word with lawrence o'donnell. >> president biden is heading to a fund raising event. making appearance at the home of new jersey governor phil murphy. now this veis not just an attempted lesson to appease anxiety. it is necessary. how did trump manage to out- raise biden? raise biden? one successful and cynical strategy has been raising money off all of his legal troubles ro including his 34 felony convictions. a trump fund raising email this week claims quote they torturedh me in fulton county jail and took my mug shot. do you need a hug? i think ■çhe does. i love you. and they want to sentence me to death but there might be more cynical fund raising. presidency pf his to the highest bidder. the washington post reported donald trump solicited one billion dollars to the top oil executives. his promise, giving these oil executives the opportunity to shape his environmental agenda n including rolling back biden administration achievements andn clean energy in electric vehicles. and now, trump echas gone full crypto, bro, after calling , crypto currency a scam and calling the u.s. dollar the only one real currency. after meeting with trump in maru a-lago this month, one bit coint executive told cnbc that his industry has committed to raising ■çover $100 million and turning out more than 5 million voter to help him win. the new york times reported this week on what they call the pro israel donor with the plan to elect trump. they have amassed $27 million in ■çthe aftermath of the campaign. that is compared to the trump campaign which announced they raised $8 million on the day of the campaign. now, as we wait to see how the campaign has gotten a post debate financial bump? one thing is for sure, trump's willingness to put his p presidency on sale. it is not a democracy. but a cleptocracy. joining me now, a special correspondent at vanity fair. hayes brown. and desmond oyoya. at ional politics reporter the new york times. you came from the ■çhamptons where you were witnessing what o biden is doing to make sure the donors feel that he is the candidate for them. >> i have been one of a few reporters following him since yesterday. and they have really tried to project confidence that he is id the one who is going to protectt democracy, civil rights. that they are trying to underscore the stakes of the ils election and you are really seeing the president strike this. he has been down before. at this pride event at the manhattan center i had this flash back to 2020 when i was covering him on the new hampshire, during the 2020 presidential debate. and you know there was this ■ç moment when he was rereally dow in the polls. he was about to come in this devastating 5th place finish in the new hampshire democratic primary. but he shpositioned all of thes reporters around him in these drab offices in new hampshire and basically told us don't count me out. we are hearing from media strategists at the time. saying it is over. it's the end of the lineated li wasn't. many of us in the room were proven wrong later within he n went onto win the primary. so i think that is the same t kind of position he is trying to take now. whether it works after so long, after this move. every single voter i spoke with yesterday was echoing the same message of dread and anxietk. so it is just a very different landscape for him now. >> so one of the things that strikes me, the same establishment was striking him l out. >> i lost s wrote a piece afte he lost and said he should dropu out. and i rue the day i wrote that piece but everyone said he is going to drop out. he lost these two primaries. the math doesn't math. and i was totally wrong. we have seen again anything can happen. you know, we should preface this with we don't know. but joe biden has moments like a this where you think all is lost, he ■çis never going to be able to pull it out. and that tends to be when he is at the best. there are different circumstances and the cnn debate had no sound. we can talk teabout that foreve and ever. but this is a man who enjoys being counted out. >> talk to me about this. it get to a point when you are talking billions. >> what is interesting is that even though biden had this de terrible night, it was a as terrible night for him. >> he ibsaid it was a terrible night. >> i think that it is interesting that based off of that ■çperformance, money poure in for biden. people opened the wall and said okay, we know you weren't at your best, but looking at you next for the other guy, we still think you have to be the person to move forward. and trump hads to be defeated. the fact that the trump campaign is, they raised $8 is million which is a good amount post debate for someone who spent the entire time lying andn not answering questions. it will be interesting to see how much of that increase, whether it stays flat moving forward. with the fec filings, whether we can pinpoint if there is a sort of bump at all. and if there is, they will have to hold onto that bump for a very long time. there are months until the next debate. we have all summer for things and where donors can make the decision about whether they want to open their wallets now. want to hold onto see what happens with biden. and i think that could come into play down the line. thankfully, the biden campaign has a lot of money in the bank right now. they are catching up in terms of total fund raising but in terms of spending on what matters, the biden campaign is still ahead. >> one indication of where the donor class is, is oftentimes how many of the high net worth donors are writing checks. but i always find that a great indicater of where the voter is, is the small dollar donor. the one that spends that one dollar. all of a sudden feeling invested. so one udof the things i'm looking for is are we going to see a difference by the number of donors that are writing? so when you were in the hamptons talking to the ki different high net worth donors, what were you saying, not about his candidacy, but whether or not were they going to write that check? >> well, so actually my colleagues have been doing some great work looking at behind ki the scenes. you know the panic that has been taking place behind the scenes and it has taken a while for people to come around again on biden but i think today you are beginning to see a little bit more of the coalescing around him again. you know. lizanne ronstein today said we have to compare, it is important to compare meaningful. we should compare the meaningful presidencies over one debate night. and i think you will be hearing that chorus a little bit more. whether that translates down to the small dollar donor, i'm not sure yet. i will say this, too. some of the donors i was speaking with yesterday. some of them didn't watch the debate because they knew it was going to be a painful experience. they turned on their tv or started scrolling the next morning. and were just devastated to find out they feared had come to fruition. >> we keep talking about what biden didn't do. and you take a step back. but who did trump win over? >> i don't think he won over h donors. a lot of this anxiety is can we use this guy to beat trump. so the question is can this guy beat trump, not is this guy the guy of my dreams. because he has never been the guy of some of these donors dreams because democrats have crazy dreams, let's be honest. they want the perfect candidate but nobody can agree on the perfect candidate. so there is a real feeling people want to get rid of trump. they know he can win because he won in 2016. people are not over 2016 on some level. and so, you know i was talking. >> people are still recovering. literally watching the debate if anything, for me, it was anxiety again. do you want that anxiety, because every other word was y being absolutely cruel and mean and it was all a dark day in america. but how do you contrast that with the editorials coming out of the new york times? how do you respond to that when they are saying step down? >> if you are the biden campaign, you continue to say look, we appreciate your input. however, we are going to continue to run this campaign as best as we can to try and defeat donald trump. because we are as of this moment still the nominee for the presidency. we are still supporting the president of the united states. and his reelection. whether that calms down voters who are a bit shaken by the performance. >> are voters shaken? >> i mean. >> i think to your point, we didn't expect him to be the superstar. so i turned it off. i spoke to plenty of people who said the same thing. democracy is on the line. >> there was actually one business executive who i asked him, can you ask him about the debate, and he gave me this deep exhale. and he took a moment before he went onto say took a mentoring o position because there are some things i just can't do anymore. but he said the stakes are just too high. >> so do they understand then the trump voters, they are okay with authoritarianism. do those folks understand he is a vessel for democracy? >> yes. i think they do. the calculus is can democrats beat trump? do we want to use this guy to beat trump. people furious at editorial boards. right, they are not mad at biden for his performance. they are mad at editorial boards for not having his back. and i think back to gavin newsom. right after the debate was a out there being you know, how dare you abandon our guy. and i thought that was ballsy. now i think a lot of voters feel that way. >> i feel like you are in an editorial meeting and know we are going to cover when we get right back. are you sticking around? but the fact that when listening to newsom, he encapsulated this idea that latinos heard the first time trump went down that escalator. when he talked about immigrants coming out and being rapists, most latino voters heard, it's like you are talking about me. it was like ptsd hearing him on stage again. do you think ■çthis nuance was not that biden said anything, but all the stuff trump said will have an impact? >> i think it will help alleviate this collective amnesia. it is just such a complex issue. and neither party has been able to solve it for 30 years or overhaul the nation's immigration laws which is what voters want that polls are showing. a lot of latino voters want tougher enforcement at the border. and it is really complicated when you dig down deeper about what that means. it is not necessarily mass deportations for every undocumented immigrant. but it does need to be a process. so what they haven't been able to see president biden or former president trump really address the issue with the comprehenw+e legislation, it neutralizes the issue for them. like a cynicism seems to set in and they go onto well, if this, if neither candidate will be able to solve this issue, what is it going to matter? >> it is still a question for sure whether or not they show up. but i can tell you they are incredibly engaged. paying attention. and just what they want to know and hear, candidates listening to them. and respecting what they are saying. we did a correspondent piece out of watch ■çparties in phoen and miami. i was interested in the responsing to this piece. i felt some of the young people interviewed for this piece were much more measured and reasonable and not hysterical compared to people on tv panicking a little bit. so i think that the interviews they did, we talked about how the candidates are old. they don't see themselves represented at the highest levels of u.s. politics now. if you are a young woman who cares about reproductive rights and access, president biden is the only choice. so i do think they understand. >> thank you very much for joining me. >> thank you. >> and ■çthanks to all of you f spending some time to us tonight. have a good night. ood night. . their four—point lift design opens my nose for maximum air flow. so, i breathe better. and we both sleep better. and stay married. life, diabetes, there's no slowing down. each day is a unique blend of people to see and things to do. that's why you choose glucerna to help manage blood sugar response. uniquely designed with carbsteady. glucerna. bring on the day. from pep in their step to shine in their coats, when people switch their dog's food to the farmer's dog, the effects can seem like magic. but there's no magic involved.
