Old Big Lots shopping center in Staunton's west end could become storage units if rezoned

STAUNTON — Could new life be brought into the Chestnut Hill Shopping Center? Not if adding storage units to an abandoned shopping center is new life. That's what is proposed if the center is rezoned from general business to light industrial, according to city documents. 
Staunton City Council will be holding a public hearing on potentially changing the zoning for the west end shopping center this Thursday. 
The shopping center has been a big point of discussions for several years. It's been essentially empty since 2019, leaving the west end of the city with a gaping hole in retail and development opportunities.
