For the folks who are local, i also know what this means for each of you as a leader, to be a leader at a time your own homes, your families, your friends and people you know and your community has been directly hit. For the folks that work in your various divisions and offices, i know they have been showing up at a moment of need for others. Even when their own families and their own homes have been directly impacted. I think that these moments of crisis bring out some of the best of who we can be and who we are. I have been seeing and hearing the stories from here in North Carolina about strangers who are helping each other out. Giving People Assistance in every way that they need, including shelter, Food And Friendship. And also fellowship. I thank everyone for all the work that they have been doing. Those who are in the room and those who are out there right now working around the clock. I am also here because i wanted to make an announcement that yesterday we added Mecklenburg County to the major Disaster Declaration. That means that we are going to be getting substantial resources into help folks. In particular, to help them be able to apply for federal Assistance Worker a range of things that will be including home repair, in terms of what folks need in generators or compensation for generators they have had to buy. The kind of Shelter Theyve had to seek including hotels and the federal assistance for these issues is, i know, extremely important. A lot of folks do not say for these kinds of emergencies. When they hit, it takes a real drain on their resources and ability to take care of themselves and their family. I thank everybody here but im looking forward to our briefing. I will say that, also, we are looking forward to working with our congressional partners. She is being debriefed by local and state officials as to the Disaster Recovery efforts that have been taking place in that really hardhit state of North Carolina. The Debrief Starting with Governor Roy Cooper thanking her for being there. She just announced new news which includes Mecklenburg County being added to the major Disaster Declaration, explaining that means that federal assistance will not be made available for those who have been hardest hit and Mecklenburg County and other locations in North Carolina. They can apply for federal assistance. Not only is Kamala Harris getting the information she needs to relay it to other federal officials but she also talked about the fact that there is collaborative efforts between the federal, state and local officials to be able to tackle what has happened there. We do actually have Antonia Hylton. She is in one of the hardest Hit Areas of North Carolina but antonia is located in asheville. I know most of you have been following you been seeing and hearing out of their. We just heard the beginning of the briefing that Kamala Harris is getting. I want to know from you. What are folks think on the ground where you are about how those Cleanup And Recovery efforts are going . Reporter i can tell you a lot of people will be trying to watch what the Vice President says today closely. It will be challenging because so many still do not have access to the internet, Cell Service is spotty. People do not have Running Water. Which has just put pressure on every part of their lives. It means they cannot cook Food Or Cleaner clothing. It also means that they cannot clean out all of the buildings and businesses and parts of their lies that have experienced this intense devastation. Theyre being told, in many cases, that it may be weeks before Running Water is back on. It has caused some communication issues where some residents are getting connected to support and to care and your resources. Let fear about lack of connectivity means that they are hearing iss theories and they are starting to believe the federal government is not coming to their aid. Some people i spoke with today believe that fema is capping the amount of money theyre going to share with them. Which is not true. Fema is on the ground trying to help people apply for all kinds of assistance. They have Conspiracy Theories about the Biden Harris Administration trying to divert funds to migrants. That is not true. Those are completely different programs and budgets. It has caused him pain. Take a listen to some of the conversations i have had today. It is devastating. Marshall is gone. Whole communities just washed away. National response is not near what i think it has been. The power is a major thing. I do what they can do to get more power in here. A lot of people do not have power. The major issue is getting here. We are pretty much isolated. Service has been very, very poor. It may need more people out. There is going to be people at this place for people to come talk to. I still do not have any internet at home. I have learned that some peoples is coming back but i do not have anything. Reporter so many people in this community are just looking to feel like they have Support And Love from other people in the country. I had a Conversation Yesterday with an artist a little ways down the road where i am right now, who was walking into a gallery trying to save his Lifes Work and recover what he could and that what he was going to do now you know source of income. The message that he shared with me is do not forget about us when the story starts to fade. It ends. Please come back and check on us. I think that is what is most important now that we are more than a week out from when Hurricane Helene made and paul. People are still in such desperate need. I want to follow up with you. You are there in asheville. It is one of the hardest Hit Areas of North Carolina. We know that fema is there. We know that we have a federal boots on the Ground Right now that are working collaboratively with state and local officials to get help to those people. It is tragic what has happened to them. Reporter nightmare is a good word for it. First, i will share some facts because theyre so much disinformation and misinformation. Right now, just in this county alone, there are three different locations that fema has a full set up to help people who cannot make Phone Calls or do over the internet get their applications done. Announced that justin this county alone, 14,000 applications have been approved. 12 Million have already been approved. That is just the beginning and just this county. You can extrapolate from there about how much is happening in other corners of the country affected by all of this. At the same time, because of some of the geographical realities of what it means to try to travel through mountains in a very remote and rural areas. Take helicopters over very thick Trees Force and brush and try to spot people who may need Search And Rescue. Try to see homes that have been cut off because of roads and bridges and land in support those people. I got to see up close. I got to go on a black Hawk Helicopter with the national guard and see them try to make these decisions and do recon of the lay of the land. How do we help people . I think two things can be true at once. Fema is here. There is a lot of aid. They are trying to get it to people and it feels like it is going really slowly. People do have a right to be heard about that. They are struggling to find food. Our crew has had to help people get water to inform them about places where they can go to the families. That tells you about the kind of anger people feel when people cannot communicate, that just creates the perfect opening for, you know, things that are not so true or grounded in reality to sometimes take hold. You have to have a lot of empathy because people are trying their best in very difficult circumstances. I have to tell you, antonia, i know it is not easy to be there.
