[laughter] >> ainsley: thank you all for being here. iowa. iowa got better looking. each better looking. look at this great crowd. all the different candidates are represented here. so we are going to have great conversations with them. the iowa electors, voters are so important as we know. the machine shed is an awesome restaurant. you walk in and there is a store. then you walk to the left and it looks like there is a war and more seating to the right. there is more seating. and we are back in this other part of the restaurant. and this is their menu. they are dedicated to the american farmer. of course, that just. [cheers and applause] all these farmers feed america. and they are celebrating them. so, if you are near a machine shed, you have to go to one of them there are six of them across the midwest. if you are in this area please come to this machine shed. this is in urbandale, iowa, which is a suburb of des moines. [applause] >> ainsley: steve, i know you were born in iowa. you said you grew up close to this area or lived in this area. >> i was born in al gotten that, iowa, north of des moines, one of my first jobs you i covered the state house i worked in des moines and i lived in west des moines which is right where you are in urbandale. >> work at the state house here or he was covering the state house for the abc affiliate. you all watch fox now, right? [laughter] >> ainsley: brian, how are you doing this morning? >> brian: thanks for asking, ainsley. i just know iowa is going to be in the center of the storm up until january. that's where all the candidates are going to be. i know you are going to be out and about with them today to give them an idea of life on the road. because you can talk about national polls all you want. but campaigns will begin and end and get jet fuel or die in iowa so there is so much at stake with those wonderful, good-looking people that are behind you. by the way it's always good to say to a crowd you are very good looking and you will always get applause for that, ainsley. that was great. >> ainsley: the reason i say that -- >> steve: you should always say you were much better than the last group we had. that always gets them. >> ainsley: yeah, this group is a lot better looking than that crowd you had, brian. >> brian: absolutely. that hurts my feelings. kick us off officially. >> ainsley: listener, really quickly, my dad used to take my friends when they would spend the night with me and he would go in front of the mirror in the bedroom. look at this, come here, girls. he said it happened again. they would say what, mr. earhardt? he said i got better looking overnight. [laughter] >> brian: now he can't do that anymore. >> steve: and he is watching. >> ainsley: i know you are not allowed to say that anymore. you can in the earhardt household. we don't take offense. let's begin with this. we have a fox news alert. president biden is in the air right now. he's en route heading to india, wheels up. where top world leaders are gathering for the g-20 summit. >> steve: the president is expected to strengthen ties with foreign leaders as the united states looks to counter china and boost support for ukraine. >> peter doocy is with him in new delhi, india or almost with him. >> air force one has refueled in germany. the president is going to be here in new delhi about three hours from right now. this is the kind of foreign trip that president biden thinks could be the key to his re-election because just look toe bay they have turned his stop in ukraine a few months ago into a new ad. >> in the middle of a war zone, joe biden showed the world what america is made of, that's the quiet strength of a true leader who doesn't back down to a dictator. >> peter: and maybe foreign policy is going to be a big factor in this election after all. because a new cnn poll has nikki haley the former u.n. ambassador as the republican polling the strongest against the president. biden also trailing pence, scott, trump, and christie. he is then tied with desantis and beating ramaswamy in the poll you see on the screen. within his own party two thirds of democrats saying they wish they had another democrat to choose from, just a third of people in his own party say they're happy with president biden as the top of the ticket. >> we have brand new cnn polling this morning and the numbers are rough for president biden. it could spell trouble for democrats and the president's hopes for re-election in 2024. still early but biden's approval rating has shrunk to 39%. 60% think his policies are making the economy worse. close to 70% of democrats want somebody else to run for president. and the president's approval among democratic voters. that's slipping. >> there's no way to spin. this cnn reads the country's mood right now and finds that america is deeply unhappy with joe biden. >> peter: a big point of this g-27 is to talk about the ways that the west could be a better trading partner for developing countries than china and also to talk about how the russian war in ukraine is bad. so it's no surprise to that xi from china and putin from russia are not going to be here but the president will and we will be with him the whole time. back to you. >> steve: it sounded like joe biden was suggesting president biden is not going to be at the g-20 but i will see him later. some thought maybe he would pop up in vietnam because your next stop is hanoi, right? >> yeah. but, as it turns out, when he said i'm going to see him, he just meant at some point in his life. [laughter] >> peter: not this trip in either india or vietnam. >> brian: bit of a risk if you are going to do an an ad on afghanistan. what were you doing on the lead up to that visit. if you had not left afghanistan would there have been a war in ukraine. could you nag they had the himars when the war started or they were armed prior to the war might they have been more successful? were you the one that told zelenskyy to leave before it starts because you can't win? so, if you want that conversation, which obviously the president wants because he has that ad out, he has got to be ready for the slings and arrows that come with that, correct? >> peter: well, yeah. i mean, the way that they want this to essentially boil down to is the rest of the g-20 is here. they all have a problem with russia. so they are going to try to figure out how to get as much money from the people that are here to ukraine. and so it's -- i think they see it as more simple. the money is drying up. back home, the public support for continued funding in the u.s. for this war is starting to diminish a little bit. kind of week by week. so they are trying to get everybody here, and they think that if they can get most of the g-20 saying russia is bad. ukraine needs our money, that they will get it. so we'll see. but, it's going to be tough. we heard from janet yellen about midnight eastern time here at the press center and she was talking about how it's going to be tough to get the leaders, not including putin on the same page about a resolution, a communique condemning russia and supporting ukraine. so it's not as easy as it might sound. >> steve: they kicked off two new ads with the kickoff of the nfl season, they had an ad on the economy and today with him in new delhi they kick off one on foreign policy. peter, thank you very much. the live report from india. >> peter: thanks. >> steve: you bet. >> brian: ainsley, you see the job approval there, right? >> ainsley: the job approval for joe biden? i mean, the negative job ratings overall. it's the widespread concerns about his age. it's the decreased confidence among democratic voter. look at this, only 39% approval. 68% disapprove. >> steve: that's bad. >> ainsley: it was 45% in january. brian you bring up a good point. the afghanistan withdraw, would that war in ukraine would have ever happened? would putin have had the nerve to do that if it hadn't been for afghanistan. and when you look at also the cnn poll it. says that nikki haley would be better in the general election against biden than any other republican candidate. >> steve: right. >> ainsley: almost half of those polls, 46% say any republican candidate is better than biden. >> steve: yeah, exactly. the clear winner, the person has got to be popping champagne is the nikki haley campaign because everybody else is within the margin of error, but she is way ahead in a hypothetical matchup. meanwhile, we have been talking a lot about foreign policy and yesterday, jen griffin from fox got an exclusive interview with retired centcom general frank mckenzie. has he written a brand new book. the untold story of biden wants fiasco and the american warriors who fought to the end. that title tells you a lot about it. we're going to play some snippets of it throughout the day. here's the first one where he talks a lot about how he thinks about what went down, doesn't feel good about it, and has regrets. watch. >> i have a lot of regrets about how it ended in afghanistan. i have a regret with the basics decision, which i think was the wrong decision. and i have -- i particularly regret that we did not choose to begin to evacuate our people, our embassy personnel, our american citizens, and our at risk afghans at the time we made the decision to bring in our combat forces. i think that was a serious mistake, and i think that led to the events of 2021 directly. >> do you blame the state department for delays. >> stay onto the very end and often push that until you are in extremist situation. i think that's what happened here. i think it's a case of american exceptionalism or american arrogance, depending on your perspective to believe that you can actually withdrawal, beaten from the field of battle, and still maintain a large political platform in the country you are actually retreating from. >> in your opinion, should the u.s. still have troops in afghanistan today from a national security perspective? >> that was my recommendation then. i see no reason to change that recommendation now. >> jen: how do you think history will treat the withdrawal and president biden's decision to bring all u.s. troops home from afghanistan? >> i believe history is going to view the decision to come out of afghanistan in the way that we did and the manner that we were directed to come out as a fatal flaw. and i think history is going to be very hard on that. >> brian: i appreciate his candor now, i guess, in a way. he did testify about that on capitol hill. he and mark milley said we did recommend you leave troops. the problem is the president said no one recommended that the president said no one predicted this type of fall. but the leader -- military leader said oh, we predicted that exactly. when you said get down to this low of number, we knew we couldn't hold bagram so we had no choice. it was general mckenzie the one who said to the leader al barredder who was on the cusp of taking kabul they talked what do you want me to do? there is nobody running kabul he said we only need the airport. and the taliban provided the security. and he went on to say when it came to the suicide bomber we never had him in our sights the problem is the sniper lost two limbs said we had him in our sights i'm sure i had the guy ahead of time. a lot of what mckenzie saying disputed by the people actually on the ground at the airport. this is just the beginning. i think it's great that he actually said he has regrets because we have a president and admiral kirby as a spokesperson have no regrets. he says from my perch, admiral kirby said i didn't see the chaos. is that hard to believe for you, ainsley? >> ainsley: yeah. you know, general mckenzie he said there is not a day that goes by he doesn't think about this. he will think about it for the rest of his life, especially in august. >> brian: he should have put his stars on the ground. >> ainsley: we interviewed family members of the 13 who lost lives they said they hear different stories from the soldiers that were on the ground with their sons and with their daughters. and they are hearing something different from those folks, the other soldiers, their friends, than the team that was in charge of the biden administration. the biden administration contact with those families, they said. haven't uttered their children's names since that day. >> steve: right. >> ainsley: we saw biden checking his watch on the tarmac. let's talk to some of the voters and find out what they think about this. so i was talking to whitney earlier. hey, whitney. >> hi, how are you? >> ainsley: nice to see you. >> nice to see you. >> ainsley: you served our great country what branch. >> i did. in the army. the only branch. >> ainsley: general mckenzie is talking about the afghanistan withdrawal and how chaotic and the regrets he has. what are your thoughts? >> it was one of the worst debacles and just watching the withdrawal happen watching the helicopters and planes taking off, i was just horrified. all i could think of is we don't leave people behind. in the military you just don't do that our commander-in-chief did exactly that. he failed our country. i was just heart broken. >> ainsley: any friends serving in afghanistan. >> i don't. at the time i didn't but now that i'm with the legion, many of them. >> ainsley: what do they all say about it? >> many say the same thing. they are is addeddenned. theys disheartened. but they know that it was a political decision and at times you have to go with what your commander-in-chief says it was terrible. >> ainsley: thank you so much for your service. >> thank you. >> ainsley: god bless you. anyone else in the military at this table. >> great job, whitney. afghanistan afghanistan how about the withdrawal. you were watching those images -- you don't want to be on camera. do you want to comment on the afghanistan withdrawal? how climate protesters disrupted the u.s. open in a very sticky situation. >> brian: unbelievable. what an embarrassment. plus, so many migrant kids flooding new york city schools. the classrooms and teachers were forced to turn many away. but mayor eric adams is shifting the blame. >> the migrants, this is a national problem. it should be handled by the national government but let's be clear this mess is -- is -- trump-like republicans mess. >> brian: really? here to react former vice president and just called out now in 2024 presidential candidate mike pence. great to see you, mr. president. >> great to see you, brian. >> brian: donald trump's fault? what your reaction. >> it was labor day. i was up in new hampshire. i said on new york radio that i appreciate mayor adams callingen out joe biden. but it is pretty rich to hear him say after our administration reduced illegal immigration remain in mexico policy that i negotiated on behalf of the administration and title 42, and then joe biden came in and on day one he dismnted al dismanted all of our policies that had worked to secure the southern border of the united states. i appreciate mayor adams conceding the fact that this is a biden administration problem, but it originated with the biden administration as well and the american know it. >> brian: do you think he believes what he said? do you think he believes what he said? >> it's really hard to believe. literally, i mean, we had secured the southern border of the united states. and, you know, as i'm out traveling all across the country, campaigning for the republican nomination sometimes people say to me do you think you can secure the southern border? we did it before. we literally secured the southern border of the united states. we can do it again. but joe biden's open borders policies have created the worst border crisis in american history. if i'm president of the united states, day one, we put back into effect the policies that worked in our administration and build out from there to secure our border and fix this broken immigration system. >> brian: as you know, up to 80,000 here illegally, state of emergency in massachusetts. in chicago you see what is going on there. assault on two cops. but the them into tent cities. if you take over, what do we do with all the people that were here? that are here? >> look, what you have got to do, you have got to enforce the law. you have got to -- you have got to basically restore the capacity to return people back across the border. that's what title 4 # allowed us to do. and then you have got to end the flow. i was actually told by the former head of border patrol that literally once the election settled out in 2020, the massive flow of people begin. this is all driven by the cartels. this is the most dramatic example of human trafficking in the history of the world. >> brian: mr. vice president, as you know the policy almost makes it impossible to get them out. some polls just came out on cnn that are stunning to the people of cnn. >> yeah. >> brian: maybe not to you. among the people that beat joe biden head-to-head is mike pence 46-44. that's for the first time that i'm seeing this. is it for you? wowhy do you think it's happenig now? >> joe biden has weekenned this country at home and abroad. the american people are on to it. 61% of americans in that same poll kiss approve of the job is he doing as president of the united states. all the gauzy ads. all the gauzy speeches and posturing by joe biden aren't going to change the fact that the american people know we need change in the white house. and i'm humbled by the support we are receiving. i saw ainsley is out at the machine shed in iowa. i'm going to be back in iowa on 9/11 and spending a good part of the week there. but, you know, i'm very humbled at the support that we're receiving. you know, i also believe, brian, we not only need new leadership in the white house. we need new leadership in the republican party. leadership that is grounded in the timeless traditional conservative values that have always defined our movement. >> brian: trailing the former president by about 40 points. how do you make that up gap? >> you know, look, the lions beat the chiefs, right? american people love competition. i think labor day hits and the debated really begins. we're going to go out and tell our story. i say with great humility i really believe that i'm the most qualified, the most experienced, the most tested an proven conservative in this race. we're going to carry that message forward. and we'll let the people in iowa and new hampshire and every state across the country to decide. >> brian: you are not going to let mayor adams get you down. >> janice: we will have a better idea if it's going to have a direct impact on the east coast. the bottom line be this is one of the most intense hurricanes that we have ever had in the atlantic. it's going through something called an eye wall replacement cycle. that just means it's trying to get even stronger. but, look at this. category 5. 165 mile-per-hour sustained winds. that happened overnight. and it's going to strengthen further. there is really nothing in its way. nothing in its path to tear it apart. then as we get into next week we have to pay close attention because the steering currents become a little less clear and it's looking f more and more tht we could have a brush with the northeast. maybe new england, maybe nova scotia. bottom line you want to pay attention to this forecast as we get into the weekend we will have a better idea of where this area of low pressure is going to go. right now that's not very confident. so that's a big deal. and we'll be monitoring it, first of all, with fox weather.com. the other big stories, texas, louisiana, up towards the northeast with this cold front pushing through. we could see some stronger storms along the i-59 corridor and the heat is going to remain the big story for the southwest and the southern plains. we will keep you up to date. of course, carley, my friend, as we get into the weekend. >> carley: janice, thank you so much. >> janice: all eyes on that storm: i know you will be drag tracking it through the weekend as well. rescue efforts are underway to save a sick american trapped in a deep cave in turkey officials say cave fell ill 3,000 feet below ground unable to travel back to the surface on his own. the american is in stable condition and sent a message thanking the turkish government for their efforts to get him out. a lot going on in that story there. wow. and the democratic officials who led calls to dismantle the maines police department in 2020 is now calling for tough on crime policies after becoming a victim. the party leader posted this bloody selfie saying she was attacked during a car jacking in front of her own children. she says she was left battered with a broken leg. and, as you saw there, a keep cut to her forehead. the suspects are still on the loose but her car was recovered. those are your headlines, steve. over to you. >> steve: all right. thank you very much. meanwhile, calling all women. the infrastructure industry is seeing a surge in recruitment efforts to fight the ongoing labor shortage and it's substantial. and our next guest says women are the key. ashley lauer, left her bartending job last year to pursuer a new career in the construction industry and she has doubled her income. she is a heavy equipment operator adisfor local 701 and she joins us now from red man, oregon. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> steve: take us back, a year ago you were a bartender, making half the money. why did you decide to make the jump? >> i thought it was something that doesn't seem like an easy transition but from the bar, the type of bar i was in it did kind of make sense. and my ex-boyfriend at the time could do cool things with buckets, like pickpocket your wallet with a bucket. i thought that was pretty neat. so i was like oh, i can do that. anything you can do i can do better kind of thing and signed up for it. and here i am. >> steve: you entered a preapprentice class with oregon trades women. two graphics for you, ashley, about half a million additional workers are needed, just to bring us up to the normal number of people we would need in your workforce, in your industry. and while women make up 50% of the workforce, only 19% of infrastructure jobs. women are on the job, they are out nourished. is that daunting? >> it can be. it definitely can be. it can be overwhelming and stressful for sure. if you are a woman in the workforce we tend to stick together anyway. >> steve: i get it. your advice for any woman who is thinking about it, should they be terrified "i don't think i could drive a great big crane or earth movers or anything like that?" >> no. not at all. anything anybody else can do we can do, too. >> steve: absolutely. indeed. your advice if somebody is thinking about it, just do it, right? how do they do that? >> >> yeah, absolutely. after the mid terms last fall, i wrote this article entitled "the g.o.p. must address the elephant in the room gen z" few days later i got a call from ronna mcdaniel the rnc chairwoman. we started conversations about what was needed engagement needed with the youth vote. since then evan brought on to co-chair the youth advisory council. meeting voters where they're online. connecting, getting information out online through social media. letting my generation know how to register to vote. where they need to vote. how to be voting election make a plan to do it. that's been our focus. >> ainsley: well, brilyn, i have a feeling we will be voting for you one day. you are only 17 but you will be able to vote in the presidential election, right? it could cost 2.5000. maybe 8,000. the american trucker's association says it's going to cost $42,000. and here's the thing, mike. i know you talked to one of our producers about past regulations. and some of the things they have mandated just don't work. >> correct. they mandated elds, electronic logging devices in 2017. i support that two years later they changed the rules for the elds, they are so stringent that truckers are getting more accidents now than ever. and then these rules are changed through -- for the safety. they say save 500,000 lives or i forget the number exactly. doing the complete opposite. these truckers are running they call it chasing the clock. getting in more accidents than ever. so i don't know why the government is waiting. but they should roll it back to what worked before and we're kind of at a stand still. >> steve: we did reach out to the epa for a statement. have not heard back. mike, you know what? sometimes it seems like they don't talk to the people in the industry to make suggestions. you know, there are people in washington, d.c. right now watching you, give us one thing they should suggest that would help you out. >> yeah. so, a call to action would be this technology is being passed through way too fast with little testing and data. these truckers need an affordable hybrid truck with i would say at least two systems of power. if one shuts down or breaks, the other one continues. i would love to see a truck with three systems. so you could continue going. because if this technology fails, the entire supply chain will be dead in the water. failure is not merely inconvenient. it's creank. this is not an option. especially for the food supply chain of america. >> steve: great suggestion. hybrid trucks. he would buy a best of your knowledge of them. mike kuchar ski, sir, co-owner f kjc trucking. >> thank you for having me on. >> steve: 7:00 in new york. and 6:00 in chicago. and the second hour of "fox & friends" starts right now. ♪ ♪ >> ainsley: okay. good morning. happy friday! we are at the machine shed, righ
