Path. Cnns Team Coverage of the storm begins right now. Good morning. Welcome to early start. Im christine romans. Im Miguel Marquez. It is september 2nd. 5 00 a. M. Here on the east coast. Hermine now a Tropical Storm with winds of 70 miles an hour. When the storm made landfall in the panhandle this morning, it was a category one hurricane with winds of 80 miles an hour. Heavy rain and high storm surge and flooding along the florida gulf coast. Now Tropical Storm hermine powering across southern georgia where the governor has declared a state of emergency. Millions of residents all along the storms path up to the carolinas under watches and warnings. Preparing for the worst. Earlier, Florida Governor rick scott making clear hermine is dangerous. Its life threatening. We will see big storm surge. We will see a lot of rain. We will see flooding. We will see downed power lines. We will see a lot of risk if we dont do our job. Everybody needs to be prepared. We are blessed with the best emergency teams in the country and state and local level. We have a Great National guard, but you have to take this seriously. How big is hermine . This nasa image shows it obscuring almost all of florida. We are covering the story only cnn can with Polo Sandoval live in st. Marks, florida. Polo, what are you seeing now . Reporter miguel, there are two ways to get to st. Marks. One way is completely flooded and the other way is impassible. You see the tree blocking the road here up to st. Marks. The small city in National Weather service in florida. This is keeping the authorities from reaching the area. I spoke to an official a few moments ago. He had to call for help to remove the tree. He said they are not able to make it to the city to see how wide spread and significant the damage is. Most importantly, to check in on some of the people who decided to stay behind and ride out the storm. I spoke to a woman who owns one of the few Grocery Stores in town who rode out the storm 11 years ago and decided to ride out this one as well. That is the main concern for people who decided to stay behind. Also to keep people off the roadways. I can tell you schools and government offices are closed in and around the area. This is a way to keep people at home according to officials. When it comes to rescues, we have not heard of any significant rescues taking place. There was one woman and her children had to be removed from her home after the tree fell on top of it. It is my understanding they made it out of the home unharmed. That is the concern when the storm blew through the region with those extremely heavy winds was for the toppled trees and for the flooding concern. We know there is a high tide danger as well. So combine that with the storm surge and you are, at least we expect 3 to 4 feet of water to cover roadways, and make its way to the homes down the street from where we are standing. As soon as we get there, we will get a better idea of what the damage is like in st. Marks. That is one of the cities that is closest to where the eye of hermine made landfall. A small place, st. Marks, but how wide a swath of damage and how wide of flooding occur . Reporter it is interesting. Tallahassee is a drive north here. The impact is the Power Outages. When it comes to the southern region, it is two to three miles that officials want to take a closer look at to see how wide spread that devastation is. I understand after speaking to a deputy, there are about 600 people who call this area home. A majority of them had evacuated and most importantly, were told that the Electrical Company shutdown this portion of the power grid. Essentially, some of the people who lived here were in the dark before the storm made its way on to land. That, according to authorities, helped a tremendous amount. Until we are able to make our way into the city, we wont be able to say how high the flood waters are and maybe if there are any potential individuals that have to be rescued. So interesting. The fickle nature of the storms where you can be 100 miles away and have Power Outages and move to the west a bit with flooding and storm surge. It will be different depending on the thumb print of the storm. We know nathan deal, the governor of georgia, i almost said atlanta. There is a state of emergency there. People watching, polo, and see downed trees and hear crickets and frogs, it is not so bad. A Tropical Storm with 7 70mileanhour winds is not devastating. Rick scott, the Florida Governor, said we will not be able to get out yet to help people. What is your message for people who have not had the storm yet . Reporter the be pictures speak for themselves. When you look at this, you are able to see the potential for extreme damage and injury had there been a vehicle on the roadway. I think this does speak to what authorities want the rest of the public to be aware of in the carolinas and in georgia. The storm does begin to weaken after making landfall, but it does pack the punch. What will help, however, is that calm after the storm. You mentioned the frogs. You can stay quiet for a second. You are able to really take in the calm environment. The wind does tend to kick up once and a while, but this is allowing authorities to get on the road and begin the removal process of the debris. Polo sandoval, thank you. Keep yourself safe. The calm after the storm. It is not calm further up the coast. Joining us now is tray morrison. Thank you for joining us, mr. Morrison. What are you dealing with today . It is a big day for recovery for us. We literally have hundreds of trees down. Dozens. More than we have been able to keep up with. Lines down. Probably a good 50 to 60 of the county will be without power for the next day or so. Winds last night got so bad that the Power Companies and fire rescue probably all pulled out. Public works pulled out between 10 00 and 11 00. By midnight, we had to start pulling deputies out for their safety. As we are getting back into the neighborhoods, trying to assess and figure out how were going to safely do this. The biggest part will be the biggest work will be up to the Power Company because as these lines are down in neighborhoods, they cant just turn the power on because they have your home hooked up. It will be a day or two of intense work for the Power Companies and public works. Were still right now with a lot of power out. Businesses will not be up and running. Were asking the public to please if you can stay home. If it is not an emergency, this is not the time to be outside to see the damage. It really hampers us and it is an unsafe environment. That is a really good warning for people. There may be people who want to see the damage to the neighborhood or town. You are saying just sit tight. You need a day or two of work to get this safely done. A lot of work the power crews have to do and public works. The bottom line is stay home. Yes, maam. We need at least a good day before people want to get out and travel. I would say after this first 24 hours after the storm, most roadways will be up and safe. Now we have a few hours here of high tide which was 3 40 for us. With the tidal surge, we are thankful we did not get what we thought which was 9 feet. We got closer to 5 or 6 feet. In the next few hours, hopefully, water will start as high tide gets out of here and storm surge gets out of here, some of the areas st. Marks and panacea and hopefully the water on the roads will clear out. We can check these places and make sure theyre safe. As the power lines get off the road. We have a lot of roads impassible with the trees and power lines down. So much so that we dont have enough deputies to put out. We have a lot with barricades. If somebody has to travel and they come up on the barricades, please dont try to go around them. They are there for a reason. We are trying to protect you. Theres something bad there that were trying to say not to go around or get involved with. Its going to be stressful to continue on. I know it has been stressful as the storm came onshore and such. We have been here through it. For us, it continues for the next day or so. I find it hard to believe it has been so long since florida was directly hit by a hurricane. Were you ready . Are you short of anything . Yeah. Looking back, im sure i can find something to complain about. To be honest, we started gearing up a few days before this. We started getting our plan together. Public works started getting their plan together with fire and rescue. Because we have over the years gone through the storms hey, we live on the coast. We know it will come eventually. Weve got good plans in place. Takes a little bit of the thinking out of it for us and makes it more resources we have and plug them in. It has definitely been a team effort between everybody from the Power Company and fire rescue and public works and the Sheriffs Office. And state agencies and florida Highway Patrol and wildlife commissions. Im sure when we look back at this at the end of this and do a Self Assessment with the people that are involved, we will find things that we could have done better. So far, to our knowledge, we have not had any injuries. To be quite honest, that is the biggest thing to us. Nobody got hurt. Absolutely. You have a couple of days of cleaning up to do. You hope people will not be too complacent. It is a big deal and there can be dangers lurking below the waters and corners with the trees. Thank you so much for joining us. I appreciate it. Let you get back to work. All the best this morning. Thank you. We are monitoring hermine all morning. Where the storm is headed and who could get hit hardest over the Holiday Weekend. Hermine smashed into the Florida Panhandle as a category one hurricane has weakened a bit and now a Tropical Storm. Where is the storm now . Where is it headed and what damage could it do . Meteorologist derek van dam is in the Weather Center and the Tropical Storm is dangerous with 70mileanhour winds. For it to be a Tropical Storm, it has to have sustained winds of 39 miles an hour up to 73 miles an hour. When it crosses the 74 miles threshold, it becomes a hurricane. It made landfall east of the st. Marks region along the big bend of florida. One thing to note, the pressure was dropping as it made landfall. That is a telltale signs that the hurricane was strengthening. Thank goodness it made landfall because it cut off the strength. Now it is entering into southern georgia. We no longer have the warm gulf waters feeding it. It should weaken going forward, but we have serious weather to talk about. I want you to take note of the feeder bands coming into central florida. Specifically the tampa bay region. That area has been pounded by heavy rainfall. We will show you how much rain later on in the show. Some reports have been over 20 inches. To give you an idea of the breadth of the storm. How large it is. From one edge of the feeder line on the radar a moment ago all the way to the northern periphery of Tropical Storm hermine, that stretches over 1,100 miles. This storm is huge. Anyone along the atlantic seaboard this Holiday Weekend, needs to Pay Attention to the forecast. We have flood watching in effect from northern florida to the carolinas to west virginia. It doesnt stop there. Here is the latest from the National Weather service. 70mileanhour sustained winds. It is a Tropical Storm. Here are the threats for today. Tornadoes and heavy rain and potential of lightning where you see the shading of yellow. All the way to the delmarva peninsula, it could reform. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum maybe, just maybe the most significant moment of the nfl preseason week took place during the National Anthem during the 49ers and chargers game in san diego. All eyes on 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to see if he would stand, sit or what he would do while the National Anthem played. Coy wire has more in the Bleacher Report. Coy, the crowd was not shy. That is right, christine. Good morning to you, miguel, as well. Colin kaepernick continuing to protest racial injusticinjustic. He said it was never his intention to disrespect the military. That did not matter to many when he ran on the field last night. [ crowd boos ] mostly boos from the san diego crowd on the night when they were honoring military members. Once the anthem played, instead of sitting on the water cooler away from the team the way he had the past three games, kaepernick knelt on one knee surrounded by teammates. One player, eric reid joined him. A former nfl player nate boyar stood next to kaepernick to show his support. Kaepernick invited boyar to the game after reading an open letter he wrote. They had an hour conversation before the game. They bonded. After the game, kaepernick stood by his reason for protest. The media painted this as im antiamerican and antimen and women of the military. That is not the case at all. This is really something about human rights. It is about the people. It is not about anything other than that. Some people arent given the same rights or same opportunities as others. Kaepernicks words are spreading right up the california coast in oakland. Jeremy lynch sitting during the anthem before the seahawks played the raiders. He said he liked what kaepernick was doing and wanted to stand behind him. Miguel, christine, lanes head coach pete carroll said he is proud and looks forward to continuing the conversation with his team. Interesting. It is not going away. A full season of this, coy. I think so. As a former player, i like seeing someone take a stand and standing up for something in which they believe. Coy, nice to see you. Breaking overnight. Hermine touching down. Smashes into florida. Downgraded to a Tropical Storm, but still packing power. Cutting off power to thousands of residents who are taking shelter. Officials warning of damage and flooding reported in the panhandle. Millions could be affected by the storm as it heads up the coast for the Holiday Weekend. Cnn has coverage of the storm. Welcome back to early start. Im Miguel Marquez. Im christine romans. 32 minutes past the hour. Top story. The breaking news this morning. Hermine now a Tropical Storm. Winds of 70 miles an hour. When it made landfall on the Florida Panhandle early this morning, hermine was a category one hurricane. About four hours ago slamming into the coast. Packing sustained winds of 80 miles an hour. Bringing heavy rain and high storm surge and extensive flooding along the florida gulf coast. Now Tropical Storm hermine powering across georgia. Millions of residents along the storms path up to new jersey are under watches and warnings. They are all preparing for water and Power Outages and the worst. Earlier, Florida Governor rick scott stating hermine is dangerous. It is life threatening. We will see big storm surge. We will see a lot of rain. We will see flooding. We will see downed power lines. Everybody needs to be prepared. We are blessed with the best Emergency Management teams in the country at the state and local level. We have a Great National guard. You have to take this seriously. How huge is hermine . This nasa image shows hermine obscuring almost all of florida. Derek van dam said 1,100 miles. We are covering the storm any the way cnn can with Polo Sandoval live in st. Marks, florida. Polo. Reporter we saw things change significantly quickly, christine. The howling winds now replaced with tree frogs and drizzle. Now this is what we are looking at now. We are able to get this close after the Sheriffs Office said any lines tangled in the tree are not live. What is important to point out is this tree is blocking the main roadway into st. Marks. That is a mile and a half down that way. It is keeping us here, but keeping authorities to get in there to assess the situation. There was a gentleman who drove up a few moments ago on that side and could not make his way north. I managed to speak to him. He said there is four to five feet of water in the city. That is the reason priority number one is clearing the power lines in this part of florida, but to begin clearing the roadways, particularly the roadways that lead into the lowlying coastal regions like st. Marks, which is one of the cities closest to where the storm made landfall only a few hours ago. What is important to show you, christine, is just how much damage this storm left behind. We understand there are no reports of injuries. That is good news. However, we do expect the flood damage to be quite significant when we make our way closer to the coast and most importantly, getting around is difficult. There are hundreds of trees according to authorities, blocking the roadways. That is why the schools are closed today in the region. Offices and government offices are closed. We heard a few moments ago from the local sheriff. Recommending people stay home and not necessarily stay out and about. The cleanup process will take a very long time. Especially when we get the cleanup crews and Electrical Companies in to start the cleanup process. Polo, a good point. What can look like a few inches of water can have dangers. Washed out culverts. You were pointing out earlier the cracking in the trees. You can hear the frogs. There has been wind damage there. Reporter oh, significant wind damage. What is important is some of the heavy winds have moved on, but the ground is extremely saturated. The concern here is it would not take much for the trees to actually topple over. What we are seeing right now as we step on the area here, some folks making their way north that are essentially stranded. They can only walk around the region. What im told by the local sheriff is what they will do here in a few moments is try to remove this large tree either by actually cutting it down with a chainsaw or possibly bringing in a tractor or two to remove it. What is really important here is that this is the main way in and the main way out of that st. Marks community which is home to several hundred people. Some of which decided to stay in and ride out the storm. They were here 11 years ago and they were not about to leave their home for hermine. You see activity as the power crews come in. Cue the chainsaws. Thank you, sandoval. The chainsaw brigade is there. A few minutes ago, we spoke with Trey Morrison south of tallahassee. We asked him about the damage his county has sustained in wakulla. It will be a big day of recovery for us. We literally have dozens of trees down. More than we have been able to keep up with. Probably a good 50 to 60 of the county will be without power for the next day or so. Winds last night got so bad that the Power Companies and fire rescue probably all pulled out and public works pulled out between 10 00 and 11 00. By midnight, we had to pull the deputies out for their safety. As we are getting back into the neighborhoods, trying to assess and figure out how were going to safely do this, the biggest part will be up to the Power Company because as these lines are down throughout neighborhoods, they cant just turn the power on because they have your home hooked up. They have to get the area safe before they turn that on. It will be a day or two of intense work for the Power Companies and public works. Were still right now, like i said, we have a lot of power out. Businesses are not going to be up and running. We are asking the public to stay home if you can. If it is not an emergency, this is not the time to be outside seeing the damage. I know people are interested in that stuff. It really hampers us and it is an unsafe environment right now. That is a really good warning for people. Folks may want to get out to see the damage to the neighborhood or to their town. You are saying just sit tight. You need a day or two of work to get this safely done. A lot of work the power crews have to do and public works. The bottom line is stay home, folks. Yes, maam. We need at least a good day before people want to get out and travel. I would say after this first 24 hours after the storm, most roadways will be up and safe. Now we have a few hours here of high tide which was 3 40 for us. With the tidal surge, we are thankful we did not get what we expected. That was nine feet or greater. We got closer to five or six feet. In the next few hours as high tide gets out of here and storm surge gets out of here, the areas, st. Marks and panacea, we hope the water clears out. We can check the places to make sure theyre safe and as the power lines get pulled off the road. We have a lot of areas down with trees and power lines down. So much so we dont have enough deputies to put out. We have a lot with barricades. Another thing if you have to travel, if that is necessary and you come across the barricades, please dont try to go around them. They are there for a reason. We are trying to protect you. Theres something bad there that we are trying to say not to go around or get involved with it. It will be stressful to continue on. I know it has been stressful as the storm came onshore and such. Hurricane hermine touching down in florida, and now weakening to a Tropical Storm. It is still packing a punch. Millions in the storms path for the Holiday Weekend. New day picks up coverage right now. This is cnn breaking news. Good morning. Welcome to new day. Friday, september 2nd. Chris is off this morning. John berman joins me. Great to have you. Good to be here. We start with breaking news. Hurricane hermine makes landfall this morning. South of tallahassee. Believe it or not, this is the first hurricane to hit florida in more than a decade. The storm has weakened to a Tropical Storm in the last hour, but still a serious threat to a huge swath of the east coast. 23 million under watches and warnings in nine states. Tens of thousands of residents without power already. This is just getting started. We have the storm covered from every angle. I want to start with Polo Sandoval in st. Marks, florida. Polo, what do you see . Reporter john, it is important to point out what you can expect after the storm rolls through. This is amazing we witnessed a few moments ago a large tree blocking the roadway. We saw a small army of workers from the nearby city of tallahassee clear it out in a matter of minutes. That is important as these are the First Vehicles that are now making their way out of the city of st. Marks. That is the region that was perhaps hit the hardest here. It was closest to where the eye of the storm made landfall only a few hours ago. What is important to see here are people actually making their way out of the region. What is a relatively small city of a few hundred. Several people decided to simply hunker down while the storm swept through. Now that the main roadway in and out of the region is clear, we are seeing people finally leave the area and most importantly this is going to allow resources and First Responders make their way into the region to get a better picture of how wide spread and how significant the damage is. I spoken to some of the folks who were the first to leave the area. They say they tell me there are some pockets in that small city that could be under three to four feet of water. We are prepared to get a closer look ourselves, but its port to point out that authorities are still recommending people simply stay indoors. State offices are closed. Schools are closed in the region as well. Thats authorities trying to make sure people simply stay at home because the main priority will be to get some of these crews in so they can clear out the debris and get some of those Power Companies back in to get people back online. There are still at least 70,000 folks in the area waking up in the dark this morning. John . It is only when the sun comes up after a storm like this that you get a true sense of the damage that was caused. That will happen over the next several minutes and hours. Thank you very much. Want to the move west
