the court dismissed an appeal, filed by former division of criminal investigation supervisor larry hedlund, saying it wasn't filed on time. today, jurors in the first-degree murder trial of a man charged in his wife's death learned about her injuries. alexander fazzino is charged with first-degree murder in emily fazzino's 2012 death. he told police that he found emily submerged in a bathtub. the doctor who performed emily's autopsy testified she had bruises on her forehead, arm, thigh and neck, and a bump on her forehead. the doctor also said emily had bruising on the inside of her throat, which could be from strangulation. the doctor didn't find any definitive signs of drowning. steve: a father will spend the rest of his life in prison, after being convicted in the death of his three-year-old daughter. 26-year-old charles hall was sentenced last week, in the 2015 death of janyiah hall. the girl was found unresponsive at hall's bedford home, last may. a fort dodge man has been given another man in a tavern parking lot. 22-year-old torre mosley was sentenced yesterday, after pleading guilty to multiple charges. mosley admitted to shooting 25-year-old damal clayton last november, outside sneakers eatery and pub. a northeastern iowa man is dead, after his handgun accidentally fired and hit him in the leg. it happened around 12:30 this morning in elk run heights. investigators say 45-year-old martin lawrence returned home from work and dropped the gun, as he got out of his vehicle. it hit the ground and went off. the bullet entered his leg and traveled upward, causing internal injuries. stacey: warren county voters get to decide whether to approve a tax that would raise their sales tax by 1%. kcci's rose heaphy is just back from warren county. rose, what did city leaders say about how a local option sales tax would impact them? rose: stacey, i spoke with officials from carlisle. they say local option sales tax could give the city funds it needs to improve. they say a small increase could andrew: as a smaller city, we're just not able to keep up with those expenses. rose: to carlisle city administration, a local sales option tax -- or lost -- would help with city improvements. andrew: it's an investment. we can help with those expenses, and we can see those services improved. rose: currently, the sales tax in warren county is 6%, or $.06 of $1. the local option sales tax would increase it by 1% -- making the total tax $.07 per $1. if lost passes in carlisle, the city could bring in almost $190,000 a fiscal year. andrew: 50% for public safety, and that is our police and fire. and 50% for streets and sidewalks. rose: street projects, such as improving this intersection with highway 5, that sees more than 20,000 vehicles a day. the tax would directly impact retail business owners, like kelly wentzel. kelly: i know it would help the community, but it may affect me. rose: at his truvalue hardware store, the tax may just be a few pennies to customers. but he says, it all adds up. million in sales. that's $10,000 that you're going to have to come up with. rose: city leaders say voters should focus on the long-term impact. andrew: it's important for them to make that decision, to whether they would like to see things improve in their community and allow their city to grow. rose: voters in warren county can send in their absentee ballots, or vote on the issue at polling centers on tuesday. if the local option sales tax does pass, it would go into effect on july 1. stacey? stacey: west des moines is drafting its first ordinance regarding solar panel installation at homes and businesses. the ordinance would dictate where the panels could be located, and could require screening to shield their view from neighboring properties. green energy advocates say the new rules could limit expansion of clean energy in the community. steve: it is really nice out there today. meteorologist kurtis gertz is therek with the update. i do want to point out early tomorrow morning, it is going to be 32 at 7 a.m. noon is 59. 4:00 p.m. is 63. wind picks up out of the southwest, little cooler to the north. highs on saturday from 56 and 40 odd, 60's from ames. though southwest wind 15-25, gusting to 28. but again, those highs in the 60's with all of that sunshine. a boundary moves through on sunday comedy some sprinkles around that. wind shifts around, but it will get higher. still at 56. steve: thank you, kurtis. / steve: with the warm weather headed our way this weekend, it is easier to starting thinking about summer. des moines parks and rec says more than 100,000 people will use the city swimming pools during the warmer months. it expects about 2000 people to sign up for swimming lessons, centers. that means hundreds of employees cashiers and dock attendants. but the highest demand for this season is for swim instructors those who are interested need to complete a certification course. that's available in mid-march. jen: you wouldn't think that, in february, that it's time to be thinking about a summer job, but it is. steve: applications for seasonal aquatics and park program positions are posted online. stacey: sad news for doughnut-lovers. we've learned that donut king on grand in west des moines has to close by march 20. the building is going to be torn down, to make way for new development. owner lou king says he hopes to reopen somewhere else. a customer has started a go fund me page to help pay for the new location. steve: lou makes a good doughnut. unicorn sighting! stacey: plus, protection from abuse order. how that may have triggered yesterday's deadly workplace throws his support behind donaldternet speed from centurylink, a family of four can all be online at the same time, streaming, gaming, or downloading movies. yeah, the internet's great, but i think hair and makeup went a little too far. yeah, that's not working. i much prefer the two-day beard, horn-rimmed glasses, just-slept-in-his-car kinda thing. yeah, i miss the rumpled crazy uncle look. okay. be "paul giamatti." that's the essence of this role. feel like a hollywood insider announcer: this is iowa's news leader. this is kcci 8 news at 5:00 with steve karlin, stacey horst, and chief meteorologist john mclaughlin. steve: making news right now, an hours-long standoff ends with five people dead. four people in a home in rural washington state, before turning the gun on himself. a sheriff's deputy says the gunman called 911, saying he shot and killed his family. one survivor has been taken to the hospital. new details tonight about a possible motive in yesterday's workplace shooting in hesston, kansas that left three people dead and 14 others injured. authorities say, shortly before opening fire, shooting suspect cedric ford was served with a protection from abuse order -- in the factory, where he worked. ford left work, after receiving the order. he opened fire from his car, hitting someone in a vehicle. he then shot another driver and stole a car, before heading back to work. ford shot one person in the parking lot at the excel industries plant, and another 14 inside, before hesston police chief doug schroeder shot and killed him. sheriff walton: he had to stop that threat. you've got 200-300 people in there. luckily, 200-300 people came out. armed with an assault rifle and an automatic handgun. investigators are trying to figure out how he got the weapons, because he did have a criminal record. stacey: a big endorsement for donald trump. after a combative republican debate last night, the gop front runner picks up support from a former opponent. kcci's aixa diaz is live in washington. aixa, new jersey governor chris christie says he made the decision yesterday. aixa: chris christie says donald trump is the strong, tough leader this country needs. gov. chris christie: i endorse he and donald trump for president of the united states. [cheering] aixa: chris christie, who dropped out of the 2016 race earlier this month, says donald trump is the only candidate who can beat hillary clinton. that's why the new jersey governor is now backing the gop front runner. donald trump: when you're in number 1 place for a long period of time, the endorsements are coming in. but the one i was really happy with is this one, right here. pay $1 million in a judgment. mr. trump: that's wrong, that's wrong. aixa: the endorsement comes after a heated gop debate, where many of the attacks were aimed at trump. marc: there's been no evidence that any shot taken at donald trump has hurt him in the past. and we'll see now, as the nomination gets more and more realistic, whether that changes. aixa: campaigning in super tuesday states today, marco rubio called trump a con artist, while ted cruz criticized trump's debate performance. sen. rubio: it's time to pull his mask off, so that people can see what we're dealing with here. sen. cruz: i think donald trump had a tough night. marc: it's all about getting votes. and whether it translates into votes on super tuesday or not, well, that remains to be seen. aixa: more than 500 delegates are at stake for republicans on super tuesday, with texas being the biggest prize. live in washington, aixa diaz, kcci 8 news. stacey: republican senator lindsay graham says his party has gone absolutely crazy. sen. lindsay graham: the most dishonest person in america is a woman. who's about to be president. how can that be? my party has gone [bleep] crazy! stacey: graham spoke to lawmakers, aides, and journalists in washington last night. he says the gop has lost all semblance of sanity, by embracing donald trump. the south carolina senator predicts an inevitable loss in november, if trump is the nominee. well, democrats vote in south carolina tomorrow, in the state's open primary. it's the final contest before super tuesday. poll numbers in the palmetto state predict a blowout win for hillary clinton. the but, nationally, bernie sanders is closing the gap. new poll numbers from "business daily" show the race virtually tied. steve: meteorologist kurtis gertz is back. this has to be a fun forecast to give. kurtis: beautiful out there, going to get better for the weekend read in the upper 40's. but it just feels better than that. fairly dry, cold to the north in mason city. there are 30's along the mississippi river valley. but near 50 presently in lamoni. crystals clear, do not expect a big warmth on saturday morning. sunny skies at 7 a.m. as the sunshine comes up at 6:53. but we will top out in the 60's. should be a forecast high of around 63. so a nice warm up on the way. hope you have a chance to get out and enjoy it. we have morning clouds, moving out quickly. there is one little band of high clouds that will move through tonight. they moved through as the night goes along. but by tomorrow, they should be out of here. we see nothing but sunshine. look at these temperatures. 60 in st. louis, minneapolis. chicago has sunshine at 53. western nebraska and kansas in the 70's. east, there is a frontal boundary that will drop in here. definitely on the warm side of that. but on sunday, this will bring a contrast to the state with colder air in northern iowa. maybe a chance for a spotty showers or two. what here is futurecast. your timeline, not going to see much for cloud cover heading through saturday. the sunshine a good portion for the midwest. heading into sunday morning, this is the sunshine. notice that front, a few showers to the north. he could see a spotty shower on sunday. wind will pick up behind this front, clouds come in. they move out sunday night. and that looks like monday, which will be a pretty nice day, we will see sunshine early. and in the clouds will push in a little later in the day. the one thing that will be consistent is, we are going to have some gusty wind over the next few days. tonight, 32. clear skies, southwest wind at 5-10. by the afternoon, gusting, warm and breezy. sunny skies, 63 degrees -- just five degrees shy of a record high. sound so good. sunday is 56. but again, northern iowa in the 40's 60's in southern iowa. monday, 60 degrees, still a little windy. but very pleasant. as we go to tuesday, we have a system to watch. i think the majority will stay to the south, definitely something to keep an eye on. gore next week with 30's, eventually back to the 40's. steve: does a couple of accidents to tell you about way out in the western portion of the metro. first one is that jordan creek parkway, three vehicles involved in this one. and another one at 60th street out there and west des moines. a rollover accident that show you down, if you're headed out west. across the greater des moines metro, things look really good right now for a friday afternoon. for the mix master. they look like this -- perfect. where they should be, seven and six. stacey: now, a look ahead to the stories we are working on for kcci 8 news at 6:00. cynthia: i'm cynthia fodor. it's been two years since the f-16s left the iowa air national guard base. see how the pilots are now, once again, flying missions out of des moines to keep our country safe. vanessa: should it stay, or should it go? i'm vanessa peng. coming up, i'll show you why some ames small businesses want the farmers' market moved. andy: big game for the iowa state cyclones. scott reister will have a preview of that. plus and i come final friday stacey: today, in the buzz, hollywood is rolling out the red carpet for the 88th annual academy awards sunday. steve: but amid the preparations, protests are also planned. it's kind of hard to talk about the oscars this year, without mentioning the lack of diversity in then nominees. stacey: protests are planned in hollywood, and across the country, sunday. rapper snoop dogg is the latest celebrity to speak out, saying, "the oscars weren't made for us." steve: "variety" awards editor tim gray says, "the industry needs to change, out of self-preservation." tim: history is at least 20 years behind what television is. and they will have to catch up, if people still want to go to the movies. stacey: as far as who takes home think there will be plenty of surprise winners sunday -- including best picture. after five nominations, this could finally be leonardo dicaprio's year to shine. brie larson is also a front runner for best actress. but there's no clear-cut favorite in the supporting actor and actress categories. >> the calls were coming in as a unicorn running around out there on the roadway. steve: check this out. folks, an escaped unicorn! you heard right. residents in one california community could not believe their eyes, when they saw a tiny unicorn roaming the area. now, it wasn't quite what people thought, though. stacey: the unicorn is actually a pony, named juliette. she's dressed up as the mythical creature for photos with children. juliette escaped earlier this week. and that's when authorities started getting calls and dispatched a search party. juliette led the california highway patrol on a three-hour capture. oh, she is adorable. bringing the bizarre incident to a fairy tale ending. sandra: the call came out, "the unicorn was in custody." and i think, as tense as the situation was, i think it was the comedic relief that was needed at the time. and i laughed, and i cried, and i thanked god. steve: it is good to have her back where she is supposed to be. we will have is a sasquatch sighting. steve: first, it was the kids. now, it's the cats. stacey: this naughty cat somehow dialed 911 last night, from the ames pet hospital. ames police posted this picture on their facebook page. they say officer vander zwaag made the cat promise to never call us again, unless there's an emergency. steve: do not do that, cap. t. we're back next with a final check of the forecast. you're watching kcci 8 news at at's all this nonsense about balls?
