But were staying in touch with officials there. Keep in mind, earlier this week, two strong quakes hit the same region near the town of visso. Barbie nadeau is on the phone with us. Lets talk about what youre hearing from officials with this earthquake happening after another series of strong quakes within the same week . One of the bright sides of all of this is the fact that the earthquakes last week were so strong, caused a lot of people to evacuate. Even though its stronger, you are not going to stee a lot of casualties because people werent there or in their houses. A lot of the structures that were damaged last week that may have had fissures in the facade and or on the outside of the buildings or balconies that were damaged that completely collapsed in this stronger earthquake, we see much more damage reports right now than we did last week. Thats because theyre 100, 200 years old or some of them even more recent that dont have antii seismic measures in place, cant handle the series of earthquakes in a row like that. A lot of people had evacuated to a safer place. About 5,000 people outside of their homes from last weeks earthquake. A lot of the people are along the coastline in hotels that are being paid for by the government to keep them in a safer place. At least thats the bright side. People werent in their homes. To the same extent we had last week. There was no loss of life because people evacuated largely from the devastating august earthquake in the area. You know, this is a site theyre accustomed to seismic activity in the area. Its unheard of to have this many strong earthquakes in a row. The people are extremely nervous, dont want to stay in their homes or be near there. Thats a plus when it comes to the earthquakes. Its unnerving to those people, george. Barbie, pointing out the good news in the sense that many people had evacuated, barbie also saying the buildings are olders. Theres a side by side look at the basilica. You get a sense of how strong this earthquake is. If we can take a look at this. We may not be able to pull that image up it is point. We see the basilica on one side and before the earth kwakt and on the other side after, you can see a great deal of damage. We also have news theres the image. You get a sense here. So thats before. Barbie, if you are able to see, this is after. This image from we understand that the basilica of San Benedetto has been damaged but not leveled by this earthquake. We are starting to see some of the damage coming in, the visuals of what happened with this 6. 6 magnitude earthquake. You touched on this but this is a seismic region and april beautiful part of italy with historic buildings. Is there a sense that people will return after this strong series of earthquakes . No. I think theres a sense that people have really had enough. Maybe their homes have been so damaged they dont want to spend the money to rebuild them. A lot of people dont have insurance for natural disasters like this. Theres going to be that aspect of it. People cant afford to go back and rebuild their homes. Another aspect, people are terrified. We spoke to a number of people last week up there that said this is it. No more. We cant take the fear of the constant earthquakes. You know, were talking about these three strong earthquakes that in between them there are a series of cascading aftershocks that hit the area. You may not feel them as strongly, but its still the ground, we felt it last week as well. Seems to be constantly moving and shaking. Theres no sense of calm. Thats obviously very difficult especially for the elderly people who may be in wheelchairs and have trouble walking. Its a difficult situation. Lots of people say theyre leaving for good. These are areas of italy that are sparsely populated. These are major cities. But there are a lot of little enclaves where people built homes together, several generations of families may live in that area. These are those characteristic hilltops town that you see in postcards that are being destroyed in these earthquakes. Theres really nothing left of some of these beautiful villages. Of course, thats going to be difficult for them going forward. These are a popular tourist area. Lots of italians travel to these areas to enjoy the countryside and the fresh air. All of that will be gone with disappearance of some of the beautiful towns. Some of these villages are completely gone after these three earthquakes. George . A magnitude 6. 6 earthquake that happened a couple of hours ago. Were starting to see some of the i am ajts come in here to the cnn newsroom of some of the damage. Journalist and contributor Barbie Nadeau was on the phone with us. Thank you for the update. Lets bring in our meteorologist derek van dam who is tracking the damage, the reports to the newsroom. Derek, you were explaining to our viewers around the world, these are four shots that weve seen. The 5. 5 on wednesday. Then a 6. 1 magnitude earthquake the second quake that same day and now this. This is an extremely active sies a very active fault line across central italy. What were working with here is the potential that this is the earthquake and the previous earthquakes earlier this week could potentially be four shocks. I think the important idea here is we dont want to get lost in the technicalities of this. The fact is that this area continues to be plagued by strong shaking in the ground. And what ive done just to kind of put this all in perspective and give you an idea of how active this fault line actually is, i put together a graphic which you see behind me of the recent earthquakes that have struck central italy today. Being a magnitude 6. 6, this earthquake occurring at roughly 7 40 in the morning local time across central italy and take a look at the other magnitude earthquakes that have occurred at least of magnitude 6. 0 or higher. Remember back in august, the 6. 2 took place. Nearly 300 fatalities took place. So 298 fatalities officially. Now we look back just four days on the 26th of october and a magnitude 6. 1 and 5. 5. What were going to point out here, because the magnitude was less than todays earthquake, we have considering these four shocks, this would be the main earthquake. Lets not get lost in the details there. The point is, this is a shallow earthquake and the poe tex for serious damage is there. Ten kilometers means theres not much bedrock between the surface of the earth and where it took place. No dampening can really occur from the shaking and the ultimate Ripple Effect that protrudes out from the center of the shaking area. Look at this. The plate tectonics, it basically parallels with the entire staal it hi region. Its called a subduction front. These are 24 millimeters per year. Thats the equivalent of what your fingernails or toenails grow. It gives you a perspective how they come together. This is Just Enough Movement to create so much pressure, eventually, they slide and break and we see earthquakes like this unfold. What youre looking at now is the u. S. Geological surveys. Kind of a shake map is what this is called. Youre going to zoom into the epicenter and give you an indication of who melt the worst shaking. Theres the epicenter with the dark red. The yellow dots there are actually earthquakes or four shocks that occurred within the past week. The red would be within the past hour. The orange would be within the past day. Weve had several dozen, if not hundreds of these four aftershocks depending what is realized here and the point being is that the region where were seeing some of the first visuals, is only about six kilometers outside of where the epicenter took place. The amount of population that felt this earthquake, you see strong to very strong shaking. At least for rough live 200,000 people. We had weak shaking felt as far south as rome. Thats inclusive of 13 Million People. You can see how active the counties are across this area with the historic earthquakes being plotted out shades of red. A very active fault line to say the least. We do anticipate the potential for damage and fatalities going forward. But the good news, as barbie has mejd mentioned, so many people had left their homes already because of the shockwaves that came through the region earlier in the week and only roughly two months ago. The u. S. Geological survey can compare similar magnitude and death and this is what they would estimate in terms. Of economic losses. They have the highest percentage of economic liability, 10 to 100 billion u. S. Dollars. Thats less than 1 of the gdp of italy. It puts it into further perspective of what they would anticipate with this size of an earthquake. Busy day for central italy. It will be several hours before we get a full extent of the magnitude of this particular earthquake and how far the damage has actually gone. Derek, getting a sense of the damage there as you showed us. The good news, i guess, as barbie has explained to our viewers, many people in that region have already left. But obviously well have to hear from officials if there are reports of major damage, of injuries, or fatalities for this earthquake. Derek van dam, thank you. Lets recatch the breaking news were following on cnn. A magnitude 6. 6 earthquake that struck central italy close to perugia there, about 42 miles to the east of the area. There have been no reports of casualties or injuries at this point but were staying in touch with our officials, our sources and reporters on the ground there. On wednesday, two powerful earthquakes hit that same region weakening a number of structures. Stay with cnn as we continue to follow this breaking news story. This 6. 6 magnitude earthquake that hit near perugia. Heres the thing. There were other earthquakes earlier in the week, the first the second on wednesday, a 6. 2 magnitude quake and now this 6. 6 magnitude earth yak that hit central italy. Well bring you developments as we learn more from officials on the ground. The fight to retake mosul. Isis reportedly executed 75 iraqi officers in that city. A witness says the men were among 600 people detained at their gun battles earlier in the week. Isis released many of the civilians. In the meantime, iraqi forces are moving closer and closer to mosul. They cleared out the fires to a town in the south of the city. 35 isis militants were killed in that battle. Theyre concerned a that they will use civilians as cheelds against iraqi forces. Were live inn erbil iraq. What can you lefrn about the executions by isis . Reporter they reportedly took place as you were mentioning there, after isis detained them after fierce gun battles did break out. I went around trying to round up as many individuals as i possibly could. This is not the first time were hearing reports of isis carrying out mass executions and this push towards mosul began. The United Nations is saying that isis took people from villages on the outskirts of the city trying to move them into the city presumably to use additional human shields on top of the upwards of 2. 1 Million People already inside. Some of them were trying to resist. Theres also a report of about 20 men being strung together and electrocuted. The bodies being left out for the public to view. Along the various different fronts, there are Different Levels of progress. To the east, were seeing more sweeping operations happening in the sense that the frontlines, more or less, holding at this stage. The kurdish and iraqi forces try to go back and move through areas that they have already cleared. To the west of the city, you have the predominantly shia Paramilitary Force making relatively speaking quick progress as they move up from the west to try to eventually block off a key isis moving towards tell far, which could potentially cause a lot of problems given that turkey has issued stark warnings, not wanting to see this Paramilitary Force partaking in this battle. Speaking of the villages that have already been cleared, george, a number of them, dozens of them, in fact, christian villages. We visited one of them where the destruction was evident and painful for those who once called it home. The fathers voice echoes through the blackened shelf his church. He has loved this place since he was a child. Translator i was 7 or 8 years old. I used to sit in the first row. The decons and priests would be praying. Id sit looking around the church. I never thought the day would come that the church would look like this. Knew isis were cruel but never imagined this. How can they come into a house of worship and do this with peaceful and loving people . We dont want enemies. But they had no choice. Throughout this wunts sleepy town, isis defaced and destroyed all symbols of christianity. And the battle to liberate bar toe la left entire streets in ruin. Gravestones pockmarked with bullet holes. Only traces of the life before. We met the father two years ago before the horror began. This was a tranquil sanctuary. Translator when you were here, i told you isis would come and we asked them what they wanted. We didnt know isis was this ugly, this destructive, this evil. They want to send the world to the dark ages. But the father is ready to forgive. Translator i would even pray for them so that god can enlighten them and leave this road. How can someone blow themselves up or kill because theyre of a different faith . He was liberated on the fathers 49th birthday. Half his congregation has left iraq. He prays the rest will stay. Translator were trying. We are trying as best as we can to bring back hope. Reporter george, that sentiment that you heard the father expressing, to restore hope, thats not just applicable to the Christian Community but so many who have been suffering under isis brutal rule. Theres no doubt in anyones mind that mosul will be liberated from isis. The question afterwards is how does this country rebuild itself and what happens next. We continue to follow the breaking news this hour. A strong earthquake to hit central italy. Its the third in the past few days. This quake the largest. Measuring 6. 6 magnitude. You see the video showing significant damage. So far, though, no reports of casualties. Two very powerful earthquakes hit the same region on wednesday. Weakening a number of structures. Our journalist and cnn contributor Barbie Nadeau is live from rome with the latest. Barbie, are you hearing anything new about the extent of damage and any reports of injuries or possible fatalities from this earthquake . Reporter we still dont have any reports of fatalities at this point. But we are getting reports about injuries and about some of these outlying areas through the little towns that have been in little enclaves where people live being cut off because of damaged to the roads because reports that theyve had to use a helicopter to lift some people to safety. Thats not necessarily because they were so badly injured, but because they couldnt get an ambulance to check out the situation. The Civil Protection authorities, police, and all the people you would expect in an emergency like thrks are in action. Theyve been there since wednesday. There are a lot of people on the ground already. One thing thats the silver lining, so many people evacuated during the earthquakes that you mentioned last week. We wont see a lot of widespread loss of life because people werent in their houses. So many were damaged by the earthquake last week and its fallen to the ground as you see this. Incredible images against a strong earthquake this morning. Its been a real blow Cultural Heritage to that area. Theres beautiful churches standing up last wednesday in complete rubble this morning. Thats also a blow to the area. It extends to the loss of community. Places will never be the same again. Theyre completely wiped off the map in some cases when youve got little villages that are in rubble. Its unlikely that a lot of these places will ever be rebuilt because of the difficulty of who is going to pay for that and their infrastructure. Those are all concerns, obviously, people ask every time one of these seismic events happens. Why do these building fall . Are they stronger considering this is an earthquake zone or a heavy seismic activity all the time. You know, the questions continue to be asked. Whether lessons are learned is a different thing. Reinforcements and things like that, that will be the next step. Thats what people are asking today as well. Barbie, stay on the line with us but i want to show them this side by side of the basilica. If we have that image to show our viewers. You get a sense of the olding buildings, look at the before here on one side of the screen and then look at the after. This this is after todays quake. Barbie, you point out rightly, these are very older buildings and the question is how do you rebuild and restore such a historic part of that country, such a beautiful part of that country. But the question many ask, barbie, sichb whats happening this week alone, not talking about seismic action in the region. But this magnitude, 5. 8 on wednesday, followed by a 6. 1 and now this 6. 6. Is there a sense that people will even go back into that region and want to rebuild . Well, we spoke with a lot of people in the area last week when we were there. They said this is it. Enough is enough. They cant even envision staying in a place like that. Were talking about these big earthquakes, 5. 5, to 6. 1 to 6. 6. In between the earthquakes cascading shock after aftershock. It keeps moving and moves. Especially the elderly people who may be in wheelchairs. So many people being carried out of areas with their wheelchairs. We saw on the shelters last week, they were primarily elderly people who have maybe spent their whole lives there and dont want to leave but he dont see how they can actually stay. Bewildering to people who dont have the economic ability to go somewhere else. A lot of people dont have insurance for natural resistors. Did you know theres a law to consider here when you feel like rebuilding. You have to think twice about that when you see the earthquakes in a matter of three, four days. Its just terrifying because people who live in that area. George . Journalist and ccc contributor on the phone. Barley, youll smeem with were going to get more information about the extent of the damage. The possible cash umts, the extent of injuries from in major earthquake. Lets bring in our meteorologist derek van dam also following the situation there. Derek, we were just talking about this wednesdays earthquake. Lets think back to august. The big earthquake in august where nearly 300 people were killed. This earthquake near a. M. Trees. Now earthquakes in staal italy. Extremely activity fault line to say the least. Whether theyre for chocks or aftershocks. We dont want to get lost in the detail. You heard barbie mention that how do you rebuild after Something Like this . These historical landmarks. For instance, the basilica of st. Benedict in the north shore region, this is the birthplace of st. Benedict. That church or basilica was built upon now that were seeing at least partial dee struck of that building. There goes a piece of history. I want to try to put this in perspective. According to the u. S. Geological survey, woke see the number of people or population densities that experience weak shaking and at least 13 Million People, im already seeing on social media videos of people posting of the inside of their homes in rome. Actually, having lambs shaking. Dishes following off of their counters for instance. But whats also interested out here, there was a significant population that felt strong or very strong shaking from this magnitude 6. 6. Lets put the latest earthquakes across this active fault line into perspective for you. So today is the 6. 6. We know that just outside of the north shore region was the epicenter. About six kilometers away. As george mentioned, look at this. Back in august of this year, the 24th. That was a magnitude 6. 2. Slightly weaker than todays earthquake. Thats why we would consider this a foreshock. But 298 fatalities. Then we look back just four daysing, in a similar cross proximity. We had no fatalities hours apart from each other. A very likelihood. The death was so shallow, ten coil om terse deep really is a shol owe earthquake. If we had a deeper art quake, we would simply have more rock bed, more earth for the shockwave of an earthquake. When its only ten kilometers deep, theres not much to help absorb or dampen the devastating effects of a strong earthquake like this. Heres the village or town. This is the epicenter. That is about six kilometers or roughly three miles. You can see how mountainous this terrain is. Two fault lines coming together and creating a lot of pentup energy. Thats why historically speaking, weve had hundreds if not thousands of earthquakes within this particular region a the least since the beginning of the century. You can see the two plax coming together. Running parallel with the entire country of italy and they are coming together at 24 millimeters per year. Thats roughly the same speed that your fingernails grow to put that into perspective. Heres from the us g. S. They compare similar earthquakes with similar magnitude and death. They would forecast the highest probability of economic losses to fall somewhere between 10 million u. S. Dollars and 100 million u. S. Dollars. Which by the way, george is less than 1 of the gdp of italy. But still a significant factor considering the amount of earthquakes that have struck the region. Derek van dam for us. Derek, well stay in touch with you. We understand a shallow earthquake but at the same time very powerful and were starting to get reports now of the damage and to learn more about people who may have been injured or possibly even killed. Geological survey. It was ten kilometers or six miles. It was described as a shallow earthquake by derek van dam. It was hit by two other earthquakes earlier in the week. Also getting a statement from the they are looking for anyone who may need their last rites after this earthquake. This is according to a Statement Released by them. They say no reports of deaths or injuries at this time. I want to show you this image of the basilica. You get a sense of the before and after. The after this 6. 6 magnitude earthquake. You get a sense of the damage that has been done and also according to the monks there, there are reports of people trapped in the square. This area links the town to the main roads. This according to a tweet on a twitter account. We continue to follow developments and get information from sources on the ground of what happened in central italy. A very strong earthquake that has struck the region. Stay with cnn as we continue to follow that breaking news. Americas choice. 2016. The fbis discovery of emails by one of Hillary Clintons top aides was made public over the objections of the u. S. Attorney general. This according to officials. The fbi director, james comey ignored the objections when he unilaterally informed congress on friday. In the meantime, Hillary Clinton on saturday seemed to shake off the bombshell announcement as she campaigned in miami with pop star jennifer lopez. She has been loudly complaining of comeys timing so close to election. Thousands of emails belonging to huma abedin were recently discovered during an unrelated investigation of abedins estranged husband. Republican donald trump spoke so his supporters and heres what he had to say on saturday to them. Listen. The only reason, only reason, that they did this action that you saw yesterday was very, very serious things must be happening and must have been found. Very, very serious things. Very, very serious things. And you could also ask, when they complain on the other side, why wasnt this evidence given previously . Why wasnt it given previously . And when you talk about instincts, i dont know if anybody saw my comments on Anthony Weiner call instincts, folks. I had no idea i was going to be that accurate. Boy, that was right on the nose. As a matter of fact, though, it is important to point out that not even the fbi understands what the contents are of those these emails. All we noah cording to a source is that they were neither sent or received by Hillary Clinton. This is what donald trump was referring to in a tweet in 2015. It came out that huma abedin knows all about hillarys private emails. Anthony weiner will tell the world. The investigation into the private email server was closed last july. So its sudden resurrection so close to the election has knocked them on their heels on the offensive now targeting comey for his timing. Listen. It is pretty strange, its pretty strange to put Something Like that out with such Little Information right before an election. In fact, in fact, its not just strange, its unprecedented and it is deeply troubling. Voters deserve to get full and complete facts. And so weve called on director comey to explain everything right away, put it all out on the table. Right . Now, of course, donald trump is already making up lies about this. He is doing his best to confuse, mislead and discourage the american people. Even before the email controversy came back to life, new polls showed trump closing the gap with Hillary Clinton. A Washington Post abc poll released on saturday has clinton with just a twopoint advantage. That is within the margin of error. A week ago, clinton had a double digit edge in the very same poll. Cnns poll of polls which averages the five most recent polls gives Hillary Clinton a fivepoint advantage over donald trump. Thats a snapshot of where things stand right now. This is cnn newsroom. Well be right back after the break. To bring an entire stadium to its feet. You missed it buddy. rich why does he do it . For glory . Notoriety . We dont know. Waaaaave frankly, we dont need to know.
