Roads will improve as the day goes along, watch for slick spots. Temperature at 24 and thats where it will stay all day. Bundle up as you head out. Elizabeth alyx sacks is watching the roads. What are you seeing . Alyx we are on 35 north, close to ankeny. I can tell you it is much roads are pretty clear, when you are a major interstates but more troublesome spots seem to be side streets and on and off ramps have been really slippery. Black ice underneath the ice, a lot of crews out there still plowing and trying to keep the roads clear. Its working as far as interstates are concerned. The side streets within more highly travel areas might be ok but if you are going on less traveled roads, be more cautious because they are not as clear. 65 was not as clear, that was maybe down to one lane. South on 35, south of des moines, that is covered, they are saying that is covered on both sides of the highway and there is blowing snow. This time yesterday, we could hardly see in front of us because of the snow. Freeway, we start to see more black ice and thats what you really want to slow down for. Anytime there is inclement weather, anytime the roads are wet, give yourself extra time whether its getting out the door or between you and the car in front of you. The city dispatched about 20 of its trucks before the storm hit, and employees covered more than 700 miles of streets until the storm passed. Three charter flights today and three more tomorrow are scheduled to take more hawk fans to california. Shaina elizabeth, this storm is expected to bring the northeastern u. S. Its first major snow of the season. Snow and freezing rain swept into the area last night. The storm left snow and ice throughout the upper midwest, and parts of the south and lower midwest are dealing with flooding this morning as a result of heavy rain. At least 43 people have died in the last week as a result of the wild weather. The storm system is expected to move out to the Atlantic Ocean tonight. Also overnight, two more suspected terrorists were arrested in brussels, belgium. Police say these two people are suspected of planning attacks in brussels during the holidays. Militarystyle uniforms, isis propaganda, and computer materials were seized during a search, and theyre being examined. No weapons were found. And right now tensions are high jury decided not to indict two officers in the shooting death of 12yearold tamir rice last year. Officer Timothy Loehmann is accused of shooting the 12yearold less than two seconds after arriving at a park where rice was playing with a toy gun. Des Moines Police are still looking for a suspect in a deadly double shooting sunday night. It happened at 5201 south union street, east of the airport. Monday we learned the names of the two victims. 36yearold Tacono Conner died of a gunshot wound. And 37yearold amy stolki was also shot and is recovering this morning at a local hospital. We spoke with People Living in the apartments the victims were found in, and they do not think connor and stolki were living in the building. Police say they hope to release more information today. Des Moines Police are asking for your help finding a man allegedly connected to five robberies. Take a look at his picture here. More cars are on the road so it seems to be moving smoothly. The bad news is its not perfect. There will be slippery spots. Anything on and off the interstate with on ramps and off ramps are still covered in snow and we have quite a bit of black ice. Also underneath bridges and on bridges are more slippery and i wouldnt expect that to change much through the day because they arent going to warm up too much. Thats what you should really note. Travel on the side streets are still covered in snow. I know they had crews out all night with more plows than i theyre working very hard with conditions that are not perfect but give yourself extra time heading out and especially between you and the car in front of you. They say one roads are wet, give yourself eight to 10 seconds tweet you and the car in front of you. When cars but drive conditions are good, if you start to fishtail, do not slam on your brakes.
