Will deal with if and when it arrives at that point. Right now, we are supporting Ukraines Ability to defend itself against russias unprovoked aggression. Donald trump, if he were president , putin would be sitting in kyiv right now. He talks about, oh, he can end it on Day One. You know what that is . Its about surrender. Well, it is about surrender. You look from the very beginning, mika, of the invasion of ukraine. You had Donald Trump talking about how brilliant Vladimir Putin was as he is slaughtering people as the troops came into ukraine. Yeah, that was just part of Vice President Kamala Harris Interview with 60 Minutes. Well have much more from the wideranging sitdown and the Programs Explanation of why Donald Trump did not participate. Meanwhile, the former president made another disparaging remark about migrants, suggesting that some of them have bad genes. What does that sound like . Well share those comments. Im sure whoever the host was pushed back on that. Its straight out of the nazi playbook. Im sure. I know all republicans will also speak out against that today. For sure, mmhmm. Plus, as the southeast continues to recover from Hurricane Helene, another potentially catastrophic storm is headed for florida. Were going to bring you the latest on Hurricane Milton, which is expected to make landfall late tomorrow. Tampa and the surrounding areas are bracing for what could be an historic storm. Were tracking that throughout the morning. Tampa could really get hammered. Willie, Welcome Back. Thank you, joe. We had a lot of news yesterday. Oh, hi, willie. He wanted you to talk about vandy. Very pleased you were there. Yeah. First, before we get there, i just i mean, what do we say, willie . The Nobel Committee has done it to us again. Why do we keep submitting, joe . Why . In this case, its even worse. You and i, we jot down an idea on the back of a napkin. I think it was chickfila. We were driving through. Literally . Driving through bessemer, Alabama. 18 years old. Jimmy buffett and former Third Baseman for the birmingham barons. Willie says, i have this idea on dna. He scratches it out. I thought the waiter was looking at us kind of funny, right . We left. He picks it up and submits it to the Nobel Committee. Now, they win the nobel prize. We had the triple youve heard of the double helix. We had the triple helix dna, all scratched out. Little chickfila sauce. Crumbs from the waffle fries. It was all there. We have to be more careful. Also, i feel like, joe, when you challenge the establishment the way we do, when youre a renegade, it scares people. I think it does. We need to stop putting ourselves up for the nobel. High time we stop this joke. You heard the high law song, cochran and the clash. Mika, you know this happens every year. This would be like giving a nobel Peace Prize to a president who hadnt really even become president yet. You just stop. Dont do it, willie. Now, lets talk about vandy. Congratulations. You beat us. A lot of time you know, Alabama doesnt lose a lot, but when they do, youre angry. Oh, that player did this. Why did the coaches do that . In this case, Alabama-cant'>Alabama Cant do that. Vandy, your Offensive Scheme and your quarterback, who is going to be playing on sunday, as you can tell, looked like mahomes at times. I mean, you guys beat us from the first play. You dominate. You actually dominated us the whole game. You know, i was there, joe. I was so lucky to be there. Thats the greatest win in the history of vanderbilt sports. So cool. By a long shot. To beat Number One and to beat Alabama. As i said to you, the reason its so special is because of the ultimate respect you have for Alabama. My kids were with me. I said, look, if nothing else, youll get to see ryan williams play, jaden milroe. But there was something in the air. Our team has played really well this year. Youre right that was me The End of the game. Yes me hugging our athletic director, who was in school when i was. She played basketball there. Done a great job, along with the head coach. Oh, my goodness. I was truly in shock. My daughter took that video. Still in shock on The Field. Looking up at the scoreboard. But youre right, joe, it didnt feel flukey. It wasnt a hail mary. Not at all. It was a sustained effort. I think, you know, Diego Pavia, the quarterback, incredible. A transfer this year. Clark lea is great, coming from notre dame. The Student Section was full and full of energy. It was an amazing, amazing day. You know, joe, if youre from the south, you know what vanderbilt is in the s. E. C. Great school, great city, good at a lot of sports, but not the one that matters in the south, which is football. Right. To do this, we feel we steal a couple wins in the s. E. C. Every year. It was different with this coach, this team. That was as big as it gets. When the kids took the goalposts and paraded, not across the street, but 3 miles down nashville on the Lower Broadway with a, Thank You, metro nashville police, with a police escort, and dumped them into the cumberland river, it was just nate, hosting snl, threw it down. I didnt know nate was by the way, George Washington Skit remains one of the funniest things. Hes one of the Funniest Standup comics. Didnt know he was a vandy guy. Awesome. Hes from nashville. One final thing, too, willie, is that, you know, your Coaching Staff and this isnt a knock on our new coach or our new Coaching Staff but the reason why this isnt a fluke, doesnt feel like a fluke, is your Coaching Staff outcoached us the entire game. You were always two steps ahead. I say that to say, this shouldnt just be one win. Shouldnt be because you got a good quarterback from new mexico state. Vandy looks to be built for speed for a long time. Clark lea, this coach, is really good. He is entering the phrase when he has his own players in, the system in. Now, weve gotten greedy at vanderbilt. Something weve never done. We think we should be 50 and ranked fourth or fifth in the country. Lost in double overtime at missouri, a game we should have won, and a flukey loss a week before that. It is an exciting time. As you know, it is a hard league. Wait, how good can we be . Look down, and here comes texas. Here comes lsu. It gets no easier. Right. But it was such an exciting day. Thank you for being so gracious about it, joe. It was a thrill. Of course. We were so thrilled. I mean, i wasnt thrilled. I was thrilled for you. This was joe through the whole game. Jack and i through the entire game, jack would go, what is going on . Thats all they said. I would say, what the is going on . Keep that out. For the, you know, entire three hours. The end of the game, we just said, they outcoached us. They outplayed us. They deserved to win. You know, its so funny, after the georgia win, i said, it felt like a loss because we looked horrible the second half. Alabama has a lot they need to figure out. Vandy, ill tell ya, im very excited. Im really i like it when good schools, really good, great academic institutions, like Alabama, do well. Vanderbilt doing well sends a great message to everybody across the south, across the nation. Even though, yes, that was a hard, hard loss to take. You know, itll vandys time. It was a Once In A Lifetime moment. Sitting behind a woman who has been coming to vanderbilt games for 77 years. She was in the second half having quiet prayer, reaching back and holding hands. Just emotion from someone like her. For me who has been following the team 32 years, hoping for a day like that, for it finally to come. Hopefully good thing ahead for the commodores. Got to share it with your kids. Along with mika, willie, and me, we have the host of way too early, white House Bureau Chief at politico, Jonathan Lemire. No stories to tell about his College Football team. Also, Associate Editor of the washington post, eugene robinson. If we started talking about how great Jayden Daniels was, gene, we would not stop. No. Until 6 45. We better get to the news. I want you to know, well get there. This guy, you saw it the first moment he walked onto The Field. Jayden daniels walked on The Field the first day. Again, my son and i are watching. We go, that Guy Looks like hes been there before. Yeah, yeah. Thats the thing. He looks like hes been there before. Every game, he passes another test. This week, it was against a really good defense. No problem, okay. Ill just have to play this way, play that way. He is amazing. Confidence. Absolutely amazing. Look at this guy. I mean, hes look, its five games in. The Washington Commanders are 41. They havent been 41 since, i think, maybe 2008 or something like that. I mean, this is just amazing. The city is electric about the commanders. Yeah. I have to congratulate willie, though. I tuned in when i saw Diego Pavia was trending. I thought it was a new striker for barcelona, something like that. So i searched around and found the s. E. C. Network. I was like, whoa this is amazing. Willie, im so glad you were there. Congratulations. Thank you, gene. One last thing on pavia, joe. We got to see him for a minute before the game. He was pretty locked in. Said, how you feeling . He said, quote, were getting ready to surprise everybody but ourselves. He thought they were going to win that game. Oh, my god. Thats great. I love that. By the way, alex tells me that gene is right. Washington, First Time theyve been 41 since 2008. Okay. Were going to turn to news and politics. By the way, were tracking Hurricane Milton. You can see that in the corner of our screen. Well dive into that, as well, as were 24 hours away from that Making Landfall. But to politics now. There are 28 days until Election Day. Last night, cbs aired its 60 Minutes Interview with Kamala Harris. Now, the program has interviewed the candidates in every president ial election dating back to 1968. But Donald Trump backed out this year. Before airing the interview with Vice President harris, 60 Minutes began with a note about trump. Heres part of that explanation. Its been a tradition for more than half a century that the major party candidates for president Sit Down with 60 Minutes in october. In 1968, it was Richard Nixon and hubert humphrey. This year, Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump accepted our invitation. But, unfortunately, last week, trump canceled. The campaign offered shifting explanations. First, it complained we would factcheck the interview. We factcheck every story. Later, trump said he needed an apology for his interview in 2020. Trump claims correspondent Lesley Stahl said in that interview that hunter bidens controversial laptop came from russia. She never said that. Trump has said his opponent doesnt do interviews because she cant handle them. He had previously declined another debate with harris. So tonight may have been the largest audience for the candidates between now and Election Day. Wow. You know, ive got to ask Jonathan Lemire. Well, before i ask, i think its fascinating. Being factchecked, i love when People Factcheck me. I really do. If i make a mistake, i want to know what i said that was wrong. People can disagree with me. Opinions are one thing, but i want to be factchecked. If i say something wrong, i want to know that. Like most adults that i know, theyre the same way. The fact that Donald Trump and his Vice President ial nominee are so horrified at the prospect of being factchecked suggests well, its the tell. Theyre still lying this week about the 2020 election. Theyre lying in a way thats very destructive for the people of North Carolina and South Carolina about hurricane relief. In a way thats getting in the way, in a way that Republican Governors who are pushing back against them, theyre lying about dogs and It K Cats being in ohio when the republican governor there is saying thats a lie, as well. The lies continue over and over again. But he doesnt go on because of the factcheck. Why are they scared of factcheck . Because they lie all the time. You literally can see every day them lying on the campaign trail. Then he says he doesnt go on for an apology. He wants an apology from Lesley Stahl for something that never even happened. Again, deranged, disconnected, diluted, whatever you want to call it. Or maybe just scared. Finally, he says Kamala Harris this is bizarre cant Sit Down on interviews because she doesnt know the issues. As heilemann always says, it is either projection or confession. Here, Donald Trump is the one who skipped the 60 Minutes Minutes Interview, First Time a candidate did that, and even refused a debate on Fox News. Even on Fox News, who many hosts on that network are echoing Donald Trumps disinformation. Cant do a real interview, and he cant do a debate. One of the most popular hosts suggests that Civil War is better than voting, and that they need to move past voting. Yet, shes willing to debate him there, and he refuses to do it. So Last Night, as i was watching this, i started asking, jonathan, like, whats going on, man . Ive heard from people inside his campaign. I know you have, too. Though theyre very careful, a real frustration. They have no idea what this guy is going to do. He doesnt do the things he should do to win, and they cant control him at all. What are you hearing . Is there an understanding on his part that he is no longer up to sitting for serious interviews where people challenge him . Is his age, as Peter Baker wrote in the New York times yesterday, really preventing him from doing serious interviews . The debate, not doing the debate. Really, im dumbfounded. This is just not the behavior of somebody who wants to win an election. No. Two things here. First of all, Vice President harris did receive criticism, as we well know, in recent weeks for not doing many interviews. Look, some democrats are anxious, saying she needs to do more. That is changing. She sat for 60 Minutes. Today, shes with the view, howard stern, stephen colbert. Shes ramping up her own Media Appearances. Shes been consistent, saying, hey, i want a second debate with Donald Trump. Trump is the one who said no to the debate, and trump said no to 60 Minutes. There are a couple of things at play here. First of all, we heard Jd Vance in the Vice President ial debate being upset, saying to moderators, wait, i thought you werent going to factcheck me, when they did even modestly, because he was lying about something. Of course, now trump did not want to submit himself to the factchecking Last Night. This is something his aides have grown more and more frustrated with, their inability to steer him. People watching this will say, no one can ever control Donald Trump, and thats largely true. There were moments when susie wiles, chris acevedo, those running the campaign instilled messaging through trump. This is what we want to talk about. It was more effective when the opponent was President Biden versus Vice President harris. Now, its gone. Trump only says what he wants. He only sits for friendly interviews. I was talking to a republican over the weekend saying, if hed talk about the economy every day, and even though the metrics are still good but americans dont feel it, they were like, if he talked about the economy every day, wed win. But he cant and he wont. He wants to relitigate past grievances with Lesley Stahl. He wants to say, you know, racist things about migrants. He wants to just fight, and they cant keep him on message. Right now, theres a refusal for him to be challenged whatsoever, both in interviews and, im told, and i think joes heard this, as well, even by his aides. He wont listen to them anymore. He does only what he wants to do. Gene, Donald Trump is only speaking in the Echo Chamber. He is preaching to the converted at rallies and interviews he does do. You look at 60 Minutes. Whether Donald Trump likes the interviewer or not, what will you get, 15, 20 Million watching that. The idea is to convince people on the fence, people on the suburbs to come to your side, to persuade them. Hes not doing that. Strategically, what is he thinking with four week left until Election Day . What is his plan . How is he going about this . By the way, as we talk about his outrageous and disgusting lies, were looking at the Bottom Right of our screen, this hurricane thats coming, milton, which is massive and likely to be catastrophic. Hes still out there telling lies about the federal response to the previous hurricane, which Republican Governors and mayors and senators are having to go out and rebut and say the feds are doing their job to help us. Yeah, those lies about the hurricane are worse than disgusting. Dangerous. Theyre really unforgivable, especially given that this second Monster Hurricane is now barrelling down on florida. All he can think about is how to lie about the federal response to helene, which was a total disaster in southern appalachia. 60 Minutes was an opportunity for Donald Trump to talk to republicans, maybe suburban republicans and rightleaning independents who just arent sure they can vote for this guy again. Hes just crazy. Hes exhausting. You know, January 6th, they just cant quite get there. And it was a chance to speak to them and reassure them that he would be actually a different person, because he is Donald Trump. We know who he is. But he didnt take that opportunity. Somebody i know quite well always says that politics is a game of addition, not subtraction. He had a chance to do addition on 60 Minutes, and he just passed it up. Yeah. And instead, he was interviewed by Laura Ingraham, who asked him if he was going to assure people that he would respect the Rule Of Law. So glad she asked him that. She said, a lot of people think youre going to lock up political opponents and, you know, suggests theres been a story in the New York times, people in the media, suggesting youre going to lock them up. Basically, youre not going to do that, are you . He said, well, basically, yeah, a lot of people want me to do that. They think its a good idea. She pushed back hard, right . She pushed back. Shes done that two times. Sean hannity has done it on the Dictator Comment, and they keep saying, youre not really going to do this, are you . He goes on and says, yes, he is. And thats what he is doing. As willie said, speaking to the Echo Chamber. A dark conspiratorial Echo Chamber. Well get to it, but also sounding very much, you know how do you say it . He is talking about genes. That immigrants have bad genes. Its kind of fascist. I think the nazis talked about that. Well have more about those disgusting comments, as well as Kamala Harris, more from 60 Minutes, when were back in a moment. Have some really encouraging news that youll definitely want to hear. The national Weather Service says it has, quote, Explosively Intensified, becoming the fourth strongest hurricane ever recorded by pressure in The Atlantic basin. Milton is expected to weaken slightly before Making Landfall near tampa wednesday night. President biden already approved an Emergency Disaster Declaration and issued a memo confirming fema does have enough funding to support Response Efforts to both milton and the ongoing Recovery Efforts to Hurricane Helene. Ahead of landfall, The State Of Florida also issued mandatory evacuations for several areas. Tampas mayor not mincing words Last Night for those who ignore those orders. Helene was a wakeup call. This is literally catastrophic. I can say without any dramatization whatsoever, if you choose to stay in one of the evacuation areas, youre going to die. Meteorologist michelle grossman, whats the latest here . Hi, willie. The mayor is right. Were looking at a catastrophic situation, lifethreatening throughout the next day or so. We have a little over 40 hours before this makes landfall. Were looking at once again an overachieving storm linked to the Climate Change. It is moving through a super charged gulf with really warm waters just file fueling this S. 155mileperhour winds. It was a category 5 earlier this morning. Now, a very strong storm at category 4. We think itll make landfall as a major hurricane at category 3. Whether it is a category 3 or 4, well see. It is moving northeast at 12 miles per hour. This is the expected path throughout the time here, staying strong as a category 4 storm through night, into the early part of wednesday, wednesday afternoon. There is the expected landfall, between Tomorrow Night at 10 00 p. M. And 2 00 a. M. On thursday. This isnt set in stone, but itll be around then. Well follow it for now. Were looking at lifethreatening conditions. 15 inches of rain if not 18 in spots. 15 foot Storm Surge, unsurvivable. Also looking at 100mileperhour wind gusts. Tropical alerts from the carolinas to the keys. Heed these warnings. Only 43 hours left before this makes landfall. Again, were looking at 15 feet of Storm Surge as we go throughout the landfall. Back to you. If local officials are telling do you to get out, you have time, do it now. Michelle grossman, Thank You so much. Mika, this is obviously an area still picking up the pieces from Hurricane Helene and the devastation it brought over several states less than two weeks ago. Yeah, no, this looks to be absolutely horrific. There have been meteorologists on some networks in tears reporting about this. Yeah. Were going to track it. Especially because they got hammered this year, but also a couple years ago, another terrible hurricane. You look at Cedar Key a few week ago. Wiped out. Now, Cedar Key, tampa. I mean, you look at tampa, its one of the worst places in the united states to have this sort of a Storm Surge going in as far as being heavily populated. I know so many people in tampa hoping that it moves in a direction that will spare lives and spare just in fact, this may be the most damaging, most expensive hurricane in american history if it continues on this path. Well be tracking it throughout the morning. Were going to go back now to politics. Of course, we talked about Donald Trump, who said he was going to do the 60 Minutes Interview. Its part of what happens in president ial campaigns. Every president ial campaign, they do an interview in october. Donald trump then canceled, and his reasons were full of false allegations about 60 Minutes. But Vice President harris did participate. Here are some of the exchanges with interviewer bill whittaker. You want to expand the child tax credit. Yes, i do. You want to give Tax Breaks to firsttime homebuyers. Yes. People starting small businesses. Correct. But it is estimated by the nonpartisan committee for responsible federal budget that your economic plan would add 3 Trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade. How are you going to pay for that . Okay. So the other economists that have reviewed my plan versus my opponent, and determined that my economic plan would strengthen americas economy, his would weaken it. But my plan, bill, if you dont mind, my plan is about saying that when you invest in small businesses, you invest in the middle class, and you strengthen americas economy. Small businesses are part of the backbone of americas economy. Pardon me, madam Vice President , the question was, how are you going to pay for it . Well, one of the things im going to make sure, that the richest among us who can afford it pay their fair share in taxes. It is not right that teachers and nurses and firefighters are paying a higher Tax Rate than billionaires and the biggest corporations. But and i plan on making that fair. Let me tell you what your critics and the columnists say. Okay. They say the reason so many voters dont know you is that you have changed your position on so many things. You were against fracking. Now youre for it. You supported looser immigration policies. Now youre tightening them up. You were for medicare for all. Now youre not. So many people dont truly know what you believe or what you stand for. I know youve heard that. In the last four years, i have been Vice President of the united states, and i was traveling our country. I have been listening to folks. And seeking what is possible in terms of common ground. I believe in building consensus. We are a diverse people, geographically, regionally, in terms of where we are in our backgrounds, and what the american people do want is that we have leaders who can Build Consensus. Where we can figure out compromise and understand its not a bad thing, as long as you dont compromise your values, to find common sense solutions. That has been my approach. You are sitting here with us. The Trump Campaign canceled an interview that they had agreed to, to participate in this broadcast. What do you make of that . If he is not going to give your viewers the ability to have a meaningful, thoughtful conversation, Question And Answer with you, then watch his rallies. Youre going to hear conversations that are about himself and all of his personal grievances. And what you will not hear is anything about you, the listener. You will not hear about how he is going to try to bring the country together, find common ground, and, bill, that is why i believe in my Soul And Heart, the american people are ready to turn the page. Vice president Kamala Harris on 60 Minutes Last Night. Joe, barring the fact that the other choice for president believes in nothing except for his own selfinterest. Right. And was a democrat and donated to Kamala Harris campaigns at one point. Right. Putting all of that aside, how do you think she handled that question . You know, i thought it was great. I mean, im a conservative. Always said Donald Trump is not a conservative. Hes not. The News Outlets that are always running interference for him are not conservatives. Yesterday, i quoted Edmund Burke, quoted Russell Kirk, quoted ronald reagan. I go back to this answer, gene robinson, when shes talking about seeking consensus. She said, she talked about seeking common ground. Yeah. Americans want leaders who Build Consensus and compromise. Of course, that requires that, when the facts change, i change my mind. What do you do, sir, is the question. You were so lucky, gene, you missed my history of conservatism 101 class yesterday. I heard it, joe. I did hear it. I did hear it. Well you also quoted my friend, Charles Krauthammer, at length. Yes, i heard it. The best. I love charles. Love charles. A real conservative hero. Charles, by the way, as i was reading through charles again through the weekend, a man whose writing i so deeply love, we discount the written word too much these days. Think, oh, gee, when we write, it doesnt matter so much. Charles is speaking to us and speaking to conservatives and speaking to trump voters, speaking to those who claim to be conservative. Charles is speaking from beyond to them in his words even today. If they just want to read what Charles Krauthammer said, the great conservative mind of our time, and, for importantly, what he said about government. One of the important things the Vice President said, almost lifted directly from the conservative mind. Russell kirk, the introduction to his seventh edition, final edition of the conservative mind, Russell Kirk talked about what conservatism was. He said, conservatives look at custom and convention, conventions forged by Compromise And Consensus over time, and applied prudently. Then at The End, he said, whether we attach ourselves to the party of progress or the party of permanence depends upon the circumstances of the time. Thats what Kamala Harris just said there. Basically saying, yes, i said what i said in 2019. 2020, a lot of things happened. A lot of things changed. Ive traveled the country. Im going to do what Russell Kirk said in the conservative mind. Seek consensus, seek compromise, be prudent over time. This is something that real conservatives would applaud. Gene, for some reason, many who claim to be conservatives is simply arent doing that. Theyre going in the radical direction that Russell Kirk, Edmund Burke, and Real Conservativing warned about. Right. The republican party right now is not a Conservative Party at all. I thought that was a particularly effective answer that Vice President harris gave to the question of why she had changed some of her positions. I think it is, by far, the best answer she has given. I predict she will give it over and over again because its a good answer. Its not just what a conservative what conservative thinkers have said over the years, centuries. Its what Bill Clinton did. Its what popular, effective president s have always done, which is to understand whats possible and to do whats possible and not to try to do the impossible. I just thought it was that was a really effective and powerful answer to a question that a lot of people who are kind of on the fence have been asking. Conservatives that i have been corresponding with particularly recognize The Point, well, shes changed her position on this and that. Look at the way the positions have changed. They have changed toward the center. Theres a reason for that. Gene, let me you this and conservatives gene, what do those conservatives say about Donald Trumps position on abortion . It changes every two minutes. Fair to ask the question. He was prochoice his entire life. Decides to be prolife. He brags about terminating roe v. Wade. Then he says, oh, wait, im going to be a big champion of womens reproductive rights. Then he attacks Desantis Sixweek Abortion ban. Then he flipflops again. How can you even talk about somebody elses changes positions when you have Donald Trump on an issue like abortion flipflopping every day . Right. When i bring that up, they say, well, Thats Trump being trump. Well, no. No, thats crazy. Crazy is what it is. And dishonest. You Cant Trust a word that comes out of his mouth. Again, this should be anathema to the republican party of my youth, the republican party of most of my life, simply would not tolerate this sort of person as an official, much less as President And President ial nominee. Yet, here we are. Maybe someday well have the republican party again. That would be a good thing, by the way, for the democratic party. It would. That would be a good thing for progressives to have their ideas challenged by a serious Conservative Party. But thats not happening right now. You even had the speaker of the house, Mike Johnson Yesterday, not just enabing but encouraging, rationalizing Donald Trumps lies about the Hurricane Response, saying, well, he is unpredictable, which is what people like about him. Lets talk about Vice President harris, jonathan. Saw the questions from 60 Minutes. Tough, fair questions about her record, about the first years of Immigration Policy with this administration. Shell be on the view, with howard stern, with stephen colbert. You have the one big sort of Tent Pole Interview in the middle with 60 Minutes, and perhaps friendlier environments today. Walz sat in an unfriendly environment over the weekend with Fox News. Taped an interview with jimmy kimmel, as well. Theyre ramping up the Media Appearances here. We talked about on the show, some fair, some not, theres criticism she hasnt been doing enough interview. The campaign would say, first of all, we are doing local interviews. Also, this campaign is still brandnew. Were still, you know remember, she became the De Facto nominee in july. There are other things she had to do. But i think they recognize that because of that short window, and even though shes been Vice President for a few years, poll after poll suggests a lot of americans simply dont know her. Bill whittaker mentioned that Last Night on 60 Minutes. 20odd percent of americans feel they dont know her. Her team recognizes, we need to make sure we address that, that people get to know her. They point to data they have. After doing the interviews, people like her more. Shes good at it. Theyre realizing, we need to do more of it. Same with the governor, her running mate, who, of course, got the job because he was so good at interviews. Oddly was put on a shelf several weeks. Im told hell be out more, too. This argument that Kamala Harris does not sit and do serious interviews, lets hold up 60 Minutes. She sat for 60 Minutes. Donald trump ducked it. Donald trump ducked 60 Minutes. Donald trump ducked the debate. Donald trump is ducking any serious interview now because i guess hes thinking hes not up to it. It has to be a confidence thing. You know, in 16, hed call anybody, anytime, anywhere. You couldnt keep him off of shows. He loved it. Now, for the First Time, its why i asked the question at the top of the show, whats going on there . This is not how a guy acts if he wants to win the presidency. I do also want to talk about Tim Walz really briefly. I thought, mika, Last Night, he was in command. He looked good. You know, when the Vice President ial debate, he looked nervous. None of us know. He gets shot out of a cannon as governor of minnesota. Again, you get on this national stage with the lights on you, nobody knows how theyd react. Chances are good most people would react pretty poorly at first. Tim walz Last Night looked like he had his footing. He looked firm, looked in control, and looked confident. It was a good step forward for him. It was a good night for him. He did what a Vice President should do, Vice President ial candidate should do, and reassured everybody that he was steady. Yes, quote, he was a knucklehead, he exaggerated on a couple different things back decades ago, but he is not lying about eating dogs and cats. Right. Hes not lying about hurricane relief, and hes not lying about Trump Winning the 2020 election, like this week. I think most people probably liked what they saw with Tim Walz Last Night. By the way, we have a poll Coming Up. New york times siena poll, usually about 30 points off. Well see what it says this time. I thought he also did a great job on Fox News when he was interviewed, as well. Hes definitely found his footing in the interviews. Again, being shot out of a cannon, same with Kamala Harris. And as far as Donald Trump not doing 60 Minutes, not doing another debate, another instinct i have about this, just from knowing him, you remember how obsessed he was when he was picking his first cabinet, picking people around him. It was all about looks. I dont think he likes the way it looks when the two are contrasted on the screen. Right. Like during the debate or in an interview. I dont think he fairs well. He knows that. He has always had a great Gut Instinct about his image, what works for his image, what doesnt. The branding. Branding part of it all. The blink thing. I think youre right, i dont think he wants to be stacked up next to Kamala Harris because i dont think he likes what he sees. He obviously thinks a lot of her or else he wouldnt have contributed to her in 2014. True. Wouldnt have said the positive things about her that he said. You could say a lot of things about donald j. Trump, but what no one can say is that he is predictable, right . Theres real value in having a Commander In Chief at a dangerous time like this, having someone that our adversaries see as unpredictable. He may indeed be willing to use the appropriate measure of force. That has a great deterring effect, and thats what happened, of course. This isnt theory. Thats what Donald Trump achieved in his first term. As i mentioned earlier, Thats House Speaker Mike Johnson Yesterday touting former President Trumps, quote, unpredictability, rationalizing his behavior. Joining us now, four star retired navy admiral, Nbc News james stavridis. Also out with a new book, the restless wave. Cant wait to talk about it in a minute. Sure. May i ask about unpredictability. Markets dont like unpredictable leaders. Whatbout allies . They hate it. Money flows away from unpredictability and danger, and its the same with alliances. The less predictable you are, the more likely it is your allies will look for other options. Potentially, the greatest Comparative Advantage for the united states is this glittering network of allies. Not only nato, but japan, australia, new zealand, south korea. Together, we comprise 65 of the worlds gdp, willie. We dont want to scare them away. We want to be solid, steady, and reliable. What are you hearing from leaders around the world, military leaders but also diplomatic leaders also the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House, just on the questions of alliances and predictability . Precisely the concern. The domestic political calculus ill leave to experts on Morning Joe. But in my wheel house, cyber, alliances, warfare, all of that network, there is deep concern about specifically that, the unpredictability. Lets remember north korea. One minute, its little Rocket Man who is going to face fire and fury. And the next minute, theyre exchanging the most beautiful Love Letters in the world. You cant run a Foreign Policy like that. You cant maintain alliances, and you cannot be Ready For The World thats coming. One capital that would like more predictability from the united states would be kyiv. But lets turn to the Middle East. Weve heard from President Biden offering some thoughts as to what israels response to iran should be. Hes warning against targeting irans nuclear facilities. Later suggesting some of the Energy And Oil production should also perhaps be off limits. What do you think an appropriate response would be here . We should note, theres no sense at all prime Minister Netanyahu will listen to President Biden. Your final comment is quite correct. I think there are three big target sets, jonathan. One you mentioned, the nuclear facilities. The problem there is its an incredibly hard target. Theyre deeply buried under granite. Theyre scattered around iran, which is three times the size of texas. Very hard, very hard target set. You mentioned energy. Problem there, iran produces 3 , 5 of the Worlds Oil, gas, and energy. Therefore, youre going to kind of bend, if not crack, the global economy by knocking that out. So i think option three is probably where they land, which is go after the military industrial complex. Thats where the mullahs are building the ballistic missiles that threaten israel. Go after the production facilities. Go after the storage. Go after the command and control. Throw in a few targeted, shall we say, eliminations on the side. Do some cyber. Put that package together. I think thats what youre going to see in the next few days. What about the nuclear facilities, admiral . We heard former prime Minister Bennett of israel say we need to go after nuclear facilities. Some people in the u. S. Suggest the same. Whats your view . Im respectful of the former Prime Minister. He is a serious thinker. You can lay out a case to go after the nuclear sites now. Personally, if i were advising the israelis, id say it is not time. Go after the command and control. Go after the Air Defense systems, willie. Prepare, ultimately, if you have to go after those nuclear facilities. But at this moment, in this moment, conduct a proportional strike and go after the Weapons Systems that targeted israel. Principally the ballistic missile sites. Lets turn to the book. The restless wave, a novel of the united states army. You bring a lifetime of experience. Third novel, 14th book. I bet you didnt think youd become a great novelist, but here we are. Tell us about the theme, the great power war. The most quotable person in history, winston churchill, he said, the further you want to look into the future, the more you must want to look to the past. Meaning, you can learn a lot from history. The idea of the book is, its a novel, so its readable. Its a Love Triangle set against the backdrop of the second World War in the pacific. Its about great Power Conflict in the pacific. You know, we dont have to imagine how terrible a war between u. S. The china would be. Weve seen one with the u. S. And japan. Its about new technology sweeping the battlefield in the early days of that war. Last thought, the Easter Egg inside the book is that it is loosely based on dantes inferno. Oh. Admiral. Wow. Im fascinated by David Ignatius novels because he writes things in his novels that he could not write he writes things in fiction that he could not reveal in nonfiction books. Talk about some of the areas that you went into that the readers will be fascinated by that you may not have gone into if you had to attach names, dates, facts to. Yeah, im on a slightly safer ground than my good friend, David Ignatius. Of course, he writes contemporary fiction, whats happening today. A lot of it highly classified. Fortunately, and this is another reason to use the idea of historical fiction, in the restless wave, were able to explore how these new technologies get into the fleet, get into battle. The one i love in the book is the story of code breaking, of cryptography. Joe, it was the cyber and cybersecurity of its day. You see how, in order to attain that level of code breaking, the u. S. Navy had to go, not to the 64 beautiful looking admirals like nimitz. They had to find squirrely captains, who probably looked like Admiral Stavridis in his day. They cracked the codes of japan and delivered the victories at Midway And Lady gulf. A brisk read full of history. The restless wave, a novel of the united states navy. It is on sale today, and it is excellent. Retired four star navy admiral, james stavridis. Congrats on the book. Good to see you. Thank you. Coming up, were tracking Hurricane Milton, a powerful category 4 storm headed to floridas Gulf Coast. The southeast is still reeling from Hurricane Helene. Joining the conversation, we have Msnbc Contributor mike barnicle. And Nbc News and msnbc political analyst, former u. S. Senator, claire mccaskill. We have a lot to cover. Oh, yes. A lot to cover. But before we get there, im thinking Last Night, claire. Wow. Im thinking Last Night. What would it be like to be a Sports Fan in Kansas City . And watch the Kansas City chiefs on one channel, and the Kansas City royals renewing what you and i and mike would remember as a great rivalry from the 1970s, i think. The royals and the yankees. What a night for Kansas City, huh . It was a great night. I didnt have a lot of sleep Last Night. Thank the lord for picture and picture. I was able to watch it all. Travis had another good night. I was just commenting to yankees fan, mr. Geist, that chism gave us good Bulletin Board Material after Last Night, saying the royals were, quote, just lucky. Wasnt luck. Takes a lot of nerve for chism, since he scored the winning run, courtesy of the absent replay gods on thursday. I think we ought to roll into the k looking pretty good on wednesday. Patrick mahomes took time in his Post Game Interview to say thats where he would be on wednesday. Nice. Kind of fun. Yeah. Mike barnicle, these series are just great. 11. Theyre all locked up. You have noted over the past several days that baseball, the magic of baseball has produced some of the better games in all of your years of watching playoff baseball. Some of the better games that you have seen. You know, joe, Last Nights yankee game was the only Lame Edition Weve had in this falls classics that are being played out. I have never seen a string of games as exciting and as wonderful to watch as ive seen, as youve seen, as weve all seen, as the country has seen in the last four or five days. Just incredible baseball. You know, you hold on to it. You cling to it because you know, eventually, its going to end. Then the storm windows come down. Winter starts. But this is a delight to watch. It really is. Theres so many stories here, willie. Of course, the royals making it in. The tigers, man, the detroit tigers, what a cinderella story. These tigers, willie, second half of the season, they just keep coming. Youve got to bring the mets in there, too. Last day of the season, the Playoff Game against the braves. I mean, the way they advanced. Now the phillies. Just two incredible stories, huh . Yeah, it is. The phillies are a great team, but theres something about this mets group. Obviously, theyre frustrated by that Comeback Loss the other night. But theyve got to be happy coming back to New York, tied 11. John, this detroit team, you and i sat at Wrigley Field one afternoon in chicago after the democratic national convention, and they were out of it. They were sellers at the deadline. They were nonfactor. Then they had the best, what, two months of anybody in baseball. This kid, skubal, the pitcher, who many people across the country may not know, seven innings, eight strikeouts, he is incredible. Theres magic in detroit. They were crushed that day. We saw them at wrigley. Since then, they went 228 to finish the season. Playoffs, on a roll. At this moment, skubal is the best pitcher in baseball. They go home and win. The guardians closer, unhittable all year long. Gave us three wins since july 1st. Gives up the threerun homer yesterday. The series is tied. The atmosphere at phillies mets will be off the charts at Citi Field this evening. Willie, you had a lot to celebrate with vanderbilt. We should note here, the Back Page of the New York post, court gestures, yankees do lose. Lets talk about Aaron Judge for a moment. Greatest season maybe in baseball history. No, thats not the part we were going to. Okay. Despite his regular season success, which was immense, this is now a Track Record of october struggles. And the columnist in the New York post why, why . Willie, willie, willie, you know catching rays over here. When i dont yankees lose, i dont even bring it up. I go to claire. When Alabama loses, i congratulate you. All class. Lemire, lemire, that guy is like, oh, my god, all class. No class. Straight yeah. Go ahead, willie. Leafing through the New York tabloids to find a bad article about Aaron Judge, and he found it. Takes three of the best players in baseball. Mookie betts, Wood Jr. , Aaron Judge, theyre having a weak playoffs. But it happens. They bounce back. Id love to have all three. What he said. Id love one back. Mookie anyway. Okay. What he said. Lets get to politics. New polling out this morning showing momentum for Vice President Kamala Harris, but the 2024 race is essentially tied. In the new survey from the New York times and siena college, harris leads former President Trump by three points, 49 to 46 , among likely voters nationwide. Although that is within the Polls Margin of error. By the way, this poll is 47 points either way. Its a shift toward harris from a poll taken last month, which showed the two candidates deadlocked at 47 each. 28 say the economy is their most important issue, which is double the amount of the second most important issue, and that would be abortion. And in terms of who those voters trust more to handle the issue they find most important, harris has closed the Gap On Trump from five points last month to two points this month. Claire, the issues have tightened up a great deal over the past month. The economy, immigration, there were massive gaps. Theyve tightened up. Obviously, abortion breaks Kamala Harris direction pretty dramatically. You know, when you talk about Leadership Abilities and capabilities and leadership characteristics, that obviously harris wins that easy. Its fascinating. Im curious what youre seeing in Trend Lines in the polls right now that maybe helps you project out whats likely to happen four weeks from now. Well, i think the Trend Lines are all pretty good. Ill be candid, im not sure i have a lot of confidence in the polling since all of it is margin of Error Polling at this point. That really does mean margin of error. They could have it two, three, four points wrong either way. Depending on how large the survey is. Im not confident in the modeling. I think pollsters have modelled differently depending on the cycle. Clearly, they modelled wrong in 16. They probably overcompensated some in 2022 when they modelled. Ill tell you what i like. I like the fact that i live in trump country, right . We have a lake home. Four years ago, eight years ago, you couldnt go anywhere without seeing trump regalia. On the lake, Everybodys Boat had trump flags. Its not as much. I do think there is an enthusiasm gap. You see that in the polls. But one place in the polls where i believe it, i do think people are tired of him. Hes old. Right now, the only place undecided voters are seeing him is in clips from his rallies. Hes only going on friendly outlets which doesnt reach like a 60 Minutes does. Doesnt reach like the view. Not even like howard stern, frankly. So i think shes being very smart about where shes going to do these interviews. I hope she keeps it up, and i hope we ramp up the rallies again the last couple weeks with noted, important guests like barack obama. I think she can bring it home. You know, its so interesting. Mike barnicle, politicians look at Anecdotal Evidence a lot more than the smart Men And Women who report on politicians. But i lived on Anecdotal Evidence when he was running. Id see somebody put up a billboard and laugh. Waste your money. But i looked at the yard signs. If somebody puts my name or puts my Opponents Name in the yard, that is a real vote of confidence for that person. I will say, just anecdotally, what claire said, we live in what would be considered trump country. We are surrounded by supporters of Donald Trump. And i havent seen the signs this year. Ive been shocked. Weve both been shocked driving around at the Harris Walz signs weve seen. This is all anecdotal. I know a lot of snobs that went to real he good Ivy League schools will be saying how stupid it is, but i will tell you, and i remember you talking about driving around, teddy kennedy. Hed straighten up signs in yards for him. Hed ask people to put his signs in their yards. Same with claire, i have not seen the enthusiasm. In fact, i just havent seen the trump signs, the trump flags. I havent seen the eagerness this year that i saw around my community four years ago. You know, joe, i agree with you 100 on Anecdotal Evidence, visual evidence that you see. Lawn signs, things like that, 100 . Theres another aspect to it i find interesting this year, and its the listening to the country. Listening to people at the Grocery Store or gas station. That kind of Anecdotal Evidence. What i hear, i dont live in trump country, obviously, but what i hear continually is the sense of unease among people about where the country is headed, about where we are now, and what direction were going in. Im not a political Consultant Or Anything like that, but if it were up to me, Id Start having one of the campaigns, the Harris Campaign especially, urge people to vote for the country. Think about the country. Think about your children. Think about how you want your children to grow up and under what kind of a person you want your children to be led by. Most of all, dont think about party first. Think about the country and all of the impact that specific people have on the country, through their verbiage, through their rhetoric, their behavior. Ask who the candidates are, then think about the united states of america when you vote. Two notes here. One on anecdotal. A family in western pennsylvania, to The Point of 2016, signs were everywhere. You could feel it coming, the Trump Win there. Thats not the case this time around, not nearly as many signs. Secondly, the New York times had a good piece. Wrote about why the polls are showing different things. Theres methodologies people are using to wait for the undercounted trump vote. Are they waiting too much or perhaps overcounting it . Remains to be seen. Willie, one Battleground State people are talking about in particular, michigan. Two democratic congressmen on the ground there, Congressman Dzingel and congressman slotkin, theyre not sure the state is put away. Its close. We have a new poll, detroit news, showing harris up three. End of the day, its really close. Were four weeks from Election Day. Well see, im told, a blitz. Campaign events, interviews, and money spent, joe, from the democratic ticket. Yeah. To try to build a return to the Enthuiasm Harris got at her launch. Couple things. First of all, willie, yes, these pollsters obviously horrified that theyre under counting the trump vote. Because you look at the wisconsin poll. I think abc news, washington polls had right before the 2020 campaign, it had Biden Up 13 point. You look at the real clear politics average in michigan, day of thE Election, Biden Up by nine points. They undercounted the trump vote. Theyre trying not to do it again, especially in the upper midwestern states. Right now, theyre guessing. Theyre guessing best they can. I dont think anybody other than, ive got to say, the partisan pollsters that should not be counted in averages but they just are. Thats one thing. But you do have michigan. Theres a reason to be concerned in michigan. Im sure the Harris Campaign is going to focus a good bit on there, even if there is a poll out today that shows she is up in michigan. This is the detroit news, Wdiv Poll thats out now. Shes actually Donald Trump was ahead in august by one point. Kamala harris up by three points in this poll. Im sure this poll also is within the margin of error. Also some real numbers that came out. Party registration in pennsylvania in october, its favoring republicans. I think most democrats see pennsylvania going the way of ohio. First you had florida Shifting Red. Then ohio Shifting Red in a dramatic way. Right now, democrats feel like theyre in a race against time between now and thE Election. Because if you look at party registration, pennsylvania this past year has been trending republican. So they are pushing back against that tide right now. Thats why democrats view pennsylvania, of course, as a mustwin, boosting turnout in Philadelphia Area and in pittsburgh, as well, going to be critical to this. On the question of that anecdotal enthusiasm, its not just that you see more signs for democrats than you saw four years ago or eight years ago. Its that just within the last couple of months, youre seeing a Harris Walz sign in a yard where you perhaps did not see a biden harris sign. Thats the enthusiasm that claire is talking about. We mentioned Donald Trump ducked the interview with 60 Minutes, but in one of the interviews he did do yesterday, he said migrants convicted of murder have, quote, bad genes. The former president made the baseless claim on a conservative Radio Show while complaining about the biden harris Administrations Border policies. Citing a misleading statistic about the rate of crime connected to migrants. How about allowing people to come through an open border, 13,000 of which were murderers. Many of them murdered far more than one person, and theyre now happily living in the united states. You know, now a murderer, i believe this, its in their genes. Weve got a lot of bad genes in our country right now. Spokesperson for the department of Homeland Security called that statistic, the 13,000 number, misleading, explaining 13,000 includes people who entered the country over the past 40 years or more, including, of course, during Donald Trumps presidency. It also includes many people currently in jail. The biden White House chaired trumps comments to his past statements that migrants are, quote, poisoning the blood of the country. A Campaign Spokesperson said trump was clearly referring to murderers, not migrants. Gene, he did say he was talking about murderers with the genetics. We can talk about that argument. Also, the inflation of the numbers. Again, every day, just throwing things out so fast, he hopes, and so furiously, that People Cant keep up with the lies. But this is another one. Yeah, this is another one. That was pure eugenics is what it was. Lets call it what it was. Its shocking, hard to be shocked by what Donald Trump says anymore. Again, he keeps reaching new lows. Hes talking about corrupting the Gene Pool of the united states. Its just extraordinary. You know, to circle back one second about the Anecdotal Evidence were all seeing, as i drove through part of virginia a few weeks ago thats clearly trump country, where people are going to vote for trump, no yard signs, just two in an hour of driving the Winding Roads in the virginia mountains. Part of that may be that the Trump Campaign has outsourced so much of its Ground Operation that ive heard, again, anecdotally, people dont even know where to get a yard sign. And that does not bode particularly well for how the campaign, the Trump Campaign is going to do in actually getting its voters to the polls. To the extent they need encouragement, they need to be visited again and again. They might need a ride, whatever. I kind of wonder how theyre set up. Its not the Trump Campaign thats going to be doing that. Its the superpacs that theyve outsourced this work to. Thats a dangerous strategy because they dont have control of it. Again, well see how that works out. I dont think it is working out very well right now. So in an interview on Fox News, Donald Trump was asked how hed restore faith in the Justice System. The former president refused to say he wouldnt Use Government institutions to go after his political rivals. Take a look. How will you restore faith in our Justice System . A lot of people will say, well, hes just going to do to them what they did to him and get back at them. Yeah, yeah. A lot of people say thats what should happen, if you want to know the truth. Right . But i think you know, punitively using Government Institutions is what got us in this mess in the first place. Our Town Hall we did back in february, one of the lines that resonated, i think, with people, is when you said, my revenge is going to be my success. Well, i do believe that. But i will say this, they have started a terrible precedent. Weve never had this. We do have that in Third World countries, banana republics, a lot in south america, going after someone politically. Weve never had it to any great extent, really almost at all. Youre not going to do that. When you get to office, Youll Look at your political enemies and i want to make this the most successful country in the world. Thats what i want to do. So thats what should happen, Donald Trump said, claire mccaskill. Finally at The End, Laura Ingraham gives him another leading question. He said, ill make us the most successful country in the world. But he keeps coming back to this, where Fox News hosts try to put him on track and he says, well, thats what a lot of people say. The crowd starts murmuring, and he says, see . Yeah. Dictator on Day One. He pushes back on that, pushes back on this. It is the old saying, when people tell you who they are, believe them. Yeah, both Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham have tried repeatedly to clean up on Aisle 5 with Donald Trump, and he refuses to get the broom out. He wont clean it up. He wants that out there. He wants that. He actually believes hes going to win this election by pumping his base, not by appealing to all of america, not by unifying the country, not by convincing voters who are on the Fence Or Havent made up their mind. He just wants to amp up his base. He knows they want to hear that hes going to go after his opponents, whether the facts are there or not. Now, having said that, i do want to reassure people. Ultimately, in the united states of america, we still have a pretty good gatekeeper called juries. Juries want evidence, joe. Ive stood in front of many of them. They will not give a prosecutor a conviction without evidence. Judges still determine, what is admissible evidence and what isnt . Someoneegomaniac attempt to thwart the Rule Of Law in this country, i have a lot of doubt he could succeed at doing it. Having said that, theres no question he wants everybody to believe hes going to do it. Frankly, that alone should scare people, especially when you realize one of the advantages we have over the rest of the world in terms of our economics is belief in our Rule Of Law. Thats why businesses are scared of china. They dont want to have their contract voided. They dont want to be taken to court with no evidence. This rule of Law Thing is a big, darn deal, and i would have used another word there but its early. So it is he doesnt have respect for it. Its very clear. He doesnt understand hes being charged with crimes because theres evidence. Right. Theres yeah, theres the Rule Of Law that protects democracy, but also to your point, protects american capitalism. We have talked about democracy a lot. We should talk about american capitalism, too. You have respect for the Rule Of Law, and its not a random guy, mike barnicle, that wants to bring all the power into the White House for the justice department, which he wants to do. Wants to bring all the power in to give him the ability to ban Tv Channels that he wants to ban. To arrest people that he wants to arrest. To execute generals that he thinks are insufficiently loyal to him. To use s. E. A. L. Team six to execute his political rivals, then claim that he cant be arrested if he is President Of The United States. We could go through all of these things. Again, laura said that hed said something that was very concerning in an earlier Town Hall meeting. My revenge will be my success. He said, yes, yes, it will. Echoes all the threats against all the people that hes made. Of course, probably the line of the campaign, i am your retribution. You know, joe, we do this every day, every morning. We repeat ourselves nearly every morning in talking about this guy, and its depressing. I can only imagine the impact it has on voters out there listening to them each and every morning. Each and every day. And hes on the precipice of again becoming President Of The United States. Thats a shocking thing to me. I think maybe to a lot of other people, as well. But we have to live with it, and we have to figure it out. Again, i revert back to, you know, what this country is all about. If you listen to what he says, whether its about, you know, peoples genes, whether its about haitians, whether its about whoever it is, he will demean someone or some fragment of society. We are a collective nation called the united states of america. We are better than him. This man tried to overturn a legitimatE Election, tried to overturn an existing government. All the other stuff is a sideshow compared to that one fact. He thought so little of the united States Constitution that he just wanted to rip it up and throw it out the window. Hes this close to becoming President Of The United States again. Think about that. Unbelievable. Think about your vote. Weve got a lot more still ahead on Morning Joe. We are tracking, of course, massive Hurricane Milton, which is aiming at tampa and beyond late tomorrow. Well be following that. Also, a new piece in The Atlantic is warning about religious radicalization happening in plain sight. Well talk about the movement that helped fuel the January 6th capitol attack, and how it is revving up again ahead of november. Ive got to say, seeing the crosses that were being carried and, you know, using the Lords Name in vain, basically, while they were beating the hell out of cops, which is one of many sickening elements on January 6th. Well be right back. The winter escapes sale is now on. Visit sandals. Com or call 1800sandals. Its our son, he is always up in our business. Visit sandals. Com its the Verizon 5g Home internet i got us. Oh. He used to be a competitive gamer but with the higher lag, he cant keep up with his squad. So now were his squad. What are kevins plans for the fall . Hes going to college. Out of state, yeah. Yeah in the fall. Change of plans, ive decided to stay local. Oh excellent oh thats great why would i ever leave this . Aw we will do anything to get him gaming again. You and kevin need to fix this internet situation. Heard my name i swear to god, kevin we told you to wait in the car. Everyone in my old squad has xfinity. Less lag, better gaming im gonna need to charge you for three people. Beautiful shot of capitol in washington, d. C. Its been nearly four years since the deadly insurrection at the u. S. Capitol. Now, with the next election just four weeks away, the movement that fueled January 6th is revving up again. Thats according to a new piece in The Atlantic which profiles a prominent evangelist who is accusing Vice President Kamala Harris and a demonic government of trying to silence the church. According to the piece, an unapologetic exercise in religious radicalization is happening in plain sight. The point was to transform a likeminded crowd of Donald Trump supporting believers into godappointed warriors, ready to do whatever the almighty might require of them in november and beyond. Wow. Joining us now to discuss this, theologian and New York times bestselling author jim wallace. Jim, i dont know where to begin here. I know you and i have we may disagree on some issues politically, but you and i both love the gospel and love the church and want whats best for the church, Jesus Christs church. But what were seeing now is leading to Pews Emptying out. What weve seen is leading to many younger evangelicals breaking sharply from their parents on a multitude of issues. From the climate to israel. I mean, dramatic shifts. And it even led to a dear friend of ours, tim keller, saying before he died that he no longer calls himself an evangelical because that word is so freighted with political meaning instead of religious meaning. Talk about a crisis. This isnt a left right crisis. This is a crisis of the church. This is a crisis about the Emptying Pews We Saw in western europe, but were now starting to see in the united states. Good morning, joe and mika. Thanks for covering this. I like to say, dont go left, dont go right, go deeper. Thats what we have to do here. We seem to have lost, joe, something in many parts of our churches. Those who call themselves christians are supposed to be followers of jesus christ. Many of these teachings that youre lifting up here are literally antithetical to the teachings of jesus. In that rally that mika talked about, their favorite word was warrior. In fact, they said, say warrior the crowd chanted, warrior. Theyre godappointed warriors, they say, to help Donald Trump win thE Election. Well, jesus said, blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of god. And some of these people in this movement, this militant power movement, say that christians have been too loving. Jesus says, love your neighbor as yourself. Dont turn your neighbors into enemies. Love your neighbor as yourself. That shows whether we love god or not. So in that rally, they talked about fire. Go in the fire. Youll find jesus in the fire, and hell set you free from the fire. Thats not what the gospel says. John says, you will know the truth, says jesus, and the truth will set you free. As mika said a while ago, we keep hearing lies and lies and lies. Jesus says, the truth will set us free. So how do we bring jesus into this conversation thats become so much a false religion, what i call the false white gospel. Its so politicized now. Lets bring jesus and the text back into the conversation. Jim, this is gene robinson. Presumably, these preachers have read the gospel. Presumably, theyre familiar with the sermon on the mount. I mean, how how do they justify . What is their rational for completely departing from that, for ignoring what jesus said and what jesus taught and what jesus did . How does anyone who calls himself a christian preacher do that . Theyre actually saying, gene, that those teachings dont apply. Loving your neighbor doesnt apply. The image of god doesnt apply to this moment. Theyre reading what theyve said i couldnt believe this, and i want to quote it right. We are preparing for war. I am not on this earth to be blessed but to be armed and dangerous. Followers of jesus are not thought to be the ones who are armed and dangerous. Your point, gene, they are ignoring the teaching of jesus. Rather than have a political argument, i try im On The Road all the time now with these people. Im saying, lets talk about what jesus said and what he did. We are called to be peacemakers, conflict resolvers, not conflict creators. These people are conflict creators. They had Jesus Flags in the capitol as they were beating police. So this is a movement thats gone afar from the teaching of jesus. The good news, if there is a new movement afoot, really an old movement, i see diverse christians and others all around the country who are confronting and countering this White Christian nationalist movement with the teaching of jesus. To your point, it is White Christian nationalism versus jesus christ. And the more we frame it that way, the better conversation were going to have. Well, you know, the thing is, it comes down to, you talk about the words of jesus. If youre a believer, read the Red Letters. By the way, it is so overwhelming what we are called to do, to love our enemies, to love our neighbors as ourselves. Who are our neighbors . Jesus talks about the good samaritan who went out of his way to help an enemy when religious leaders walked past. Are we to forgive our enemies . Yes. Were to forgive 70 times 7. Were supposed to pray for those who persecute us. Love those who hate us. I mean, thats why Donald Trump could never understand why Nancy Pelosi said that she prayed for Donald Trump, as do i. As do christians. You pray for people, whether theyre on your side or not. One final thought, and i just have a recommendation to people out there. A great History Book about christianity that really explains this very well, tom hollands dominion. What he says is, that in the world that jesus came into, the romans, before them the greeks, they worshipped power. They worshipped generals that slayed millions. You know, tens of thousands. They worshipped conquerers. Here comes jesus, a man who turned his back on worldly power. Render under caesar that which is his, and render to god what is gods. A man who died the most humiliating death, a Slaves Death on a cross. The romans were repelled by the thought that anybody could worship somebody with so little worldly power. And that was the radicalism. That was the spark that spread christianity through the Roman Empire and has shaped our world more than any other phenomenon. Yet, these people, they want the power that jesus clearly told them was temporal and irrelevant. Joe, thats the heart of this issue. Its a movement for power. Using religion, abusing religion to gain political power. One of the Temptations Of Jesus was satan said, i will give you the world. Heres the world. Ill give it to you if you bow down and worship me. Theyve done that now. Theyre going for power. Its the old, joe, as you know, the dominionist theology. Christians should have dominion, control, and power. I think this is a moment to bring people back to what you call the Red Letters of jesus. Theyre ignoring the teaching of jesus. So i want to have this conversation, this debate if you will, around the country for this next month. What did jesus say, and what did he do . I think a lot of christians are going to they want to know what you said, and the people are using religion and their version of it to gain power. So that power is, in fact, what theyre about. Jesus says, ive come to bring you a different way. Love your neighbor. Love your enemies. As you said, thats what jesus said. Maybe this could be a moment where we actually come back to jesus in the churches, and a whole lot of young people i teach are watching and waiting to see what christians do, where they stand up and speak out or not. This is a test of democracy, as you point out, every day. Its also a test of faith, the integrity of faith. We have to talk about what faith means. The factor in thE Election has to not be White Christian nationalism, where race is all of that, but, in fact, the teaching of jesus. Theologian and author jim wallis, Thank You so much. His latest book is entitled the false white gospel, rejecting christian nationalism, reclaiming truth faith, and refounding democracy. We appreciate your coming on this morning. But North Carolina is a disaster. It was also hit very hard, but they dont have the people. Theyre complaining, theres no people around to help. That was a horrific storm, much worse. Its late in the season. You wouldnt think a thing like that could happen. Georgia, Alabama, and tennessee, South Carolina, florida. Its been an amazing period of time. The response has been very weak, unbelievably weak. Nobody has ever seen such a weak response. Theres a lot of misinformation being pushed out there by the former president about what is available, in particular to the survivors of helene. First of all, it is irresponsible. Its not about you, its about him. Fema has so many resources that are available to folks who desperately need them. Vice president Kamala Harris yesterday responding to Donald Trumps repeated lies about the federal Governments Response to Hurricane Helene. Joining us now is North Carolinas democratic governor, Roy Cooper. Governor, good morning. Its great to see you. I want to ask you, of course, about the suffering in your state, the damage in your state, some of those apocalyptic scenes. It is something thats permeated a little into corners of this country, the idea that the administration, that Fema Isnt doing enough. Weve heard that rebutted by your republican colleagues, the governor of georgia, the governor of tennessee, the senator, thom tillis, from your state. What has the federal response been like in these last couple of weeks . Its been very good, willie. Were just keeping our heads down and making progress in Response And Recovery in western North Carolina. There are thousands and thousands of local, state, and federal officials here on the ground. The Fema Administrator has been with me on the ground the the time. She just went to florida this morning, which is where she needs to go with Hurricane Milton coming. We have almost 1,800 national guard soldiers. We have almost 1,500 military soldiers from military bases. We have emergency personnel, fema personnel, local government response, Emergency Response people. It has been an amazing response to a catastrophic storm. But this swirling vortex of disinformation is beginning to affect people there on the ground. I had an officer come up to me and say, why are they saying we arent doing anything . In fact, this is demoralizing to all of the people who are working so hard, those first responders who went into peoples homes and pulled them out of windows in swirling waters. People who are working around the clock to get oxygen bottles and insulin to people in the remote rugged areas of the mountains. The people who are working to get the power back on. We have gone from A Million to about 140,000 power outages. People working to restore communications and water systems. And you are also making some people weary of applying for Aid And Relief because you have these crazy stories about fema coming in and taking Peoples Land and stopping donations from coming in. And its very frustrating when youre on the ground working hard every day. In fact, i am going to leave here and go to the emergency Operations Center and head back out west again. Ill tell you what. The people of western North Carolina are resilient and determined and courageous and we are going to be with them every step of the way as we recover from this catastrophic storm. We have never seen anything like it. Yeah, the lies are shameful. I am sorry you have to address them here. It is important to get the truth out there. So, governor, lets talk about the people, we are seeing the scenes that just take your breath away, frankly. Do you feel like you all have been able to reach the places that seemed unreachable in many a ways, at least by road . We saw helicopters of course, some people bringing aid in by horseback. Do you feel like you have gotten on the places you need to go to begin this recovery . It has been a massive response and we believe that the places have been covered, but when you go to the North Carolina mountains, even before this storm on a beautiful sunny day, there are rugged areas that are difficult to get to even when things are good. And so there are still roads being cut into areas. Thats one of the reasons we brought in national guard, military, department of transportation people to open those roads and to provide relief in those areas. We are still conducting Search And Rescue in many of these remote areas. Most of the counties have cleared unaccounted for people, but we know its critical to continue Search And Rescue, to find people who may have died or find people who still potentially may need help. Governor, speaking of the western mountains of North Carolina, i was speaking to members of my family who live up there. They finally got a Cell System Yesterday and contacted i was contacted them, actually. But the scope of damage they described was incredible to me. Roads out. Bridges out. No effective means of transportation to get one place to another because of the damage that has been done. So the scope of the damage, how is it possible for you to keep getting more and more supplies, food, clothing, water into these places . What is the degree of difficulty in doing that . Well, we have amazing air corps working with Helicopter Support in and out, in and out, in and out of these communities doing air drops. People going through rough terrain, carrying supplies, making sure that they get there. And in a lot of western North Carolina there has been success in getting the power back on and getting communications back up and getting water systems fixed. But we know that we have so much more to do because of the massive devastation. When you are in the mountains, its very difficult to make repairs on these roads. So we brought in the u. S. Army corps of engineers and brought in specialists from all over the country to help us get back on track here. We also know that as we recover and rebuild we have to be smart about it. We now know what Climate Change is causing in this world. We know the weather, the intensity of it. Water went where it has never gone before. So as western North Carolina rebuilds, and it will, we need to make sure we are more resilient. We need to make sure that we are stronger and that we are preparing for this kind of Weather Event in addition to taking steps to move to clean energy and to make sure that we lead the way in the world in fighting Climate Change. Glad at least you are getting the help you need. So much heroic work over these last many days from first responders, from national guard, Army Core of engineers and on down the line. I know you will need that going forward. We send our best to you and your state. Democratic governor to Roy Cooper of North Carolina. Governor, thanks so much. Thank you. So, claire, these are this is two weeks now from Donald Trump. Really especially disgusting lies to tell to use this moment and this suffering and this devastation as some sort of a political wedge and to suggest in the early days that the biden Administration Isnt helping because they are red areas and they are going to vote for Donald Trump, to on and on, all in garbage. We have heard from Republican Governors and senators and members of congress. We are getting the help we need. Thank god for that. Yeah, this is exhibit a of the result of Donald Trump trashing our institutions repeatedly for a decade. When you feed your Base Garbage that the government is the problem behind every corner, then all of a sudden people allow these lies to take root and these lies are astounding if you think about it. I mean, i had someone in the circle of my life actually say, you know, they are seizing the federal government is seizing he referenced that, seizing your property if you make a claim. Well, that is so its so incredibly depressing that anybody would believe that. And that they are blocking aid. They are not letting aid come through. They are closing the airspace to anybody who is trying to come in to help. It is fantastic lies. Fantastical. They are just out of control. But they are taking root because he has trained his followers to believe their government is evil. And on that note, willie, i was speaking to a White House official yesterday. They expressed earn about Fema Representatives going to the areas because they are afraid of what they might find because of the danger posed by trump supporters believing these lies who think the government is coming to take their property and they would be harassed or worse. They have had to have conversations about that. Having to do that shows the depravity here. As usual, he knows its a lie, he knows its damaging and doesnt give a damn. Not bilaterally without ukraine, no. Ukraine must have a say in the future of ukraine. As president , would you support the effort to expand nato to include ukraine . Those are all issues that we will deal with if and when it arrives at that point. Right now we are supporting Ukraines Ability to defend itself against russias unprovoked aggression. Donald trump, if he were president , putin would be sitting in kyiv right now. He talks about, oh, he can end it on Day One. You know what that is . Its about surrender. What is about surrender, i mean, you look from the very beginning, mika, of the invasion of ukraine and you had Donald Trump talking about how brilliant Vladimir Putin was as he was slaughtering people as the troops came into ukraine. Yeah, that was just part of Vice President Kamala Harris Interview with 60 Minutes. We will have much more from that wide ranging sitdown and the Programs Explanation of why Donald Trump did not participate. Meanwhile, the former president made another disparaging remark about migrants suggesting some of them have bad genes. Well what does that sound like . I am sure whoever the host was pushed back hard. Thats straight out of the nazi playbook. I know that all republicans will speak out against that today. For sure. Plus, as the southeast continues to recover from Hurricane Helene, another po it tensionally catastrophic storm is headed for florida. We will bring you the latest on Hurricane Milton, expected to make landfall late tomorrow. Tampa and surrounding areas are bracing. To politics. 28 days until Election Day and Last Night cbs aired its 60 Minutes Interview with Kamala Harris. Now, the program has interviewed the candidates in every president ial election dating back to 1968. But Donald Trump backed out this year and before airing the interview with Vice President harris, 60 Minutes began with a note about trump. Heres part of that explanation. Its been a tradition more than half a century that the major party candidates for president Sit Down with 60 Minutes in october. In 1968, it was Richard Nixon and hubert humphrey. This year Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump accepted our invitation. But unfortunately last Week Trump canceled. The campaign offered shifting explanations. First it complained that we would Fact Check the interview. We Fact Check every story. Later, trump said he needed an apology for his interview in 2020. Trump claims correspondent Lesley Stahl said in that interview that hunter bidens controversial laptop came from russia. She never said that. Trump has said his opponent doesnt do interviews because she cant handle them. He had previously declined another debate with harris, so tonight may have been the largest audience for the candidates between now and Election Day. Wow. You know what . I got to ask Jonathan Lemire well, before i ask, just i think its fascinating. Being factchecked. I love when People Fact check me. I really do. If i make a mistakes, i want to know what i said was wrong. People can disagree with me. Opinions are one thing. I want to be factchecked. If i say something wrong, i want to know that. Like most adults that i know are the same way. The fact that Donald Trump and his Vice President ial nominee are so horrified at the prospect of being factchecked suggests, well, its the tell that they are still lying this week about the 2020 election. They are lying in a way thats very destructive for the people of North Carolina and South Carolina about hurricane relief. In a way thats getting in the way, in a way that Republican Governors are pushing back. They are lying about dogs and cats being eaten in ohio when the republican governor there is saying thats a lie as well. The lies continue over and over again. But he doesnt go on because of Fact Check, right . Why are they scared of Fact Check . Because they lie all the time. And you literally can see it every day on the campaign trail. Then he says he doesnt go on for an apology. He wants an apology from Lesley Stahl for something that never even happened. Deranged, disconnected, diluted, whatever i want to call it, or maybe just scared. Finally, he says Kamala Harris, this is bizarre, cant Sit Down on interviews because she doesnt know the issues. Again its either confession or projection. Here Donald Trump is the one who skipped the 60 Minutes Interview, First Time in 50 years a candidate has done that. And this is a one that refused to do a debate even on Fox News. Even on Fox News, who many hosts on that network are echoing Donald Trumps disinformation. Cant do a real interview one of the most popular hosts suggests that Civil War is better than voting and that they need to move past voting, yet she is willing to debate him there and he refuses it to do it. So Last Night as i was watching this i started asking, like, whats going on, nan . Like, what i have heard from people inside his campaign i know you have, too. They are very careful. Oh, real frustration that they have no idea what this is this guys going to do. He doesnt do the things he should do to win, and they cant control him at all. What are you hearing . Is there an understanding on his part that he is no longer up to sitting for serious interviews where people challenge him . I mean, is he is his age as Peter Baker wrote in the New York times yesterday, really preventing him from doing serious interviews . The debate not doing the debate really i am dumbfounded because this is not the behavior of somebody who wants to win an election. No. Two things here. First of all, Vice President harris did receive criticism as we know in recent weeks for not doing many interviews. Democrats are saying she needs to do more. Thats changing. She sat for 60 Minutes. That aired Last Night. Today she is with the view, howard stern, stephen colbert. She did a popular podcast over the weekend. She has been consistent saying, hey, i want a second debate with Donald Trump. Trump said no to the Debate And Trump is the one who said no to 60 Minutes. First of all, j. D. Vance in the Vice President debate was upset saying to moderators, wait, i thought you werent going to Fact Check me when they did modestly because he was lying about something. Trump didnt wouldnt to submit himself to the factchecking Last Night. His aides are frustrated with their inability to steer him. No one can control Donald Trump, but thats largely true. There were moments in the campaign were able to inis still some messaging from trump. Of this is what we want to talk about this election. It was more effective President Biden than Vice President Kamala Harris. That is now gone. Trump says whatever he wants. He only sits for friendly interviews. I was talking to a republican over the weekend saying if he would talk about the economy every day and even though the metrics are good but a lot of americans dont feel it, like, if he would talk about the economy every day, wed win. But we want, and he wont. He wants to relitigate past grievances with Lesley Stahl, stay racist things about migrants, he wants to just fight and they cant keep him on message. And right now there is a refusal for him to be challenged in interviews and i am told and i think joe heard this as well by his aides. He wont listen anymore. He does only what he wants to do. To jonathan and joes point here, Donald Trump is speaking only now in the Echo Chamber, exclusively in the Echo Chamber. Preaching to the converted at rallies and interviews he does do. You look at 60 Minutes, whether Donald Trump likes the interview or not, 15, 20 Million at least people watching that. The idea this E Election is to convince people may be sitting on the fence and people in the suburbs to come to your side, to persuade them. He is not doing any of that. Its fair to ask strategically what he is thinking here with four weeks left until Election Day. What is his plan . How is he going about this . As we talk about his outrageous and disgusting lies, we are looking on the Bottom Right of the screen this hurricane coming, milton, which is massive and likely to be catastrophic and he is still out there telling lies about the federal response to the previous hurricane which Republican Governors and mayors and senators are having to go out and rebut in saying the feds are doing their job to help us. Yeah, there are lies about the hurricane, they are worse than disgusting dangerous. They are really unforgiveable, especially given that this the second Monster Hurricane is now barreling down on florida and all he can think about is how to lie about the federal response to helene, which was a total disaster in southern appalachia. You know, 60 Minutes was on opportunity for Donald Trump to talk to republicans. Maybe the suburban republicans and rightleaning independents who just they just arent sure they can vote for this guy again. He is just hes crazy. He is exhausting. You know, January 6th. They just they cant quite get there, and it was a chance to speak to them and reassure them that he would be actually a different person because he is Donald Trump and we know who he is. But he didnt take that opportunity. Somebody i know quite well always says that politics is a game of addition, not subtraction. He had a chance to do addition on 60 Minutes and he just passed it up. Yeah. And instead he was interviewed by Laura Ingraham, who asked him if he was going to assure people that he would respect the Rule Of Law oh, im so glad she asked him that. And she said, a lot of people think you are going to lock up political opponents, and people in the media, people you dont like, lock them up, and you are not going to basically, you are not going to do that . He said, yeah, a lot of people think its a good idea. She pushed back, right . She pushed back. She did that two times. Sean hannity did it on Dictator Comment and they say, you are not going to do this, are you . He says, yes, he is. And thats what he is doing. As willie said, speaking to the Echo Chamber and a dark conspiratorial Echo Chamber and we are going to get to it. Also sounding very much, you know, i how do you say it . I mean, he he is talking about genes and that the that immigrants have bad genes. Its kind of fascist, you know . I think the Nazis Taubtd about that. More about those disgusting comments as well as Campus Campus more from her on 60 Minutes when were back in a moment. This is literally catastrophic, and i can say without any dramatization whatsoever, if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you are going to die. Yeah, we will be tracking it throughout the morning. Back now to politics. Of course, we talked about Donald Trump, who said he was going to do the 60 Minutes Interview. Its part of what happens in president ial campaigns every president ial campaign. They do an interview in october. Donald trump then canceled and his reasons were full of false allegations about 60 Minutes. But Vice President harris did participate and here are some of the exchanges with interviewer bill whitaker. You want to expand the child tax credit. Yes, i do. You want to give Tax Breaks to firsttime homebuyers . Yes. And people starting small businesses . Correct. It is estimate pid the nonpartisan committee for responsible federal budget that your economic plan would add 3 Trillion to the federal deficit over the next decade. How are you going to pay for that . Okay. So the other economic Dr Economists that have reviewed my plan versus my opponent and determined that my economic plan would strengthen americas economy. His would weaken it. But bill, if you dont mind, my plan is about saying that when you invest in small businesses, you invest in the middle class and you strengthen americas economy. Small businesses are part of the backbone of americas economy. But pardon me, madam Vice President. The question was, how are you going to pay for it . One of the things i am going to make sure the richest among us who can afford it pay their fair share in taxes. It is not right that teachers and nurses and firefighters are paying a higher Tax Rate than billionaires and the biggest corporations. And i plan on making that fair. Let me tell you what your critics and the columnists say. The reason so many voters dont know you is that you have changed your position on so many things. You were against fracking. Now you are for it. You supported looser immigration policies. Now you are tightening them up. You are for medicare for all. Now youre not. So many of the people dont truly know what you believe or what you stand for and i know you have heard that. In the last four years, i have been Vice President of the united states and i have been traveling our country and i have been listening to folks and seeking what is possible in terms of common ground. I believe in building consensus. We are a diverse people. Geographically, regionally, where we are in our backgrounds, and what the american people do want is that we have leaders who can Build Consensus. Where we can figure out compromise and understand its not a bad thing as long as you dont compromise your values to find common sense solutions, and that has been my approach. You are sitting here with us. The Trump Campaign canceled an interview that they had agreed to, to participate in this broadcast. What do you make of that . If he is not going to give your viewers the ability to have a meaningful, thoughtful conversation, Question And Answer with you, then watch his rallies. You are going to hear conversations that are about himself and all of his personal grievances, and what you will not hear is anything about you, the listener. You will not hear about how he is going to try to bring the country together, find common ground, and, bill, that is why i believe in my Soul And Heart the american people are ready to turn the page. Vice president Kamala Harris on 60 Minutes Last Night. So, joe, barring the fact that the other choice from president believes in nothing except for his own selfinterest. Right. One is a democrat and donate today Kamala Harris campaigns at one point, with how do you think she handled that question . Now, i thought it was great. No. I am a conservative. Always said Donald Trumps not a conservative. He is not. And the News Outlets always running interference for him are not conservatives. Yesterday i quoted Edmund Burke. I quoted Russell Kirk. I quoted ronald reagan. And i go back to this answer, gene robinson, where she is talking about seeking consensus. She said, she talked about seeking common ground, and americans want leaders who Build Consensus and compromise, and, of course, that requires that, as cane said, i think it was, when the facts change, i change my mind. What do you do, sir, is the question. You were lucky, gene. You missed my history of conservatism 101 class yesterday. I did hear it. You also quoted my friend Charles Krauthammer at length. Yes, i heard it. The best. I love charles. I love charles. A real conservative hero, and charles, by the way, as i was reading through charles again through the weekend, and a man whose writing i so deeply love, the we discount the written word too much these days and think, gee, when we write, it doesnt matter so much. Charles is speaking to us and speaking to conservatives and speaking to trump voters and speaking to those who claim to be conservative. Charles is speaking from beyond to them in his words even today. If they just want to read what Charles Krauthammer i think the great conservative mind of our time has said about Donald Trump, more importantly, what he said about government. But one of the things that the Vice President just said that its almost lifted directly from the conservative mind. Russell kirk. The introduction to the seventh edition. Final edition of the conservative mind, Russell Kirk talked about what conservatism was. And he said, its conservatives look at custom and convention. Conventions forged by Compromise And Consensus over time and applied prudently. Then at The End, he said, whether we attach ourselves to the party of progress or the party of permanence depends upon the circumstances of the time, and thats what Kamala Harris just said there. Basically saying, yes, i said what i said in 2019. 2020, a lot of things happened. A lot of things changed. I have traveled the country. I am going to do what Russell Kirk said, the conservative mind. Seek consensus. Seek compromise. Be prudent over time. This is something that real conservatives would applaud, gene. But for some reason many who claim to be conservatives simply arent doing is that. They are going in the radical direction that Russell Kirk and Edmund Burke and real conservatives warped about. Right. The republican party right now is not a Conservative Party at all. And i thought that was a particularly effective answer that Vice President harris gave to the question of why she changed some of her positions. I think its by far the best answer she has given, and i predict she will give it over and over again because its a good answer, and its not just what a conservative conservative thinkers have said over the years and the centuries. Its what Bill Clinton did. Its what popular effective president s have always done, which is to understand whats possible and to do whats possible and not to try to do the impossible, and i just thought it was that was a really effective and powerful answer to a question that a lot of people who are kind of on the fence have been asking conservatives that i have been corresponding with particularly, well, she changed her position on this and that. You know, look at the way the positions have changed. They have changed towards the center and there is a reason for that and thats gene, let me ask you this. What do those conservatives say . What do they say about Donald Trumps position on abortion . He it changes every two minutes. He was prochoice his entire life. He decides to become prolife. He bags brags about terminating roe v. Wade. Then, wait, i am going to be a big champion of womens reproductive rights. Then he attacks desantis six week Abortion Ban and then flipflops again. How can you talk about somebody elses changing position when you have Donald Trump on an issue like abortion flipflopping every day . Right. When i bring that up, they say, well, Thats Trump being trump. Well, no. No. Thats crazy. Thats crazy is what it is. And dishonest and you Cant Trust a word that comes out of his mouth. And again this should be anathema to the republican party certainly of my youth, the republican party of most of my life. Simply would not tolerate this sort of person as an official, much less as President And President ial nominee. Yet, here we are. Maybe someday we will have the republican party again, and that would be a good thing, by the way, for the democratic party. Yes, it would. It would be good for progressives to have their ideas challenged by a serious republican party. But thats not happening now. Coming up, israel is expanding its Ground Offensive in Southern Lebanon. Tensions continue to rise across the Middle East. Morning joe will be right back. You called republicans weird. Thats become a Retaliatorying Cry for democrats. Why did that stuck . Being obsessed with peoples lives in their bed rums and reproductive rights, making up stories about legal folks legally here eating cats and dogs, they are dehumanizing. They go beyond weird. I said this. It becomes dangerous. Lets Debate Policy in a real way and try to find an objective truth again. You could say a lot of things about Donald Trump. What no one can say he is predictable. There is real value in having a commanderinchief in a dangerous time like this. Having someone our adversaries see as unpredictable, he may be willing to use the appropriate measure of force. That has a great effect and that happened. This isnt theory. Thats what Donald Trump achieved in his first term. House speaker yesterday yesterday. Joining us now former supreme allied commander of nato, james stavridis, analyst for msNbc News and author of the book the restless wave. Admiral, great to see you. Cant wait to talk about this book in a minute. May i ask you, sir, about unpredictability . Financial markets dont like unpredictable leaders. What about allies of the united states . They hate it. The saying in finance is money is a coward, meaning to flows away from unpredictability and danger. And its the same with alliances. And less predictable you are, the more likely you are that your allies start looking for other options. And potentially the greatest Comparative Advantage for the united states is this glittering network of allies, not only nato, but japan, australia, new zealand, south korea. Together we comprise 65 of the worlds gdp, willie. We dont want to scare them away. We want to be solid, steady and reliable. What are you hearing from leaders around the world, military leaders and diplomatic leaders about the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House . Just on that very question of alliances and predictability. Yeah, precisely the concern. And i will leave the domestic political calculus to experts on Morning Joe, but in my wheel house, cyber, alliances, warfare, all of that network there is deep concern about specifically that, the unpredictability. Lets remember north korea. One minute its little rocketman who is going to face fire and fury, and the next minute they are exchanging the most beautiful Love Letters in the world. You cant run a Foreign Policy like that. You cant maintain alliances and you cant be Ready For The World that is coming. One foreign capital that would like more predictability, kyiv, of course. In the Middle East, we heard from President Biden a couple times in recent days offering thoughts as to what israels response to iran should be. Hes warning against targeting irans nuclear facilities, later suggesting something, Energy And Oil production should perhaps be off limits. What do you think an appropriate response would be here and we should note there is no sense at all that prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will listen to President Biden. Your final comment is quite correct. I think there are three big target sets, jonathan. You mentioned the nuclear facilities. The problem there, its an incredibly hard target. They are deeply buried under granite. They are scattered around iran, which is three times the size of texas. Very hard, very hard target set. You mentioned energy. Problem there, iran produces 3, 5 of the Worlds Oil and gas and energy, and, therefore, you are going to kind of bend if not crack the global economy by knocking that out. I think option three is probably where they land, which is go after the military industrial complex. Thats where they are building the ballistic missiles that threaten israel. Go after those production facilities. Go after the storage. Go after the command and control. Throw in a few targeted, shall we say, eliminations on the side. Do some cyber. Put that package together. I think thats what you are going to see had the next few days. What about the nuclear facilities . We heard former Prime Minister of israel say we need to go after nuclear facilities. Some people here in the u. S. Suggested the same. Whats your view on that . I am respectable of the former Prime Minister. He is a serious thinker. You can lay out a case to go after the nuclear sites now. Personally, if i were advising the sfliz, i would say its not time. Go after the command and control. Go after the Air Defense systems, willie. Prepare ultimately if you have to go after the nuke facilities, but in this moment conduct a proportional strike and go after the Weapons Systems that targeted israel the ballistic missile sites. Your novel, you bring a lifetime of Knowledge And Experience to the story. Your 14th book. Your third novel. Yeah. I bet you never thought you would become a great novelist. Tell us about the theme of the great power of war. Yeah. Lets start with the quote from the most quotable person in history, winston churchill. He said, the further you want to look into the future, the more you must want to look to the past, meaning you could learn a lot from history. Idea of the book. Its a novel. Its readable. Its a Love Triangle set against the backdrop of the second World War in the pacific. Its about great fewer conflict in the pacific. You know, we dont have to imagine how terrible a war between the u. S. And china would be. Weve seen one between the u. S. And japan. And its a book about back to ukraine, jonathan, a book about new technology sweeping the battlefield in the early days of that war. Last thought. The Easter Egg inside the book is that its loosely based on dauntes inferno. Coming up, a look at the Vice President s media blitz. The Harris Campaign is out in full swing right now and we will get the strategy behind it when senior advisor adrian elrod joins the conversation. Morning joe is back in a moment. As Hurricane Milton strengthens in the gulf of mexico. The conservative policy agenda, project 2025, is calling for the breakup of the federal agency that issues severe storm warnings. The plan says the national atmospheric and oceanic administration, or noaa, which houses the national Weather Service, is a component of, quote, the climate Change Alarm Industry. And should be downsized. While disbanded. So think about that right now. In the wake of Hurricane Helenes biblical destruction, looking down the barrel of milton, theyre calling it the climate Change Alarm Industry in project 2025. Joining us, former Assistant Secretary of state for oceans and international environmental and scientific affairs monica medina. I would think this is a moment where perhaps it is important to point out that Donald Trump, although he says hes not connected with project 2025, but his top people put it together, looks at Climate Change and potentially following this plan would get rid of the very Warning System that we would need to prepare for a moment like this. Thats absolutely true, mika. Thank you so much for having me onto talk about this, because it couldnt be more important. The Trump Plan is as dangerous as these storms themselves, and we need to make sure that we understand that once that weather system, all that architecture that underlies all the private forecasts, all the local weather forecasts, all of that is underpinned by the national Weather Service. If we dismantle that, we lose this vital link to keeping ourselves safe. Not only our properties and businesses, but lives are at risk. I want to take a step backward and look at what the biden administration has done, is doing to prepare for severe weather like this, and if you could talk about femas rumor response page, which i think would be useful at a time like this. Thank you for pointing that out. Its unbelievable that in the midst of a storm when we should be pulling together as a nation, fema has to divert resources from actually responding to the storm to knock down all the disinformation that we see online and being broadcast through social media. Its terrible that anyone is having to knock down these lies, that we have to have pages like that put on federal response. Instead of where do you go to get help, its what to disavow, what not to believe. Its awful. Give us a sense, monica, i mean, right now we have the President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris working to support those who are devastated by Hurricane Helene, and theyre preparing now for milton, which looks to be catastrophic in the tampa and surrounding areas and possibly beyond. What would that look like if we jumped a year from now and President Trump, there was a President Trump in office . What it would look like is a much more difficult Disaster Response. Of course, President Trump has threatened to in the past withhold Disaster Assistance if places werent seen as having voted for him. So ive said in the past that these are dangerous proposals of his, because they are. Look at the devastation in these places. And if we didnt have the kind of robust Disaster Response that you see from President Biden and Vice President harris and what the Vice President promises to continue in her term if she were elected, we would have weeks and weeks of devastation. Its already bad enough when small businesses are shut down by a disastrous storm like this, 40 never rebuild. Vice President Harris is promising huge Tax Breaks for people who want to start businesses. That could be a lifeline for some of the people who are going to lose their business in these storms. Its really important for the federal government to have a robust, very wellfunded response what happen we see that the republicans, if elected, if Donald Trump is elected, hes going to pull this funding, and he will be using it to try and stave off what he claims to be a huge crisis at the border. This is our crisis today. This is the one that really matters. Yeah. You can see it laid out in project 2025. Monicas piece is extreme weather is not a hoax. We appreciate your coming on the show this morning, former Deputy Administrator of noaa, monica me dina. I hope everyone takes the warnings seriously and evacuates. Yes. Take care, monica. Thank you. Welcome to the fourth hour of Morning Joe. Its 6 00 a. M. On the west coast, 9 00 a. M. In the east. With Election Day exactly four weeks away four weeks Kamala Harris is taking her message to some of the most popular tv and Radio Shows in the country. That included a 60 Minutes Interview that aired Last Night in which she was pressed on some of the decisions made by the biden administration. Nbc news white House Correspondent Peter alexander has the latest. Reporter in the final months until Election Day, Kamala Harris looking to persuade undecided voters in a series of interviews. Last night on 60 Minutes the Vice President responding to criticism that she has changed her position on key issues from tracking to immigration. I have been listening to folks and seeking what is possible in terms of common ground. Reporter the Vice President was pressed whether she regretted the administrations initial border policy. From Day One literally we have been offering solutions. What i was asking is was it a mistake to kind of allow that flood to happen in the first place . I think the policies that we have been proposing are about fixing a problem, not promoting a problem, okay . But the numbers did quadruple under your watch. And the Numbers Today because of what we have done, we have cut the flow of illegal immigration by half. Reporter harris was also asked for more details on her recent revelation that she is a gun owner. I have a glock, and ive had it for quite some time. Look, my background is in law enforcement. And so there you go. Have you ever fired it . Yes, of course i have. [ laughter ] at a shooting range. Reporter former President Trump appearing on a previously taped Fox News interview asked by Laura Ingram whether hell use the Justice System to go after his political rivals. A lot of people say thats what should happen, to tell you the truth. But youre not going to do that. No. I want to make this the most successful country in the world. Reporter meanwhile as Hurricane Milton heads toward Florida Trump is once again slamming the biden administrations helene response. Almost 300 Billion to ukraine yet theyre offering 750 for the worst hurricane anybodys ever seen. Reporter that initial 750 is immediate relief while they assess a Persons Eligibility for more money. Harris seizing on trumps claim. Its extraordinarily irresponsible. So that was nbcs Peter Alexander reporting. Its very interesting. Just going back over this and Laura Ingram called him out several times on misrepresentations or lies. You just look this week and, again, so much is thrown at it it is so important that people look and take a tally just this week, right . Donald trump still lying about the 2020 election, still saying that it was stolen from him. He now has Jd Vance lying, saying it was stolen from him. You have u. S. Senators, Republican United states senators refusing to say that Donald Trump lost on sundays show. So theres the 2020 Election Lie that he continues this week. Theres also, of course, the lie about the hurricanes, saying that theyre doing a terrible job on the hurricanes when you have the republican governor of Georgia Brian Kemp saying theyre doing a really good job. You have the South Carolina governor mcmaster, conservative guy, saying, yes, theyre doing a good job, theyre staying in touch. Roy cooper on the show today. Roy cooper, a democrat. But you have tom tillis saying theyre working really well with the federal government. You have the governor of tennessee, a conservative guy, saying were coordinating very well. He even said this disinformation thats coming from the Trump Campaign also may be coming from our foreign enemies, who are trying to do what they did in past elections and sow distrust. You have that lie, and then you have the eating dogs and cats, that lie called out by the republican governor who was a twoterm republican senator up in ohio. Even when Donald Trump talked about why he wouldnt into 60 Minutes Last Night. Unbelievable. First of all, he was angry about the Fact Check. I love it when People Fact check me. If i have a fact wrong, i want to be Fact Checked. And he and Jd Vance very angry about getting Fact Checked, which tells you all you need to know about all the lies that theyre telling. Then he demanded an apology from Lesley Stahl from something that never happened four years ago. So you have that. And finally, i just think hes gotten to a point where he skipped the debates that Kamala Harris id do on Fox News. Happy to do it. He skipped the 60 Minutes Interview. It just has to leave you what is going on here . He needs to get out of that bubble. Why he is not out of the bubble . And i just think in his gut he knows he may not be up to it anymore. Yeah. Thats my best guest. Especially side by side with her. I think hes uncomfortable on a number of levels. Im not going to get mean about it. Younger than him. Yeah. Thats the best guess. We dont know. Presidential candidates have appeared before the press since 1968. Here is the explanation Scott Pelley gave Last Night about why Donald Trump dropped out of the appearance. Its been a tradition for more than half a century that the major party candidates for president Sit Down with 60 Minutes in october. In 1968, it was Richard Nixon and hubert humphrey. This year Vice President Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump accepted our invitation, but unfortunately, last Week Trump cancelled. He had previously declined another debate with harris. So tonight may have been the largest audience for the candidates between now and Election Day. All right. Claire mccaskill, im going to let you take this one. What do you make of the, first of all, the way Scott Pelley had to explain what happened between the campaign and 60 Minutes and trump being a noshow on 60 Minutes . Lets set aside whether you think trump is a worthless liar and a jerk and not a redeemable human being. Put that over to the side. And lets be honest about the Donald Trump of today versus the Donald Trump of 2016 and the decline that has occurred. Does anyone believe that Donald Trump in 2016 would be turning down debates and turning down appearances on 60 Minutes . No, he wouldnt. He has lost confidence in his own ability. Clearly this guy, i mean, you can call it cowardice. It is. It all comes down to his insecurity that he is no longer capable of being judged side by side with Kamala Harris. He doesnt want that comparison. He knows he is not doing well when they are side by side. And he also knows that hes having difficulty always staying on topic and his wanderings and all of the cognitive problems youre seeing with Donald Trump, he knows it. He may not be admitting it even to himself, but thats why theyre Coming Up with all these bogus excuses why he wont debate, why he wont go on 60 Minutes, why he only goes to places he knows will protect them for himself. Trump hasnt sat for any interview in months upon months. Certainly Kamala Harris got the best of him in their debate. Hes taking it to socials this morning, criticizing her appearance on 60 Minutes. Its not just about him being afraid of that contrast with harris. He clearly is. But it is, just from a political point of view, a missed opportunity. There are only four weeks to go. We know hes campaigning in only friendly confines, both in interviews and rallies. There is still a slim sliver of undecided voters who are going to matter in this election. The only way to reach him are moments like this, set pieces. He skipped this, he skipped the interview Last Night. These are raw politics, votes, and he missed the opportunity to court them. Youre talking rationally about what a candidate would do to seek those voters, to focus on them. Were not talking about a rational human being in Donald Trump. Were talking about a guy who sees people who need help and he views it as how can i help me . I want to help myself through their suffering. He wakes up every day like a missile seeking to do damage. Hes done damage in springfield, ohio. Hes doing damage down south during the hurricane, specifically for North Carolina. And thats who he is. And to claires point about he certainly has. You can see that and hear that. Your ear can hear that in his ramblings. But i think the thing that has frightened him and further damaged him is the specter of being on stage and contrasted every single day against a woman, a black woman. Much younger. A young, attractive black woman. I think that drives him even crazier than he already is. Of course, he can say what he wants about her and he has talking about how shes mentally, what, incapacitated from Birth Or Something like that . And yet in 2014 he contributed to her campaign, said some nice things about her. I do think its a contrast. I will say and i dont even think its quite as much about her being black, her being a woman. I think its age disparity. This entire campaign for two years has been built around Donald Trump being the younger of the two candidates. He make 78, but Joe Biden was 80, 81, had slowed down significantly. And that was the contrast he liked. Yeah. And in politics so much of it is just like this, right . So im watching the Football Game Right after Kamala Harris gets into the race, and they show a split screen. I went like this. Kamala harris 59, Donald Trump 78. You could really see the difference there. I absolutely agree with you. I think he doesnt want the split screen. I think thats why hes afraid to be seen in a debate on Fox News or an interview on 60 Minutes ill add to that. I definitely think Thats Part of it, because hes all about the look and the feel of it all and the brand. But i also think, just having known him over the years, us both, that he is still trying to get over the trauma of standing on a Debate Stage with her and having her name military leaders, economic experts and literally turning to him and saying they say you are a disgrace, right to his face. Right. I think thats just you know, hearing that truth about not just his policies but the way hes behaved over the years in front of millions of people, hearing the truth is impocket impossible for him. He cant do it again. Again, you know, Jonathan Lemire, youve followed Donald Trump for a very long time. I will go back for those who havent heard it 28 times, go back to say if you read what dr. Brzezinski said about the soviet union, he said they cant beat the united States Head on. The united states is superior economically, superior militarily, superior politically, superior culturally, in every way. So the old soviet union, they had to be disrupters. They had to play by different rules. They couldnt beat us head on, so they had to disrupt. And we see that describes exactly what Vladimir Putin is doing. And domestically, Donald Trump has always been a disrupter. In 2016, every one of them looked foolish. They didnt know how to respond to the disrupter. Joe biden, a creature of washington since 29, a creature of washington who played by the rules, always thrown off, always anguished by this disrupter who didnt play by the rules. Donald trump is now the victim of disruption, of political disruption. They changed the candidate on him. He thinks they changed the rules on him. He played for this. And his feet are still in cement. Hes never figured out how to get those feet out of the cement, because it was the democrats this time who were the disrupters against Donald Trump, First Time thats ever happened to him in politics, in business, in media, in tabloid wars, you name it. Yeah. Trump is a disrupter, but also a creature of habit, a creature of routine, usually the one in charge calling all the shots. And to your point, the rug was pulled out from underneath his feet. He says it publicly and im told privately on a daily basis still complains about the ticket switch, still complains that hes now running against harris and not biden, believes its unfair, believes its rigged. Its part of his complaint to challenge thE Election were he to lose. Republican efforts to challenge the vote after its cast, that still is the one card the republicans still have to play to disrupt this election. I know their legal teams are staffing up in preparation for just that. Lets bring in right now senior Spokesperson And Advisor for the Harris Campaign adrienne elrod. Donald trump says this has been the worst Hurricane Response ever. He keeps saying it. Whats your response . Whats the Campaigns Response . Well, our response, joe, is its highly irresponsible. Youve heard it from Republican And Democratic Governors and elected officials in some of these states too that are working hand in hand with their constituents to make sure they are getting the rescue efforts in place that they need. Its just irresponsible. Joe, ive been listening to you and lemire and mika talk for the past few minutes about all the chaos that always comes with Donald Trump, with everything he does. Were talking about a campaign right now. Think about what a trump 2. 0 would look like if he was back in that White House. Not only would we know project 2025 would be highly dangerous and strip away freedoms that americans enjoy right now. It would give him unprecedented powers. This kind of chaos with a natural disaster where its very common for republicans and democrats to put their political ideologies aside and focus on helping the american people. That is something Donald Trump is trying to distort. He is desperate. You guys have been describing him very well. I think hes not quite sure what to do in this moment, so he tends to lash out. It is irresponsible. He is spreading disinformation. The Vice President has shown such strong leadership on this issue, meeting with fema leaders and making sure these states have what they need from the biden administration. Its just irresponsible. This is what americans would face if Donald Trump gets back in that White House for another four years. Donald trump has continued to say that Joe Biden did not win the 2020 election. Jd vance has echoed those lies again this week. Were not going back two years, were not going back four years. Were talking about what Donald Trump is saying this week, and he continues to say that Joe Biden didnt win the 2020 election. Republican senators wont even say Donald Trump lost the 2020 election on sunday shows. Whats the Campaigns Response . Well, you know, joe, we put this out on the campaign during the debate, the Walz Vance Debate last week. But our dials, which is a way to test what undecided voters are thinking at that very moment during a debate, our dials showed that the most damning moment for Jd Vance in that debate was when he tried to move away from thE Election, when he denied the fact that Joe Biden won thE Election in 2020. And Tim Walz, of course, called him out on that. That was our most effective moment in the debate in terms of drawing a contrast. That is something that is very top of mind to voters, making sure we dont live under an authoritarian regime if Donald Trump becomes president again. I think our response speaks for itself. It is something that certainly turned off those independent swing voters who are trying to decide who they want to vote for in this election. We want to make sure they understand the stakes of this election, that they understand the giant contrast between the fact that Vice President Harris And Governor Walz Support a democracy. We want to expand freedoms for americans, versus Jd Vance, who clearly does not think Joe Biden won thE Election, and he does not support the Way Democracy works in this country. Donald trump said yesterday, quote, we have a lot of bad genes in our country right now, while talking about immigrants and also while misrepresenting a statistic about murderers that he somehow somehow overlooked the fact that some immigrants actually committed murder while Donald Trump was president for four years. He overlooked that. But he went back to something again causing grave concerns, especially among people who are students of history, students of the holocaust, in talking about genes, our Gene Pool. We have a lot of bad genes in our country right now. Whats the Campaigns Response to that . You know, again, highly irresponsible here, joe. This is a dog whistle. If theres a definition of a dog whistle, thats exactly what this is. This is what Donald Trump does. When he has nothing to run on you know, he said during the debate with Vice President harris he has concepts of plans. He doesnt have concepts of plans. He has the project 2025 agenda, which would strip away the freedoms of the american people. These are just desperate attempts, same old tired Playbook Weve seen time and time again from Donald Trump. When you contrast that with what Vice President harris is doing every single day, going out, talking to voters, talking about how shes going to lower costs for american families, how shes going to expand reproductive freedoms, how shes going to make life better for the american people. That is what she thinks about every single day when she wakes up. Donald trump thinks about how hes going to get political retribution on his enemies. You could not have a stronger contrast between these two candidates at this stage of the campaign. Adrienne elrod, Thank You very much. We want to get to the hurricane, but first, mike barnicle, we had somebody talking about genes that, that, that immigrants have bad genes and attaches it to murder, which of course he lies about the statistics. But this is also the same guy as i know what antiantitrumpers do and the trump apologies do. Oh no, hes talking about murder he tied it all up in a neat bow of disinformation where he attaches genes to immigrants. And this follows up from a man who has said that immigrants are poisoning the blood of our nation. I, i, i, i just i american migrants are eating cats and dogs. Leaders dont talk like that. In our lifetime, america leaders dont talk like that. And yet, Donald Trump continues playing this card. Joe, wed be here for a month continuously every day all day long if we tried to talk about the damage that Donald Trump has already done to this country. And the problem with Donald Trump is that each day he takes The Field, each day and every hour of each day that he takes The Field to campaign for president or just to show up and talk about whatever hes going to talk about in his weave of rhetoric, he does damage. Some of it, i fear, is irreparable. Some of the damage hes done, the lack of faith in government, the lack of confidence in government that hes doing in North Carolina right now talking about no help and theyre only giving people 750 when they bailed out ukraine. Damage like that is lasting in some people. Its lasting. The only way to begin defeating the damage is to defeat Donald Trump in november. Well, and the way to address this is youve got to talk about it. And it is you talked before, mike, about it being exhausting talking about this every day, but you cant let it go by. No. I think thats whats happened. I have some friends in the media who want to pretend this is any other race, who want to pretend that those that talk about all of these things somehow are biased or somehow are, you know, just hate Donald Trump. I agree with john kasich. I dont hate Donald Trump. I do love america. I do love this country. Like ronald reagan, i do believe that immigrants have kept this country young for 240 years. And i want them to come here legally. And we have legal immigrants right now up in ohio, and Donald Trump and Jd Vance are lying about it. Its hateful what they have done. This is the game they play. Again, we need to talk about this, right . What they do is, Jd Vance, when hes told pointblank youre lying, he says, well, im hearing about this, though, people are talking, constituents are talking. Well, theyre talking about it because of the lies theyre spreading in trump circles from you. Just like i think it was on brian stelters show this weekend. You showed me a clip of a republican congressman. Brian stelter points out, youre lying. And this republican congressman said, well, thats what people are saying. Well, yeah, theyre saying it because youre spreading the lie. And so times may be tiresome, but people have to hold them to account and keep count of the lies. We cant grow numb to this. Unfortunately many of my friends in the media have become numb to this. Lets just pretend this is dole and clinton. Lets say Donald Trump is talking about the Gene Pool of immigrants who commit murder. Kamala harris, her third answer on 60 Minutes thats what we talked about this before. Thats how they try to flatten it out. Donald trump is lying about immigrants and making their lives less safe and making lives less safe in springfield, ohio, by spreading vile lies about immigrants. And people go, but did you see her interview with that local reporter in philadelphia . She talked about her middle Class Background for two minutes before she started talking about policy. Im telling you not 50 years from now, not 30 years from now, ten years from now people will look back on these columns, they will look back on the apologists for Donald Trump. They will look back on this moment, and they will ask what madness consumed those people trying to create a Permission Structure to vote for a man who is lying every day and has absolutely no problems lying. That is the strategy, by the way way. That is The Point. Were going to continue this conversation as much as possible. We also want to talk about the evacuation orders in effect right now in florida after the storm has developed into a major category 4 storm. How are residents there preparing . Theyre still in the middle of cleaning up from helene. Yeah. Thats right, mika. Its adding an extra Curve Ball to this storm. This home in sarasota, the Water Level around my waist height. That means theres all kinds of stuff that needs to be removed. We have furniture, food, all kinds of memories that are now piles of trash. This is a home, the owner tells me, where theyve already had multiple truckloads of stuff taken away and this is still what is left behind. The governor says they are in a scramble now to get as much squared away as possible. All of this can become projectiles. The Storm Surge can be twice as high in sarasota when milton roars onto shore, becoming a potential battering ram. Some of the officials weve spoken with say their top concern is getting people to heed the evacuation warnings, stressing that they have shelter space. You cannot put up a good fight on your own against Storm Surge. It comes in fast. It comes in high. That is the thing that we are unfortunately thinking ahead on as we often do. Weve seen highways get jampacked with traffic. Water has been flying off store shelves. Our team has had trublg finding gas cans in the area, so people stocking up on fuel as well. This is the second major hurricane on floridas Gulf Coast in less than two weeks. This area is getting very hard hit this fall, guys. Jesse kirsch, Thank You so much. The Price Tag from Hurricane Helene has already surpassed 50 billion. Lets bring in andrew ross sorkin. Andrew, ive told this story before. It bears repeating again. Im out golfing five, six, seven years ago with a republican. Maybe it was eight or nine. I was a republican too. The guy never voted for a democrat before. And he worked for an insurance company. He was one of the leaders of an insurance company. I asked him about Climate Change. Wed had a big debate about Climate Change. And this very conservative capitalist, Profree Market Republican laughed. He goes, Climate Change . Of course theres Climate Change. He said i can show you our payouts for Property Damage from catastrophic Weather Events and theyre going like this, joe. Theyre skyrocketing. He goes, yes, this is the dumbest question to ever ask, joe. I doubt this guy ever voted for a democrat. And if you take from when i had that conversation with him, seven, eight, nine years ago to a decade later, its gotten so much worse, which is why a lot of florida residents may wake up next year and find out they cant get Property Insurance there because there are just too many storms. Right. That is the big issue. Look, theres going to be unfortunately and we have to pray and hope theres not an enormous human toll, but the economic toll, the estimates are already starting to come in. Hurricane ian was a 56 Billion event in terms of losses. You look at all the big insurance companies, allstate, chubb, aig. They have huge exposure to florida. So there are real questions about what those losses are ultimately going to look like depending on how hard hit this is. What happens in the aftermath of losses of that kind of magnitude . Well, they start restricting the kind of insurance theyre providing. They tighten up the language. They charge more if they even offer the insurance at all. And so i think these are going to be some very large issues were going to have to look at and potentially grapple with. Im crossing my fingers hoping they wont be. But its going to be, depending on how hard hit this is, a real conversation about the economic peril of whats taking place in florida and the insurance issues. Its in addition to the human issue. That will be a big story. Time now for one more story. Tell us about Roblox And Report about it. This is remarkable. For those folks and maybe youre a parent, including myself, who has kids who go on roblox, one of the most popular online gaming sites, often times considered a safe place for kids to be where they can make games and create games and do all sorts of things. At least thats been the reputation. This morning a short seller so thats a Hedge Fund that is betting against the stock. They do want the stock to go down. I want everybody to understand the context. They pit out a report saying two things that are interesting. One is that the numbers, theyre claiming effectively, are fraudulent. Theyre arguing that the number of users on the site are not real. Some are coming from places like Vietnam And Server farms and the like. I think more disturbing is the number of areas on the site where they found that children were being approached by pedophiles. It is just unbelievable. They say they registered as a child on the service and were able to access games like, quote, escape to epstein island, and diddy party and run from Diddy And Diddy simulator. There was a group called beat up the pregnant. Another group called Palestine And Israel hang out which allowed kids of all ages to purchase bombs and knives and attack each other digitally. This is horrific stuff. Its going to raise, frankly, the question from lawmakers about what happened on this platform. The stock down about 8 on the news this morning. As i said, its not just about the total numbers. I think its about whats happening on these platforms. I know i have a 7yearold who plays on this platform, plays princess games, at least i think, but im now going to be looking at this in a whole new light. A new report from a nonpartisan political organization is shedding light on some of the causes of todays worsening political polarization. According to unite america, only 7 of voters across the country will be responsible for electing 87 of house members this cycle. In total, there are 380 house races considered safe for either party in those districts primaries. However, there were only 18 Million votes cast out of 260 Million votingage adults. Joining us now, nick troiano. How did we get here . I told you about a country where were a month out from thE Election. The majority of seats have been decided before voters even cast a ballot. You wouldnt think im talking about the united states of america, but here we are. How we got here is because of the structure of our political system. Most of the seats in the legislature are safe for one party or the other, which means low turnout in party primaries decide this. When voters are frustrated and they look at congress and say why arent they representing a majority of us when 60, 70, 80 can agree on solutions to debt and climate, this is the problem. The good news is that its fixable. So we got so much we could do here. I could go on too long about this, because i really think safe seats are a huge part of our problem. Because theres no political value in coming to the middle when youre in a safe seat. Thats what people dont realize. When youre from a state where either a Republican Or Democrat can get elected, theres great value in finding common ground. I want you to talk about the new primary Election Process that might help, which is whats happened in a number of states where you dont run on a partisan basis in the primary. Just everybodys in one primary. Thats part of it. The other big part of it is gerrymandering in the house. Allowing congresspeople to draw their own seat is a huge part of the problem. They just want safe. They dont want ever to have to worry about anything other than a primary. Right. The solution to this problem in our view is to abolish party primaries. Were avocaing for what alaska did in 2022 for the First Time is abolish party primaries. It shows that it incentivies candidates to represent a true majority of voters. Thats what democracy really should be about. We also notice that in alaska when Sarah Palin was running against democrats, who had worked together in alaska before, they were polite to each other because it was this sort of approach. But using a sort of Scorchedearth Tactic didnt work. And people are going, oh, this is some left wing lib idea. I just want to say that two people who would be big advocates for this right now well, they may not publicly, but it would have made former Speaker Newt gingrichs live a lot easier. Hearing him talk about what Mike Johnson is going through, as gingrich said last week, its the people that get reelected with 85 of the vote that are setting the house on fire politically, that are saying, no, were not going to support anything, were going to say the most outrageous things in the world, were going to say the government creates hurricanes, were going to talk about jewish space lasers, because were never going to lose in our districts and well raise millions of dollars from crack pots across the united states. This isnt even a partisan issue. This is something leaders in both parties would like. Absolutely. For 40 of congress, not only dont they have an opponent in the primary election, were not going to expect any results from congress. We can fix this. There are six states with initiatives on the ballot this november for open primaries. There are red states, blue states and purple states, states like idaho where volunteers gathered over 100 signatures to get this on the ballot. The people support it. We want a vote that truly matters. Nick troiano, Thank You so much for coming on the show this morning. And now for something completely different. Camelot, camelot, camelot. Its only a model. I bid you welcome to your new home. Let us ride to camelot Actor And Grammyawardwinning Singer Songwriter Eric Idle joins us with the inside story of what it took to bring Monty Python and the holy grail to broadway. That is next on Morning Joe. Always look on the bright side of life always look on the bright side of life here we go now always look on the bright side of life always look always look that is a look at the cast of spamalot on the Today Show performing the Monty Python classic always look on the bright side of life. It brought rave reviews following its nearly 15year break from broadway. Now, the behind the Scenes Story of how the show first came to be is being told in the new book entitled the spamalot diaries. Joining us now, the books New York times bestselling author Eric Idle, he also wrote and created the musical and is, of course, a Founding Member of Monty Python. It is an honor to have you on the show. And Id Love to start by asking you about the bag you brought with you. Oh, i brought the holy grail with me. Because i thought, you know, i found it, under my bed, and inside it is my daughter made it, it is just spam. It is very nice. It is the only one in the world. So, anyway, she made it for me for the opening on broadway last year. I brought it for luck. Couture. Very nice. There are so many questions i could ask you, were all such huge fans, but ive always loved you talking about your relationship with george harrison. You do it in the diaries, and what a wonderful lovely man he was, and how supportive he was of you, and how you initially were afraid, you know, afraid to meet him, but after meeting him you talked for 24 hours straight. It was a wonderful thing. We met in l. A. , a screening of the holy grail, actually, and we just we just talked and talked. It was funny. How is your group . And i say how is your group, and how is your john and i say how is your john, and it was fun. But we all played guitar, it was good fun. Im a guitarist. Some notes. Lets talk about the book. The spamalot diaries, tell us what they are and when you found them. Diaries i kept during the rehearsal with Mike Nichols and all the lovely people, you know, the cast and everything. And i found them two years ago when i was moving house. And we were moving to a smaller house, i call it downsize abbey, it is what happens at my age, you know. And i found these diaries. I forgot my captain and i shared them to my wife and she thought they were fantastic, read them and enjoyed them. They tell the story before you know you got a hit. So every day you got anxiety and fears, and arguments, and, you know, show just doesnt just come together, it is a lot of creative forces thrashing and maybe arguing. Speaking of creative forces flashing together eric, a lot of people think of Mike Nichols and elaine may and think what a great team they were, but Mike Nichols became huge in terms of production, direction, Screen Writing and making great films and other elements of theater. What was your relationship with him . I was a friend with him for 15 years and we got together to work on spamalot and we had a blazing row. I thought it was important to know that you can are rows with people and keep working together. Life is not all smooth. I loved him and adored him and it is a Love Letter to Mike Nichols. It shows our email exchanges and just how to put a show into a film, which is one thing, into a twoact play musical. He was the best person i ever worked with, one of the cleverest and most brilliant men i ever met. Im so glad i got a chance to see spamalot on broadway in its last iteration. You know humor, eric. Youve been doing humor your whole life. You know it is an essence for us as human beings. Is the Advice Y give someone who is trying to bring humor to broadway, thats tough to get humor into a broadway production. What is the best piece of Advice You would give them . Our job was if we could make ourselves laugh, that was in the show. If we didnt, we sold it to the two ronnies. So, you know, i think if you dont laugh, why would they laugh . That was Mike Nichols advice. It is quite a serious business trying to make people laugh, but it is a fun one. Well, it is a serious business, it is a fun one and nobodys better at it than you are. And i youre Welcome Back anytime. I could talk to you for three hours about the whatles. Mika heres about it every day. Final thoughts. My pleasure. Bring the guitar next time. Okay. Definitely will. The new book the spamalot diaries is on sale now. Eric idle, Thank You so much for being on this morning. We appreciate it. All right, that does it for us this morning. Well see you tomorrow. 6 00 a.
