world are paying tribute to the victims of fridays paris terror attacks. many are taking part by lighting local monuments with red, white and blue, the colors of the french flag. and back in the u.s. the lights on top of the suntrust building in downtown i go to the store, and somebody's, smellin' around, "mmm! i smell cookies." i say, "oh no, you just smell me. i just got out of work. that's honey bunches of oats, that's all." >> welcome back, almost 5:44. temperatures yesterday were nice. 66 here, almost 20 degrees above average. degrees temperatures, a bit breezy out of the south at 5-15. elizabeth: hundreds of bernie sanders supporters watched last night's debate at the varsity theatre located across the street from campus. senator sanders arrived shortly after the debate, speaking to the capacity crowd of nearly 500 people. bernie sanders: we have a real path to victory. the path starts right here in your great state in iowa. if we work hard, i believe we are going to win iowa. maggie timboe: seeing him tonight just gives me hope that as a young woman going off to college and fighting for my right to equal pay, and everything in my future. seeing him so close, i just felt such an energy, the power of the people who love bernie sanders have. it's incredible and i believe we can work wonders with it. elizabeth: martin o'malley also spoke to supporters as he made his way to the debate. martin o'malley: i want to thank you for everything you're doing on the ground, every single day. and days like these when you've seen the images, you've seen on the news for the last 24 hours. all of that should remind us the best days in life are not the easy days, and as a nation we're not called to be great just when times are easy. it's in the face of hatred and intolerance. eric: our political analyst marc sandalow joins us live from washington to break down our democratic debate. and marc, the face-to-face was supposed to focus on the economy, but events in paris shaped the first 30 minutes. what kind of role will the paris attacks play in the 2016 election? marc: just this morning we are hearing it's possible one of the attackers came in with refugees from syria. if that's the case, last night's debate, all three talked about how they very much supported from syria into the united states. it something the republicans have said they are against. is that something republicans go after democrats for? absolutely. we don't know what difference this will make a year from now, you can make the argument that this is good politically for candidates like donald trump talk about building walls and shutting down immigrants and at the same time you can say it's good for candidates like hillary clinton who clearly has foreign-policy experience no one on the stage last night or on the republican side has. eric: bernie sanders and martin o'malley took shots at hillary clinton. do you think either of them landed a punch? marc: bernie sanders, you heard him say it. clearly he understands that iowa eight years ago, barack obama's ability to tie hillary clinton to the iraq vote was very powerful and he tried to do that. both of them went after her for connections to wall street. big picture, this was a good night for hillary clinton. six weeks ago they were panicked about the tony: saturday was a historic day at kinnick stadium that started with the grapple on the gridiron where iowa took on oklahoma state. saturday night, the iowa football team moved to 10-0 for the first time in school history and brought home hardware. >> it was great to have floyd back here in iowa city where it belongs. going out there last year and coming back this year and having a good game. tony: the pig is back home at kinnick stadium. thanks to a performance by the hawkeyes. >> the offense was playing tough and working their butts off. the kind of grind it out there. tony: 500 and six total yards of offense including 195 yards from lashawn daniels on the ground including this 51 yard sprint to ice the game. >> i was just doing whatever i could to help the team, help us get a victory. i was doing whatever we needed and i had to go out there and make a play. tony: next up iowa takes on purdue to take the big 10 west. elizabeth: in other sports news this morning, ronda rousey suffered a devastating upset last night. holly holm knocked out the bantamweight champion in the second round. holm landed some powerful hits to rousey's head, leaving her with a bloody nose after the first round. rousey attempted to take back the lead in the second round, but holm snapped a massive kick to the head that dropped rousey to the ground. holm continued to deliver blows until the referee intervened and the match was over. eric: people around the world continued to show support for the victims of the terror attacks. the lights on the eiffel tower have been turned off in remembrance. citizens are paying tribute by holding vigils, this one in hong elizabeth: welcome back to kcci. in other news this morning, four people are in the hospital this morning after a single vehicle crash on i-235 saturday. west des moines police tell kcci a vehicle lost control near valley west drive around 8:00 last night. no one was killed in the crash, but police say several people were ejected. no word on the extent of their injuries. another crash early saturday morning left one van meter man dead. danny dunton was driving westbound on interstate 80 around 1:30 a.m. saturday. when he began to exit at the van meter interchange, he hit a vehicle parked on the shoulder, causing his car to flip over into the ditch. dunton was pronounced dead at the scene. authorities are still investigating the crash. eric: and gas prices went down again yesterday. people in the metro are now seeing prices around $2.09 a gallon. that's down 5 cents from early saturday morning. and amidst the political candidates last night caitlyn , jenner was also in des moines. jenner was not here for the debate but made a few stops at local night clubs. a few people caught a glimpse of her while she was out at the garden last night. i'm sure we will hear much more about her visit and what brought her to town. elizabeth: we want to get a last check the weather. frank: we have been spoiled all right to the latest from paris overnight. they are questioning the family of one of the man identified as a suicide attacker. elizabeth: the death toll still stands at 129 with more than 350 wounded. the attacks are going to be a big topic at this week's g-20 summit in turkey. president obama is there this morning. security there is incredibly tight. eric: and here in the u.s. as well. no credible threats but security is being beefed up in several major cities. cbs's jonathan vigliotti is in paris this morning, a city very much on edge. jonathan: thousands of french police and troops swept the streets of paris as the fear of another attack remains all too real here. growing vigils and memorials line the streets as the country mourns. >> we did not want to stay home, we wanted to go on the street and live again, and not to feel the fear that they want us to have. jonathan: paris was rocked friday night. french officials says three teams of terrorists, all armed with assault rifles and identical suicide vests, launched coordinated attacks on cafes, a soccer game, and a concert hall. >> it is like war. jonathan: 23-year-old cal state student nohemi gonzalez was having dinner with friends when a terrorist opened fire, killing her. she was spending a semester studying abroad in paris. >> she brought joy and happiness to everyone she worked with. jonathan: as a precaution, many of the top tourist attractions in paris have been closed including the eiffel tower and , the louvre museum. french president francois hollande blames isis militants for the carnage. authorities say one of the attackers was born in france and had a petty criminal record. they are searching for accomplices and vowing to take no mercy when they are tracked down. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, paris. eric: more now on that, extra security in the u.s. armed officers are on guard in new york city's times square. more police also stationed at french government sites in new york, boston, and washington. and the nfl is going to take extra precautions at their games today as well. in commitment 2016 news, -- the elizabeth: in commitment 2016, the situation in france also shifted the focus of last night's democratic debate here on kcci. as mark tauscheck reports, the discussion focused on national security and foreign policy. mark: of course, paris came first. >> we ask you to join us in moment of silence. mark: how to fight terrorism led to an attack on hillary clinton's vote in favor of the war in iraq. mr. sanders: i think that was one of the worst history blunders in the united states ms. clinton: i don't think u.s. . ms. clinton: i don't think u.s. has the bulk of responsibility. mark: martin o'malley took a shot at the republican front runner during a question on immigration. mr. o'malley: you'll never hear this from that immigrant bashing , carnival barker donald trump. ,the truth of the matter is net , immigration last year from mexico was zero. mark: clinton was annoyed by sanders' remarks on campaign contributions. mr. sanders: why do they make millions of dollars of campaign contributions? they expect to get something, everybody knows that. ms. clinton: he has basically used his answer to impugn my integrity. let's be frank here. wait a minute, senator. not only do i hundreds of thousands of donors, most of them small, diane very proud that the majority of my donors are women, 60%. mark: hilary clinton's emails resurfaced. mr. sanders: i was sick and tired of hillary clinton's e-mails. i'm still sick and tired. ms. clinton: all of us believe finding planned parenthood, climate change is real, equal pay for equal work. they do not believe in any of that. let's focus on -- focus on what this election is really going to be about. elizabeth: immediately following the debate, the spin room was busy. political leaders and the candidates' campaigns had a lot to talk about, as kcci's rose heaphy reports. rose: political supporters are abuzz here in the spin room at drake university and each candidate had to make an impression, but the first point they had to make an impression on was the paris attacks. >> i thought it was important that they focused on that this is not something that can be done with american leadership alone, we need to work collabortively with our allies. rose: but some argued, bernie sanders moved on from the subject too quickly. but his supporters say that was his plan all along. >> he also wanted people to understand that the message of his campaign centers on rebuilding the middle class in america. and he wanted to lay that down right from the beginning to the very end. rose: candidates tried their best to point out their differences. sanders and martin o'malley both pointed to hillary clinton's campaign funding from wall street. >> people had said she was the senator from wall street and i think what she wanted to make clear tonight is she was the senator for new york and 9/11 and she was proud to help that industry recover. rose martin o'malley, the lowest : in the democratic polls, was the only candidate to make an appearance in the spin room, drawing a swarm of media. mr. o'malley: i think it was pretty clear that i'm the candidate that offers pretty clear leadership and the ability to get things done and a proven track record to bring people together. rose: this, of course, isn't the last iowa will see of the candidates, with the caucus coming just a couple months away. in des moines, rose heaphy, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. elizabeth: and as co-sponsor of the event kcci got special access to the democratic debate. eric: alyx sacks joins us from drake university. alyx, who did moderators say had a strong showing? alyx: they really did. in fact, there is good things being said about all three candidates. unlike the first debate, we are not hearing of one clear and obvious winner. kcci's kevin cooney was a co-moderator in the debate. he thinks he saw a really good things from clinton and sanders and they showed strong personality, which is why they showed strongly last night. as to martin o'malley, he says he showed up stronger in this debate than the last one. candidates were able to separate themselves and their ideas, like minimum wage. clinton says $12, where sanders and o'malley are following the suit of $15. another area they went head-to-head and really showed some contrast is with how to handle wall street. that is when dennis goldford said clinton showed how tough she can be. >> the sharp elbows enable hillary clinton to show that she's tough, that she could take a punch as well as give one, so while they went after her in various ways, that actually helped her. kevin: the intensity of all three of these people and how they care passionately about their issues and how they care passionately about how they feel, that's what comes across, i think, when you see them in person. alyx: coming up next, what kevin blowout. the team certainly looked intimidating taking the field against minnesota at kinnick. standout performances for the hawks leshun daniels rushed for , a career-high 195 yards and three touchdowns. and c.j. beathard threw for 213 yards and ran for two more touchdowns. it was enough to get the win, 40-35 over the gophers. the hawks are now 10-0 for the first time in school history. andy garman is going to tell us what this means for conference play a little bit later this afternoon. elizabeth: now unfortunately, the news is not so great for iowa state. the cyclones were ahead for much of the game but with three minutes left, oklahoma threw for a 7-yard touchdown pass, giving them a 35-31 victory over iowa state. too bad. andy will also have more on the loss a little bit surprised supporters by stopping by a debate watch party. clinton thanked everyone for their hard work on behalf of the campaign, and she said she looked forward to returning next november for a big victory party, saying iowa will turn blue. also watching the debate, a voter panel. kcci brought 17 voters together, many of them undecided, to see how this second debate could make or break a candidate. the group engaged in discussion about what they thought the candidates would address, and then watched the debate together to see if they were right. after the debate, they were asked to share who they think won the show. >> i think all of the candidates really stood out, and each of them had something individual to say that made them stand out. clicks i thought just overall she seemed strong, composed, and performed well under pressure. >> i always get really fired up with bernie sanders, honestly. when he gets to talking about the issues that he is passionate about, he immigration, national security and foreign affairs. talking about the debate. one exchange between clinton and sanders on campaign finance was the most-posted about moment. facebook also shows the most engaged states during the debate were vermont, new hampshire, oregon, west virginia, and of course iowa. elizabeth: we want to head back to frank. mid and we are still talking about the mid-60's. they expect to get something, everybody knows that. ms. clinton: he basically used his answer to impune my integrity. weijia: cbs news teamed up with twitter for the debate, encouraging people to post their thoughts with the hashtag "dem debate." twitter tracked which candidates were talked about the most and the most popular topics. >> you saw a lot of conversation about gun issues. you saw a lot of conversation about wall street. weijia: : rmer maryland governor martin o'malley's most talked about moment came when he attacked a candidate for the other party. mr. o'malley: and let's say it in our debate, because you'll never hear this from that barker, donald trump. [applause] weijia: all three candidates celebrated their debate performance. now it's time for voters to decide. weijia jiang, cbs news, des moines, iowa. elizabeth: outside of the debate, kcci hosted a special panel at meredith hall of uncommitted voters. as kcci's emmy victor shows us, some of their minds were changed by the end of the debate. emmy: when you put a group of undecided voters together in one room, you will see feet tapping, hands locked and wide eyes. >> i am leaning towards bernie. >> i am leaning towards hillar clinton currently. >> i am leaning towards governor martin o'malley of maryland. emmy: meet the voter panel at the second democratic debate held at drake university. 17 democrats looking to support a candidate based on their debate performance. >> as a college student, college reform is primary to so that is may something that i would like to hear them talk about. emmy: all eyes were on the democrats as they went head to head on some of the strongest topics facing our country. saudi arabia, turkey, iran, jordan, all these nations are going to have to get their hands dirty, their boots on the ground, they are going to have to take on isis. emmy: while gun control, immigration, and college affordability were hot topics, voters gave the candidates props for other ideas. >> i think that bernie sanders made great points on mental health. emmy: by the time the debate was over, the panel was divided on who was the most impressive. raise your hand if you think that hillary did the best tonight. nine hands for hillary, five hands for martin o'malley, and only three hands for bernie sanders. >> i just thought she seemed strong, composed and performed well under pressure. i came in very ready to support bernie sanders or even hillary. i think that martin o'malley was the most consistent. >> i always get really fired up with bernie sanders honestly. when he gets to talking about the issues that he is passionate about, he really drives his points home. emmy: when i asked the students here at the voter panel what they wished the candidates addressed more of during the debate, they answered climate change, race relations and women's rights. they said that they hope to hear more about these topics at the next debate. reporting from drake university, emmy victor, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. eric: kcci did have a special role in last night's debate. we were a co-sponsor and kevin cooney was a moderator. alyx sacks is live at drake university this morning. what did kevin have to say afterward about this awesome opportunity? alyx: eric, kevin called it a unique experience. he has done debate in the past but he has never done anything like this on a national scale. but he says it was a bit like riding a bike in the sense you ask the tough questions and if you don't get quite the full answer you're looking for, you ask a follow-up question. like when he asked bernie sanders some tough questions on how he plans to fund free public college tuition. kevin: well, one of the things you want to do is have states pay for a third of this $70 billion plan, correct? there are 16 states that are running budget deficits right now. where are they expected to come up with it? alyx: moderating is special, but also a stressful task. about a year went into planning for this debate. a lot of time and energy went into developing tough questions. but in light of what happened in paris, a lot of that preparation had to shift and friday before the debate in order to address the topics on everybody's mines, foreign policy and handling of extremists. several questions like that came from john dickerson. now, kevin cooney wasn't the only familiar face to central iowans. the des moines register's kathy obradovich sat beside him. both got to ask questions about immigration and education. >> two big topics and when you boil it down, i had 5, 10 different follow-ups but you have got to make way for the other issues. kathy: i thought moderating was generally like standing at the top of an olympic ski lift and looking down and thinking to yourself this is really going to , be fun if i survive, you know? alyx: in the end, you know what kevin says he wishes he could have done? he wishes he could have had more time. he said the two hours flew by. live from drake university, alyx sacks, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. eric: and we are getting your reaction this morning as well. our now poll wants to, know did last night's dem debate help you decide on a candidate? some of them did and some of them did not. 37% of the people say yes, it shaped them toward clinton, 29% toward sanders, and a few said toward martin o'malley. 13% said they are voting for the gop ticket and 16% are still undecided. you can still vote and we'll be bringing you the latest results elizabeth: republican candidates had a lot to say on social media during the democratic debate. most candidates focused their tweets on the dem's responses to questions about radical islam and terrorism. jeb bush commented, "yes, we are at war with radical islam terrorism." john kasich tweeted, "hillary clinton has consistently failed to understand the depth of the isis threat. we need john kasich's leadership." carly fiorina has similar thoughts, saying, "we need a president who will see and speak and act on the truth. hillary clinton will not call this islamic terrorism. i will." and finally, donald trump chimed in with this question, "why won't president obama use the term islamic terrorism? isn't it now, after all of this time and so much death, about time." representatives from the republican national committee also gave their thoughts on the night. >> i think this is going to come back to haunt hillary clinton. i think her comments on 9/11 are going to be devastating going into a general, but all in all, it really wasn't that exciting of a night. i think it was just a perfunctory measure they had to eric: a lot of people weighing in on what happened last night. elizabeth: the time is 6:38, and we want to head over to frank for a look at the forecast. frank: a great weekend out there but things are starting to change a little bit. we have clear skies to start your sunday out but if we widen things out, you will notice down to the south some moisture. we are starting to tap into some of this to the south in the form of rain and clouds. the wind out of the south will be drawing up the moisture throughout the next 12-24 hours, eventually meaning a chance for rain. 43 degrees in des moines, 39 in minneapolis, well above average. 27 in north platte, that is about where we should be. anytime you are in the low 40's waking up, chances are you are over the next couple of days, things are starting to change. a nice day today, rain early tomorrow, temperatures drop a bit on tuesday. temperature still in the low 60's. elizabeth: the violence in paris has also sent shock waves here in des moines. michael lavalle is leading a delegation of des moines embassy club members hundreds of miles away from paris, in the small french town of montbrison. he says there is a lot of concern within the country, and that he thinks the attacks represent a point -- a turning point. >> before it was something else. but now, this is war. elizabeth: local terrorism expert tom conley say he thinks if terrorists were going to hit the u.s. as well they would have done it the same time they hit france. drake professor mark kende says the attacks aren't a total surprise, with previous ones in both madrid and london. eric: as the city of paris mourns, we are learning more about the bombers involved in that terror tragedy that killed 129 people and killed -- wounded more than 350. nikole killion has the very latest, including what the president said just a little while ago about the attacks. nikole: the president said this was not just an attack on france but on the civilized world. >> the killing of innocent people based on the twisted ideology is an attack not just on france, not just on turkey, but is an attack on the civilized world. nikole: president obama spoke shortly after meeting with the president of turkey as the g-20 summit gets underway in that country. the paris attacks now dominating discussions as leaders figure out how to deal with the militant group isis or isil, which has claimed responsibility for the attacks. french president francois hollande was supposed to be at that meeting but pulled out to deal with the attacks. today, he met with top french leaders as the country remains in mourning and on high alert. french troops have been deployed popular tourists sites like the eiffel tower have been shut down. meantime, authorities continue to search for suspects and have questioned several people in connection with the attacks. in washngton, i'm nikole killion. eric: thank you, nicole. officials in the u.s. are also on high alert. they say there is no evidence of reported attacks today. elizabeth: and cities around the world are paying tribute to the victims of friday's paris terror attacks. many are taking part by lighting local monuments with red, white and blue, the colors of the french flag. in brazil, the iconic christ the show of support. frank: welcome back, 6:44. the morning is just flying by on kcci eight news this morning again. -- weekend. this is our stuart webcam just before sunrise. we will see the sun out there this morning but why this afternoon, we will bring in a few more clouds. 43 in des moines, 41 in ames, marshalltown at 45 degrees. mainly clear skies will translate to some sunshine in just a little bit, and a great morning to head out to some breakfast. how about a breakfast buffet this morning? [applause] the truth is, net immigration last year from mexico was zero. mark: clinton was annoyed by bernie sanders' remarks on campaign contributions. mr. sanders: why do they make millions of dollars of campaign contributions? they expect to get something, everyone knows it. ms. clinton: he has basically used his answer to impugn my integrity. let's be frank here. wait a minute, senator. you know not only do i have donors, most of them small, but i am proud that the majority of my donors are women, 60%. mark: hilary clinton's emails resurfaced. mr. sanders: i was sick and tired of hillary clinton's e-mail i'm still sick and tired. ms. clinton: all of us believe finding planned parenthood, climate change is real. all of us want equal pay for real work. -- equal pay for equal work. let's focus on what the election is really about. eric: -- elizabeth: and immediately following the debate the spin room was busy. political leaders and the candidates' campaigns had a lot to talk about, as kcci's rose heaphy reports. rose: political supporters are abuzz here in the spin room at drake university and each candidate had to make an impression, but the first point they had to make an impression on was the paris attacks. >> i thought it was important that they focused on that this is not something that can be done with american leadership alone, we need to work collabortively with our allies. rose: but some argued, bernie sanders moved on from the subject too quickly. but his supporters say that was his plan all along. >> he also wanted people to understand that the message of his campaign centers on rebuilding the middle class and he wanted to lay that down right from the beginning to the very end. rose: candidates trying to point out their differences. sanders and martin o'malley both pointed to hillary clinton's campaign funding from wall street. >> people had said she was the senator from wall street and i think what she wanted to make clear tonight was that she was the senator for new york and 9/11 and she was proud to help that industry recover. rose martin o'malley, the lowest : in the democratic polls, was the only candidate to make an appearance in the spin room, drawing a swarm of media. mr. o'malley: i think it was pretty clear that i'm the candidate that offers new leadership and the ability to get things done and a proven track record to bring people together. rose: this, of course, isn't the last iowa will see of the candidates, with the caucus coming just a couple months away. in des moines, rose heaphy, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. elizabeth: and as co-sponsor of the event kcci got special access to the democratic debate. morning. a strong showing? alyx: eric and elizabeth, the moderators are saying they have seen good things about each candidate and unlike the last debate, it does not seem to have a clear-cut winner. kevin cooney set up front as a co-moderator and said what stood out the most was strong personalities. hillary clinton and bernie sanders showed strong personalities, and he also said that martin o'malley came out candidates were able to separate themselves and their ideas, like minimum wage. clinton says $12, where sanders and o'malley are following the suit of $15. candidates really went head to head and had different ideas on how to handle wall street. analyst denis goldford says that's when clinton proved her toughness. >> the sharp elbows enable hillary clinton to show that she's tough, that she could take a punch as well as give one, so while they went after her in various ways, that actually helped her. kevin: the intensity of all three of these people and how they care passionately about their issues and how they care passionately about how they feel, that's what comes across, i think, when you see them in person. alyx: coming up next, how kevin cooney felt about his experience and what he wishes he could have done. that story in 30 minutes. eric: it is 7:00 it a blackout blowout. the team certainly looked intimidating taking the field against minnesota at kinnick. two standout performances, leshun daniels rushed for a career-high 195 yards and three touchdowns. and c.j. beathard threw for 213 yards and ran for two touchdowns. it was enough to get the win, 40-35 over the gophers. the hawks are now 10-0 for the first time in school history. andy garman will tell us what this means for conference play a little bit later this half hour. elizabeth: now unfortunately, the news is not so great for iowa state. it was senior night for those guys. watching the debate, a voter panel. kcci brought 17 voters together, many of them undecided, to see how this second debate could make or break a candidate. the group engaged in discussion about what they thought the candidates would address, and to see if they were right. after the debate, they were asked to share who they think won the show. >> i think all of the candidates really stood out, and each of them had something individual to say that made them stand out. >> i just thought she seemed strong, composed, and performed very well under pressure. >> i always get really fired up with in the college football playoff rankings, taking on minnesota. leshun daniels phenomenal last night. inside the 10 yard line and he goes for the touchdown run. he had 195 rushing yards. including a 51 yard score, three touchdowns in all. cj beathard scores a td as well. minnesota made it a game a couple times, but the hawkeyes had just enough. iowa improves to 10-0 for the first time in school history, winning 40-35 and keeping floyd rosedale in iowa city. next up for the hawks, senior day. the purdue boilermakers come to town next saturday at 11:00 a.m. and will be televised nationally by espn two. to their seniors yesterday, and emotional day for the guys playing their final game taking on oklahoma state. this is a play people will talk about for a long time as well. ruled a touchdown and after a lengthy review they decided no touchdown. the tip of the ball hit the ground and that was enough to make them call incomplete. i disagree. the cyclones kicked a field goal but it cost them four points. instead of a touchdown and seven, they only got three. joel lanning plays tremendously well at times. here is a great touchdown run. three minutes left oklahoma , state takes the lead, 35-31. the final drive ends on the first play. lanning is picked off. cyclones come close but fall short, 35-31, oklahoma state with a win. isu wraps it up with two road games, the first at kansas state next saturday at 11:00 a.m. on nationally televised fox sports one. then they play at west virginia to wrap things up. high school football was rough yesterday for central iowa teams, albia and van meter both lost in the semi final round. let's go to iowa city for a record breaker, 42,000 plus fans in action to see the hawkeyes take on oklahoma state in the first ever outdoor wrestling meet. the grapple on the gridiron got started in a fantastic way if you are a hawkeye fan. thomas gillman, major decision to fire up the crowd, 4-0, iowa has the lead. the former selfies polk standout corey first to field questions about foreign policy ms. clinton: we have to look at isis as the leading threat of an international terror network. weijia: clinton entered saturday's debate with a strong gave the candidates props for other ideas. >> i think that bernie sanders made great points on mental health. emmy: by the time the debate was over, the panel was divided on who was the most impressive. regime and if you think hillary did the best tonight? nine hands for hillary, five hands for martin o'malley and only three hands for bernie sanders. >> i just thought she seemed strong, composed and performed very well under pressure. i came in very ready to support bernie sanders or even hillary. i think that martin o'malley was the most consistent. >> i always get really fired up with bernie sanders honestly. when he gets to talking about the issues that he is passionate about, he really drives his points home. emmy: when i asked the students here at the voter panel what they wished the candidates addressed more of during the debate, they answered climate change, race relations and women's rights. they said they would like to hear a lot more about these issues at the next moderators. alyx sacks is live at drake university this morning. what did kevin have to say about this awesome opportunity? alyx: eric, kevin called it a unique experience. although he has moderated debates in the past, never quite anything like this on the national scale. but he says it was a bit like riding a bike in the sense you ask the tough questions and if you don't get quite the full answer you're looking for, you ask a follow-up question. like when he asked bernie sanders some tough questions on how he plans to fund free public college tuition. kevin: well, one of the things you want to do is have states pay for a third of this $70 billion plan, correct? there are 16 states that are running budget deficits right now. where are they expected to come up with it? alyx: moderating is special, but also a stressful task. about a year went into planning for this debate. a lot of time and energy went into developing tough questions. and then in light of what happened in harris, a lot of that preparation had to shift rather last-minute in order to address the topic on foreign policy and handling of extremists. now, kevin cooney wasn't the only familiar face to central iowans. the des moines register's kathy obradovich sat beside him. both got to ask questions about immigration and education. kevin: two big topics and you know, when you boil it down, i had five to ten different follow-ups, but you got to make way for the other issues. kathy: i thought moderating was generally like standing at the top of an olympic ski lift and looking down and thinking to yourself, this is really going to be fun if i survive, you know? alyx: in the end, you know what kevin says he wishes he had, eric and elizabeth? just a little more time. live from drake university, candidate. our results so far this morning. 39% of the folks say yes it kind of help them decide on hillary clinton. 6% said yes toward martin o'malley and 19% said they will probably vote for a gop person, but 12% are still undecided. elizabeth: our coverage of the democratic debate continues all morning. marc: just this morning we are learning that at least one of the attackers came over with a group of syrian refugees. last night in the debate, they were all asked about the syrian refugees and the democrats have consistently said, we need to let more in the united states. last night they all said at least 65,000, something the republicans are against. i am sure there were others who will say at a time when the world is this fragile, do we want a real state mogul or neurosurgeon as commander in chief rather than say, a former secretary of state?
