intended to encourage african-americans to enlist in the u.s. army in world war ii and traces the history to contributions to society during the revolutionary war. in 2011 it was chosen to be pioneer regimen, the 332nd battalion and 808 pioneer regimen. fighting on the front. 372nd on the plains. 371st. and the 369 in the argon. 369th fought on the line of fire for 191 days, not a man had been captured, not a foot of ground. the first american troop to receive the 369th and to action above and beyond the call of duty, many received honored medal. when they cleaned up in france, the boys came marching home. among them was henry johnson, and captured 28 german, for which the french nation decorated them for exceptional bravery. there were those among the honored at arlington, samuel washington, wall to waters, william fox, john sims, young, charles young colonel, united states army. and to their memory, stone and, tributes of a grateful nation, to commemorate their heroism and sacrifice of all colored soldiers who served in the various wars, engaged in by the united states of america that a lasting record shall be made of their unselfish devotion to duty. and in france the french people erected a memorial to the 371st infantry. this stone and the ground on which it stands are dedicated to the any grow troops who fought and died here on april 23rd, 1918. 23 years later on june 15, 1941 and invading german army, yes, the naziss destroyed our monuments in france, but our monuments stand and will always stand, the founder of tuskegee institute, he lifted the vail it, mama. if i can go through those first 13 weeks the way i did, i could go through anything. that morning at the railroad, i didn't know which side was up, but misery sure loves company. when i said the country. we finally arrived at a place called "military secret." but this much i can tell you, it was cold. >> i bet right now, mama, i can make a bed better than you can. but before i had a chance to get the bed warm, there i was. in the beginning it was all feet. -- then came the cross country marching. the top of the day and shot of the night, you'll get use to it. if you can't take it, they've got doctors. some of the best in the country, specialists in every field. and in our dental clinic. but even so, this is one that no soldier likes. but after all of the making beds and pealing potatoes and drilling and marching, they give you a rifle and teach you to shoot it. in no time at all i can hit the broad side of the bun. it was fun. it's not all work. there's football, baseball, boxing and, oh, yes, ping-pong. if you want to read, there's a library. can you imagine me listening to po poetry. it came in good. we were sat on a detail to a nearby camp. i saw some that was beautiful to be behold. these girls have forgotten more about jeeps and trucks than she'll ever know. and the next day was saturday night. in this man's army they want you to be tough, but tough -- and i mean tough. and tough in the army means a good fighter who can stand up against a strong enemy and beat him to the draw, and after a hard week, a soldier welcomes a sunday. >> there are five times as many men with high school education in our armed forces than were in world war i. this has meant an increase in officer candidate. they tell us in the present war, there are three times as colored officers as in world war i. of a score, and commissions and taking their place alongside those who come from any one of hundreds of rotc schools and the greatest of all military institutions, west point. >> the next time you see me i'll be wearing an officer's uniform, ready to get in there and get this over with. >> that's a promise. >> thank you, that's a promise millions of americans have made. thousands have put it into action, every camp many are getting their final work out and tuskegee, more pilots are earning their wings. in a short while these young officers will be full flej combat flyers. taking their place at the controls of our fighter planes. high above their native land, they fly. tomorrow, what a surprise the nazis will get in black, brown, yellow and white men, all americans, land on the airfield of berlin and tokyo. they know in a fight all that is e evil, truth must be ready. no waiting for weather or temperature, any weather can be good weather. and they're determined to get it done, come what may. and the men we knew cook, entertainers, carpenters, farmers, or today soldiers in a modern army, tank man, gunners, radio operator and motor mechanic. every man, school in the meaning of team work. every man qualifies to replace any of his teammates at any time. every man ready to do his share. the engineers, the fighting buildings, ready to build bridges, highways, railroads. quarter master, who moves troops and supplies to provide fuel. ready to patrol, scalp, harris. ready for swiss and decisive and the infantry men. backbone of the army. >> hit that water! this training has met the acid test of war. across the pacific, across the atlantic. the shadow of defeat hangs over the axis partners as the allies liberate town after town. but the job isn't finished. this is only the beginning. to win the final victory over germany and japan, our blows must be dealt harder and faster. and with all our strength. there can be no letup in the flow of supplies. more and more food, equipment, and ammunition must reach our troops in the battle areas. more airports. landing fields. docks. bridges. and roads must be built. our troops must build them through the swamps of the south pacific. the snows of the far north. over the mountains of india. and across the rivers of europe. build them in record time. and under enemy fire. build them right
