the future of the long—running australian soap neighbours is in doubt after it's dropped by its uk tv channel. sportsday will be coming up shortly, but first, the bbc�*s laura scott talks to freestyle skier gus kenworthy. i think that my legacy as an athlete is honestly probably more about the social impact than it is about the skiing accolades or awards. gus kenworthy is difficult to define. he is an olympic silver medallist from sochi. going in backwards for the triple 14. he is good. my goodness! that was absolutely insane. and gus kenworthy knows it. the freestyle skier is also a proud member of the lgbtq+ society and is an athlete, advocate and an aspiring actor. i'm very proud of my ski career and i've had an admirable career and i think i've done a lot, and certainly there are skiers with bigger resumes in terms of podiums and stuff, but i think one thing i'm proud of is that i have become kind of a voice for the community and last time i did get a medal but i did get to be one of the first to openly gay men to compete for team usa winter olympics which is an incredibly opportunity and because of that i got to speak on it a lot and raise a lot of awareness and there was a case that was seen on tv that was kind of unexpected, but i feel that was a visual representation of me and my olympics experience in the community and i think it was a pretty special moment to have that broadcast to the world and on the world stage and to help normalise same sex relationships and have people see a same—sex kiss and it not be some crazy thing, just have it be part of everyday life. for the moment, his focus is on his last ever competition, his third olympics where he will line up in the half pipe. not the slopes where he won his silver, but he says competing in does not sit well with him and getting there at all has not been straightforward. my coach and i have beenjoking because we had quite a lot of setbacks in the lead up to this olympics and two summers ago i knocked myself out in training and a few days later when we got back on snow i tweaked my knee and ended up having to have surgery and it'sjust been kind of one thing after another. it's been frustrating, but i feel like i am making the most of it and in some weird ways i am hoping it is just getting out all of the bad luck that i needed to get out of the way and it will be smooth sailing now, fingers crossed. one big difference this time as you will be competing under the great britain flag rather than the us. how excited are you by that? i'm really excited and it's really an honour and i'm excited to do it for my mum and i'm so grateful to get to go again and i feel like this was a decision that was sort of a difficult one and there were pros and cons to, but ultimately i'm really happy with that decision and i couldn't be more excited to represent team gb and, yeah, luckily it wasn't a big colour shift. the red, white and blue goes well. your mum has been cheering you on when you've been representing the us but it must be extra special for her. she is really excited and she has eight sisters and a brother, which is a nightmare. but she has a huge family and then they have kids, so way more of us are brits and americans, so i'm excited and excited to do with my family and the only real bummer is is no spectators because i was not expecting this whole switch and i was so excited to think about the unionjacks being waved by my mum at the bottom of the course and that won't be the case but i know it will be just as sweet anyway. i wondered if i could get your views from an athletes perspective on covid, how strange it has been to navigate that and the pandemic and prepare for the pinnacle of your sport. it has very much thrown a wrench in everybody�*s plans, and i think one of the biggest things about being an olympian and what that means, well, i guess it is about going to the olympics, but it's more about how resilient olympic athletes are and their adaptability. it has changed everything. it changed the way we train in the way we interact with the other athletes and coaches and last year we had three competitions that were back—to—back in the same location and that is very strange. in the instagram post where you mentioned about covid, you mentioned long covid and the twisties, and that is a term that people heard about with simone biles in tokyo. can you talk about what it was like for you experiencing that? in midair on skis, it's the last place you want to be unsure where you are in the air. for sure. especially in the half pipe, the margin of error is really, really small and that neck of the half pipe is like that on the wall is vertical and if you are going 20 feet out and you come out onto the deck, you are going 20 feet to flat, and if you go in the middle, and the pipe is 22 feet tall, so you are going 42 feet to cluttered it can be really severe. it was kind of like a perfect storm but i got this really bad concussion and had a few concussions and then got covid on the tail end of recovering from the concussion and after my isolation, getting back into the gym, trying to get back to training, i just wasn't able to do anything and was experiencing all sorts of weird neurological issues. i was nauseous, light—headed, dizzy and i was really not sure if it was because of covid or the concussion or because they so quickly coincided. it was hard to tell and even the doctors and everyone could not tell. i came out to colorado for the first two world cups of the season and had a run where i got the twisties, or what we call getting lost in the air and it's a very scary feeling. it's like vertigo and you don't know which way is up or down, but when the level of riding is where it is, that creates that huge margin of error and you are going big and spinning twice and twisting four times, you don't want to not know where you are. and my coach and i agreed that it wasn't safe and put me out of the competition and i basically took an entire month. it's been pretty strange. i don't know anybody that would take a month two month hiatus, two months before the olympics. i guess the last few years have probably shown you and definitely shown the world, that athletes can offer so much more than just results. you have a huge platform to raise important issues. i wonder, obviously, going out to china and the lgbto+ rights over there, ijust wonder what your position is an stance on them having these games and how comfortable you are about competing there. i guess i am comfortable completing their only because i want to make the most of the opportunity and that is where the games are, so i need to kind ofjust deal with that and be the best i possibly can given the circumstances, but in my opinion i don't think any country should be allowed to host the games if they have appalling human rights stances. i think that the ioc should take a stance against a lot of these atrocities and stand up for important issues and not granting the countries in the right to host the games could create positive change in those places, and maybe not even letting them compete. i know the olympics are so important for china and they are so high up in the medal tally that i feel by taking a stance against them in a real, tangible way, you could probably make some positive change, but it's all about money, it seems like. do you have any intention of protesting out in beijing? protesting by speaking up for what i believe in and using my voice and platform to stand up for those ideals, but not protesting in terms of not competing. i don't think that is the way to create change. the diplomatic boycott sends a message but i also don't think it really does anything. are you worried about any kind of backlash you might get from china? yes. yes, i mean the chinese communist party is frightening and i have got less e—mails about how to prepare for the games in terms of packing lists or anything as i have cyber security threats and bringing your phone and using social media over there. it's a little scary. clearly, as we've seen recently, it's not above the communist party to stifle and do these scary things, so of course there is a little bit of a fear. i don't want to be the person that is taking them on but i always been someone who is a firm believer in speaking up for what you do believe in and choosing your voice, and i think when you have a platform you are expected to usual voice and an even bigger way because you have a way to amplify your message, so i don't even want to try to speak out against china or take on china or anything, ifeel like i am more directing my message at the ioc. i don't think the ioc should grant these countries the right to host if they have human rights issues or if there is genocide in the country or stances against lgbtq+, you should get to host the games. beijing will be your last competition. i know you have many strings to your bow. do you know yet what life holds for you after beijing? i don't. i wish i did. it's the end of a chapter which is kind of scary but i think the excitement is it is also the beginning of a new chapter and whatever it is i do, hopefully, will not be something where i am scared of getting hurt, which this has been. i've been writing some random essays that i would like to spend some time continuing writing that and i want to take acting classes and continue to try and hone that craft because it's something i'm excited about and keep auditioning and i guess, who knows? i guess it is difficult to ask this when you are kind of fighting a bit of a battle to make sure you are 100% for beijing, but provided you do get their ioo%, what are your hopes out there? to win the olympics?
