hear her answer. all right, our top story. former president bill clinton could be back home today after having heart surgery. surgeons put in two stints to restore blood flow. clinton was on a conference call about haiti as he was wheeled into the operating room. there's no proof he had a heart attack. >> the goal of the treatment and it will be achieved is for president clinton to resume his very active lifestyle. this was not a result of either his lifestyle or his diet, which have been excellent. he's exercised regularly and in excellent condition. >> he had a quadruple by pass in 2004. one card yols explains why they had to go in, again. >> once you undergo surgery doesn't mean you won't be prone to future arteries. they can also develop disease years after the initial surgery. >> clinton's wife, secretary of state, hillary clinton and his daughter chelsea were with him last night. he's traveled to switzerland and over seas twice. >> it's the south's turn to get nasty weather. sleet, ice and rain from texas to georgia. the national weather service said dallas got more than 11 inches of snow yesterday. in southeastern alabama, sand trucks are lining up and people are getting ready for icy roads. >> if you are at a place where there's city workers or government workers or public workers or police telling you not to go, there's a reason. they are iced over or accidents. >> let's show you a live picture now. it's already coming down a little bit in alabama. this is birmingham, alabama. it's an area you wouldn't think would be armed with a lot of salt trucks or snowplows. here comes the snow there. the weather could be making a mess of your travel plans. delta cancelled about 800 flights because of what you are seeing sticking to the ground. that is what you are seeing live here. airtran, i see their plane exiting to the left of the screen cancelled 32 flights. the city could get as much as five inches of snow today. we'll keep on eye on that. bonnie is in for bob. i call it freak out time in the south. >> you are right. this is freak out time. up to five inches south of atlanta, possibly to north of the city. look at the winter weather advisories. warnings are as far south as mobile, alabama. pensacola, florida. how often does that happen? if you are driving from atlanta to birmingham, mississippi to texas, you are going to encounter heavy know. on i-10, it's mixing with sleet at times. even in new orleans, we're looking at the threat for sleet, ice and snow, not accumulating, but to have it on the roads is unusual. this is a really multifacetted storm. i'll break it down in a couple minutes. snlg thank you very much. the ten americans held in haiti on child kidnapping charges could be released monday. it's when a judge could rule on bail for them. even if he grants bail, they could be required to stay in haiti. back in idaho, the pastor says he hopes they will be allow ed to come home. >> now, we wait and pray, believing in the coming hours we will receive the news we have waited for. until then, we watch for your stories and scurry to the telephone each time it rings. perhaps the next press conference will have the news we have wait ed for each day this week. let's get our people home and do it soon. >> today marks one month since the earthquake hit port-au-prince in haiti. this is a national day of mourning. haitian officials say more than 212,000 people died in the earthquake. new this morning, astronauts from the space shuttle "endeavour" finished their mission. they worked to install an italian built section of the international space station. it was one of their first space walks. there are two more to go. one will add a bay window to the space station, basically. it's a cool video. patrick kennedy will not seek re-election. he says his life is taking a new term. eight terms in congress were enough. he promised to keep fighting for people battling depression and addiction. he took up those causes after admitting his struggle of depression. he's the late child of senator edward kennedy. >> take a look at this dallas high school. a news crew caught it on tape. they said it went on for about an hour. school security was nowhere in sight. one student was badly injured and taken to the hospital. >> he said it was friendly, but people started messing around throwing gang signs and stuff. >> we are concerned several staff members didn't show up today, which obviously was part of the catalyst for this taking place. there wasn't enough supervision for the students. >> 50 staff members stayed home because of the heavy snowfall. i mean, certainly you don't want a brawl. you understand students getting excited, you're talking dallas. how often do you get snow there? in the 50s and 70s. it's cold and the snow will stick. one of the concerns for tomorrow is the black ice that will form. if we get a slight dusting of snow, temperatures will drop below freezing warm, moist conditions in the gulf. it's also pulling down a strong arctic air mass that modified as it comes southward. it's cold and cold enough to keep the snow at the surface. we are going to see snow on the ground in columbus, mississippi. here, in atlanta, georgia, we are expecting snow. imagine if you drew a line through here, jackson, birmingham, alabama, that's i-20. itis a major thoroughfare. it's where we are will see the strongest snowfall totals. to the south, i-20, it's mixing more. here is the atlantic catching a break. no snow hitting washington, d.c., today. 29 in d.c. now. only warming up to the mid-30s. m minimal melting. the windchill making it feel colder. the problem is, a lot of the shoveling and anything you do today and tonight will refreeze and not warm up curious, is it actually snowing there? we have snow falling and winter storm warnings in effect. there's a winter storm warning in macon, georgia. this red line right through this region along i-20. that's where the most measurable snow will be. it's interesting that the snow will be heavier south of atlanta than in the city itself where it's further north. that's because the moisture is catching up through the cold air right through here and notice these advisories go all of the way to the carolinas and they'll be sticking around into tomorrow even into the morning. so this will be a messy bob. >> in louisiana, if you're in new orleans right now you're getting wet conditions, just rain, but if you head further to the west you will encounter some sleet and even some snow mixing in with that towards baton rouge, for example. so changing conditions, changing temperatures. very warm conditions right here along the gulf coast, but remember as low pressure worksst way to the east it's going to do two things. one, pull in the moisture from the gulf of mexico which is warm, moist air and pull down colder air so the changeover is rapid. we'll be looking at sudden bursts of snowfall on i-20, for example, in alabama, in georgia that may come at rates at one inch per hour, and a lot of snow fell in dallas, texas. the record shattered. we have a live picture of dallas to show you, 11.2 inches of snow on the ground. this is what it looks like. we could be looking at chicago. you can see the roads still have plenty of sheen out there. a lot of black ice out there and very dangerous to into the carolinas, into colombia south carolina, we'll see measurable snow and maybe even a few inches that holds true for parts of georgia and in macon, a winter storm warning continues. where we have heavy snow and maybe people in the mid atlantic, a few inches is so bad, but not when you don't have salt trucks and snowplows to remove it. there are a couple feet of snow on the ground in the mid atlantic. today, not much of a warm-up. right now this morning, temperatures in washington, 29 degrees, in new york city it's 27. the windchill factor will make you feel colder. so if you're up early this morning to shovel some snow, bundle up, it's really going to be cold out there and even though temperatures today will climb into the mid-30s, so that's above freezing, what will happen tonight is we'll see low temperatures drop down back into the 20s. so that will cool things back down, robin. we'll see whatever melts today refreeze, and i'm not just talking about the mid atlantic. while you were sleeping, astronauts from the space shuttle endevour finished their first space walk of the mission. two crew members worked for six and a half hours to install a new italian built section of the international space station. it was one of the astronauts first space walks. there are two more space walks to go and one will add a bay window to the space station. a snowball fight in a school yard quickly turned into a real brawl. take a look at this dallas high school. a news crew caught it on tape. they said it went on for about an hour. an hour. school security was nowhere in sight. one student was so badly injured he was taken to the hospital. >> they started something friendly and people get ignorant and started messing around throwing gang signs and stuff. >> we're concerned several staff members didn't show up today which obviously was part of the catalyst for this taking place. there wasn't enough supervision for the students. >> 50 staff members stayed home because of the heavy snowfall. the man who invented the frisbee has died. fred morrison got the i.d.e.a. from tossing around the lid to a popcorn tin in his backyard. he created a plastic version in 1948 and sold the rights to whammo in 1957. he never got rich off the idea. morrison died of lung cancer tuesday at his home in utah at the age of 90. the olympics start tonight and with that team usa got some good news. skiing star lindsey vonn will race. >> this is a big star and they're hoping a lot of people will tune in to watch. vonn has been called the michael phelps of the winter games? is today atlanta will be hit hard and that's a major hub for travel. so let's talk about the delays you're anticipating. many cities are affected. thousands of planes up in the air no problem and many will be canceled today in the southeast due to inclement weather. delays din boston due to wind. dallas has snow on the ground, 11 inches. look for delays there as they clear it off the runways. mobile, alabama, has rain and snow in the forecast. snow is in the forecast for sure there and pensacola, which only usually gets a trace of snow a year has snow in the forecast. so there's an hour delay possible. birmingham and all of these places will likely see cancellations if you have a regional flight in the southeast. so be prepared for the slowdowns today, robin. i'll have more at 8:30 on the winter storm affecting so many places across the southeast and we'll do a wrap-up on the winter storm in the northeast. >> it's freak out time. i want to try to drive. new york's governor is battling rumors of sex and drugs and he's blaming a new york times article that's not even out. clinton is out of the hospital this morning after having heart surgery. he is said to be in good spirits. the doctors say that he did not have a heart attack, but they did put in two stents to help his blood flow get to his heart or help blood get to it. they say that his prognosis is excellent. he's out of the hospital this morning. travelers, you are in for a nightmare today. i hate to say it, but there is a winter storm now in the south. some have been left stranded after delta air lines has canceled 800 flights into and out of atlanta. the city could get five inches of snow today. police say that the death of british fashion designer alexander mcqueen is not being treated as suspicious. media reports say it appears he committed suicide. the 40-year-old was found in his home in london yesterday. mcqueen was known as the hooligan of english fashion whose work influenced a whole generation of designers. good morning. at least i can tell you that it is friday and it's been a long week, i'll bet, especially if you've been snowed in for the entire week. i'm robin meade. welcome. can you believe who is getting the snow now? southern states that missed this week's winter storms are getting ready for their own snowstorm. county officials in georgia, for example, are buying salt and getting salt and gravel trucks ready to clear the roads there. one community south of atlanta has two trucks to do the job and yeah, some of the drivers are concerned. >> two plows. that was not good. no way. no way. if they don't get some help we'll be shut down. >> bonnie schneider is in for bob this morning and she will have the latest on this forecast. a big winter storm in the heart of the deep south in just a few minutes here. police in seattle are increasing patrols in a transit tunnel where a violent attack happened. you may remember this story. a teen was punched, robbed and stopped. two unarmed security guards there were and one appears to try to intervene at one point and not physically. the officers are instructed not to get involved in violent confrontations and they did call 911. he couldn't believe no one stepped in. >> what do you make of this here? don't you override this policy just to do something, hold somebody back, something to save this girl from that beatdown? >> think if you're human. >> right. >> this idea that there's a policy. i try not to monday morning quarterback especially with police officer and securities, these things happen fast. this is sickening. this is absolutely sickening. i would like to think that a lot of people who were not security guards would have jumped in on this and stopped it. the policy aside, its inexcusable. >> four people have been charged in that attack and three of them grabbed the girl's purse, cell phone and ipod during that fight. get the latest on any developments on that david patterson has been battling speculation about an expected "new york times" article. there have been allegations that that article includes -- they should either publish the article or put the somebody after you? >> well, clearly, somebody is. three different media outlets were contacted in the first quarter of the super bowl and they called us before the first quarter could end to confirm about the governor and we have not trafficked on that rumor. obviously, we are not responsible for what other news organizations are reporting. it is not coming from the times. let me give you a list of some of the cities that are expected to see snow today. cities that you would never think of. new orleans, birmingham, atlanta, pensacola, florida? who else, bonnie schneider, in for bob. >> mobile, alexandria, louisiana. a lot of these places that you would never see snow are under winter storm warnings. first off, this weather is brought to you by red lobster. they stretch all of the way from texas to the carolinas and a couple of other cities i want to mention. charleston, south carolina. you don't see snow here too often, but the advisories will continue into the early morning hours and you have moisture from the gulf of mexico and the wrap around effect sweeping down the snow. look at this loop as it plays and you'll see the rain/snow line drop into louisiana. those parishes that never see snow are seeing it rate now. to the north it's below freezing and that's where it's snowing in shrevepo shreveport. you can see that atlanta well in this block of cold air. that's why we're anticipating snow for atlanta with heavier amount south of the city and macon will see more snow than atlanta. here's a look at our forecast and extreme weather to show you exactly what's happening. low pressure travels from the gulf right across the carolinas and south georgia. is what it will look like and we will see snow falling in south carolina and wilmington, north carolina under a winter storm warning, just unheard of to see that in the beach communities there. to the south and jacksonville and florida, it will be rain, but it will it be heavy thunderstorms so keep that in mind for those of you traveling. hattisburg you saw rain this morning and all of a sudden it changes to snow. how do you prepare for that? be prepared for icy conditions on i-10. snowier conditions in the north and the accumulations will also go into charlotte as well into southern parts of the piedmont of north carolina. >> across the mid atlantic, we are still monitoring the snow on the ground and waiting for milder temperatures so it will melt in baltimore, philadelphia and washington, but it is not happening any time soon. the temperatures are in the 20s right now. it feels colder due to the windchill factor and brisk wind is in new england and it feels like it's 14 in boston. >> lows tonight will drop down into the 20s and teens not just in the northeast, but check this out. one of the effects when you have a strong area of low pressure in the gulf as it pull us down the colder air. so we will drop down to about 22 degrees tonight in atlanta. that will keep whatever we get in terms of frozen precip frozen overnight. robin, it will be an icy mess even tomorrow morning. a lot of people are still trying to travel. >> i do not look forward to it. that's for sure. >> >> to be able to just be and not think about their cancer even if it is for ten minutes is such a gift to these families. >> what a great idea. i love that breakthrough women segment. the army won't send a single mom to jail for going awol, but refusing to deploy will still cost her her job. here's an update to a story we've been following. a single mom has avoided court-martial for refusing to deploy to afghanistan. alexis hutch son elected out of her tour of duty because her child care plans fell through. the army believes she never intended to deploy, but yesterday military officials decided to drop the criminal charges. instead hutchinson was discharged and stripped of her veterans benefits. she says she's happy to move on. actress angelina jolie is visiting haiti as a good will ambassador. you know she and husband actor brad pitt have adopted children from three different countries. jolie told christiane amanpour that that is not the focus of her trip to haiti. >> there's been a lot of speculation as to whether you will adopt from haiti, obviously you're saying not now, but will you? is that something that you're looking at? >> i'm -- i'm always open to children around the world for that kind of a family. brad and i talk about that, but that's not what we're focused on that by any means. we're here to see how we can help protect the children in the country and scale up the needs here. >> today marks the one-month mark since the devastating earthquake hit port-au-prince. this is a national day of mourning in haiti. haitian officials say more than 212,000 people have died in the quake. paper or plastic? i don't think we'll see quite as much. but we'll see snow particularly here along i-20 and the south. in atlanta, you maybe will see an inch or two, north of the city, not much, but southward toward macon, that's where you'll probably have to use shovels to get the snow out. we're looking at sleet here. even the panhandle of florida. this is very important to note. here's i-10, and you can watch as this loop plays. the rain changes over to snow with that wraparound effect. so changing conditions, robin, for those that are driving on the presidents' day weekend, wanting to get somewhere because the flights are canceled. be careful out there. these conditions are changing rapidly, and the roads are going to get worse as we go through the evening hours. aisle have more in just a couple minutes. >> thank you. the ten americans being held in haiti on child kidnapping charges could be released as soon as monday. that's when a judge rules on bail for them. even if granted bail, they could be required to stay in haiti while the group proceeds. back in idaho the group's pastor says he hopes they will be allowed to come home. >> now we wait and pray, believing in the coming hours, we'll receive the news that we waited for. until then we watch for your stories and we scurry to the telephone each time it ring. perhaps our next press conference we'll have the news we've all waited for each day this week. let's get our people home, and let's do it soon. >> well, today marks one month since the devastating earthquake in port-au-prince. this is a national day of mourning in haiti. more than 212,000 people have died in the earthquake. we just got portions of jaycee dugard's journal. do you remember police say she was kidnap and held captive for 18 years by phillip and nancy garrido. according to court documents in 1993 she wrote -- they say ten years later she wrote -- the garridos have pleaded not guilty. dugard was 11 when she disappeared. just got a new total from different airlines. airtran is saying that they're canceling 62 flights out of atlanta. dallas at last check said they were canceling 800. can i show you why? here's bonnie schneider. 1,100 for who? >> for delta. that has gone up quickly in the recent hours. >> 1,100. for delta or atlanta, producers? 1,100 just for atlanta. >> you could be in another part of the country, how will this affect me? it will. if your plane's coming from atlanta, you'll be waiting for a while. if you're taking to the roads because you can't fly because your flight has been canceled, keep in mind with the storm, it's so vigorous, we could see sudden bursts of snow, 1 inch per hour. the worst of it will be on i-20, which is from atlanta to alabama and into louisiana. louisiana is just getting hammered with this storm. we're seeing heavy, heavy snow through alabama, louisiana, the southern parishes south of batten ruchlbat on rou rouge. it changes over to sleet and rain. we could see snowflakes before the day is over. here's the low coming over the gulf. you have to remember, the water temperatures still mild over the gulf of mexico. so it's pulling in this warm moisture air. then it's pulling down this cold arctic air. it's a recipe for snowfall that could be very intense at times. and watch what happens as we put the map into motion. the low will work its way cutting across georgia and bring snow to the carolinas. so i'm sure when you close your eyes and imagine myrtle beach or sunshine and beautiful beaches, now you can picture snowfall. because we have winter storm watches for those today. down in florida you'll see strong thunderstorms. certainly no snow, but in northern florida, you could see it in pensacola as well. the thunderstorms are strong working into tallahassee at this hour. the snowfall totals will be carried all the way up to the carolinas, robin, as we go into tonight and tomorrow, over the hoimd weekend and valentine's day coming up. i hope people don't use this as an excuse not to get the gifts, but we'll be seeing a lot of snow on the ground. >> i wanted to clarify. delta has 1,100 flights primarily in and out of atlanta canceled today. that went from 800 at the beginning of the morning up to 1,100 now. that gives you an example how much havoc a little bit of snow can wreak in the deep south. if you do get chocolate for valentine's day this weekend, it may be a healthy treatment oh, how convenient. researchers found that people who ate a chocolate bar a week were 22% less likely to have a stroke than those who don't have chocolate. it lowers your risk of death after a stroke. here comes the disclaimer. more investigation is need. good timing, though. we're learning that toyota may have problems with accelerators for a while. how investigators may have helped the company and foreign investigations. a snowfall fight turning into a real fielt. why some say it was the school's fault. today's salute is from vickie ellis to her baby brother. aaron served in iraq in 2004 and 2005, and he left a little over a month ago to serve in afghanistan. vickie says that aaron is the best brother ever and everybody at home misses him. maybe you have somebody you love in the service. why don't you salute them too. cnn.com/robin. there may have been a break in the 7-year-old death of heather thomas. police busted a man yesterday for allegedly vd child importpo his compute every. yesterday florida police searched for more evidence at his home near where he was last seen and it had his old neighbors talking. >> i never stop and talked to him. they're not a family you notice. >> no, i don't know them. but i know that they left mighty quickly. >> after this happened? is that something that you've looking at? >> i'm always open to children around the world for that kind of family. brad and i talk about that. we're not here for that. we here to see how we can help. >> it's the one-month mark since the devastating earthquake. fishes say more than 212,000 people have died in the earthquake. birmingham, baton rouge, louisiana, pensacola, atlanta, georgia, those are now usually the towns and states you'd hear rattled off when it comes to a snowstorm, but they are today. hi, bonnie, in for bob. >> hi, robin. we have advisories posted all the way to the north and east into the carolinas. that's right. a new winter weather advisory for raleigh starting at 5:00 p.m. and that will go until tomorrow morning for north carolina. the areas in red expecting the heaviest. notice atlanta is not quite in the region. more south of the city we'll see it. don't rule out measurable snow in atlanta. really heavy downpours on i-10. you would with see a changeover quickly from rain to sleet to even snow as you head further toward texas. the wraparound snow is causing problems because you're getting the blast of colder air and bursts of snow. check out the temperature contrasts. all the way extreme southeast louisiana, 60 degrees and then balm, which isn't that far of a drive, 33 degrees. huge temperature contrast. working its way across georgia into the carolinas. it will do that today and tonight. and as it does it will bring dramatic changes in the weather. low pressure coming out of the gulf, pulling down the colder arctic air, so we're getting the colder air as far south as mobile. we'll see meaurable snow into the mountains of georgia, into the areas of central georgia as well. charleston, we'll see snow and the raleigh/durham area a wiwile snow. the heaviest snow will be right into the central part of the southeast. just to let you know the temperatures will drop down below freezing in many locations, so that's going to cause some problems for those of you that are trying to shovel out here into the mid-atlantic. even though it's gets into the mid-30s, we're going to see the lows tonight like in boston where it's 14 degrees when you look at the windchill factor. there's a live picture of boston. charles river is frozen. >> looks like it's covered snow. >> exactly. >> thank you very much. what kind of weekend are we in for weatherwise, huh? >> reporter: well, whistler is not going to be an issue. that's not going to be an issue. cypress mountain, that's where they've had concerns. there has been a rain/snow mix. they'll be watching that closely. we were expecting rain today here in vancouver proper. look at the sunrise coming behind me. >> and lastly, lindsey von, the latest, is she going to race? >> okay. thank you. no thank you for a lot of the travel snarls our flyers are going to see today. the last we checked, delta had canceled 1100 flights mostly in and out of atlanta. bonnie? >> that's right. and air tran 62 flies in and out of atlanta. we now have delays in san francisco and houston, weather-related. let's go to the maps, i can show you where we're expecting delays, atlanta is facing a lot of delays and cancellations. snow could put you back one to two hours. most flights are already canceled. dallas looking at cancellations intermittently. in boston, in the new york city area, wind could slow you down. we have windy weather, particularly in northern new england. in san francisco, i mentioned delays at present, not surprising, it's early in the morning there, the fog is thick, but we'll see improvements throughout the day. while you were asleep, astronauts from the space shuttle "endeavour," finished their first space walk of the mission. two crew members worked for six and a half hours to install a new section of the international space station. it was one of the astronaut's first space walks, can you imagine? there are two more space walks to go. one will add a bay window to the space station. did you forget what sunday this is? well, it is valentine's day. just a little reminder. mr. movie phone also remembers this and he has the lowdown on a movie, whether it is worth a valentine's day present. >> why do you hate heart-shaped candy?
