i treat this like a sport. so, engaging. making sure that the crowd is into it. making sure that the band, they're playing their part. as cerebral like it is. that they have to connect to. so adam on the ban. he had them smacking. >> i think that people had no idea what was coming. you walk out on stage, they're carrying a stack. people are going to lay back for some kenny g. >> you know, it's so crazy that you say that. because i think that miles davis was instrumental because he always had his pulse on the culture. the culture is a living organism. that, when it moves with it. we have to move it. the culture makes the roles. so i think that sometimes we cannot cut off the culture, and then move jazz to the suburbs. and let it just live without the culture dictating where to go. so the cast like robert glass, what they do is, the culture makes the rules and we just follow it. the rights of passage, because we are standing on the shoulders of izzy gillespie, the great was been of jazz. sarah, von elizabeth fitzgerald. charlie parker. that show is about that. >> all present tonight, they are all president tonight. >> they were present tonight, they were, present and you. so many performers, she was there, in person, watching this happened. i do want to quickly mentioned, we all have someone in common, i think with most of the world. huge prince fans. we were devastated when he left this earth, and you got a front row seat to see what prince was all about. because you played with him? >> yes, he asked me to be in the new power generation. he looked me in the eye and i stared at him, and fell in love for about three seconds. >> we all did not! >> i was like, i don't want to look, and then i said oh my god! >> and that's how i hooked up with my brother, he brought people together in the name of what it is to have great performances, but also, prince talk me about the nicholas brothers. he went back in history so you are not gonna get on stage with him unless you understood the history of the significance of what it is to have, to be a real musician. >> steph is out there, stephanie if you have any questions. i know you just saw him and lost your mind. >> i did, and because i had already, i saw him before he left here, i'll be honest, i was like mike phillips! and now, i said, i'm just gonna call you mike philly. and on top of it, i was watching the crowd and was like, okay saxophone man. okay, all right, sir. and at the end of it, everyone is on their feet. people were, the mines were blown. and then not just to play the notes, but dancing, and jumping while he was playing the notes. it was fantastic. but here's the thing, i have been listening to your music, mike philly, and i am trying to figure out how gonna play lift y voice and sing, the black national anthem. and then also do a rendition of threes company? religion the tv show we used to watch as kids, he got that on his album. the man has range, you have no idea. [laughter] >> while, you talk about, i think what inspires me, like three company. when i'm covering that, my mother used to, that was her favorite show. so music, when you get to tap into nostalgic moments, and retrospectively go back to moments that made you feel good. what made me feel good was watching my mother sit down and laugh at jack trooper. so musically i wanted to recreate that. and with list every voice and saying? i am a 1000% melon native, unapologetic black man. who wants to let people understand that even though america has some great opportunities, we have to retrospectively go back and understand the words of lift every voice and sing. let us march on until victory is won. and if it has not been one, then the song is a beautiful mantra to keep marching and hoping, and wishing for the best. while making everyone accountable for where america is right now. but it can get better. if we all work together. >> mike, it has been a privilege to share this concert, this holiday, with all of you. and you gentlemen. and you stephanie and everyone at cnn. happy juneteenth. mike phillips, as a gift to us and the rest of the world that is watching, can we play a sound? >> definitely, i can play what we just talked about. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ can help you open those doors. for you,u, mama. through personalized money management that can evolve with new chapters. and they can proactively view your entire portfolio. with an eye on taxes and the impact of risk. so you can enjoy moments together. because doors were meant to be opened. we know patients are more than their disease. that's why, at novo nordisk, we've spent a hundred years developing treatments to help unlock humanity's full potential. these are the greats: people living with, thriving with — not held back by — disease. they motivate us to fight diabetes and obesity, rare diseases and cardiovascular conditions, for generations to come. so, everyone can meet their moment. because your disease doesn't define you. so, what will? novo nordisk. driving change. >> woman: why did i choose safelite? i love my electric car, so when my windshield got cracked, i trusted the experts at safelite. with their state-of-the-art technology, they replaced the windshield, recalibrated the car's camera, and then recycled my old glass. i found out safelite recycles over three million windshields a year. great job! >> tech: thank you! >> woman: replace, recalibrate, recycle. i count on safelite. ♪ rock music ♪ >> singers: ♪ safelite repair, safelite replace. ♪
