low of 2 degrees. the clouds will help out and make is not drop quite as fast. a pretty frigid evening, since 4 p.m., below zero wind chills. we will likely see that and i come estimate your bottom out in the upper singles to low teens. we are up to 29 by noon. we will see how long the cold glass and why, coming up here shortly. laura: the bone-chilling temperatures tonight means an increase in people needing warm shelters. kcci's rose heaphy joins us to explain how the storm impacted a homeless shelter in des moines. rose: the snow may be melting away. but tonight will be the coldest night since march. wind chill will be close to zero, meaning the shelters will be full once again. more than 5 inches of snow dropped on the metro, sending people like anthony garza to shelters for the night. anthony: it's really affecting muscles can't really handle it. rose: central iowa shelter and services in des moines took in about 200 people during the storm. since this shelter doesn't turn anyone away, about 50 people slept in the overflow room , without a bed. kevin: as winter goes on and the temperature drops, more people are going to come in. the need becomes greater, obviously. rose: the shelter relies largely on donations. there's a constant need for pantry items to stock the kitchen, blankets to cover the beds, and warm clothes to offer. kevin: we just can't keep enough coats, enough gloves, enough hats. once they come in, they're gone like that. rose: donations and services people say they're thankful to receive and to call home for the night. virginia: this place is a blessing for people who have nothing. at least they have a roof over their heads. they're safe and warm. rose: with many more cold nights ahead, the need will continue to grow. kevin: this is just the beginning of winter. so, obviously, we have a long way to go. rose: central iowa shelter and services is currently in need of in studio, rose heaphy, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. todd: des moines water works say s it has now restarted its nitrate removal system. the facility has worked off and on for a record 148 days this year. water works says it was forced to restart it, as a last step in order to maintain safe drinking water. the drinking water currently has a nitrate level of 8.26 milligrams curley. -- 8.26 milligrams per liter. the epa's maximum allowed is 10. the water works is suing three iowa counties in federal court over high nitrate levels. the republican party of iowa have canceled an event. the brown and black forum scheduled for december 3 at drake university will no longer take place. the party cites "unresolved scheduling conflicts" as the reason. the forum was supposed to focus on minority communities. a similar forum by the iowa democratic party is still scheduled on january 11 at drake. hillary clinton and former maryland governor martin o'malley are set to appear. laura: a des moines woman is robbed right in a southside target parking lot. kcci's jason rantala explains how she took action. jenny: i've lived over here almost all my life, and i've never had anything happen to me ever. jason: 2:00 friday afternoon, jenny speck is unloading birthday presents outside the target at southridge mall. when, out of nowhere, a man grabs her purse and takes off. jenny: i really had no other thought in my head but just to go get him. jason: jenny decides to run after him, chasing the robber to his car. police say she got between the driver's side door, when he threw her purse back out, before driving off. jenny: maybe i felt like i could take him? i don't know. jason jenny got her purse. : but the suspects got away with her car keys, house keys, and driver's license. jenny went full-speed after the thief -- baby and all. jenny: yeah, 28 weeks. soon. jason: jenny and her baby boy are fine. she is left with some bruises from the suspect's car hitting her in the back as he drove away. jenny: i would hope that you would have something very wrong inside your head to go after someone that was carrying a child. jason: jenny says staying in shape helped with confidence in chasing him down. she is a kickboxing instructor, after all. still, she considers herself lucky. jenny: i have very little doubt that there will be a good justice to the ending. laura: despite the suspect taking her keys, jenny says she's not worried. because he will be caught. police say the suspect is a white man in his late 20's with short brown hair, possibly wearing a red shirt. if you have any info, call des moines police. todd: the streets of belgium are filled with armed soldiers on patrol. this weekend the country raised , its terror alert to the highest possible level, calling the threats "serious and imminent." at least one suspect from the paris attack is still on the run, as well. he was last seen crossing the border into belgium. cbs correspondent tina kraus reports the government is even shutting down the brussels metro transit system this weekend. tina: police and soldiers are on and subways are closed, as authorities warned of a terror attack, similar to the ones in paris. officials believe suspected attacker salah abdeslam may be in brussels. french police stopped him at the belgian border the morning after the paris assault, but let him go. authorities in turkey arrested three suspected islamic state militants saturday. one who reportedly scouted sites targeted in the paris attacks. leanna vingadassalon paid tribute to the 89 people killed at the bataclan theatre. she says we still live in fear, knowing that an attacker is still out there. two women who escaped the massacre here in paris almost ended up at this restaurant. but they chose a cafe across the street instead. they say that gave them the extra seconds they needed to survive. the friends heard gunshots and ducked under their table outside, just before a gunman opened fire on the cafe -- killing five people. the terrorist's gun apparently lives. parisians are mourning those who died at memorials around the city. american ricki stevenson lives in paris. ricki: two and a half million people in paris, and everyone has been touched by those 130 people who lost their lives. tina: she came with friends to deliver a message. we shall have no fear. we're gonna let it shine. we're gonna let it shine. tina: tina kraus, cbs news, paris. todd: the man police believe planned the attacks was killed in a raid at an apartment in a paris suburb wednesday. along with his cousin and another person, who police have not yet identified. laura: the government of mali has declared a state of emergency and three days of national mourning after a violent siege on a luxury hotel. 20 people, plus 2 gunmen, were killed friday. an african jihadist group is claiming responsibility. the national police are guarding the raddison blu hotel tonight. chicago's tallest skyscrapers. one person was injured as flames shot out of the john hancock center. thick smoke and fire could be seen pouring out of a window on the 50th floor. the tower houses offices, shops, and residential units, along with a popular observation floor for tourists. well, snow sledding -- many iowans taking advantage of the first snow fall. the great spot you can take some runs down the hills. todd: the real-life story of the chilean mine disaster is now a new movie, called "the 33." john pascuzzi digs deep for his review tonight. laura: aiming for the top, iowa wants more than juts a conference title. takes us inside the locker room.le are sick and tired of establishment politics, and they want real change! along 235 appeared to be all clear. one thing to keep in mind. there could be problems overnight and sunday morning as things refreeze. and we got enough snow yesterday to allow sledding at waveland golf course. todd: we spotted plenty of hearty souls willing to brave the cold to get in a few runs down the hills. of snow to allow sledding. a few dogs even took part. people say they're happy for the snow to be back. jason: the hills are pretty good. this is actually my first time sledding, probably in my life. so this is like the biggest hill i've been on. todd: if you want to go sledding, waveland posts signs at the gates when sledding is open. and of course, it is free. laura: oh, how quickly things can change for us here in the midwest. friday morning, picking up leaves. and then, up to 14 inches of snow falling in parts of sioux falls, south dakota. and while the wintry weather is a thorn in the side of many, it's good for snow companies. they're working 24 hours a day to clear up roads and driveways. todd: and our winter weather moved right to chicago as the , region is blanketed by an early-season snow storm. about 7 inches fell at o'hare airport. hazardous conditions forced the cancelation of more than 500 flights. chicago's norther suburbs got more than a foot of snow. laura: 20 inches, oh my gosh. now to meteorologist jason sydejko. round one is done. but we the chance to see more rain or snow in the eight-day forecast. jason: we have chances, yes. thanksgiving, a chance for a bit of rain. aside from that, though, we will be on the warming trend. so, hopefully, you can get out during the day monastery the morning, and enjoy the snow we have going on out there. we sent this shot of the snow man i think it might have been eating a chocolate bar and spilled it on himself. beautiful to see these snow creatures coming to life. continue to show those shots, i will post them. another spectacular view in the sky this time. you can spot the space station at the 6:27 in the morning. yes, it will be absolutely frigid. take your hearty self if you are wind chills in the single digits, below zero for northern portions. the rest of us in single digits and above zero, and absolutely frigid evening and morning for us. 70 degrees right now with a light breeze at seven miles per hour. you can see cloud cover making his way from the west, even if you snow showers for portions of south dakota. i think we will not see them here, but the one thing these clouds could bring, actually warmer temperatures. we are dealing with the night something called radiation old:. we have light winds and a fresh pack of snow, that really effectively radiates the heat we gain during the day off into space. that means we cool off greatly at the surface as the clouds roll in. we get re-radiated to the ground, so that helps to keep us warm. if you're hoping for a little warmer morning, hope for cloud cover. i think we will have a little bit read but any really patches in that will help the temperature drop. 32 by 3 p.m. tomorrow. you see futurecast ringing in the cloudy stuff for a bit. still think we will drop into the low teens. so plan for cold as you wake up, know that eventually we will warm to around freezing or so. which may not be a consolation to many. you can see futurecast continuing to bring in at least some light cloud cover. as we head to the morning, any snow will stay off to the north. we are not talking snow, thankfully. we have enough of that. but we will see an increase in temperatures over the next couple of days. tonight, though, not the case. upper single digits to low teens. we are writing that for a few. 32 is the high tomorrow, you see cold sticking in place. upper 20's off to the west, and eventually we tap into that air mass and bring warmth throughout the state. that would take us a while here. anytime you get that much snow, it causes a refrigerator affect. you plenty of sunshine to melt that all through tuesday. 30 to bring in showers late in the day on wednesday. hopefully, that will stick around for your evening, and we could even see snow on the time that wraps up on friday. next weekend, starting to warm up again. laura: tonight's movie review comes straight from the news headlines. todd: john pascuzzi finds out how well "the 33" portrays the chilean mine disaster. john: it's the true story of 33 chilean miners trapped more than 2000 feet underground that, in 2010, had the whole world watching. it's "the 33." antonio banderas stars as mario sepulveda. who, along with fellow miner luis urzua, lou diamond phillips, lead the others in a fight for survival after the collapse of a gold and copper mine deep inside chile. with little food and water, the exhausted miners come to grips with the reality that this is more than just a mine collapse. they literally have a mountain outside world. >> that is a big rock. john: the real-life story of "the 33" is truly remarkable. and the film, itself, is filled with hope, heart, and humor. and although, at times, a bit over-dramatic, banderas and company give us the true grit of men overcoming impossible odds to stay strong and stay together. coming up on december 4, we will have full coverage from indianapolis at 8:00 right here. we will be live from indianapolis previewing the big game as the hawkeyes compete for a big 10 title and possibly beyond. speaking of, michigan state one on a last-second field goal. check out the score. if michigan state beats penn state next week, they will win the east. ohio state lost also opens the door for iowa to climb up. oklahoma state gets the first loss, the fault of baylor. there at the bottom of your screen. the oklahoma sooners are about eight minutes away from knocking off tcu, 30-13. well, coach paul rhooads' job security will be a hot topic this week. with the way saturday's game at kansas state ended, the noise is only getting louder. the game could not have started any better. mike warren, 76-yard touchdown. he had 195 yards on the day. and the cyclones led 35-14 at the break. with a minute and a half left, kansas state cut it to a 7-point game. but isu had the ball. mike warren loses it. kansas state cashes in. charles jones ties it up at 35-35. and just like that, the lead is gone. 20 seconds left, isu has the ball deep in their own territory. instead of going into overtime, they try to make something happen and win in regulation. joe lanning loses the ball. that last fumble cost the game. jack cantele nails the 42-yard field goal. kansas state makes a miraculous comeback 38-35. , they scored 10 points in the final 42 seconds. they stun iowa state, unable to get the win on the road. so the final game of the season at west virginia. 11 a.m. saturday on fox sports west virginia knocked off kansas saturday, 49-0. that should be 3-7 for the iowa state cyclones. michigan state won at ohio state on a last-second field goal. uni took on siu in the regular season finale. check out the return by makinton dorleant. this game was a blow out. aaron bailey had 5 totot touchdowns for the panthers. it's a 49-28 win. the fcs selection show is at 10 a.m. on espn. uni is likely to get an at-large berth. let's bundle up for some naia playoffs. grand view hosted a round one game saturday against lindsey wilson. that's a school, not a person. grand view up 3-0. derek fulton rolls out and finds aaron schultz in the back of the end zone. it was 13-13 at the end. here's the last play. joey nissen, the pride of collins, connects on a 31-yard er to win it. escapes 16-13, on to round two. a stunner in the snow. drake has had a rough season. they ended that today at home by hosting undefeated dayton. drake had a 21-17 lead with two minutes left. how's this for an exclamation mark? conley wilklins, a 60-yarder! into the end zone. drake ends the year with a bang, taking down undefeated dayton. a final record of 5-6. to the court, where northern iowa got to host number 1 north carolina. it was the tar heels that had reason to be scared. this is uni we're talking about. kansas can tell you all about them. the tar heels' all-american marcus paige is a linn-marr native. the game was scheduled, in part, so he could play in his home state. except, he has a broken hand. he dressed up but did not play. they could have used him. wes washpun takes the elevator to the top. throws one down. don't hurt them, wes. right before the half, washpun launches one from midcourt. he had help from a magic, purple arrow. uni was down 16, but went on a 29-8 run. matt bohannon puts uni up with the three. and they win 71-67, uni. rush the court. uni knocks off number one team, and they are partying. drake had an ugly lost at home to umkc 79-73, despite 23 from reed timmer. and on the de-league iowa energy wins a tight one at home, 85-83. they are 3-0, host fort wayne sunday at 4:00. how about some hockey?
