Timaru's aviary at Caroline Bay has been closed for a $70,000 upgrade.
The work, expected to take about two months, will replace the 40 year old netting on the geodesic dome section which was built in the early 80s in Christchurch and rebuilt in its current site in 2009.
A Timaru District Council press release said the restoration job will also refresh the vegetation in the free flight area along with a cleaning of all the facilities.
"There has been an aviary in some form at Caroline Bay since the first one was gifted by the Caroline Bay Association (CBA) in 1930,'' a council spokesperson said.
