>> ernesto which performed left afternoon, still a tropical storm. winds at 45 miles an hour. the last few hours it weakened and you can see here not nearly as robust, but you look in the eastern caribbean and it looks clear and ready to bomb out, but there wins and dry air in there that allows us to do that. it will be slow to go as far as development. right now it's just to the east of st. lucia. it went past barbados overnight. here's the track for the hurricane center. keeping at tropical storm strength and potentially developing into a hurricane as it cruises through the caribbean. probably not until towards jamaica and the yucatan is when winds are expected to be more favorable. an important note is get closer to the gulf of mexico by the time we get to the beginning of next week. all eyes on this for the lower parts of the u.s. ernesto making a run potentially at the u.s. >> menacing. thank you very much, rob. >> in washington house republicans have been forced to close a loophole in the new stock act law. that was uncovered by us. the crack down on "the insider" trading. it requires lawmakers to report all stock trades within 45 days. members of the house had an entering interpretation and didn't think the law applied to spouses or dependents. the bill's sponsor was not pleased. >> i find out nmz and i tell my wife and she trades on it, what's the difference? track and field under way. women begin their quest for the 100 meter title including allyson felix who tied with na an amazing photo finish in the qualifiers. what can we expect today? >> i think you struggle to expect that one again. i'm not sure we are ever going to see that. double the number of people here at the olympic park. the action is already under way. you can hear the cheers behind us and the women's heptathlon and hurdles heats are well under way and a great sense of excitement. some people say this is where the games really begin. we have the heats as you said. allyson felix had to defend her position after that. some suggesting she should have been the that conceded the place in the olympic games in the 100 meters to her younger rival really. we also have got the 10,000 meters women's final and the first medal that will be awarded and the men's shot. plenty to look forward to. >> live in london for us, thank you very much. >> let's be clear. there is not a lot of money to be made betting against michael phelps. 33 minutes past the hour and back here at home, nearly half of the continental u.s. is experiencing severe, severe drought conditions. this crisis is getting bigger. not since the 30s has the country been hit by a drought like this. the hardest hit, 95% of the state of arkansas is in severe to exceptional drought. missouri and kansas and nebraska with temperatures expected to reach 100 degrees. >> insult to injury. drought-sticken farmers and ranchers looking for help from congress can forget about it for now. the house took up a $383 million relief bill yesterday. they wouldn't consider it and congress adjourned for the summer. they will take up the issue after labor day. a democrat from michigan is chair woman of the senate agriculture committee. she would rather pass a five-year farm bill than a short-term fix. >> congress and ranchers want us to get our job done and express disaster assistance. i intend to do both. 30 days only makes a difference for those trying to play politics. >> john boehner doesn't think he has enough votes to even get a five-year bill passed right now. >> they are not doing anything and that's insult to injury. we could be looking at the beginnings of a hurricane in the atlantic ocean. rob, what's going on? >> it's a tropical storm at this time. yesterday it was just a depression. still a weak tropical storm. 45 mile an hour winds. we are playing aircraft in and out of there. it doesn't look impressive right now, but it will run into air that is not exactly conducive for rapid development. we are not terribly concerned about it right now. right over st. lucia at the moment. they are getting heavy rain, that's for sure. here's the forecast track that runs the center of the caribbean and dive south or over jamaica. later in the period towards the end of the weekend is when we think it will get to hurricane status. this is what is concerning here. the yucatan peninsula into the gulf of mexico by the beginning or middle of next week. all eyes here. the folks in oklahoma would like to get cloud cover. 112 yesterday in oklahoma. heat advisory out for this part of the world. this is exacerbating the drought that expanded as of yesterday morning. >> all right, rob. on one of the tracks taking it right into the gulf of mexico. >> 36 minutes past the hour, waste, mismanagement and employee theft at amtrak appears to be off the rails. according to auditors, they are losing over $80 million a year on the food and beverage service alone. get this. congress passed a law in 1981 requiring the railroad's food and beverage business to break even every year and it never happened not even once. here's why. amtrak charges passengers $2 for a soft drink, but it costs them about $3.40 to serve each beverage. when you add in the labor costs. a hamburger goes for $9.50, but it costs $16 for each they sell. throw in up to $7 million a year in employee theft and amtrak cost taxpayers $834 million over the last decade. those are remarkable numbers. >> crazy numbers. if you sell hamburgers at a loss, that's why you lose. a man was so upset over a recent arrest that he wanted pay back and he did it monster truck style. 34-year-old roger got a tractor to crush parked plus cruisers. do not try this at home. he was arrested a mile and a half away by other officers. they could chase him because they didn't have working cars at the scene. >> 40 years after they divorced, a couple is giving marriage another shot. 48 years after they divorced. lina henderson and roland got married as teenagers. 20 years, four children later, they divorced. both remarried and lost their spouses, but they never lost touch. >> we are the oldest couple that he is married and he said it's very exciting. you nervous? we saw job growth in the interim but we're back in the stuck in neutral kind of zone. it's very political three months to go until the election. there will be something in this report for each campaign. what i suspect you'll hear from the republicans, you'll hear this is a record period of time but above 8% unemployment. they'll be right. what you'll hear from the democrats in the white house in 28 or 29 straight months of private sector job growth, they'll be right too. there's a lot of numbers for everybody to have a piece of. this is that terrible recession and financial crisis. this was devastation for the labor market and american and families. this all has been since then an attempt to try to recover from that. we have not brought those jobs back. we have an economy starting to slow a little bit again. it's pretty important what happens here. a lot of people like to see something better than 95,000. there was a private sector number, earlier this week, the payroll processing firm, they were judging maybe it could be 163,000 jobs. so the risk is as they say in economics, the risk is on the upside here. some people are thinking it could be stronger than what the economists think, $95,000. >> i have one quick question, that other graph that you had up in the summer, does that typically happen? >> it does actually. it's something you can see a little bit less job growth in the summer and another part of the story, if you read in the new york times and economics blog, people are asking whether there are seasonal adjustment and technical reasons where the numbers look weaker in the summer. this isn't enough to get all families back to work who need to get back to work. >> very good point. thank you. >> on monday, mars will have a brand-new occupant. a rover named curiosity and slated to touch down inside a crater on the red planet's surface in what scientists are calling the most harrowing landing attempted on the martian surface. we want to find out all about. charles bolden is a former astronaut and joins me now to walk through the complexity of curiosity's mission. this is really fascinating. first off, tell me where they are going and why. the gale crater, what kind of promise does it hold there? >> it's in theegion of mars and we're going there because all of our previous indications from mars reconnaissance orbiter, other rovers and satellites say it's a good place to go if we want to determine whether there are signs that the martian surface could sustain life in its past, today or most particularly in its future when we plan to send humans there in the 203 0es. >> down in the crater there may be some signs of life and things you can see and curiosity will sift through and get a sense of what's going on there. one of other things everyone is talking about, how exactly this device will get to the martian surface. this is something i've never seen before, no one has ever seen before. it's a flying crane or winch thing. you see it exploding and the bottom goes off and another spacecraft comes out and it's lowered by cables onto the martian surface. some of your sign sicientists a calling this seven minutes of terror. this seems risky. >> it's pretty risky but we need to have a relatively precise landing. if you can imagine going into the grand canyon where we can look at the history of earth really in that area as we look at various strata. that's what landing in the crater allows us to do. it will look across the history of the planet mars in the two years it's there. it's a harrowing experience. seven minutes of terror but that's why we are nasa because we like to do things like that. we love risky things but we're confident. >> you're in the business of harrowing i suppose. it isn't easy if it does get on ground savely. we have so many questions how you control this device there. a nasa scientist said the problem with controlling a device like this, remote control is the speed of light. the one way light time to mars right now is 14 minutes. by the time we hit stop after seeing a big rock in front of the rover, it's probably too late. the 14-minute gap makes you hard to control. how do you keep it out of trouble? >> a lot of its activity is programmed. we'll program it and put data in the computer and said this is what we want you to do today and look for. and it will do that. robots are pretty sophisticated today. i have to remind everybody, this is what points out the difference and reason we want to put humans on the planet. a robot is a robot and can't reason today and make chances of that looks like an interesting rock, i'm going to get it anyway. it's important to use this as a precursor for putting humans there. >> i hope you come back after it lands early monday morning. thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you very much. >> oh, my gosh, that is the coolest thing ever. unbelievable. a victory of sorts for the late michael jackson's mom. the latest chapter in the jackson family drama, coming up. what if they miss? how hard for her will it be to keep her head in the competition? >> it is hard especially after winning the all-around gold and team gold. she has a good selt of teammates and coaches to help her stay focused until the end. >> reading about the journey she has taken. she left her house in virginia beach two years ago and left her family to train in des moines, live with another family there. there were a lot of people who didn't think she had the focus to do this. you sacrifice so much to compete. tell us what you have to do to even get to where she is right now. >> so much. it is so much hard work, so many hours in the gym. and yeah, with gabby having to sacrifice being away from her family and not seeing them for the last couple of years or seeing them very few times, it's a lot of hard work. i don't think the general public rerealizes how much work goes into becoming an olympian in a sport. it's 24/7, 365 days a year. >> you're a gymnast. what's your next favorite olympic sport to watch? >> the whole point is we should play by the exact same rules as every other citizen. when all of america looks at washington, they know it's broken. >> because of cnn's reporting, the senate and house passed new legislation yesterday that closes a loophole that could have allowed family members of some lawmakers to profit from inside stock information. waste management and employee theft at amtrak appears to be off the rails. amtrak is losing over $80 million a year on its food and beverage service alone. congress passed a law requiring the railroad's food and beverage business to break even every year. it has never happened once. amtrak charges passengers $2 for a soft drink but it cost the railroad about $3.40 to serve each beverage when you add the labor cost. a hamburger $9.50 but cost $16 for each one they sell. $7 million in employee theft and amtrak cost $834 million over the past decade. >> stunning report. >> hurricane season has been relatively calm in the atlantic this year until now. we're tracking tropical storm ernesto where he's headed and when. coming up. f morocco. have you seen this road we're going down? had four early on then took a break. now ernesto is cranking up, 40 miles per hour winds, took a couple of steps back but moving to the west at 24 miles per hour and that's quick and that's one of the reason it's having a hard time exploding in intensity. some action as far as heavy rainfall. tropical storm warnings out there. it will get into the caribbean, drier air there as well. between that and the sheer it will take its time developing but it's got a lot of real estate to work with as far as the amount of water here and it's toasty. most of our computer models bring it through the caribbean and some intense fiction is likely especially as it gets closer to the gulf of mexico towards the beginning of next week as a hurricane. we'll watch it closely. heat continues to build and stuck on the side of a cliff for two days hanging on four your life. that is what happened to larry bishop, an experienced hiker from california. he went for a hike with friends and got separated and they couldn't find him. alerted the fresno sheriff's office and the search began. two days later, luckily they found him. hanging on to a ledge 600 feet above ground. the fresno county sheriff's search and rescue team risks their lives to bring him to safety and larry bishop is grateful to be here to tell us his story of surviving for two days off the side of a cliff. we are so happy to see you alive and well. tell me exactly what happened once you got away from the folks that you were hiking with. >> i went up to the top of the peak, saw some outward bound kids and teachers and uneventful. went down the peak and thought i found an easy way down. it was a little hard coming up, jumping boulders, i thought i would take the easy way down based on the signs i saw. it turned out to be a drainage ditch to the east side of the mountain and led on to a very slippery steep granite. >> we're taking a look at it right now and it looks like it would be tough to hang on there and to walk that or climb it even. >> yeah, after a few skids, a couple of skids, very scary, i found a hole in one of the rocks and some dirt in it. i was able to plant myself there and plant my poles and hang on for a night. so i didn't slide any further. i was just about a week ago today and then i -- then i had after that i had a trying to get to a safer, more visible spot, i lost it and slid about 100 yards and fortunately banged into some berm or something and cut myself up, bruised myself. >> you were injured at that point and you were stuck >> uh-huh. >> what happened? how did you survive? you weren't expecting to go on a long hike. >> no i was going to drop my water back to the entrance to the peak area and expected to be back in 15 minutes after taking a few shots and so i had basically a long sleeve shirt like i'm wearing now, thin cargo pants and hiking boots, which saved me and my hat, that really saved me. and so that's what i had. i became dehydrated pretty quickly. >> i hear you ate plants in order to survive? >> yes, they were actually very tasty in the crevices of these granite plates, very safery, except they had no water value so it dried my mouth out. so i stopped that. but i wasn't -- >> i'm sorry to interrupt you. i was reading at one point you said either i'm going to get rescued or i'm going to die here. did you feel that you were going to lose your life? >> yeah, i didn't know what rescue efforts were going on. i assume they are looking for me but we were in a very remote area and even to contact the sheriff was going to be difficult. so i -- my hiking partner, she raced across the wilderness to a useable phone and got in contact with a sheriff and started the search on friday. >> i know you were hallucinating, at one point you thought there were rescuers to get you and there really weren't? >> yeah, i saw campers down there ignoring me, kind of a mirage. and when i was yelling for help. then i saw these unmarked helicopters circling around me, staring at me. i think i created these rescuers in my mind. it was towards the end of the day, not long -- no, it was -- >> larry, the rescuers did finally show up and somebody risked their life in order to save you, right? >> yeah, they showed up and in fact, i was on my last leg, i was quifring on my last step standing down and i saw orange suits, four or five guys and that gave me hope. i hung on and dug i and then one fellow, david griffey, detective david griffey, he ran up with no regard to his personal safety and just ran up the hill and depinned me from the rock. >> you wanted to honor them today because you are here because of them. >> oh, yes, and also he wouldn't have been there if it weren't for the volunteers of the fresno search and rescue.org. these people don't get paid a dime. they train themselves and equip themselves and they really all over the country they need volunteers and they could use a few bucks to help with training and -- >> thank you. >>
