Voters hit the ballot yesterday. The results from siouxlands elections coming up. An increase in car thefts has sioux city on high alert and a preview of tonights Country Music awards all this morning. Jessica rae northwest iowa voters hit the polls yesterday to elect mayors and City Council Members to represent siouxland sioux city has about 47thousand registered voters. But less than 3 thousand people cast a ballot in this election. Woodbury county auditor pat gill says, those numbers werent suprising because he wasnt expecting a large turnout. But after a day of voting, it was mayor bob scott. Who was elected to another four year term after running un opposed. He collected. Two thousand. And 87 votes. Scott. Says he will not run for reelection. So during his last term. He wants to focus on creating more opportunities for unger generatitis. I think thatst the way were going to attract and keep young people in this community and weve done a bad job of that for about 10 to 12 years around here. We need to do the things that young families find attract and we need to continue to work on Economic Development very hard. We need to have jobs in this community for young people, said bob scott, sioux city mayor. Also, on the ballot was councilwoman. Rh onda capron. She was re elected to her seat on the city council. With 77 percent of the vote. Rhonda. Roped in one thousand889 votes. Beating out Thomas Venesky who collected. 554 votes. The first four years were an honor d the next four years is going to be a privilege to continue doing what we are doing, said rhonda capron, city council member. We have a lot of good things happening in sioux city and i am just happy to be a part of it. Capron says during her next term. She wants to coinue working on major recreational projects. Like cone park. And the possible expansion of chris larson river front park. Jessica rae moving now to an important vote in macy, nebraska yesterday. A majority of members of the omaha tribe of nebraska were in favor of all three proposed questions on the ballot when it came to pursuing legalization of marijuana on the reservation. Of the 650 voters, 59 say they support the Recreational Use of marijuana on tribal land. 78 say they support its use fofomedical purposes. And 67 say theyre all for allowing the omaha tribe to grow Industrial Hemp to sell. Though the vote does nothing to legalize marijuana now, it gives the Tribal Council the go ahead to work with the federal government to l lalize it in the future. Jessica rae voters in sioux center were asked to weigh in on a highway expansion project for highway 75 thats been in the elisa raffa explains what changes were being voted on. The expansion of highway 75 between 7th and 9th streets in sioio center has been a controversial topic since the late 90s. On tuesday, residents got to vote on the four Million Dollar project. A 60 percent majority could have the city planning construction with the department of transportation or in another period of waiting until more residents are frustrated with the highway. The city, which supportstshe project, says s e improvements would enhance center lane traffic and attractiveness, efficiency of the roads, and safety of pedestrians. Theres always confusion with people, pedestrians, trying to cross our highway and we feel we can make it safer, and thats what this project is really about. The enhancements that wewee looked at have an led lighting system that flashes s on the inside and the outside lanes. It also has some that its embedded in the roadway, so when somebody approaches and gets into that crosswalk its very obvious that somebody is in there says paul clousing, city manager. While the city says safety are its largest concerns, some residents think the expansion will serve other purproses, like pulling revenue through their largest artery. For traffic flow and all that, i think theres just better ways and other ways to do it than just one single artery through the middle of town says randy widbin, resident along hwy 75. Residents are also concerned about the livelihood of thososwho live along hwy 75. The city says they will work with residents whether they are willing to sell their property or rather be relocated. are we a community that cares for Economic Advancement but also for people who are a part of the community. And i think that seems to be more the issue than just the tax money issue, although thats certaintly part of it says randy widbin, resident along hwy 75. Jessica rae voters in sioux center were not supportive of thososplans to expand highway 75 to five lanes through town. In a ballot measure , 56 of the close to 1,600 voters said they would support the city moving foward with expansion plans. But, that fell short of the 60 needed to pass. Jessica rae heres a look k a few other issues decided at the polls. Sheldon voters approved a 2 increase in the hotel motel tax. The money will be used for Economic Development. That tax is now at state limit of 7 percent voters in onawa approved the implimentation of a hotelmotel tax. The 7 tax just barely won votersupport 235 to 212. Both needed a simple majority to pass. 4 Buena Vista County communities extended the use of a 1 cent sales tax. Storm lake, lakeside, rembrandt and alta all approved an indefinate extension. Jessica rae there was limited elbow space at the State Capitol yesterday people were lining up to share concerns over governor branstads plan to tranfer the states Medicaid Program to managed care organizations. A committee of lawmakers have been arranged to oversee the privatization of medicaid. Concerned citizens voiced their opinions yesterday. There are 560 thousand iowans on medicaid and the roll out date for the new privatized plan, is january first kelsey 1 04 33 we get a little nervous that when too much is transitioned too quickly, mistakes get made, errors get made, details get overlooked. Enrollment packets for medicaid recipients have begun to be mailed out. But so far Provider Networks arent yet in place. There are only 39 Business Days between now and the start of the new year. Jessica rae democratic president ial candidate Hillary Clinton made her way into the Hawkeye State yesterday in coralville. Thats where she spoke to supporters at a town hall meeting the president al hopeful then held a townhall meeting in grinell where she highlighted the importance of ising the minimum wage to 12 dollars an hour as well fixing the va and making sure veterans are getting proper care. The va does a lot of good for work for a lot of good veterans. But it has systemic problems. Those have been revealed and its shameful we have too many veterans w have been left out and denied the care that theyeyeed. I am in favor of fixing it and being really tough about fixing it. Clinton also focused on gun violence and her plans to fight for gun reform if elected prident. Jessica rae although immigration is not something that comes up in local politics very often.
