opinion a hill too much this year. >> for many who lived there. 70 murders in oakland already this year. neighbors are finding some way to end the violence. tonight, they deposit a clear message from someone who has lived the life. >> make a phone call. call somebody you know that's alive. >> reporter: while the emotional energy and spirit may be high, there is much pain among those here for this silence the violence rally. >> my mom was killed when i was one years old. >> reporter: she is 19 years old and she hopes telling her story will help to end the cycle of violence in oakland. >> she was shot in the head while pregnant with my little brother. it affects me to this day. >> reporter: organizers hope by bringing people together from different parts of the community and having them talk that could make a big difference in the long-term. >> our theme is stop and think. we are trying to fete young folks to think critically about what it would take for them to disrupt their own impulses. >> reporter: appearing at this event by phone from prison, a former drug lord who is now doing 35 years and sold those here it is not worth it. >> the reason i want to talk is because i don't want you guys to make some of the mistakes that i made when i was young. >> it takes a hood to save the hood. >> reporter: losing six relatives and friends to violence. >> we need to let the young people know we do have a place and we can be the ones to stop the violence. >> reporter: while there had been no way to know whether this stop the violence event will keep crimes from occurring in the future, organizers say getting everybody to talk openly is in itself a success. in oakland, cbs. a dramatic wakeup call for another east bay neighborhood this morning. s.w.a.t. team and several police officers ramming down doors and breaking window near cotton and thomas avenues off cherry street. looking for suspects in a rash of recent robberies from san leandro. we talked to one suspect's sister. >> they say that my little brother who had a weapon. they were just looking for a weapon but they didn't find a weapon. >> four people were arrested but officers say there could be more arrests. a suspect killed during an armored car robbery has been identified. 25-year-old pierre daniel was killed during a police shootout yesterday morning. the other armed robber, his brother, freddy daniel also wounded, driven from the scene by a third suspect believed to be william fuller. both member are in custody. the police officer shot is recovering from surgery this afternoon. san francisco police are looking for a man who severely beat a fan inside candle stick park. this is a sketch of the suspect. described as a pacific islander. about 6'5" and 260 pounds. police say he is between 25 and 30 years old and at the time of the attack he had a goatee and long curly hair tied in a ponytail. that suspect brutally beat a 26- year-old san rafael man in the men's room leaving him with life threatening injuries. that was one of several violent incidents during saturday's preseason game between the 49ers and raiders. security has been beefed up in response to this. also, alcohol sales will be restricted and fans will have to go through dui check points after the game. >> tonight we know who police say was behind a protest in san francisco this week that caused major headaches for b.a.r.t. and its passengers. when we looked at the list of people arrested we recognized quite a few of the names. joe vasquez reports they may look familiar to you as well. >> reporter: arrests monday night. you recognize him zachery running wolf. today police released a list of names of arrestees from monday night's protest. among them some other notable names. gabriel myers of oakland arrested in connection with the 2005 g 8 protest. two years ago in april 2009, gabriel myers pleaded guilty for throwing paint on a b.a.r.t. board member during a board meeting sentenced to 30 days in jail. the ages of those arrested range from 17 to 56. most serious charge was against 27-year-old ryan ragell busted for possession of an incitdc itary device. another man scampered away before police could arrest him. >> the guys we have seen before those are guys trying to get 15 minutes of fame. >> you're protesting for no reason. you're protesting something that has nothing to do with you. >> reporter: of the 35 arrested most were from the pay area. three from out of state, oregon, nevada and san francisco. investigators are trying to determine what sparked a propane fire that raged for more than a day. a rail tanker fire in placer county finally burned itself out just after midnight this morning. new details reveal that the fire may have been started by static electricity. when an employee was inspecting the tanker, people living in lincoln say they are relieved. >> we have been here for 22 years and we don't want to live with each other so we decided to come here together and take a chance and get ourself and then beat it out of here. >> it could have blown up and blew up half the city. >> nearly 5000 homes had been evacuated before those orders were lifted this morning. up to 29,000-gallons of propane burned off. >> it has changed the way we search and now it is improving the way we surf. it has given some bay area households access to what is, touted as the fastest internet in the world. putting google's fiber to the test. >> reporter: this is the autobawn of the internet. downloading a movie trailner 9 seconds. our website comes up in a blink. >> do you feel pretty special having it here? >> i do, yes. absolutely. >> reporter: christina flynn just got google's ultra high speed internet at her stanford home yesterday. stanford university in red. google fiber is available for free. a few lucky homes in the green area. another city to get fiber is kansas city. a grand experiment involving half a million homes to see what people might create and how it will change their lives. >> it has the potential to make you more efficient? >> and productive, yes. >> how fast is fast? download speeds of around 300 megabit seconds and upload speeds of 150 mega bits per second. here at my house in san jose we pay extra to get the faster internet with comcast still coming in at 13 megabits per second which thought was fast until you realize it was 1/20th the speed of google fiber. that same time 95 megabite movie clip takes four times as long. a sluggish 40 seconds. >> the starbucks here in palo alto is averaging a download speed of about .33 megabits a second. 1000 times slower than google fiber. google promises to share what it learns with the world to do with fiber what we can't even imagine today. in stanford, cbs5. just because you say it does not officially make it a word. that's what dictionaries are for. the newest words being accepted by merriam webster. concerns about hurricane irene. summer has been bloomier than usual in part of the [ male announcer ] don't pay a change fee on top of a fare difference. fly southwest, the only major airline that never charges change fees. a bill that would have let voters repeal capital punishment will not move forward in the s a bill that would have letter volters repeal cap capital punishment will not pass the bill not having enough support to pass the legislature t would have replaced the death penalty with permanent imprisonment. as hurricane irene gears up to rip along the eastern seaboard this weekend people are planning evacuation strat gjss and making contingency plans and a lot of that requires communication but what happens if the sell lar networks go down. chip reed on whether the east coast can stay connected. >> reporter: when a 5.8 magnitude earthquake rocked the east coast earlier this week so many people grabbed their cell phones to call family and friends that networks quickly became overloaded. the situation became so serious that the federal emergency management agency urged the must be to use e-mail or text messages so that emergency officials can continue to receive and respond to urgent calls. nearly 10 years after 9/11 when overloaded cell phone situations crashed possibly hindering the response of police and firefighters the federal government is still search being for a solution. now with hurricane irene there is the added threat of wind damage to signal towers. maggy reardon is a technical writer for cnet. >> winds blowing 120 miles per hour. it can really affect the equipment that's on towers that is exposed to the environment. these towers are high, the equipment is up high. during hurricane katrina over 1000 cell towers were knocked out and there is no federal standard for wind speeds that those towers must with stand. bobby elton is the manager on the outer banks of north carolina where irene is expected to make a direct hit. >> all communications will be impacted pause it doesn't take much to tunnel a tower the wrong way or turn a dish for our communications the wrong way. >> reporter: cell phone companies have spent millions in recent years to upgrade their technology but says reardone not for the worst-case scenario. >> cell phone carriers for them it doesn't make sense from a cost perspective for them to be building their network for the highest demand. >> reporter: of course one option is to use a land line phone but that won't work for everybody. in fact, more than a quarter of american homes today are cell phone only. chip reed, cbs, in arlington, virginia. people that live in san francisco generally don't expect their summers to sizzle but this year it has been a stickly chilly season for the city by the bay. linda yee on the summer that never was. >> reporter: the sights and sounds of summer in survive. except this year it seems like the fog never lifted. the usually crowded twin peaks tourist stop enshrouded in cloud. >> the rest of the country baking we have cool air off the pacific bringing the fog keeping our temperatures running well below the average this year. >> reporter: but cold, damp, foggy weather doesn't stop those convertible sightseeing buses from their appointed rounds nor the shorts wearing tourists who fill them. one family from maine was persistent. >> the sun is out. let's take the ride again and go see the bridge. and we got here and it is worse than it was this morning. >> reporter: but sometimes you just have to get that picture anyway even if the bridge is barely visible. >> we wanted to take a picture but unfortunately we don't see too much. >> you've never seen the golden gate bridge before? >> gnome photos. wanted to see it today. >> and you still don't see the golden gate bridge? >> no. and since we fly back tomorrow we won't see it. >> reporter: it is no laughing matter for bridge maintenance workers. for the first time in its 75 years the entire span is being repainted. except they haven't been able to lift the paint brush because of two fog become very wet weeks. >> reporter: even if it is still fogby they haven't lost a lot of time. bridge workers doing other work, preparing the span. they are going to be using 10,000-gallons of paint a year for the next four years to finish this project and, ken, via good question for you. do you know the name of the color of this bridge? gold. >> it was going to be black and yellow. >> that would look like a giant bumblebee. >> that's why they didn't do it. couldn't call it the golden gate bridge, right? linda yee out at the cloud enshrouded golden gate bridge. >> your own good question tonight. >> lawrence, we have to have cold water and wind to make fog. apparently we have that here. >> abundance of that this year. we have that tonight. low clouds and fog coming onshore. it is grey. right down on the decks, folks. we are seeing dense fog out this. drizzle again out toward the coast -and it continues. the fog along the coast. we are going to see more of that tomorrow but i think over the weekend things look a little brighter outside. by tomorrow afternoon lots of sunshine. 80s and 90s in the valley. as you get inside the bay you'll see 60s in survive, 80s in toward the sap jose area and 60s with the fog and drizzle out to the coast. 57. pacifica 67 degrees. redwood city still 73 in concord at this hour. so, high pressure still holding on. looks like it will start to build back in ever so slowly for tomorrow. so temperatures may actually be just a tad warmer into the afternoon. still a mixture of fog and then plenty of sunshine by the afternoon. and that's going to allow the temperatures to warm up very nicely in most parts of the bay area. south bay we go. those numbers popping up many places up into the 80s, even low 80s. morgan hill 78. out toward the coast fog and 60s out there. some 90s still showing up in many of the valleys. 92 in brentwood. 90 in hiremore. no fog to speak of the intier are i don't -- interior. 70s and 80s by the afternoon. here is the good news. more sunshine coming our way as we head in towards saturday and sunday high pressure building overhead. that is going to squash that marine layer. that means less fog. some warmer temperatures and by sunday we may just get an offshore wind and may clear out the skies by the coastline. still, they will see a little sunshine, something they have not seen much of and i know folks i live out of the coast and i'm telling you what, i can pick my tomatoe in june they have bare hurricane flowered this year because it has been so cool and grey all summer long. >> have to buy them at the store. >> that's right. >> i think so. >> cost a lot. >> thank you, lawrence. >> you're welcome. >> here is something to tweet about tonight. the word "tweet" now has another official meaning. mirriam webster adding 150 words to its new edition. wall street means to post a message via twitter. among the new phrases included. the dictionary's editor says things like helicopter parent, meaning a parent who is overly involved in his or her child's life has become popular enough to be included in the new edition. bromance and fist pump among the new additions. >> attracts tourists, athletes and photographers alike but by all accounts it is a pretty big deal. but exactly how big is it?
