time and certainly the thrust of the administration's policy in the region is maybe not direct confrontation with iran but certainly a more hawkish position on iran and so anything that saudi arabia does that is perceived to be or sold as or genuinely done to counter ron is going to be met i think with positive positive views both in the white house and the defense department which is not necessarily always the case when it comes to policy in the region do we see the way that for example president trump has been tweeting about the issue. both the white house on the pentagon on message and speaking or singing from the same hymn book right so i think that that is one case where it is a bit different to so when trump tweets more overt support for some of the actions taken in saudi arabia the recent actions by mohammed bin solomon the crown prince i think that is where you see a bit of a divergence between the white house and the pentagon particularly when it comes to the g.c.c. crisis where the defense department and the state department have a different view and i think want to push back or are pushing back behind the scenes in a way that when it comes to confrontation with iran they're not necessarily and i think part of that is the defense and state department's position that. the crisis with qatar is pushing qatar closer to iran and so the bureaucracy the foreign policy bureaucracy sees that as a negative in terms of the way that riyadh is trying to counter iran through lebanon i see is not the primary goal at the moment because it's saudi arabia certainly. so many fronts open at the moment as you say has the g.c.c. crisis of the moment centered around qatar but also yemen it is a huge headache for saudi arabia at the moment yes i mean it's very interesting to me that there seems to be this desire in riyadh to take on so many major new challenges now i certainly understand i think it's not a totally unreasonable position for saudi arabia to try to prevent iran from having a sort of almost quasi had monic position all the way to the mediterranean so i think that there is a degree of sense there but on the other hand there's only so much that that one can accomplish and you know it's hezbollah has been a fairly imposing power in lebanon for some time they weren't defeated they haven't been defeated by israel they haven't been defeated by their internal enemies and i'm not quite sure what sort of resources the saudis are going to be able to put behind this when they're committed in so many other places and some of their top people on
