good afternoon. thanks for joining us. police say domestic violence cases are one of their most frequent calls, with one in four women impacted sometime in their lives. the son of amy fraaken tells us that the shooting happened after she announced she wanted to leave her husband. des moines police say 47-year-old barney fraaken shot the two and then tried to shoot himself. his step son says he doesn't think his step-father had ever been abusive to his mother, but was nervous when he bought several guns. fraaken is now in police custody in the hospital where he's being treated for a self-inflicted gun-shot wound, but he has not been officially charged. we've tried to get an update on his condition, but so far, hospital officials have not responded to our request. and we're also waiting to learn the condition of, and possible charges for, the man behind the wheel of a deadly accident monday morning. the crash happened in the 600 block of 35th street. 22-year-old scalicity angel perez was killed. at last report, 24-year-old troy mure junior is in mercy medical center. the force of the crash broke a power pole at it's base, destroying the car. excessive speed and impairment are being investigated as contributing factors. new at noon. a warning for commuters in ames. a watermain break could tie up traffic tonight at a heavily traveled intersection there. city crews tell us the break at 18th and grand will close one lane in the area for the rest of today, and possibly tomorrow. it sounds like it could be wet on thanksgiving. let's check in with frank for look at your travel forecast. frank: things have been changing. we have been spoiled with warm temperatures, enough that we have been able to melt snow. 41 is what we check out at the des moines airport. notice it is cooler to the north, they have more snow on the ground around mason city and fort dodge. low 40's, melting snow out of the south and southeast. the dew point is at 31 so it will be breezy. temperatures climb into the low 50's i the middle portion of the afternoon. 5:00 p.m., -- 8:00 at 41. like you said, things changing in time for thanksgiving. rain moving in. temperatures cool down but it's not bad into the 40's, could see an isolated mix possible. mollie: the city council has approved reconstruction of a landmark bridge just south of downtown des moines. a preservation group has raised $2.3 million to help save the jackson street bridge. it was closed more than 2 years ago after engineers cited deterioration and safety concerns. if all goes as planned, the bridge could reopen to pedestrians and bicyclists within the next year. iowa hawkeyes fans will be anxiously awaiting the release of tonights college football playoff rankings. this weekend, the hawkeyes jumped to number three in the latest ap top 25 poll. iowa is just one of two undefeated teams in college football right now. the rankings will be released tonight at 8:00 p.m. on espn. if the hawks can crack the top four, in would put them on track to a possible national championship. turning to commitment 2016 news a new quinnipiac university poll , shows some surprising shifts among the republican candidates for president. the poll among likely iowa gop caucus goers shows texas senator ted cruz slicing into donald trump's lead. even still, trump still leads by 2%. ben carson has slipped to third with 18%, while florida senator marco rubio continues to gain ground. he came in with 13%. rand paul, jeb bush and carly fiorina all in the single digits. nbc has reached an agreement with four republican presidential candidates for equal airtime following donald trump's 12-minute appearance on "saturday night live." john kasich, mike huckabee, jim gilmore, and lindsey graham will each get 12 minutes of free advertising on 18 nbc affiliate stations in new hampshire, south carolina, and also here in iowa. the network came up with the agreement in compliance with fcc regulations. turning to world headlines, russian president vladimir putin is threatening significant consequences after turkey shot down a russian fighter jet. the plane was flying near turkey's border with syria, where russia has been carrying out bombing campaigns against isis. cbs's tina kraus has the latest from london. tina: russian president vladimir putin lashed out at turkey for shooting down one of its fighter stab in the back by the terrorists' accomplices." video of the incident shows the doomed jet just after a turkish fighter struck it with an air-to-air missile. the jet crashed in a fireball just inside syria, two crew members were seen parachuting to the ground. a syrian rebel group says it fired on the pilots as they descended and at least one was reported dead. the fate of the other is not known. turkey says the russian jet ignored repeated warnings, a claim backed up by the u.s. military, which was monitoring communications. >> yeah, we were able to hear everything that was going on. obviously, these are on open channels. >> it was flying at a height of 6000 meters, he said, one kilometer from turkish territory. our flyers posed no threat to the turkish republic. russia backs syrian president bashar al-assad, and has been flying missions against insurgent groups in syria since september. putin says the incident would for his country's relations with turkey. tina kraus, cbs news, london. mollie: turkey has asked nato to hold an emergency meeting today to inform allies about the incident. russia's foreign minister has canceled a visit to turkey scheduled for tomorrow. he also issued a warning to russians not to visit turkey. secretary of state john kerry arrived in jerusalem today to meet with with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. kerry says they are focusing on working together to push back against terrorists. he says that includes both concerns about syria and reducing the recent violence in israel. kerry also condemned the wave of terrorist attacks on israeli citizens. at least 95 palestinians and 20 israelis have been killed since october. back here in the u.s., a chicago police officer has been charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a black teenager. the charges announced today come as the city prepares to release a squad-car video of officer jason van dyke shooting times in october of last year. people who have seen the video say it shows mcdonald armed with a knife and walking away from officers. the video then allegedly shows van dyke firing multiple times after the teen falls to the ground. a helicopter crash at fort hood, texas killed four crewmembers yesterday during a training mission. an investigation is currently underway. no preliminary information was given as to what may have caused the crash. >> it was written in 1967 and is a companion piece to a christmas memory which is a show we produced years ago. it takes place around thanksgiving and it's perfect for this time of year. obviously that was a major decision in doing it. but it's basically lifted right from the page, it has not been adopted into a play that i know of. they made a television movie about it before but in this case, it's just me on stage narrating the entire piece. i become different characters in the story as it unfolds. mollie: tell us about the characters. >> the main character is buddy, he is somewhat biographical. his elderly cousin is his best friend and their relationship is kind of talked about a lot in the story. in this particular story, but he is dealing with a bully at school. miss sook convinces him or tries to convince him to invite that bully to thinks giving dinner and he has to deal with that. mollie: why, what is her goal? >> she wants him to be happy and be able to go out. she doesn't think he will be able to do that unless he comes to terms with the bully. mollie: did you and someone else actually work on this to turn it into a play? >> yes, ethan peterson is the director and i am the performer and j was our wonderful set designer who laid off this wonderful set. story, ethan and i collaborated to decide when it would be appropriate for me to jump into character, when it would be appropriate for me to maybe observe the character from outside. there's a lot of jumping back-and-forth. i speak in at least half a dozen different voices. not that i'm trying to mimic the characters but they are budduyy's recollection. mollie: what can we take away from it in this day and age? >> the whole notion of bullying is something that has gotten a lot of headlines, so there's that element. i think trying to understand our rivals. there's a lot of people that seem to want to yell and scream at each other all the time in the story, sook is encouraging him to have dialogue with the bully instead of creating a monster. mollie: opening tomorrow through sunday, had we get tickets?
