technology that can improve her life in knowing that we have advocates like mom fighting for better care makes me feel hopeful. >> host: here's the book, belly and coach. stephanie shaheen is the author. [inaudible conversations] [inaudible conversations] >> if i could have your attention, we are going to proceed with your program. i hope you are enjoying your lunch or christmas tea as we have termed it. welcome to the reagan ranch center. my name is andrew kaufmann and i have the privilege of serving as the director of the reagan ranch and merry christmas. i will just go ahead and say it. [applause] is great to have you with us during this holiday season. holliday is not a bad word as long as it's used in the same context with christmas. i would like to as you are enjoying your food already began our program pretty quickly with an invitation followed by the pledge of allegiance but just as we have been told is no longer appropriate to say merry christmas, we have been culturally conditioned many of us i think to feel uncomfortable with both of these rituals, prayer and the pledge. we are told that there is no longer a place for faith or patriotism in a public setting. we certainly saw that over the past few days with the bizarre but not entirely surprising leftist backlash against the very act of prayer in the wake of the terrorist attack in san bernardino. but let's recall that not what to long ago and a few here need reminding we had a president who is not only a man of great faith in himself but also present his leadership was unapologetically founded on these principles. we are headed into the christmas season but as we just celebrated thanksgiving leftover moment reflect on ronald reagan's words from thanksgiving day to 1986. perhaps no customer deals are characterizations are clearly then our celebration of thanksgiving day ronald reagan said. rooted deeply in our judeo-christian heritage that practices offering thanksgiving underscores her unshakable belief in god and our life for him for all blessings flow both as individuals and as people we join with psalm and praise. give thanks unto the lord for he is good. one of the most inspiring portrayals of american history is that of george washington on his knees in the snow at valley forge. that moving image per upon a thought -- her son off ice divine providence during the darkest hours of the revolutionary struggle. it was then when our federalist nation was tested most severely that the sovereign and judge of nations who heard our plea came to her assistance in the form of aid programs. thereupon general washington immediately called for a special day of thanksgiving among his troops. 11 years later president washington at the request of congress first proclaimed november 26, 1789 is thanksgiving day and thanksgiving a proclamation president washington this -- observed a public thanksgiving and prayer that washington reminded us is the duty of all nations to knowledge of the providence of almighty god to obey his will and to be grateful for his benefits and humbly implore his favor. today let us take heart in the noble example of our first president and let's cause from her many activities to give thanks to almighty god for our bountiful harvest and abundant freedoms they let us call upon him for guidance and assistance in all aren't diverse and let us never be mindful of our faith and spiritual values that made our nation great and will keep us great. it's pretty remarkable that a president once spoke to us that way. and it seems. i would like to invite brandon mckenzie to lead us in the invocation of the pledge. as you are making your way to the front branson is a graduate of westmont college where he majored in clinical science and history and led the efforts of the campus to bring conservative voices to westmont. he is a former intern at the reagan ranch center and is now continuing its commitment by working for the gop orange county and i believe is headed off to law school in the fall. mckenzie martinez is a senior at carpinteria high school and is planning to start her college career at santa barbara city college where she will make -- major in business. she was just the young america foundation by helping to cater events just like this one and after serving many meals here at the center -- [applause] she has begun attending up rogue reminisces student and is becoming passionate defender of freedom at her high school where she's also a cheerleader. brandon will lead us in prayer followed by a mckenzie who will lead us in the pledge of allegiance. >> lets pray. dear lord thank you for this day and thank you even in the age of darkness where christians are under attack that we can still live in a country where we are filled with the gospel and our roots are so saturated with the gospel truth that our rights come from god and begin even now proceed in challenging times by looking to you and seeking your guidance and wisdom as we move forward. please continue to give us strength and wisdom as we confront the views before us protect us and help us protect our religious liberties as we move forward. we pray also for governor palin speech today may her words fill us with strength and wisdom and give us the guidance we need to keep confronting the difficult times ahead of us. we offered this to you. amen. >> please stand. i pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under god, indivisible with liberty and justice for all. >> thank you brandon and thank you mckenzie. we are blessed today to be able to conclude their 2015 series of events here at the center with three phenomenal leaders in our cause. as we will hear momentarily of course from her friend governor sarah palin making her first return to the reagan rant centers and she helped us remember to celebrate the 100th anniversary of ronald reagan's birth and 2011 and we are thrilled to be able to welcome her back here to santa barbara. the governor will be joined on stage by a colleague and leader who has worked in every capacity a match and let the american foundation from her member for staff to member the board of directors and latest evening we will hear from a stalwart of the conservative movement in the house of representatives congressman matt salmon representing day airs on district and founding of the freedom caucus. he and his wife nancy are with us as well. welcome. [applause] finally i would also like to recognize and welcome our good friends secret service agent member of the board of governors john barletta. it's good to have you with us. [applause] now to formally introduce the speakers this afternoon i would like you to welcome back to the podium another phase you may have missed a last few months at the center, caroline garay said. caroline is a developmental office and is just returned from maternity leave. you know everything about caroline's background you will not be shocked to learn that her new baby girl is -- please welcome caroline barrasso. [applause] >> thank you andrew, it's great to be back. it's an honor for me to introduce our groups. not too long ago as a conservative but the university of virginia i found great role models so it's a delight to have defenders of freedom with at the zoo today but i like to introduce our moderator keith open chain. she is has served in various leadership roles at the foundation and is now one of our most popular students the gazette onto campuses and challenges the liberal agenda. a proud virginian she has been active in virginia politics or many are serving as an adviser to governor george allen and the first woman chairman of the women's gop and the sought-after voice in a regular news outlets such as "fox news" and cnbc. she's a contributor, and other printer being british is. the book lot of them praised by many conservative leaders. kate is the proud mother of four beautiful children who devoted her work to promote freedom for generations. now it like to tell you about governor sarah palin. for many of us governor palin became a household name in 2008 when she was the republican party nominee for vice president alongside senator john mccain. governor palin is about christian -- mother of five who excited the american people. the commonsense conservatism on the founding principles made her a favorite for americans. governor palin is a proud alaskan and pray to her candidacy she had a full career serving the people of alaska. she was elected to the city council became mayor in the chairman of the alaska oil and gas conservation commission in 2006 became the youngest and first woman to be able to be elected as a governor of alaska. an attempt to champion the alaskan people shaping the size of government and empowering individuals. even called by some most popular governor america. following the 2000 election governor palin took the road and became a sought-after commentator and voice for conservatives. she traveled the country campaigning on behalf of candidates had stood for the right things promoting women of government and to freedom and independence and traditional values. she hosted a great show on tlc called sarah palin celeste introducing the lower 48 to the wonders of her beloved country. 2000 governor palin offer going rogue and american life among wire for private and political life which became an immediate bestseller in 2010 her next book america by heart. today we are excited for her to share with us about her newest book "sweet freedom" a devotional about family, faith and community based on biblical verses which provides inspiration. governor palin is an accomplished and admirable leader but more importantly she -- including her husband taught her five children and three grandsons. we are to have governor palin back of the reagan rant center. please join me in welcoming her. [applause] >> hello. this is such a thrill. a lot of you were here in 2011 when governor palin came and helped us with that incredible celebration of president ronald reagan's 100 birthday. it was such a highlight for all of us here at the young america foundation. thank you and i know that ronald reagan's faithless the deep end was a huge part of who he was when he accomplished. he would be thrilled to know that you are kicking off the freedom tour and you are here to share with us this incredible book. so many people when they look you from afar they think of your great strength. joe shines through and i think you never back down no matter what. it's like the marines you run towards the fire and you run towards the danger. that's what this woman does, just a biding her time. in this book you talk about where that strength came from and radiant joy comes from. of course you do. and probably the main theme of the book and in it you say god can take every dart and arrow aimed your way all the mocking and negative words in every struggle in pitfall pushing it to the edge every battle you never asked for but are forced to fight him in his strength we become victorious. you never asked to become a national political hero really and yet that's what you became and yet you have this gift from god, this gives us to connect with the american people to inspire. it's totally reaganesque and it's extremely rare. how did god give you the courage to embrace those gifts instead of doing what sadly a lot of us would have done, wren and the other direction. >> thank you so much for that encouragement. it means so much kate. appreciate it and back in 2011 it was so wonderful to be here. we'll never forget it. it was one of the highlights of my career thus far was being able to be here and get that sounds, that's theodore ronald reagan being here. he has been my political hero my entire life. in fact i was blessed to have come into being if you will politically speaking my college years in high school and college years when president reagan was in the white house. i got to see how it's supposed to be done, you know? and be selling courage to buy the real hope that he inspired in our nation and truly making america great. i certainly benefited from that but personally, i note that i'm so fallible. i have so much weakness. i make mistakes all the time but that's the secret, is in my weakness i know that i can have strength is omnipotent because it comes from god and god invites us to ask for it and he will fill us up then. when i was a little girl i became a christian at a summer bible camp out in the wilderness of alaska. i remember looking around at the beautiful landscape, majestic mountains, clean water, so gorgeous and i knew then that the creator of all that, the creator who was so omnipotent that this could be a part of my life and my surroundings, i knew that i would be well off if i put my life in his hands and said the cracked vessel that i am and we all are, use me if you can lord. putting my life in his hands and it's been amazing since then. peaks and valleys of course quite a rollercoaster ride but knowing that it's okay to have witnesses, to have those fallibility sent to admit to them and ask god to use them anyway and somehow turn them into something that can help other people. that is what i encourage other people to do, give it a shot. >> i don't know exactly where you've missed humility. you have such humility and i have to say i was in the green room once. we were at "fox news" and there was this terror that sarah palin was coming in and i happen to be sitting there with one of the few liberals who works at fox. i was the liberal hosts and i had heard that governor palin was coming and and he was knocking people over to get close to her. she had that ability. people want to be near you. you inspire people and yet you stay humble. i've got teenagers all but that is something to do with it but how do you stay humble? >> who knows what that liberal actually wanted to do to me if he reached me to thank you for protecting me. >> it's so funny, they love you. >> you can go from zero to zero like that because ironically i know longer work at fox after having been there and having a great time and i do respect the network and appreciate so much the conservative message that they are able to get out there for the rest of the public. but you know times change and i'm not there anymore. any kind of humbleness, oh my goodness my real world is, you saw a little page of my life that is .0001% of my life. my real life is very busy, family, kids. they really don't care what you politically. they heard at school i was on saturday night live and that's about it. thankfully my kids are sharp and they are conservative and very independent so that is it spilled over onto them. but the family keeps you grounded it especially my youngest, trig. he's the one who has given our family, keeps everything in perspective for us and let us put our priorities straight letting us know what matters. i think god every day for the gift of trig and being able to keep us humble. >> a hero from hero to zero i loved. i zoned in on that. no matter in politics if you believe in anything whatsoever you've are going to go from hero to zero at some point in time and what i was struck by turning all presidential campaign and of course since has been the figure which you have been attacked and i really do attribute that to the fact that you are strong conservative woman and you present a huge threat to the liar that only leftists can support women. so when sarah palin is out there championing women and hard-working women and single moms that's a huge threat. they have come after you with laser-like position attacking your family which all of us to to -- is not fair game but that is an incredible discouragement rather women particularly conservator women women of faith who want to become engaged in the political process. when they see what you went through and what they will necessarily go through i think it's a given. conservative women put ourselves out there we will be attacked. and yet you say we have a responsibility as americans. we are the heirs of freedom which i loved so it's not a choice whether or not conservator women and women of faith get involved. how do you encourage anyone to get involved in the political process but women in particular? >> i encourage anyone to get in there. you are kind of at the billy the bees. i'll have to admit it does get pretty brutal at times because there is a stronghold in the world of politics. it's dark and it's not of god, the bad hearts of politics. again my own strength in my own wisdom and my own abilities, i can't handle it so i have to give it to god and thankfully time and time again he fills me up with peace and joy because i asked for it and i receive received it. i encourage others to do the same but now more than ever is when hugh wall, everybody needs to get involved. today we are fighting for the future of america. this is the moment and you need to be called upon to be great at this time and to be bold. if we lose our freedom, like reagan said there's nowhere else to go. there's nowhere else to turn. we are that he could not freedom for the rest of the world. if we don't fight for it because freedom isn't free, if we don't fight for it and pay a price for it then there is nowhere else to go. it's not just americans hoping for the best. all of you are hoping for the best for this country but it's innocent people around the globe who to look to america, to americans who are hard-working, patriotic, faith filled family-oriented good americans they wish to emulate. they wish to understand the steps to begin take to be prosperous and successful and healthy and safe and secure. god blessed us with the resources and the abilities to do all of that but he also then gave us the responsibility to make the most of it. so if we hunker down, if we are afraid what somebody's going to say about us, then we are not doing our job. and by the way those are just words that people at you. i remind my kids all the time, so what if somebody said something mean on the blog, don't read the blog or whatever it is. then you don't have to be burdened by it but we are told in the bible that we will be persecuted so buck up or stay in the truck. we know it's coming and we just have to deal with it. we can't hunker down. [applause] >> in "sweet freedom" you reagan lovers will see that governor palin invokes the name of ronald reagan multiple times. it's never more than one generation away from extinction again and again. tell us a little bit about ronald reagan and his importance. he said he mentioned a little bit in the beginning but how was your experience at the ranch? >> him do that you went out there but how has it impacted you? >> oh that was life changing. i've always been as they set a huge fan of reagan but to actually see where he got to hang out and he was so sincere and it wasn't funny about being out there cutting brush and working hard and doing all those things that we would see images of him on tv doing. and to actually be there where he was actually doing it. being on the horse trails where there was overgrowth or something, he used to be out there cutting that overgrowth and not photo ops that real. that was just amazing and the upkeep of reagan's ranch is so much appreciated by me and other americans and hugh wall are putting such effort into it. it's just that they get amazing. it was so impacting, so beautiful being up there that i was privileged to be on a horse ride. somebody snapped a picture and use the picture on the cover of my book america by heart because it's my favorite picture in the world. not because it's me in it, it's because it reflects reagan and his life, what he stood for. so all americana and beautiful all about natural resources, all about that work ethic that he would just exude. again those attributes, those virtues and gifts and talents that reagan was given he did put those to such good use for all of us. but he left us he had better not blow it. we had better protect what it is but build upon what it is that he left us. he left us all these good examples of what it takes to succeed and to prosper and to be happy. i think the same goes for those who serve in the military and their veterans reagan so respected and honored and was a true commander-in-chief like you would want in a commander-in-chief. i think of all the sacrifices that he is commander-in-chief than those under him in the military and those who have gone before and those serving today the sacrifices that need -- they have made again need to be called upon to protect what it is that they have left us and not let their sacrifices go in vain. with the military with president reagan hopefully we can always use reagan as their inspiration for that and on a personal note reagan means a lot in my life. my kids life. we have a dog named wilson. how many young gals get it? she gets it. name your puppy ronald wilson reagan. >> that is great. ronald reagan understood like we had young america foundation and reagan's ranch and all of you understand the importance of our college campuses and what is happening there right now. reagan made a point to reach out to college students but i was struck when i read this passage in your book "sweet freedom" when he said conservatives are accustomed to liberals seeking to control the conversation. when a liberal argument cannot withstand debate they try to silence offensive which is anything -- offensive speech and attempt to make you exchange your freedom of speech for your comfort. this is exactly what we are seeing explode right now. it's been happening for decades by the way but it's exploding on our college campuses right now. we have college students in this room, we have the next or an overflow room. we have been watching the livestreaming. they're walking on c-span. tell us, how can we help inspire these young people because they face real consequences on campuses were standing up for what they believe in. they are shipped off to sensitivity training classes, they suffer in their graves, they get persecuted by administrators. there are real consequences and yet we are training them for young america's foundation to have the courage to stand up for freedom. you are the best example of having the courage that please encourage these young people and tell them how god can give them that courage. >> absolutely. he is our courage. he is our strength. the holy spirit fills us up with that. we have to do what is asked and fill up our cup overflowing. you know better than anyone else because you are out there speaking on his campuses. you are on the frontline seeing what's going on. i think it's tragic what is going on at our campuses today and if any of you are parents of kids soon to enter college think very wisely before you write a check for tuition to the schools especially who are known for now more than ever their intolerance is what it is. they do not tolerate conservative views and they do take it out on the student who would be bold enough to stand strong on truth, on time-tested truth. you know i hear so often in that vein about parents who were writing the checks for their kids and at first i say why your parents having to pay for their kids college? what about us? it took five years to get a four-year degree because -- but that's because you work full-time. doesn't that happen anymore? not to change the subject but now we are hearing the colleges need a bailout. they need you to pay for the debt that they have incurred to go to school. that's just. that's the last thing that a college student needs to hear that someone is going to come and bail them out. [applause] i had some lowly jobs getting through school but i was able to graduate with zero debt and i'm happy for it. all of my siblings did the same but the college kids are my inspiration. the young people are my inspiration. that is hope, they are hope, the courage that they are to have. i say that without due respect, the younger generation even being here today really gives us hope. in these tumultuous times so many bad things are going on. a lot of people, and i need these people every day and i hear from people every day saying they are losing hope and gosh has america strayed so far from our judeo-christian beliefs and our foundation, can we ever get it back and is to sponsor the daycare and i sense out there, i say now look at the young people. those who are still willing to enlist in the united states military to make sacrifices for us in the military. those who can stand strong amidst this liberal atmosphere that is very very oppressive on our college campuses. look to them for inspiration for hope. don't let us down. you have to be even stronger. you do and it's a shame that pop culture would try to caricature eyes a conservative college student as being one that is intolerant and not smart enough to know what's going on in the world because they are not following in somebody's liberal footsteps. we can infiltrate culture to change that. we can't give up on pop culture because politics is downstream from pop-culture. we need to not just leave it to the left to be in charge of dictating to what our pop culture is going to be about. you who are talented in the arts, writers and it hurts, musicians get in there and use those gifts that god has given you for good. don't just leave it to the left to the liberals to take over that most influential aspect of our society pop-culture and of course pop-culture being so instrumental in the shaping of college students minds. >> i'm going to shift gears a little bit. we have a president who cannot utter the words radical islam and as there were resolved i think he's endangering our country. think he's endangering human beings by not calling it what it is. you talk about it in "sweet freedom" on several occasions and i so appreciate your courage in doing that. how do we christians articulate the very real threat of radical islam? we must articulate about it we do that not play into that liberal narrative that we are close minded and intolerant and we are targeting certain groups of people? >> when we are slapped with that label of being warmongers or racist or islamophobe lake, hugh kewell that label off your forehead that thing that they want to stick you with. you don't let them define you and it is quite perplexing that we do have a commander in chief who cannot recognize the enemy who thinks the change in the weather is more important than what we are facing with terrorism, with radical islamic fundamentalists. he's so underestimates the wisdom of the people. the majority of americans believe don't have a problem with seeing what's out there in understanding such a threat that's coming our way. george bush was so right when president bush said we are going to get the bad guys over there so they don't come over here. look what's happening. we pulled out over the air. the left these vacuums have been filled with more powerful islamic fundamentalist and they are coming over here. 2016 can't come soon enough and to be able to elect a commander in chief and that's how you should look at this election, not just someone who's going to be over handle the economy which is a whole nother story and what a mess we have there and not just someone who will deal with so many of the specific issues that are challenging america but look at it as he was going to be our commander-in-chief who understand what it is that we are facing in respect united states military, let them do their job. we can utterly and forever destroy isis. we have the manpower, the firepower. we have the will and the boots that are ready to go. we need the political will from on top and until we get a commander in chief and by the way we are. now obama said we would not have is on the ground in other parts of the world to deal with this. now we have boots on the ground. i think that's a pretty scary thing because under this commander-in-chief and i have a son who has served and been deployed a couple of times, can we hang in there and wait until we have a new commander-in-chief and the utterly and finally destroy isis instead of letting them come on over here, infiltrate the innocence that is america. we haven't done anything wrong to deserve what it is that they want to do to us. paris didn't do anything wrong and asking for them to come on over and tried to destroy them either. israel does nothing wrong when there are hearing anyway that isis and the muslim fundamentalists want to destroy them to. that's why i consider us relatively speaking as the innocence. we have the ability to destroy the threat that is against us. we just need a commander in chief who knows how to yell fire amen. [applause] >> and "sweet freedom" you don't pull any punches when it comes to talking to christians. you point out that we can't be hypocrites. you talk about some of the silliness of rigidity and legalism and that sort of thing that you really did point out that it's you and me, those of us here those of us across the country who love liberty. there were neighbors who saw everything that they were silent. they were afraid that they would be called a name and i think so often well-intentioned christians hide from the news. they don't share with their children about what's going on in the world to try to protect them. they are afraid of being called names and you say in "sweet freedom" that again we are heirs of freedom that our forefathers sacrificed for us and we have responsibility to stand up for that sacrificing you put beautifully when he said rise up no more hunkering down, shirking civic responsibilities by being so concerned with the kingdom of heaven that you neglect your duties down here on earth. i think that is so true. what will the devastating consequences to freedom be a freedom loving americans continue to shirk their responsibilities? >> there will be no freedom on earth. as i said as reagan would say and as he did say the beacon of hope that is america that light for the rest of the world to see what freedom brings you, this is god-given freedom that we have. we didn't do it ourselves. god gave this to us to our lord that we would defend the gift he has given us with freedom. thank you for the compliment that i wrote that beautifully because there are some things in there that i didn't write so beautifully when i called out pastors. this milk toast mandy pammy bonilla type of servant, the kind of kumbaya stuff getting along to go along when the people are from the pulpit so far they have the freedom to speak truth. certainly government liberals and their attacks on our religion. they are free to tell us the truth and responsibility as shippers to tell us the truth so to quit being so milquetoast about it. part of the problem though where many perhaps have become that middle-of-the-road trying to get along with everybody instead of calling it like they see it and like the word tells us, do you ever find it a little bit odd that the depictions of jesus that we see this long beautiful flowing hair in his robes and his flip-flops, maybe they believe that is the persona of jesus to be christlike so we are supposed to be that. jesus was a warrior. he was a fighter for justice. even physically. remember he went into the temple overturned the money changers because they were ripping people off. he said for justice. even told his disciples, i think jesus was for open carry. jesus told his disciples hey we are going a journey. pick up your arms. back in the day the arms meant a sword. he said if you have a cloak but but -- sell your cloak and let's go. let's go forth and conquer and defend yourself. don't rely on others to do it. you can't rely on government to do it for us that we are to be self-sufficient in that respect not so self efficient or we wouldn't rely on god's strength of course that we are expected to take action to defend freedom and to fight for justice and to defend the innocent. god has given us the ability to do so and he doesn't drive parked cars. he expects us to get out there and take action and move forward with those of the essence to the swift. there is much that we can do to be involved and i think that we need to hunker down and not allow our pastors to get away with that man bp and be preaching. we can tell your pastor is hey we have got your back. i tried to tell that to the republicans in congress. don't campaign one way and get in their governor another way. we have seen too many tea party friends go that route. that's the disappointing so i talked to them i say trust me you have our respect. we will have your back. the more you strengthen your spine the more we strengthen our spine to follow you and just be able to encourage them encourage our leaders in the church to now more than ever speak truth and act on it. >> does it say devotional. "sweet freedom" is a devotional and every day you read and you have bible person and you have a call to action. i freedom call to action. in it i got that it's not just just -- her point is restoration of america of all that is good and sweet and true and right about america. has to do with personal transformation but it also has to do with living out their faith and acting out what we believe that i would like to hear what you say about why that's important that we be in the word every day and that we do a devotional every day and then what's the connection between that personal transformation what's going to happen in our world? >> the lord says hide the word in our heart and will never depart from us meaning we will be eyes to -- bielat colon that wisdom that is so prevalent obviously in the old and new testament. i wrote the book in layman's terms so much so that even i can understand what it is. i pick a first i write a little bit of commentary about it and much of the commentary at the end of the day ended up being my admittance to a lot of things i haven't done right so hopefully people can learn from my mistakes. never setting myself up for my family up as holier than thou. that's my pet peeve about christians by the way. don't come across as holier than thou, we are all a mess. we are all in the same boat. as you point out kate that call to action. writing it for not just church folk that my own family is very diverse. i wrote a page in hear about that. my surroundings in alaska. i work with commercial fishermen everyday who cuss like sailors and tatted up soldiers who have no patience for political correctness and the truck drivers and car hearts and steel toed boots and hard-working normal people out there. some of them are ceos meaning church on christmas and easter only ceos. and bless their hearts though they have the right intentions and they do have faith. they just want to know where can they go to get some answers because the things we are doing right right now to address the challenges that we see in our country and even personally because we are all fighting a battle. we all have huge challenges but to not lose that hope in that faith. they want to know what can we do because what we are doing isn't working right now relying on government. it's great public policy in the next trend in pop culture. the trajectory that we are on is not going up, going down so how do we restore and turn some things around? amazingly in the old and new testament for specific answers for what it is we face today is all written in there. i just wanted to create this guideline to let people know and if you don't like it take it up with god. he's the one who wrote the first. he is the one who inspired the written words and i just kind of commented about it according to my own life experience. it's written in that way so anybody should be able to understand and take something from it but another secret is to open it and you read a page you do have to ask. to open your eyes open your ears to what it is he's going to tell you to apply based on what it is that you read. he never fails you there either. right then that day some people pop up where you are like oh man that promise, that verse that parable to look important example. i'm glad i have an answer and it came from his word. >> i find it incredibly inspiring and it is real just like you, it is real and that was one of the best parts about it. i could ask 100 more questions and monopolize this entire event but andrew says i can't so i would like to ask her some questions from the audience. we will have some folks appear with microphones. just raise your hand high and we will get some questions. >> be sure to speak in the mic. >> hi. >> of yours students tell us where you are from and what school you went to. >> i'm a city college at santa barbara. a lot of times on campus we face this moral relativism and we are called to opposite truth and how would you call that bias and how do you do that gracefully? >> there is power in numbers and you don't forget the fact that there are more robust than there are of them. not necessarily spirit-filled hard-core went to church sunday morning wednesday night and served as christians but i'm talking about people with common sense and those who do have some kind of sense there are more of us than there are of them. kind of capitalizing on that power, that strength in numbers you can always rely on that. the most important thing is to be bold. you have to be bold and think of the situations you find yourself in when the surroundings at school, you know they are wrong and you know if you've are going to be slapped with some kind of negative label if you call them out on being wrong but if you don't do it who will? as we talk a little bit before if you shy away from it and you hunker down you have to ask yourself if i don't stand strong and speak truth and know what i'm talking about, and you have to do your homework and understand what the issues are seeking combat that with the facts and figures, if you don't do it it's not going to get done. so encourage one another and again don't forget there is power and strength in numbers. >> we have numbers on our side. >> i am mark price are and i'm not a student that i'm a boilermaker. my question is, your focus was on commander-in-chief so which one of the candidates would you point to for that? >> my person will be and there is still a lot of time and there really is a lot of time in many debates coming up for us to be able to figure out what the intention is of each of these candidates and what their track record proves that variable to accomplish. my candidate will be someone who hasn't been a part of the problem and hasn't promised a whole lot of things that in campaigns and had us come to you, a lot of us working hard to get them elected. and have that bubble deflated when they got into office and they started voting for the debt ceiling increases and engorged budgets all because well you know that's her leadership and our their party was telling us we had to do it or we would get shut down. i'm not looking for that. status quo has got to go. my candidate will no doubt be an outsider and there are even one or two running that i consider as outsiders despite having a label, a nametag, an office in washington d.c.. they are still maverick enough that they are talking the tide with their own party to do the right thing for the people. i am ratcheting it down to a few but it'll definitely be somebody who holds no punches and in a debate against hillary because it will be hillary on the other side. all this speculation that they have this competitive primary and it's going to be a surprise. it's orchestrated so whomever it is will be the fighter on stage in debate against hillary and not care that they are going to have -- they are going to have census label slapped on them. whoever can say i don't care and then whomever it will end up has got to be the person, obama promises he will fundamentally transform america. he will be the person who will know how to fundamentally restore america, those virtues as we said. [applause] >> hi my name is haley smith and i go to podesta junior college in the san joaquin valley and i was recently at his speech and debate tournament. i was told by a professor that was judging in this round that i was then that i needed to watch my rhetoric and that i was both a racist and a proponent of coulter which was odd because he was in his early 30s, a man telling me this. but i just wonder what would you say to a conservative christian woman, how would you respond to such comments like that? >> wow. can you imagine if they reverse reverse -- wow if it were conservative professor up there telling some liberal hey you sound whatever that guy would be fired. how did you respond? [inaudible] >> i would be shocked and i would know how to answer. [laughter] it's shocking. you could always say you are really sorry that you have to write his salary check for tuition. that's really sad that you have to do that. just with a smile in your face just rub it in and keep doing what you are doing because you are right. he really has no right to do that to you as a student, as a young woman. he has no right to do that. granted we have our military men and women sacrificing their lives so he does have the right to do so but what a disrespectful thing that man put you through. but stay strong and not you, you are still happy. that's inspiration. [applause] >> i think we can take one final question. >> hi governor perry thanks for coming. i'm a professor at santa barbara college. i'm one of six conservatives on campus. [applause] my question is as a woman who has run for public office before what advice would you give to carly fiorina? >> i've been waiting for her to really bust out and be so candid and not candor let's be so candid and tell us what she's thinking about a lot of these issues. that hasn't really happened yet so for what it's worth, my device, i would encourage her to not let any high-priced consultants who try to run your campaign for you melody went to something that is politically correct and middle-of-the-road on some issues. now, we want that candidness. tell us what you really think and i think that is what has been lacking in her campaign. i say this because i'm not through the same thing after having years and local office, state office and then on a national level and before running on the national level. i always ran my own campaign in my own living room the stamps and knocking on doors. so i never had anybody telling me what i should or shouldn't say. that was sweet freedom and it was great. i want all the races so it meant something. lo and behold i get to a national level we didn't win that one, did we? someone tried to tell me and us what to do and what to say and trying to judge the audience and how to shape your message so it's received by the audience. that did a lot of good, didn't it? came in second out of two. that's pretty lousy. that's why donald trump is so popular, not only because he has practical solutions but it's pretty practical to say you build a wall, a fence that keeps illegal immigrants out another common things -- common sense things that would shot him to the forward was that candidness. that should inspire the other candidates hopefully it does, to be even less guarded and not let a filter come between you and the people who doma you are willing and wanting to serve. trump has been a good example with that and hopefully carly will do the same. >> i just want to say thank you. i know andrew is going to thank you for the foundation of personally as a conservative woman like you and these other women in a conservative young people and those that are out there trying to fight the fight this was incredibly inspiring for me. i think as a nation our president took candidates better read it but it's an important book for her country. we are at a turning point in either we are going to dig deep and have the courage to stand up and accept the title of heirs of freedom that we are going to an freedom away. that's what this book is about. god bless you for writing it and thank you so much for being here. >> i appreciate that so much. thank you. [applause] >> thank you, bless you. so nice. thank you guys. >> the standing ovation is more than appropriate but i will ask you to take your seats again for just a moment longer. did our friends in the overflow room enjoy the program? i thought so. i do want to thank you both for being here and governor since you mentioned the book cover i do have to say that is one of my few claims to fame is that of course it great john barletta was leaving the riot that day at the ranch and i was on horseback by and doing a photograph. .. >> >> talk to be or one of my l
