I just want to say that the window in which you can safely leave florida, certainly south florida is closing rather rapidly. We have a category 5 hurricane. We know already that gas has been limited or nonexistent at a number of service stations. You can expect power outages, expect floods. Theres going to be lots of wind damage. Why not leave . But right now 5 to 10 feet storm surge, meaning that water gets pushed up onshore. This is the rpm. This tells us where the water will be. This is going to be a bit of a different depiction of what happens with irma. But there you can see approaching the Southeast Quadrant of florida. The entire florida peninsula will be engulfed by some form of irma. Whether you see Hurricane Force winds, tropical force winds, the flooding, but it is going to be devastating. And it starts to make a little bit more of a turn towards the west. All right, here is our european model. The european model is updated. Brings it in towards the florida keys. Its just a little bit to the west side of this and then brings it up more towards tampa. But the american model has it just to the east of center. So either way, theres really not much difference. 50, maybe 75 miles difference between the two. But either way youve got a category 5 hurricane now. Could be category 4 by the time it makes landfall. When is landfall . Right now computer models are saying saturday night, possibly sunday morning. It is moving quickly, but it is such a strong system. In recent history, we havent seen anything like that. Its just going to swallow florida. And we should remind people. Its important to point out your window to get out is closing. But if youre one of those moving away from this storm, youre still going to need supplies. We know its going to be days of trouble after this. A gallon a day per person is what everybody really needs. And even if it takes that right turn, youre still in Hurricane Force winds. Here we are early friday morning. We go into early saturday morning. Still not going to make landfall. Maybe saturday night, maybe sunday morning. Thats our window. So theres 48 hours right there. The window is closing so fast for you. If youre deciding at the last minute, were going to leave, that window is shutting down pretty quickly. All right, this is european model, and this one has a lot of data put into it. Lets just split the state right down the center. So the track is going to take it what looks to be according to this computer model, just to the west of center as opposed to the north american model. And there we go. Moves on in to south eastern florida, and theres miami right there. Just on the eastern side of that spine of florida. But either way this hurricane is so large it encompasses essentially the state of texas. If you were to draw it, thats the size it would be. So no one left in florida is going to go unscathed. Now, it depends on just the intensity. What part of the herb cane are you going to be in . Its hard to say because the difference between these two models is not very big. Right now 165 mile per hour winds. Not 185, but were still back over open waters here, going to interact a little bit with land. But, yes, these southern counties of florida especially in these coastal area, mandatory evacuation. They cant come get you if something bad happens because already the roads are clogged, gas is a problem, food is a problem, electricity will be a problem. The flooding will be a problem. Weve got a lot of problems. And those are the kinds of things youll have to deal with if youre left behind. This is the rpm. And the rpm is different. There we go. It pushes that water onshore, 5 to 10 feet. So already were inundated in a lot of these coastal areas. We saw wilma back in 2005 and hurricane andrew back in 1992. Already this is a deadly and enormous nuclear hurricane, as the mayor of miami said just a couple of days ago. Karen, how far in either direction do Hurricane Force winds extend . Say it does split the middle of florida, how wide do those 160 mile an hour winds extend . The last i connected it was about 35 miles from the center. So were looking at the better part of 80 miles. I dont know what the diameter of the center is right now, bu were getting another update from the National Hurricane storm center. These winds can knock down trees, knock down power lines, shingles come off of roofs. Theres just a lot thats going to impact the state. Tropical storm force winds. Shuper market shelves were absolutely empty when i went here today for basic goodies. And also what we started to see are long lines. And that really has been one of the major problem as people try to get out of the eye of the storm. Weve seen long lines of people trying to get petrol so they can get out, but unfortunately they have been stuck in those lines for hours. In order to facilitate that and mitigate that problem, dave, what we have seen is the police pretty much coming in and patrolling fuel tanks to these petrol stations. Even offering to help out the petrol station so workers can leave. So theyre trying to keep the fuel flowing so people can move out quicker. Of course, all this as some 650,000 people have evacuated and as the eye of the storm nears closer. As i talk to you, the winds are picki picking up. Weve been preparing actually since last saturday when we saw the storm coming. Weve been going through our Emergency Management plans, locking down our facilities, ensuring that weave our assets directly after the storm. Making sure all our citizens have the appropriate information and clearing, you know, as far as evacuations and really just preparing ourselves to deal with the matter after is usually when we go into action. What is your warning to your residents, and are people listening . Do you see people hunkering down and trying to wait out this devastating storm . Well, the prewarning is to prepare yourselves. Be ready to sustain yourselves for at least 72 hours. After the storm, again, be prepared to sustain yourself for at least three days while we clear the roads and assess and be able to get people out. As far as evacuations, were telling them an Evacuation Order has been issued, please heed it. Please evacuate. Because once were in the storm, you will not be able to come out safe. We know Hurricane Harvey was devastating because of so much rain. This looks like a wind event here for you. Were talking about sustained winds. 180 Miles Per Hour for so long. Weve never seen a category 5 with winds like that for so long. What are you warning people about in terms of flying debris . I know you said youre getting all the trash and debris out of the streets now. What are you telling people in preparing for the wind . Weve been actually in the prior days and today as well, dont put anything else out. Weve actually brought in extra crews to try and get any of that debris out of the way, pick up the bulk trash, the palm fronds and all that stuff that can be projectiles. I lived through andrew here back in the 90s and lost my home. So im very clear what can happen in one of these wind events. Were just beating it into the the heads of our citizens. You guys need to keep the streets clear, hunker down and be ready to ride out the storm. One of the most difficult parts of the evacuation is what were seeing there. Not just traffic but gas stations are running out of gas, reporting that a third of gas stations in miami were without fuel yesterday. What is being done to remied that, and how do you get gas to the people that want to get out . Weve been really just heeding the warnings of the governor and county mayor. Any of those gas stations that reports there is gas, actually put those particulars on our information that we push out on our social media platforms, Facebook Page and, you know, really just kind of dealing with the public ourselves. I actually had to drive about five miles out of the city just to get gas a couple of days ago myself. Prepare for at least 72 hours if youre hunkering down if youre staying there. That means a gallon of water per person per day youre expecting. Others are suggesting more than three days of supplies.
