would gather in a big circle in the middle of that room and just tear into our gifts. my grandfather would always have a fire lit and you could hear the crackling of the fire and we would see that and smell it when we would walk into their house. and i can hear him now calling hay all and we would pull up. he would always make that noise and we would run inside and hug them. i have wonderful memories and i'm so grateful and i just love my family for raising me in such a wonderful, traditional family. and in south carolina, knowing the lord, going to church on sundays, knowing how special christmas is and what it means for all of us as christians. and just grateful to my family for being so amazing. sandra smith remembers to be grateful for the quiet moments at christmas. growing up, the youngest of six kids, family of eight in the midwest, i longed for traditional christmases, you know, santa claus coming down the fireplace and christmas presents around the tree. i longed for those quiet moments and rarely did we get those. my dad's the eldest of 11 children. we had these huge christmas eve. they were near and dear to my heart. very special. i always loved the holidays. i embraced the decorations. i look forward to the moment where you unpack the special heirloom ornaments and you put them around the tree. and as a kid, it was always those ornaments that you made growing up in your classroom and you brought home from school and you were so proud to hang them. so i always enjoyed those moments. but as i went off, graduated college and i started my career in tv, all of a sudden my christmases took on a whole new chaos. from my chaos growing up in a big family as a kid to then the chaos of, wow, you can enjoy a little bit of your thanksgiving meal back in future, and i. i always promised myself i would have that one day. well, then one christmas eve, i got an airplane i was supposed to get on an airplane and fly back to chicago to visit my husband and my family at the time. boyfriend and my family. little did i know he had plans to propose to me on christmas eve before we went to the big smith family christmas party. i missed my flight in due fashion. i showed up late and that flight, that plane took off without me. and i couldn't get home till the following day. and i ruined the entire surprise. but it's a memory i'll always have with me, because it was christmas time that i got engaged to my husband. but it was another example of just chaotic christmases. and in that moment, i promised myself that one day we would have a family and we would be sharing with them our engagement story. and hopefully we would be nestled by the fire, enjoying our new traditions as a family. years went by. we had a baby girl, a baby boy, and now we have a really special place where we get cozy up in the mountains. we listen to christmas music, and we have our own traditions. and amid the chaos, i've always longed for the peaceful, quiet moments. and those are the moments that i enjoy with my family and my little ones. today, with some hiccups still, of course. fox nation's once a year sale is our gift to you. with 50% off all yearly plans for a picked a side in the real versus artificial christmas tree debate. and for those of you who know, i am obsessed with christmas, it might surprise you to learn which team i'm on. spoiler. both. but for a very special reason. now, i grew up in california. i was the youngest of three girls. and at the age of 35, my mother was diagnosed with an aggressive, advanced form of breast cancer. this was when my sisters and i were all under the age of ten. now, at that point, obviously, it rocked our family. we were so close knit and we lived in a small, close knit neighborhood where friends were chosen, family and neighbors were chosen family as well. and the whole neighborhood was absolutely devastated at the time of my mother's diagnosis and subsequent treatment. my dad was a young united states navy physician, so he was managing her care and all of her treatment, as well as raising three daughters all by himself at home. and don't get me wrong, he was coping in the absolute best way. we were never without love and nurturing and care. but that first christmas, we weren't going to have a christmas tree. my dad did not have time for that. now our beloved neighbors named dilla and louis denardo, who to this day remain angels among us. and i've always considered them surrogate grandparents. they caught wind that the girls were not going to have a christmas tree. and so one day we heard a knock on the door. we open up the door and della and louis are standing there with a huge box. and inside was an artificial christmas tree, complete with snow on it. believe me, this california girl was mesmerized. so we put it together and it had all of the magical lights and ornaments that had been passed down in our family. and it just represented this sparkly, beautiful symbol of the season of hope and prayer and blessings and the power of love. and in time, all of our prayers were answered, and my mom pulled through. to this day, that remains our miracle. and each christmas we put up that artificial tree because to us, it's a symbol of that enduring hope, of the love and the faith of the guardian angels around us, of the love and faith that family and chosen family extend toward one another, especially during this season, and also of answered prayers for her. although finding just the right balance between his catholic and jewish heritage was a struggle during childhood, december's. but the rivera family eventually decided on a christmas cut compromise chrismukkah. rachel that's quite a concept. but when you have a dad who is a devout catholic and a mom who's a very observant jew, you've got to compromise. you've got to make adjustments, you've got to innovate something new. and that's what we did in the rivera family. now, first, it wasn't so easy. my dad from puerto rico, my mom from newark, new jersey, they got together right here in new york on 42nd street, a child's cafeteria. my mom was a waitress. my dad was in charge of the kitchen. help! they fell in love. and there you had a romeo and juliet story. but with a happy ending. so what we do about christmas, what we do about hanukkah. my mom insisted that my dad convert to judaism when they got married. it didn't go through the formal process. but he acknowledged to the world that yes, indeed, now he was jewish. i mean, that didn't stick, but he really tried initially. so my mom was in charge of the holiday season. now, hanukkah is very different from christmas. it takes place, you know, over eight days. it's a celebration, you know, something in the old testament, the maccabees and the liberation of the jews. but we acknowledge hanukkah. you give a gift every day. it's very modest. there's nothing that has to do with the birth of christ and the founding of of christmas or the basis of christmas. so here we were celebrating hanukkah. we moved from brooklyn, where there were a lot of puerto ricans and a lot of jews to west babylon, long island, where we were the only jewish family and the only puerto rican family. so we were already isolated. so everybody in west babylon celebrated christmas. nobody celebrated hanukkah but us. so the kids and my sisters and myself were, you know, felt very awkward. we felt left out. we had no christmas celebration the way the other kids did. so we lobbied our mom. mom let us celebrate christmas. it is, after all, half of the rivera family heritage. my mom was absolutely resistant. she absolutely refused. she wouldn't acknowledge christmas for many years. and we kept lobbying her and lobbying her. come my mom. we feel left out. let us celebrate christmas also. no, no, no. you're jewish. no, no, no, no. finally, when we were teenagers, we said to mom, mom, we're not going to take it anymore. we're going to celebrate christmas, just like all of our friends and neighbors do. but this is what we're going to do instead of a christmas tree. we're going to call it a hanukkah bush instead of christmas or hanukkah. we're going to call it chrismukkah. and we had all of these compromises. and to placate my mom, we also played rock of ages. when we sang jingle bells and silent night and all the traditional. christmas christmas. carols, we finally got our tree. it was called the hanukkah bush. it was right there in the rivera family home. my mom, kind of disgruntled, reluctantly over the years, came around instead of joy to the world. it was okay to the world and the rivera family. that was our christmas. it worked out finally. and it's a great time. and a great time was had by all. but for janis, christmas means remembering her childhood in canada, from maple sirup to boxing day, the journey home reminds her why it's important to never forget your roots. i've lived in new york for close to 20 years, but i grew up in canada. i was born in toronto, grew up in ottawa, canada for most of my childhood. and the thing i remember most about christmas was the snow. first of all, ottawa is one of the coldest capitals in the world. so of course, when you've got cold air during the wintertime season, you're bound to have a lot of snow. and i remember a lot of days i would come home and i would see the weather forecast and the meteorologist would say up, you know, be prepared. tonight, we're going to get over a foot of snow. back home in canada, it was the metric system. so it was in centimeters, so or an end meters. so the snow would be in the meters. and i always used to think to myself, how do they know how much snow we're going to get? being a meteorologist now, i know that sometimes they do get it wrong, but when they get it right, oh, the snow. the next day sometimes will be piled high as our rooftop. so i remember winters being cold and a lot of snow. and then, of course, growing up in ottawa, there was ice skating. i mean, if you're a kid, you're on skates pretty much right out of the gate. you have to know how to skate. and hockey is a big wintertime sport in canada, so a lot of young men and women are on their skates on the rideau canal, the longest outdoor skating rink in the world. i remember that, of course, growing up, we would always, every season go out on the rideau canal and sharpen our skates, and then there would be hot chocolate and donuts, beaver tails afterwards. beavertail is sort of like a long donut with whatever topping you like on top of it. chocolate or icing or icing sugar or cinnamon. so those are the things that i remember. christmas, of course, was an exciting time as a kid just opening up the box. we didn't have a tree that we would cut. it was always, you know, the box tree that the artificial tree. but that was very special to me because we had a tree that was very, very old. my father had this artificial tree when he was growing up. so that in and of itself was a big event to open up this beautiful tree that we would put together. and i remember, you know, you'd have to put the branches into the wooden peg and sometimes we'd actually have to carve those little pegs at the branches would have to go into because it was so old, but we never wanted to get rid of it. and then, of course, the decorations i still have decorations that are probably close to 50 or 60 years old, decorations that my father grew up with. and just opening up the ornaments brings back a flood of memories for me and i and i love showing those old ornaments to my kids. they know i've never got to meet my father. he died a little bit after they were born. so it does remind me of my father and and getting together and putting up the christmas tree. it's such a special time. bill hemmer explains how christmas wouldn't be christmas without the. satisfied feeling of being at home with family. i honestly think when you talk about christmas, you can talk about any one of 100 different stories of a the course of your lifetime. but for me, it wasn't presents or food. it's it's about family. and i've got a big family. we're almost 30 people and it's hard to get everybody together in the same room when you get larger and larger and more and more spread out. so that's one of the main reasons why i think christmas is one of those moments where you can do that and you get reconnected and start to learn again as you get reacquainted with each other where they are in their life. i think it's very important. it's vital to the relationships you have in family, because i think in the end, you know, you go through life and in the end, what you are really left with is just a handful of good friends, if you're lucky. and of course, your family. when we started this project, however, i wanted to put a focus on family, but i also wanted to talk about something i haven't really thought about. that's my grandparents who are no longer with us. but what christmas meant to my grandparents was substantial. you know, they had one child, my mom and four, the parade of our family. you know, we have five kids, mom and dad, to go barreling into their house around noontime on christmas day. they really just lit up and so did we. and that was one of the sweetest memories that i have that i just i wanted to share with people at home who perhaps have a similar experience to which they can relate. but christmas would not be christmas without the experience together as a family. people like diana don't come along every day. they had an absolute donald in their midst. she was an exceptional and gifted human being. scandalous is back with an all new three part series on the shocking life of princess diana. when diana spoke about the courtship, she realized that she was never really alone. prince charles was always there with camilla parker bowles. she would vomit 4 to 5 times a day. she made five suicide attempts at scotland yard being there in paris. this accident would never have happened. and i understood the media might be interested in what i did, but i was not aware of how overwhelming that attention john roberts appreciates happy christmases all the more because he remembers a christmas that wasn't. the story of christmas is all about birth, of course, the birth of the baby jesus. but in many, many ways. for my family, christmas was a time for rebirth. and the reason for that was one year when i was five years old, just about to have my sixth birthday. my father passed away, and that was a month before christmas. and of course, the tragedy hit our family very, very hard, not the least of which reasons was because my mother, who had been a stay at home mom, suddenly had to keep a roof over the heads of myself, my sister and my brother. she hadn't really done that before, so she was at somewhat of a loss to figure out how she was going to keep the roof over our heads. and of course, with christmas just a few weeks away, how she was going to maintain the spirit of christmas for us at our household. but god bless her, she was able to do it. and not just that first year where she had the happiest christmas she possibly could. given her loss and our loss. but every christmas after that, christmases around our house were fairly simple. my mother didn't make a whole lot of money, and so there were presents under the tree. of course, this presents were very modest, but each one of them was very thoughtful and very much appreciated by the members of our family. and that was a tradition that we continue on through the rest of our lives. i remember being at christmas celebrations where there were dozens of presents under the tree and the presidents were ripped open with such haste and kind of cast aside that nobody really took in what was going on or what the president really was or what the meaning of it was. there was no real appreciation for it. and i thought to myself, that's not my idea of christmas. my idea of christmas is a very special gift, maybe one or two that you would really cherish. and i remember from my 13th birthday, my mother got me one of those when she was working as a receptionist at a car dealership, probably making $90 a week at the time. and she knew how much i loved guitar and playing in a band and i was trying to bang away at this acoustic guitar that used to be my brothers, but to very little effect. so i remember one day as a combination birthday and christmas present, she got me this beautiful, gorgeous blond fender telecaster, which was beyond my wildest dreams. she had saved up money for years to buy it, and that was one of my most treasured christmas gifts. and that's the sort of spirit that i like to still try to emulate in christmases now and going forward with our new twins, who are now ten years old. the tendency of young children is to say, i want this and i want this and i want that. but i think that you do them a disservice by giving them everything that they want. i think what's a much better tradition at christmas is to give your child one or two very special gifts that they will cherish, as i did some of the gifts that i received from my mother. so rather than lavishing on them anything that they want, we tell them to draw up a very short christmas list with a couple of things that they would really want to have, things that are very special to them. and by and large, they'll end up with those things, as they have for the last ten years. going forward, we hope that they will maintain that same sense of modesty in their christmas desires and really remember what christmas is all about. and that is time for family to come together, a time to really be closest to the ones that you love. because i know what it's like to be without the ones you love. and so at that very special time of year, to be together with family, i think is the most important thing. a tradition that we recently adopted after our children started going to catholic school was there was a giving tree at our church and hanging from the giving tree with little tags, not with names of children, but with things that profile of a child and things that those children would like to have under the tree if they had one at christmas. and some of them were typical. i'd like a video game, or i'd like a remote controlled car, but we were really moved by a couple of the requests. one young boy, who was probably 12 or 13 years old, said he wanted underwear for christmas. i mean, what kid wants underwear for christmas? you have to really be in need if you want undershirts for your christmas present. another young child had asked for toiletries, soap and a hairbrush comb, things like that. so we pulled a lot of these tags off of this tree. we got as many as we possibly could thinking that there were children out there who were under the umbrella of our church who could really benefit from having some of the simplest things in life. and again, it comes back to the original spirit of christmas in that stable in bethlehem. what was there? there was a bunch of straw. there was a manger. and there were a people and not much else. then, of course, the wise men brought some pretty good gifts for the baby jesus. but when it comes down to it, christmas is all about the simple things. it's about just remembering the spirit of christmas, remembering why there is christmas, and bringing together family in the warmest, most generous and happiest environment that they could possibly be in. something that will warm your heart for the rest of the year and maybe years after that. chevy silverado factory-lifted trucks. where will they take you? ♪ doocy recalls memories of christmas past. i remember shortly after our first son peter was born, i had seen something in a magazine where a dad had taken a picture with his child in the same spot every january 1st. and and he put all like 25 or 30 of them together. and it was like a time lapse of both of them growing up and getting older. and i thought, you know, it would be great if i could do something like that with our kids. and at that point, we had one. and so we decided, my wife, kathy, that what we would do is i would stand at the bottom of the stairs on christmas morning now, and i would tape the kids running down the stage. and in the beginning, it was just peter. but then mary came along, like you say, peter, and then sally came along. i seen her and we did that every year for close to 30 years. i got my wife. i can't tell you how many times my wife, kathy and i had been to different events, book signings and things like that across the country, and people would come up to us and they'll say, hey, i saw that video that you showed on fox and friends on the fox news channel where your kids run down the stairs. i saw your kids grow up on television, and that's why so many people say the same thing to my son peter, who's now at the white house. they go, i saw you grow up on television. mr. white house correspondent and actually, they did go up at the doocy house. we have two things that are traditions in addition to running down the stairs, and that is you have to wrap your christmas present. you can't just you're going to give it to somebody. you can't just drop it in a gift bag. that's too easy because this shows you actually put some time into it. but then we also have a tradition where you have to put some thought into it and rather than have a card, we have the kids write poems to us which are often quite humorous, terrible rhymes in some cases, but it's a family tradition and we do that every year. thank you so much for joining us for this fox
