The property, located at 600 E. Franklin St. in Monterey, will be used as a shelter for women and families experiencing homelessness. “The property is ideal. It’s in the shelter overlay zone, it’s got plenty of water and it’s close to other amenities,” said Robert Rapp, CHS’s Development Director. The building will undergo an estimated $1-$1.5 million renovation in order to house 30-35 beds. The improvements are expected to take two years and the shelter is slated to open in 2023. “What an incredible gift the Shumans have given to our community,” said Robin McCrae, CEO of Community Human Services. “Now it’s up to us, the community, to do our part.”
