omar mir sidique mateen. >> may god continue to watch over this country that we love. >> terror in orlando. yesterday morning we were all waking up on a sunday morning and we knew something awful had happened, but we would not know until mid morning how awful it was. good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us here on "fox & friends." ainsley and i are in new york and brian kilmeade is not too far away from the sight of the massacre near the pulse night club in downtown orlando. brian. >> yeah, it's just amazing to think that right over to my right shoulder is the club is, the left shoulder which you will see as the sun comes up, all the
emergency response vehicles, police vehicles, to think there will be one man for three hours who would shoot over 100 people and kill at least sadly 50 and all this would happen by just one man armed to the teeth who has to say the least a dicey background. we're going to go through all of this throughout the next three hours and the news continues to break overnight and through our show. we'll have the latest from the scene. >> thank you, brian. we have fox team coverage of the worst terror attack in america since 9/11. we have leland vittert as you can see there covering the latest. we'll start with anna kooiman and what we're learning about the shooter at his apartment complex. >> good morning to you and stephen and brian. we're in fort pierce, florida, where another major piece of the investigation is going on. the fbi has just wrapped up. they are the ones leading this investigation, although there are local and state agencies who have been involved as well.
they have wrapped up and taken up the crime tape and we're getting our first look at woodland condominiums. this is where omar mateen owns his home and investigators have been combing the scene, looking for evidence, searching his computer, things like that. they were also concerned initially yesterday that there may have been bobby traps. we heard from sheriffs deputies last night that they were allowed to come back in. the scene was clear. you notice there around many cars here and the sheriffs department also said they were opting not to come back in. what's so eerie ainsley and steve, it reminds me so much of san bernardino, you remember the couple left the child to commit their awful terror attack and it was a similar thing with this guy. he left his three-year-old son and i want to show you where we are right now. we're at 107.
that's the apartment that we believe he lived in and he drove 120 miles from fort pierce to orlando in order to commit that terrible and heinous, heinous act. also, i want to show you some video of his father, siddiqui mateen senior. his h being searched by the fbi. we'll show you some video of him because it's been described as bizarre and incoherent by very many of the i want prettiers who have seen it. reportedly, he's showing support for the taliban and fan at that sizing about being the president of afghanistan. he posted pictures of himself touring washington, d.c. and standing next to lawmakers. his father claims the massacre had nothing to do with religion, but he had noticed his son getting angry at seeing gay men
kiss one another. we'll have more from the scene coming up. >> thank you very much. his ex-wife came out yesterday and said that he was abusive. we'll be talking about that this morning. we'll also be hearing from one of his former coworkers who said he had to quit the job because he didn't feel like this guy was safe. >> we should point out in the last half hour, brian, isis radio has referred to omar mateen, they put out a statement, and said he was one of the soldiers of the caliphate in america. that's pretty terrifying to hear caliphate in america. >> that means isis is here. >> yeah, which we already knew and if you think about it too, if you look back to the "new york times" story on wednesday, they said the fbi is beginning to pick up the pace in arresting and detaining isis suspects. remember they picked up their 101st over the last few days. they might have signaled something else that was going on, but for those who were saying we don't know what the ties are, we don't know what the linkage is.
we know after the first divorce and before he remarried, there was a visit to saudi arabia, including one friend who said he got more and more religious as time went by and he might have reached out and pledged legion yans to al baghdadi before killing over 50 people and wounding over 50 as well. >> isis announced three days ago that we would attack florida. meanwhile, this morning, we're learning new details about the deadliest mass shooting on american soil. >> leland vittert is in florida steps away from 50 people lost their lives. >> we know that of the 50 people innocent lives taken, 21 of them have been identified. that means there are 29 families waking up this morning not knowing the fate of their loved ones and will soon get that terrible and awful news. it's about 300 yards behind me where fbi agents are still going through the pulse night club and
they have turned the air conditioning down inside the pulse night club because there are still bodies there. they want to try to preserve them as much as they can for the evidence. we're also getting our first look at the outside of the pulse night club and you can see the ferocity of the gun battle and the holes punched in the side of the night club by the s.w.a.t. team armored personnel carrier as they tried to rescue those hostages trapped inside three hours. >> bullets flying, the people on the floor, on the body, receive the shots and those up, that's the last thing that i saw before i went to the restroom, so that's why i went to the restroom and i pray to the life and until the police came and saved us. >> take you through how this attack unfolded. about 2:00 a.m., omar mateen arrived at the club ready for war with an assault rifle and a handgun and a lot of extra
ammunition. he was confronted by an off duty orlando police officer who was working security at the night club. they involved in a shootout. mateen goes inside of the night club and that's what began a three-hour long shooting spree, hostage crisis, shooting spree, that ended with the s.w.a.t. team. during those three hours, there were a number of 911 calls. obviously victims begging for help and also mateen calling and pledging allegiance to isis. what we don't know is whether this attack was inspired by isis or actually directed by it. >> clearly this is an act of terrorism. you can't imagine this happening in any community. jaj -- i can't imagine it happening in your state or in your country. >> we know isis has been talking about having attacks in florida. has called for attacks in florida, especially during the month of ramadan, their holy month in which they promise
their jihadists extra rewards in heaven as per verse and sick as that sounds. now it's up to the fbi and their forensic teams to try to go mateen's cell phone, social media accounts, email, web history, those kind of things to see if he actually saw any of that propaganda as he was being radicalized here over the past couple of years. ainsley, steve, back to you. >> that's the question, steve and brian. was this link to isis, you are saying and i read this article, that a few days ago, isis did say they are going to attack florida, now investigators are going through his electronics to see if he was connected to isis. >> sure. you know what, it's not like this guy is new to the fbi because he was investigated twice, one time people he worked with heard him say crazy things, yeah, i got connections to terrorists and the second time he actually had a connection to a terrorist. the guy, an american fellow who was down in veero beach, florida, who came and became the
first suicide bomber in syria. >> and one of those guys called the fbi. >> the fbi interviewed him twice in 2013 and 2014. the chopper is ahead. her trying to get clean shot of the building and you heard sirens in the back. they looked at him and they talk to him twice. they talked to him again in 2014, at which time they had did not surveil him, had they been doing that, they would have pick up the fact a couple of days ago he bought a rifle and handgun and was able to get that background cleared which was disturbing knowing there was a domestic abuse charge in his background and already there was suspected radical ties. in that background can check, that did not come up. he became a trained assassin in that building behind me. i don't want to be critical by the fbi.
maybe their hands are tied. this sounds very similar to the tsarnaev brothers who were questioned when they came back. >> people are so scared about being p.c. you see something, you say something. people are scared to say something. daniel gilroy who used to work with him in the courthouse, he actually checked people who were working in the courthouse. this daniel gilroy saw these signs that he saw him being racist and hating women. let's listen to what he said when he tried to tell his bosses. >> did you leave the company because of him? >> yes, i did. that and the company wouldn't remove me from this position. it was toxic. it was -- he started for the lack of a better word -- harassing me and stalking me and
my family started to be scared and i quit the job. >> wow. >> he did quit the job and what's interesting is -- so the shooter actually work security. he worked for this company out of jupiter, florida called g 4 s and daniel gilroy said he never referred to this guy as black. he always used the n word. never gay. a slur. his boss knew about this guy's unhinged behavior where he said he wanted to kill people but did nothing about it because in daniel gilroy's estimation because he was muslim. let's talk about the president of the united states. the president of the united states, to his credit yesterday, quickly referred to this as a terror hit. he unfortunately did not say what it is, which is islamic terrorism. here's the president at the white house yesterday afternoon. >> this massacre is, therefore, a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their
hands on a weapon that let's them shoot people in a school or in a house of worship or a movie theater or in a night club. and we have to decide if that's the kind of country we want to be. >> so brian, the president didn't refer to it as islamic terrorism. neither did hillary clinton. donald trump did. he's going to be joining us in an hour, but with only seven months left in his administration, why would the president break his habit of denial now? >> right. steve, as you mentioned, he did mention about guns. he did mention the type of society we want to be in, but it would be to the president's best interests to rally around the country to name an enemy and a movement to stop. he doesn't have to disseminate and qualify and say not all muslims are terrorists. we all know that. we know isis prides hem receives on that. america will rally around a
single belief. when you don't call things as we all see them, as adam schiff saw them and bill nelson shortly, he's going to be out here, as they see them, it makes people wander, do you have our back? do you understand the threat? because there were over 100 people in that night club, 300 that attended, they see the threat front and center. they love to hear their leader say the same exact thing. >> the president said we needed to stand united together and that's right but what we need as well is some clarity on what we stand together against. >> thank you. >> it clearly is -- >> exactly. >> -- islamic terrorism. brian, did you see the images of the helmet. this is the kevlar helmet that one of police officers, there were 11 officers that were involved in the gun fight that went in to kill the attacker in the club. his face was injured, but his
life was spared because he happened to be wearing this equipment. it's a kevlar helmet and you can see the bullet hole and where it was stopped because he happened to be wearing this kind of equipment. >> also the loebl police had a -- local police had a bear cat and keep in mind this particular night club had one door in and one door out, the same door. they used a military style vehicle call a bear cat. they punched holes in the wall and they were able to use the bear cat to help save lives for people who are being held hostage there. as we all remember it was the administration that not too long ago was talking about, you know what, some of these local police departments have too much military gear and we really need to demilitarize them, although yesterday that stuff really came in handy. >> yeah. when are you ever -- when is it ever bad not to be too prepared? overall, you got to go to law
enforcement and say what do you need? we got all this stuff, we can leave it in iraq or afghanistan or we can give it back to rawmplet -- law enforcement, use it as you must. provide the training and allow them to have the resource. within the next three hours, the local police decided they needed this stuff, they used this stuff. why not trust law enforcement to do lawxt things and let politicians be politicians. isis is picking on us because we're not armed to the teeth. so when law enforcement goes to guide us and protect us, at least give them the equipment we paid for them to have and to me that example should be full screen on everyone's -- on everyone's mind today and everyone's newspaper this morning. >> how many lives were saved because orlando police had the bear cat yesterday? >> yeah. >> brian, stand by. we've got a special guest right now. despite the fbi focusing on the terror ties, an imam says the
focus should not be on radical islam. >> i want to also caution many in the media from rushing to judgment and from, you know, sensati sensationalizing the story, we should wait for information, facts come out from the investigators as a nation, we need to look at this issue of mass shooting. >> the comments, despite the fact that the shooter, omar mateen, pledged allegiance to isis as he called 911 during that attack. >> joining us right now is muslim scholar and author "in the land of invisible women." good morning. >> one intention is completely false. we already know not only did he call 911, but we also had isis recognize him as a foot soldier, and this attack had all of the hallmarks of an islamic jihadist attack. very specific words. this was targeting vulnerable

of an american citizen who claims to follow this ideology. we don't even know -- care what he claims. look at his actions. they speak for themselves. the imam is well intentioned but it is false and it is a retreat from what we have to deal with. >> it is both. it is a hate crime because the radical islamists hate gays. >> it is even deeper than that, because our gay community in the united states and all people in that community have long faced discrimination and hate from many areas. this has a lethal intention. it is exactly the same as lethal intention toward somebody who might be jewish or yizidi. this is a hallmark of radical islamist. it borrows and steals from our faith.

security. they will notice the difference in their wallets. >> he pledged allegiance to al baghdadi before the fight. he went over to saudi arabia. is that afghanistan and affinity for the taliban? >> the administration is underselling the nature of the threat in the united states. the fbi has said there's over 900 investigations in the united states. ten times that have communicated with isis back and forth. it's closer to 15,000. out of the 2.6 million muslims in america, it's about a half of a percent of american muslims or people in this country have communicated with isis in one way or another. it's a frightening number. >> what i think too, paul, the fbi has let us know, james comey we cannot keep up with this volume and velocity of investigations. that's why i'm very hesitant if people are going to be critical of the fbi. what do you want them to do? they are only a bureau that just
might not be big enough at 35,000. >> take a look at what we're dealing with right now. if we can actually embrace, the fact that we're at war, what these guys are doing right now they are going after communications, they are going after supply and they are using the internet against us. they are using social media to recruit, to train and to plan. this is what we see. the fbi can only do so much. there's only so many souls out there and there's a lot more of them. we got to change our thought process. >> you don't have to tell you that some people feel hesitant come out to say i've got a problem with the muslim down the street. suspicious down the block. they don't want to be labeled. is there something we can do not overreact? >> this is a theo logical issue. we're dealing with a belief system that these people feel is divine. they could careless what we think.
you might be embarrassed if you are wrong, but that's a heck of a lot better than the alternative which is if you were right and you didn't say something, embarrass many is the least of your concerns. >> we need an intelligence service in the united states. i would hire many muslim americans who know the culture to help us fight these people. we need to make a change. we have to adapt. >> paul, i'll take the president's side for a second. he said i want you guys to live your life. we'll worry about stopping these guys. remember the israelis, they had that restaurant open hours later and they said we're eating here, we're packing the place. the president is saying don't stop living, ignore this police tape around us here, 200 yards from where 100 people were massacred. what's your thought on that? >> all evidence to the contrary, whatever the president is saying

friends are missing their significant others, you know, a few of them, and just the stuff they are sharing, you know, with us, i'm at a loss for words right now. >> a lot going on in orlando. it's a hub culturally as well. it only makes sense that you have a place with people connecting and we have all these freedoms here, with people that are against that, it makes it a target. >> guys, i think it's going to become quite clear to us. we're going to start hearing and seeing some of the text messages sent from inside the club during the attack and also it's become clear that the 911 calls that the killer was making during the actual hit, when he was killing over 50 and wounding over 100, you imagine that's going to be public, to actually hear even more the horror and give us the sense what it was like in that club. >> yesterday, there was a woman on fox last night and ichs watching, so upset because she couldn't find her son.

president obama did not mention the words "radical islam" in responding to what happened in orlando really stuck in donald trump's craw. in a campaign statement, in his remarks today, president obama disgracely refused to even say the words "radical islam". he should step down. if hillary clinton after this attack still cannot say the words, she should get out of the race for this presidency. they also saw this as much as a gun control. we need to keep guns like the ones used last night out of the hands of terrorists or other violent criminals. this is a deadly shooting in the history of the united states and it reminds us once more that the weapons of war have no place on our sthreets -- streets. donald trump reiterating his ban on a temporary immigration of muslim people, there is no room to be politically correct.

passport machines, they make passports now better than we do. >> yeah. >> so we can't even do that anymore. somebody was saying they don't have a passport, but we have to hit very hard. we have to hit very strong, and we have thousands of people in our country. we have to find out who they are and fast. >> well, what about -- is this the failure of the fbi? i know they do great work, but the fbi was notified that he had a link to a guy who was a suicide bomber in the beach and he had gone overseas to the middle east, he had been trained, came back here to recruit for isis, and one of those individuals that he tried to recruit went to the fbi. the fbi investigated this shooter several times and he still got away with it. he was on lists. the fbi had him red flagged and he still got his hands on guns. he went in and, you know -- >> where's security? >> i'm a big fan of the fbi, but certainly, this does not make them look good. and they had him under surveillance a couple of times, and it didn't work out.

land wherever he's groing to go and kill him off first. my insides kill me that he was able to walk around after three hours and gun these poor people down. >> brian, you have the next question. >> bo, yeah, if i can, ainsley, bo, talk about the decision to go in there with a bearcat, knowing that you're trying to do this surgically in the end, it doesn't work. you have to go in there like a hammer and just whatever happens, happens. and when they do this investigation, how concerned are you that some of these people were killed in the cross fire with law enforcement because they tried to be careful, but in the end, they had no choice? >> brian, you've got the most professional people that are trained with these s.w.a.t. teams everywhere in this country, and they train for this type of day. they train day in, day out. you're exactly right, brian. you've grot to go in there with a hammer. you have to bring in there, you have the flak armor, the kevlar helmets, hey, you're facing a
guy that wants to die. you should help him out real quick and take him out. because all he's doing in there for three hours is shooting people, shooting people, and remember when we had that -- again, i keep going back to paris, they let them percolate in there for an hour, they were able to kill so many people. again, we didn't know if it was one person in there, there could have been other people. that's what the police do. that's why we're there. blue lives matter because the police are out there, and we expect them to do what they do, they're real heros, and they'll go in there and they've got to put their lives on the line to save other people, and that's what these great cops are all about. >> you know bo, everyone is talking about sbog peacy. >> reporter: i'll tell you what, ainsley, hold on just a moment because the police are having a press conference, let's listen in. >> to bring you up to date on the wlatest from here in orlando. we have assembled our team behind us and i'm going to let them individually update what their agencies are doing. so we'll start with the orlando mayor first.
>> good morning. yesterday was the most horrific day in the history of the city of orlando, and yet, i stand here prouder today of our community than ever. we came together united to support families and friends of the victims, we learned of the heroic act of our orlando police department and other local law enforcement agencies as well as our citizens, hundreds of lives were saved during the course of that night. opd and the other law enforcement agency responded heroically. allowing hundreds to escape at beginning of the event and then bracing the wall, killing the bad guy, and rescuing dozens of hostages. the medical personnel that will saved so many lives that were transported to the hospital are certainly heros in my mind today as well as the entire community. and then, we turn it over to -- we begin thinking of the families and identifying the victims which is critically important because i could not
imagine being one of the parents or knowing you're a loved one might be among those that are deseased and having to wait and find out. the fbi did an unbelievable job of clearing can the scene, by 11:00, all of the victims had been removed and turned over to the medical examiner and to the fble. and then they also stood tall and did their job and now, 48 as 49 victims have been identified. 24 can have the next of kin have been notified with more to come. the number to call for families is 407-246-4357, as the next of kin are being notified, we are putting the names of the victims on city of orlando/victims. sop again, i want to compliment
the medical examiner and the fble for the work they did all night long in making the identifications and then notifying the next of kin. and we will continue that process today. again, we will not be defined by the act of a cowardly hater. we will be defined by how we respond. how we treat each other. and this community has already stepped up to do that. thank you. governor. >> thank you, mayor. >> just a few minutes ago, i asked president obama to declare a state of emergency for the state of florida. i did that yesterday for orlando, orange county, and the mayor did it yesterday for cities. when you stop and think about this, you think about we all have to tlibt thank god it wasn't our family, but if you go through that list of family members we have, a lot of individuals from puerto rico, we have a wonderful puerto rican community, have a young lady, a.j. morris that just moved here from hawaii to take care of her
mother and grandmother, individual that works at harry potter, i was just there last week, you think there are people that we interact with every day of our lives. our law enforcement has done a wonderful job. the orlando police department, the sheriff's department, fble, the fbi did a wonderful job of getting the bodies removed frp there and the fble did a great job of identifying the body. this is a wonderful community we live in. this is a wonderful state. we are the best melting pot in the world. 20 million people live here, we'll have over 1 00 million people come and visit here. it's a wonderful place to both live and visit. we're going to continue to work hard to take care of these families and make sure we try to get this community back to work as quickly as we can. right now it's time to grieve for each family member that either lost a loved one or still has somebody in a hospital injured. now i'll turn it over to orlando
chief john mites. >> good morning, i wanted to provide some more information about our initial response and subsequent rescue. many, many people. so again, we had an extra duty off-duty officer working for pulse nightclub in full police uniform. and at about 2:00 we responded to shots fired. he did engage in a gun battle with the suspect, somewhere near one of the entrances. shortly after that, additional officer responded. those additional officers made entry while the suspect was shooting and engaged in another gun battle with the suspect, forced him to stop forcing and retreat to the bathroom where we believe he had several hostages. at that time, we were able to save and rescue dozens and dozens of people injured and not
injured and get them out of the club. things kind of stabilized, based on statements made by the suspect about explosives, about possible bomb vests, we secured everything, called s.w.a.t., and we just set up for an explosive breach on the bathroom wall where we knew there were approximately 15 people in the opposing bathroom to where the suspect was with his hostages. based on statements made by the suspect, based on information we received from the suspect and from the hostages and people inside, we believe further loss of life was eminent, i made the decision to commence the rescue operation and do the explosive braechl, the explosive breach did not penetrate the wall completely, we used our armored vehicle, the bearcat to punch a hole in that wall and to beat a
wall. so there's a hole in the wall about two feet off the green and two or three feet wide. we were able to rescue dozens and dozens of people that came out of that hole. the suspect came out of that hole himself, armed with a handgun and a long gun and engaged in a gun battle with officers. of course he was ultimately killed. so at that time, at this time i just want to want say that the opd officers from the initial responding officers to the s.w.a.t. officers, to all the other law enforcement acted, very heroically and courageous and stayed many, many, many lived during this operation. one officer was struck in the kevlar helmet, right throughout his forehead. that kevlar helmet dp save his life. i talked to him, spoke to him at length last night. he is doing great. so at this time, i'll turn it over to special agent danny banks. >> could you clarify if anymore
victims shot when it was a hostage situation? >> so good morning. i want to talk very briefly about what our primary mission for all of us today is. and that's the identification of the victims and the notification of the family. as you heard from mayor dyer, we have confirmed the identify of 48 of our 49 victims. the last identity confirmation is pending right now. so we anticipate having that name here shortly. a number of those as you've married from the mayor we have notified their next of kin, and that is our 100% priority mission today. as you're aware, the stiff orlando is advertising the names of those victims as we make the notification to the family member. and i'll explain to you very briefly on how that's going. we have teams of fble agents, fbi agents, opd officers that we are deploying throughout the state and really throughout the nation to identify the family members to let them know that their loved one is deceased.
once we've confirmed that, this is at the time we'll post that to our website. sop i ask that everybody just respect the privacy of the family in if and that we will advertise those names of those victims, but only at a time that we can confirm the next of kin as notified. again, that is the primary mission of all of us right now. to notify the family members exactly that one of their loved ones is dead and we will advertise those names publicly to the rest of the community. i'll turn it over to now i believe the fbi is ready to speak, ryan hoper. u.s. attorney lee bentley. >> as mayor dyer said, yesterday was the most horrific day in the history of orlando. the day of the largest mass shooting in the history of the united states, terrible tragedy. first of all on behalf of the federal government, i'd like to
thank our state and local partners, the florida department of laurmts, the orlando police department, the orange county sheriff's office. the men and women these agencies have been working tirelessly over the last day and a half. enbehalf of the federal government, i'd like to thank the governor and all the other elected officials who've been here today for their help, their interest in what's going on here. we're working very closely at the united states attorney's office with our partners and the main department of justice and the national security division, and we're also working, of course, with the fbi and with atf. an amazing amount has been done. just over 24 hours. as has been explained, almost all the victims have been identified. the notification process is ongoing. we've been collecting a great
amount of electronic and physical evidence. there is an ongoing criminal investigation, it is still in the early stage. we do not know yet whether anyone else will be charged in connection with this crime. i do want to let you know that we have no reason to believe that anyone connected to this crime is placing public and eminent danger at this time but there is an investigation of other persons. we're working diligently as we can on that. we have prosecutors as well as teams of agents working around the clock getting search warrants, getting court orders. if anyone else was involved in this crime, they will be prosecuted. and now i'm going to turn it over to the atf, special agent in charge, charged thank you.
>> good morning. first i'd just like to extend atf's family would like to extend a heartfelt, warm appreciation for the extended visit here today. on behalf of the atf, we'd like to say we are here to give you their role in the investigation. we found on the scene there were two weapons on the scene. atf brings a unique capability to the table, we've been able to trace those weapons. the weapons have been traced to a purchased by the shooter. one of the weapons was also the third weapon was also found in his vehicle. we are still working on tracing that weapon as well. we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the victims families as well as the lbgt community. we are working the investigation with a team of atf analysts i,
special agents, we are working together with the fbi and all of our partners here today. we have a team of people here that are able to provide what we can to this investigation. i'd like to now turn it over to the fbi, special agent in charge. >> good morning, my name is paul, i'm the special agent in charge of the fbi's field officer here in tampa which insluds the orlando resident agency and yesterday you heard from special agent in charge, ron hopper who did a commendable job for the fbi. i think one of the things to take away is that event such as this as we learned in 9/11 brings the community together including the law enforcement community as you see everybody represented here, we all work together from the get go. and from the time at 2:00 in the morning when the shooting began, everybody rallied together to work the case as one force. we have a joint terrorism task
force in which all of these agencies representatives just spoke are also represented on the joint terrorism task force. we work cases side by side. i think a lot of the investigation so far has been discloe disclosed to you. the main thing we looked at in the very beginning is the victims. as you heard, there are 49 deceased, 48 identified, family members of about 24 families have been notified. we also have brought down 30 victims witness specialists, and they're there to work with the families to try to get them what they do need. the resources are available. other agencies pulled their resources and brought them down. the fbi has brought resources from the miami needle office. the atlanta field office, quanti quantico, virginia, the laboratory has sent down shooting reconstructionist, and that's kind of the next task in hand. as of last night within 24
hours, all of the victims were removed from the pulse bar lounge and now we're going to be processing it with the shooting reconstruction team to get as much forensic evidence as we possibly can at that point. investigation continues over the night, we probably processed about 100 leads that we're working on by agents and task force officers combined. the task force has been up and running since the beginning of this and will continue to run, that's one of the things that all the agencies will do, send the resources to bear to get the fruit and get it to you as quickly as you can. you have to realize, there's a balancing act. a lot of what we do in investigations may become classified. and can't disclose that information. basically ask for your patience and that you bear with us, we'll disclose what we can when we can and when we can't, it's not because we don't want to, we may be prosecutions down the road, we're not sure where the leads will go. as you know, post-9/11, no stone
is unturned. and at the today as it was then. every terrorism case of investigation's going to be working the same way. no stone will be left unturned it and you'll follow the lead wherever they take us, and brief you as best you can when you can. you'll have to bear with us on that and just trust our adjustment. the fbi has been in existence for over 10le years now, and we've earned the people's trust by working and being straightforward with you, and we don't want to the violate that trust by giving you bogus information that two hours later we have to tell you that information was wrong. we cape you abreast as best we can by giving you accurate information. and by doing that, it may take time to get you this accurate information. with that, just ask you to bear with us as we move forward in the investigation. i want to do like everyone else did and commend the first responders. they save ud lives by responding as quickly as they did. numerous people were brought out alive and unharmed, and many more are in the hospital to
recover. and begin that healing process. and that's another thing that's a bonus for the community, it has come together and hopefully that will maintain and stay the course. barring that, we'll take some questions. >> why has the number changed from 49 to 50? >> i think what some people have been given out at one time is the shooter was included in the number at 50. we don't count the shooter as a victim. so that's how you got the 49, 48 of those have been identified at present. 24 of those families have been made aware of their location. >> clarify one thing, we have a couple more remarks and then we'll do questions. >> good morning. this has certainly been a trying time for all of us, and i can tell you as a native of orlando, this is certainly touching to my family and i have served here in
this community with the orlando police department and now the as the orange county sheriff and there's never really been a time where i've seen where the agencyings at the federal, state, and local level have really come together to work and throughout the night our agencies have continued to work with the fbi. we have great partnership and i am certain that within just a short period of time, all of these victims will be able to be identified and those families will be reunited with their loved ones. that effort is certainly going on and so we have received tremendous outpourings of support from across the country, from our colleagues, and law enforcement, and i can tell you that it's very heartwarming to all of us who wear the badge and caret gun on a daily basis, as i have taught with some of my staff and some of the staff of the orlando police department who responded yesterday to this
tragedy, the men and women were certainly touched by this. many of them saw some carnage that they would never, ever see in any other location. if you think about it, this is not a war zone that we are living in. this is a civilize the society and we had to do with something unthinkab unthinkable. and 50 people, 49 victims and an individual died yesterday and many of these law enforcement officers had to go in and observe that. so now, it's about putting our community, our nation back together and at the same time assuring that those individuals who had to deal with what they saw yesterday are able to come back to work and do their job. and so that's where i am at this point, working with all of our partners to make sure we take care of those brave souls who smonded. so at this time, i believe we're turning it over to the attorney
general is what i was told, is that correct? okay. attorney general. >> good morning. just to update you from last night, we have mobilized 14 of our vimtd's advocates from pensacola to miami. they're all here, they're altogether, they're on the ground. they're working with the fbi, with the city of miami we know now that of the victims, only 24 families have been notified. i know you have this number, but please repeat it 407-246-4357. 407-246-4357. if you're a friend, a distance friend, please don't use that number. that number is for relatives, loved ones, who are still attempting to identify these victims. we are here, we're prepared to help you, we have counselors, advocates, and we also have
compensation counselors who can also aid with funeral expenses if these victims families aren't able to do so for themselves. so today, our goal as the sheriff said, we're working together. this is about unity, this is about bringing the great city of orlando back together, our state, and our country. and thank you again to our federal, state law enforcement officers and governor rick scott for standing strong us with this entire time. thank you. thank you. >> could you clarify when this became a hostage situation. do you believe that the killer's fired anymore shots, killed anymore victims during that time frame? >> no. as soon as it stabilized and the suspect had bare kid kaded himself in the bathroom, our negotiators were talking with him, and there were no shots at that time, so -- but there was talk about bomb vests, about explosives throughout and statements made about eminent
loss of life. and that's why i made a decision to make thentry at that time. about 05:00 hours in the morning. he made that phone call we believe while he was in the bathroom, correct, after the initial victims were shot. [ inaudible question ] >> he was in one bathroom with, we believe four to five hostages. there were people in the opposing bathroom about 15 to 20 people. and unknown when we rescued dozens and dozens of people. we don't know from which bathroom they came. [ inaudible question ] >> not that i'm aware from this side of the club. there's another investigation going on, but nothing from inside the club. >> how would you characterize the demeaner during this entire
operation? >> i would say based on the calls he was cool and calm. when he was making those phone calls to us. [ inaudible question ] >> actually, we had a team of crisis negotiators that did talk to the suspect, was trying to get as much information as possible and they focussed on what we could do to help resolve the situation. [ inaudible question ] >> yeah, absolutely. and let me just say this, i'm surrounded by a great team of people from not only the orlando police department, but the sheriff as well as our federal partners, and the information that i received from my team is that loss of life was eminent, so yes, had to make that decision. hard decision to make, but like
again, i wasn't alone. i did have a team of people advising me, and we all knew that was the right thing to do and believe we prevented a lot of future loss of life and saved many, many lives. >> when he's on the phone, there are reports that he was laughing, shouting, celebrating as he was firing, he proclaimed his allegiance to isis. what did he really say that you know? >> there was an allegiance to the islamic state. there was no laughing as far as our negotiations were involved. >> when will you release the -- >> that's up to the fbi, that's part of their federal investigation right now. >> steve, is there a chance that the people may have struck by friendly fire in the crossfire? >> well, obviously that's all part of the investigation, but i will say with our s.w.a.t. officers, about eight or nine opened fire, their backdrop was the concrete wall and they were
being fired upon. but that's all part of the investigation. [ inaudible question ] >> i have not heard that. [ inaudible question ] >> video surveillance? i'm not sure about that right now. [ inaudible question ] >> because of the -- the scene has stabilized. it was a barricaded, hostage situation at that time. we were negotiating with him. and there were talk of bombs and explosives. now when that talk became of a crisis for us, is when we knew there would be an eminent loss of life that made us decision to go in. [ audible question ] >> he really wasn't asking for a whole lot. and we were doing most of the asking. >> what is that like to make a decision? you have people injured in the club, you'd like to get rescue personnel to help them, maybe
save their life, but you have to make this other decision to wait to make prevent more loss of life, what was that like to make that decision knowing people, might be losing the life because they couldn't get medical attention? what was that like personally for you? >> absolutely. it's a hard decision to make, but it was the right decision to make. our number one priority is saving lives. but it was the right decision to make, i believe, and it was a tough decision knowing that people's lives would be placed in damage, our officers lives to be placed in danger by that entry, but we trained for that. we have some of the most heroic and courageous s.w.a.t. team members around. so they did a fabulous job and saved many lives. [ inaudible question ] i don't know about any third guy or any explosives recovered. [ inaudible question ]
>> we could not determine that based on a conversations we had with him. >> final question. [ inaudible question ] >> yeah, the lounge area, the bathroom, the bar area, you know, dozens and dozens of people were saved when our initial responding officers made that first entry. we got most of the people out of the dance floor, out of the bar, lounge area. like them to call 1-800-call-fbi. 1-800-call-fbi if you have any information about the shooter at all. this is our only -- >> all right. we've been listening to the last 30 minutes to a press conference by an array of local officials down in the orlando area. the mayor of orlando referred to yesterday as the most horrific day in the history of orlando. hundreds of lives were saved however by the action of the first responders. in particular, the fact that they breached the wall using the bearcat, and we were talking earlier with bo, we're going to bring him in. it was a bearcat that punched those holes in there and was able to overt further loss of life. because as the police chief then said, because when they had the shooter on the phone and brian asked the question, what was his demeanor, and he said calm and cool. bo joins us right now from dallas, bo, i'm sure you heard the chief of police say that they felt that they saved a lot
of lives because the guy on the phone, the shooter, was talking about how he had a bomb vest or explosive or somethingike that, and they said they had to use something, and they used the explosive breach and the bearcat to the go in there and save people. and there was more, many more lives saved, but this particular kind of equipment is what we were talking before press conference about how the obama administration's been talking in the past about getting rid of that, taking it away from local police jurisdictions. >> you know, brian -- yeah, as far as the equipment goes, i totally agree, we need the most advanced equipment. in new york city, our police department now under commissioner bratton, they have these mobile response units now with ar-15s in every one of the cars now. we didn't have that before. we have to use equipment, the military equipment is important. look at that the officer was saved by that kevlar helmet. but this is our 9/11.
how many americans are going to die? we've talked on your show many times about these soft targets. what was the ideal disick value of that person? he wanted to die. and he was going to do anything, there's no negotiating with a mad dog. you put a bullet until his head and you know what we got to do, this is more reason why donald trump, who i know 40 years, he's a guy to get things done. we should be hitting it on both ends, military values and slam them over there and also, our patriot act has been dismantled, i think our 9/11 has happened again because they're coming back. and we have to stop worrying about political correctness and start to deal with these people that want to see our americans dead. the economy is secondary. people's lives are the most important thing to protect, americans. and that's why this is a very easy choice whether you're a democrat or republican, who is going to lead us out this abyss? because certainly you have hillary clinton who is there who's going to be just like

that investigation. democratic senator bill nelson of florida. how difficult has this been for you over the last 48 hours? >> well, it's especially difficult for this community, be up they're digging down deep. you should have seen the lines of people around the block giving blood, that's an indication of how this community in their grief process is coming together. >> right. we did find out that 49 victims, not 50, we don't count the assailant of that. we don't have the identities of the why is that? >> the last one could be somebody from out of town. remember, this was an assailant that came from two hours away. he targeted this place, he knew there were going to be 300 people packed in a confined area. and people were coming from all around the country, could be visitors from other states.
>> senator, you're on the armed citizens service, you know about the 9/11 threat, no one has to tell you about al qaeda or isis and no one has to say where's the link to isis? he said it, he called it, he called it during the attack. what should we know? >> after all the dots are connected, what this is going to be is isis-inspired plus a hate crime. the anti-gay. either one of them is terrorism. and what terrorists do is to try to inflict fear into others to get their way. and that's what this community is standing up tall for the rest of america. >> and we saw the israelis rebuild that cafeteria, hours after they were serving again. i think it's important when that club is time for the club to hope open, they should open. however in the big picture, americans are concerned about that cell phone. they're concerned about the connection. they want to know where the next 29-year-old's going to stand up and start shooting people. what should you tell them?
>> well, we've got a great intelligence apparatus, but if there is no communication between the shooter and outside people in other words, the lone wolf, that is very hard to detect. so it's all the more important if you see something, say something. >> do you also feel as though when, when adam schiff says this is an isis connection and isis has declared war on us, do you think it would help if the president declared war on them and told you guys, here's a vote, this is what we do, and after afghanistan, after al qaeda hit us on 9/11, we hit afghanistan. they just hit us here right down the road, should we hit raqqa right now? >> well, we're going into raqqa, but we're litting the arab troops go into raqqa while we help them go in -- >> but it's our enemy, senator. >> yes, it is. and the congress ought to declare war against isis. and that is a neglect from the

you think about your own daughters or my kids and you worry about them. >> you don't leave a world of successful businessman to become a governor just for the money, you care about people. that's what most public officials do. governor, having said that, if you care about people, what do you learn right away? do we need metal detectors in clubs now? we need an exit plan on every party area, restaurant, what things are you doing right now? >> what you can always do better. right now we're not doing this. i'm grieving with the families. i've been calling the families of those who lost loved ones. i talked to the hospital. right now i want to prepare a vigil. there'll be time to think about how we can make our society better, but right now i think the time is to grieve with the families. >> what would you like to see washington doing? afterall, this was a pledged isis, this is our al-baghdadi, you could say inspired in a way,

there is outrage, it is growing this morning over the missed warning signs the shooter pledged his allegiance to isis and was under investigation by the fbi, not once, but three times he was interviewed three times for two different investigations. >> so could this tragedy have been prevented? that's what people are talking about. former speaker of the house and former republican presidential candidate and fox news contributor, newt gingrich joins us louvive from d.c. >> good morning. >> we're hearing from a lot of different people, friend of the shooter from high school said that he cheered during the 9/11 attack. got somebody who worked with him said that he was a racist and unhinged and his company refused to fire him because he was muslim. the fbi talked to him a couple of times, didn't come up with anything. who didn't connect the dots here? >> well, look, i think you've had a national elite, the major
newspapers, the major networks, the obama presidency, many academics, many of whom are funded by countries like saudi arabia, you've had a whole wave of people who told us over and over and over again, going all the way back to george w. bush who said islam is a religion of peace and therefore to suggest somebody who might be muslim might be dangerous is a sign that you're an islam phobe. people have been fired from the federal government from reporting on the tenants of shia. people have been fired for talking about the nature of the muslim brotherhood. so i think what you've had is a widespread particularly on the left and particularly with obama and clinton and the administration, effort to suppress telling the truth about the threats we face. for example, you could say this was a hate crime, and it was. but then you have to recognize that the shia calls for killing people who engage in homosexual
acts. so if you're a true believer in shia and you actually around it, i'm not talking about people casually muslim or modern muslim, but if you are like isis, of course that's a hate crime because you hate us, but you hate all of us. you hate the whole west. you hate the fact that women drive. and women are allowed to show up and vote. and so these are hate crimes, but what people are not confronting is there's a worldwide movement, that halts us. now how do you change the law? how do you allow the fbi, for example, to use common sense? they've been told for the last seven years, you've got to be nice, you've got to be nice, you've got to be nice, please don't say anything disparaging, when in doubt, let them alone. i've had very senior people in the obama administration tell me they have to be really, really nice throughout the muslim brotherhood and about care because otherwise they won't get any corporation out of the muslim community. well, what we're now learning is the tone is so bad when people see somebody who hates america,
as they did in san bernardino where people actually thought they saw bombs, but they were afraid to call it in. because people might think they were islam phobic. this is a core argument. >> you heard governor huckabee saying you can't worry about offending these individuals, it's offensive that they're killing or shooting 103 or 102 different people. >> right. so let me go a step further, remember, san bernardino, ft.hood, and orlando involve american citizens. we're going to ultimately declare war on islamic spem cysts and we're going to say, if you pledge allegiance to isis, you are a traitor and you have lost your citizenship, and we're going to take a much tougher position. in the late 1930 president franklin roosevelt was faced with naz zis in the united states. we passed several laws in 1938 and 1939 to go after nazis, and

everything that was moving, he was shooting at. it doesn't matter what it was, everything that moved he was shooting on it. i tried to take him out, but i can't. the bullets were flying so fast, i don't ian know if i raised midhead. >> wow. >> just awful. one more thing to my little thing, if you'd indulge me. when you're in that situation, and you have no weapons, you have two choices, if you can't hide and you can't run, there's only two choices, you stay and die or you fight. for god sakes, fight back, fight back. there is 100 people dead, he murdered with one weapon that he reloaded, when they reload, america must understand, we are at war with islamic terror, with these terrorists, we've got to stop them in raqqa, we've got to stop them is in mosul and stop
