committee pulled ahead of invited on fundraising in the past quarter. >> former president trump has absolutely been using his legal challenges in this felony conviction on the campaign trail. >> alfons capone was indicted less than trump. the race to be donald trump's running mate has narrowed to just two men. >> florida senator marco rubio is also reportedly still in contention. >> a lot of the maga are really in advance. >> also, more balance between the two wings of the republican party. >> donald trump is going to change his mind numerous times throughout this. >> is anybody going to watch the debate? >> joe biden is doing a traditional debate. he is ahead of the debate huddling with advisers. trump really likes to do this by the seat of his pants. >> it is the most incompetent, the dumbest, just a horrible hot, horrible president. >> the debate is going to make clear the contrast between the current president and the one who fights for the american people, and the former president, who currently spends full-time fighting for himself. >> it even, once again, i'm stephanie ruhle. welcome to the nightcap, and i hope your seatbelts are on. because we are now just 137 days away and the election. it is the first day of summer and campaign season is certainly heating up. with huge fundraising numbers just weeks until the rnc convention and less than one week away from the first presidential debate. president joe biden and the democrats say that they had a total of 221 million bucks at the end of may come abut his cash advantage over donald trump is now gone. the trump campaign says it ended may with $235 million, and that includes a huge fundraising hall after trump's conviction. this weekend biden is at camp david in the bright prep mode, while trump is already trying to make excuses for himself, telling supporters that the debate moderators are not going to treat them fairly. with that, let's bring in our nightcap, and it is a fantastic group. democratic strategist james carville, who helped elect former president bill clinton in the early 90s. susan page joins us, washington bureau chief for usa today. princeton professor and msnbc contributor. and mary carillo, nbc analyst and olympics correspondent. this will be her 16th time covering the olympics. so the pendulums of debate, that is child's play for mary. james, we are going to start with you. with all that is going on, what do you think we will start in this race? >> pretty stark, maybe a touch better for president biden. but it is very problematic. anybody who says they know who's going to win in november is not really paying attention. hopefully he has a good debate here next thursday. we are watching closely. but i would call this stuck in a pretty narrow trading range, and is pretty close. >> what you think about these fundraising numbers, though? should the biden campaign be worried? >> well, i think president biden has raised a lot of money. you know, some guy who never worked a day in his life right you one $50 million check, that's a pretty good number right there. i am not too concerned, i think the state party is probably doing pretty well. i am not overly concerned about that. >> susan, we are seeing -- >> james? i was just asking james because he is been a political strategist for so long. what is donald trump's team? like here's your opening statement, this debate is rigged. it is fixed, it is fixed, and hunter biden. is that pretty much how he prepped? >> i don't think he prepares. i agree with matthew, he doesn't even know who he is going to pick. he got out of bed one morning and decided to pick somebody. i have always been of the opinion and continue to be of the opinion, it is a good chance he doesn't show up. just get up out of the morning on the 27th and say why am i doing this? is that he was going to testify on his own behalf in this trial, of course, he never did. never put on the defense. and just because trump says he is going to do something is no indication whatsoever that that something is going to be done. i stay skeptical, but i don't think he's bad, i think he's going to try a couple things, a couple of stunts, and hopefully president biden is well prepared and ready for that. >> i was just going to say, i would take the bet that donald trump shows up for the debate, because donald trump, i think, believes that he can be, eviscerate president biden in the debate. i don't know that that's true, but i think that's what trump believes he can do. he has a lot of confidence. he has been very aggressive on the debate stage. as you know, it is super hard for canada to figure out how to counter that. you saw joe biden last time around try to deal with the interruptions, and finally say will you please shut up, man, which is a very memorable debate line. but i think trump is really eager to debate, because he portrays these two versions of biden. one is a kind of guy who would be very skilled and have the moderators on his side. on the other hand, he says what i think he really believes, that biden will not be hard for him. at that biden would be a weak opponent and he can show him up next thursday. >> susan, you and i have known each other for i don't know how many years. >> 100. >> i decided productions. if i'm wrong, i'm a gambler. >> journalists everywhere appreciate the fact that you make outrageous predictions, some of which you believe. >> yes, i just don't think that trump is going to think it's not in his interest. i don't know. that is just sticking my finger in the wind. >> eddie, what do you think we will get in this debate? >> chaos. absolute chaos. we are going to be overrun from trump's sighed with nonsense. i think biden's task is to stay steady in the midst of what will be in onslaught. donald trump believes, i think susan is right in this regard, that he is the master of this form. he thinks he is going to step in front of those cameras and he is going to manhandle joe biden. i think it's important for irish joe to show up and pop in and chin. to pop the convicted felon in the chin. but i don't know how substantive it will be. it will be an indication of the depth of where we have fallen in terms of our politics. so, my expectation, if he shows up. because i trust jim's wisdom here. but my instinct tells me that he is going to be there. it is going to be an absolute mess, in my view. >> politics, the third shot is the one that counts. in tennis, they are going to return your surf. and what you want to do, and i think you can tell me this. you really trying to get in position for that third shot your surf comes back. understand, he will watch and attack. trump will have some kind of answer. just be ready for a short sentence, because the third shot is the kill shot. they have to be ready for that. >> exactly. >> i will be watching for that. i like that. >> i have always believed that. i never was much of a tennis player, but i do know that i see these guys on every serve, it doesn't come back. but on politics it always comes back to you. sometimes you can just kill them with that third shot. >> but think about the fact that we are a week out from this thing and donald trump is already working, trying to complain about the moderators. pretend these two players are athletes. what does it tell you that one athlete is not deep in training, he is out there already complaining, saying this thing is rigged against him? >> i think it's a terrible idea. but, i mean, what is great about sports is it is a level of excellence that you really have to earn. you earn your muscles. you are in the consistency. politics is theater. it is different from sports in that way, isn't it? and donald trump loves a good theater. he is very theatrical, very dramatic. even when he is not making any sense, he is loud about it. >> susan, we are seeing some people come off the bench that we haven't seen before. melinda french gates this week came out and endorsed joe biden, and she said she had to. everything is at stake when it comes to women and girls. were you surprised that we heard from her? and do you think more voices like hers will come out soon? >> you know, i think there is a sense among a lot of americans that this is an election with stakes we have never faced before, never in modern times. the future of democracy. there are some trump supporters who think that way. but there are a lot of supporters of president biden, or maybe phil have not taken sides yet, who believed there would be a danger to democracy to elect donald trump with some of the proposals he has made, some of the ideas of taking control of the justice department. for instance. so yes, i think we will have some endorsements like that. i am not sure, i think these endorsements matter very much. i think it is more likely to matter to voters, and when it counts, i think, for the slight improvement that we have seen in several national and swing state polls for joe biden is how people feel things are going in their own lives. not what a celebrity or executive or a philanthropist tells them. so, if the economy has been going pretty well, inflation in a slightly better check, wages are going up, unemployment continues to be at record lows. i think that is why biden is doing a little better, even in the fox news poll. for the first time since october, this week biden led trump in the fox news poll. and i think that is what that reflects. >> i think susan is absolutely right. you know, you can get celebrity endorsements, stephanie. that will be okay. that is fine. but it is all about the blocking and tackling on the ground. i think biden, the pan campaign has to flood the zone. the gop has to be intense, particularly in milwaukee, in detroit, in philadelphia, atlanta, or fulton county. flood the zone. we need to get on the ground to get folk out. and you can have endorsements, that will excite people, i suppose. at the end of the day you need a ground game. and the ground game can defeat trump and his chaos, i believe. >> james, someone once said, i think they were pretty smart, that it is the economy, stupid. and this is been really collocated for the president for the last year or so, because susan just laid out all of this good economic data. but it has not aligned with how the american people are feeling. do you think that is starting to shift? >> i certainly hope so, and it is a kind of rule, you have to be very deep into an economic recovery so that a lot of people feel it. but i can show you evidence, what president biden is not doing nearly as well as he should be with young voters in the 30s, actually doing better with voters over 65. and in this economy very much benefits people like me, who don't have a mortgage, who are not savers, who are in the stock market. and i think it is great. but if you're 26, you are looking out today, how expensive it is to buy a home. how expensive a college education is. and i think the president needs to sort of acknowledge that. and my suggestion is that he do away with the trump tax cuts and come up with $400,000 and start a first-time homebuyers relief fund. tell people you see him out there. tell people you understand. if i tell a 26-year-old oh, man, this is the best economy i can imagine. i made x numbers of dollars today in the nasdaq or something. they don't know what i'm talking about. and we've got to be careful, that other people talk and think. >> yeah, we want young voters to vote. i mean, voting is one of the rails on which our society runs. but if you vote for trump and he wins, he is going to wipe out voting altogether. i've got to assume that young people do understand that. >> i'm not sure, mary. i think we have to do a better job of telling them. tell them about the supreme court, that is the money question. that is the one that they want. and, you know, people know what voting means. when i see these younger blacks that are turned off, not voting, or something, it would be unthinkable to john lewis. it would be unthinkable to jim clyburn. it would be unthinkable to rosa parks. it would be unthinkable to willie mays that you won't vote. and we are not doing a sufficient job of communicate that. the black experience of voters is entirely different than the white experience of voting. we just roll out of bed and vote the way our grandparents noted. it is a different experience. and we have to remind people of the. >> right, and i think that is a really important point for a number of different reasons, james. but i think it's important for us to understand, these young folk are engaged. remember in the midterms, young voters in so many ways saved american democracy. you think about what was happening in wisconsin, how they flip the court there. how young voters in madison, university of wisconsin madison it turned out in droves. you think about young folk in 2020, and the way they stay turned out, black folk and particularly black women. we have to begin to say what is at the heart, why are they lukewarm in this moment? of course it had something to do with everything you talked about, james. about mortgages, rent, they're having a difficult time. it is also about gaza and what is happening there. it seems that they are making a judgment about the political process, but they have to understand, even as you bring critique on the biden administration, that they have to keep these folks out of office so they can continue to bring critique. because if trump and his people win, democracy is a wrap. and that is not hyperbole. i think that is absolutely the truth. >> you are right, we have to do a better job. we just have to do a better job of wringing this home. their participation and decision based on what actually is happening right now. i think if we are able to do that, we can do better. >> yeah. >> susan, monday marks two years since the dobbs decision, and of course, row being overturned. is that going to be the catalyst to get young voters to go out and vote in november? we know joe biden wants that to be the case. >> you know, ever since the dobbs decision, we have seen this incredible energy on this issue of reproductive rights among young people, also among women, suburban women, independent women, republican leaning women. and it is really deliberate for democrats in a series of elections since then. it is probably not enough on its own, just weighing a close presidential election. it is a powerful issue for democrats. but there are democrats who think this issue alone is going to rescue the democratic party in november. i think that is probably wrong. it is one of several really powerful issues that people vote on. the economy is one, democracy is another. and as eddie mentioned, gaza and the situation in the middle east has become, and excitedly, a defining issue in this election, and one that has presented some real challenges for joe biden and is likely to be the source of some enormous protests, we expect, at the chicago convention in august. >> i think susan has a point. is this enough? we have not lost an election since dobbs. not south, north, east, west, midwest. i know it is a different turnout model, and i kind of share susan's thing that it may not be enough. but it is a powerful issue, let me tell you. there is some power in that punch. >> then let me close this by asking the world's dumbest question. after everything i have listened to you all say for the last 10 minutes, why is this race this close, eddie? >> you know, first of all, you never ask a dumb question. particularly the world's dumbest question. that is just a miss description. i think the question actually goes to the core of things. we talk about policy. we can talk about issues. but i think at the heart of this, it is an x essential question. that passions are driving this election for the presidency. there are so many out there who believe they are losing their way of life. trump is an avatar for their grievance. so it is baked into the process that what we are dealing with right now is, i think, a fundamental question about who we are as americans. and some people have made a choice. and that choice informs their support of donald trump, and others are kind of wavering. they are not quite sure. so i think there is some deep existential questions, cultural questions beneath the questions around policy that often drive our political discussions. there is something much more cultural at work here, i think, stephanie, that is driving this whole thing. >> it is all about grievance, but it is extraordinary that people think that donald trump is the one who can solve it. all right, nobody is going anywhere. when we come back, the line between church and state is getting murky in james's home state of louisiana. how the new law to require the 10 commandments in every public school classroom is not a one- off. it is playing directly into the project 2025 playbook. and later, america's top dr. gives his diagnosis on social media. why he is pushing for serious warning labels to protect our children. when the nightcap and the 11th hour continue. all in one. to those with migraine, i see you. for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura and the preventive treatment of episodic migraine in adults. don't take if allergic to nurtec odt. allergic reactions can occur, even days after using. most common side effects were nausea, indigestion, and stomach pain. it's time we all shine. talk to a healthcare provider about nurtec odt from pfizer. you have covered politics for a long time. did you ever think you would see this, especially in 2024? >> it is kind of a throwback, it seems like, to an earlier century. there was a time when, especially in southern, especially in the south, but also elsewhere in rural areas where you might see displays of christianity, religion in classrooms. but we seem to have really moved away from it in our extremely diverse country. so this is a surprise, and i am not a lawyer, but it does seem to me that this is unlikely to stand up to a constitutional challenge. the separation of church and state was maybe the primary founding interval of the united states america. >> they know this might not stand up in court, but they are trying to make a point. james, what is going on in your state? >> what goes on with religion and politics in the state, huey long when he first ran for governor gave a speech, and he said when i was a boy i would take my catholic grandparents to mass and i would come back and take my babb's grand parents to church. it was given in the guy said i didn't know you had catholic grandparents. he said don't be an idiot, i didn't have a horse. but the louisiana legislature is traditionally, and now more than ever is a pack of tools and fools. you tell us, your faculty brethren at princeton. this is the first shot in a world of christian nationalism. these people are heavily invested in louisiana, and they are extremely well-funded. and we are now, as you say, existential. the religious freedom in this country, freedom of conscience and thought is put front and center, and this is our version of fort sumter or pearl harbor. and to just think that this is about somebody doing this, one of the things another professor pointed out, it does not say which way they have to pay. so maybe the teachers can put them facing the wall. i don't know. but it sounds so stupid, and it is all so part of the culture. and politicians using religion to try to force it in their political ambitions. and they are not even clever about it anymore. they should have a sense of humor, a clever story he made up in the back of his head. jeff landry could not think of a better story if you gave him two years. >> but more than 20 years ago this happened in alabama. remember? they had to remove a two ton 10 commandments monument from the supreme court building. because it was unconstitutional. >> how did we get here? that is true. the supreme court ruled that this was unconstitutional or than 40 years ago. so, eddie, you are the professor. you study religion. how did we get here today? mary just gave a great example. >> yeah, well, first of all i think there are forces out there who believe they have a court now that would be more open to the position that they are taking. and we need to see this, there is a connection between what we talked about in the last segment and the segment. landry would not even be an office if like folk would've turned out in new orleans. so we have an idea. >> the black turnout was really lame. >> it was poor in louisiana in that time. but i also want to make a connection. there is this issue around the 10 commandments, or prayer in school, religion in schools. there is the issue around abortion. there is the issue around lgbtq plus. all of these elements were features of jerry falwell's movement. it was the features of the moral majority. these were the culture were 3.0. we are in the midst, stephanie, of relitigating the mid-20th century. and you have white christian nationalist who are pushing this agenda, and it is connecting with certain views that have always been in the soup. so i think we have to be careful about what we are seeing. we can dismiss it as nonsense, but it has a long lineage in terms of our political culture, it seems to me. >> you would be an idiot to dismiss this. we thought that the right to an abortion was enshrined in the constitution, and for 50 years they fought this thing. and we lost. and if you read lisa layers book , you can see why we lost. the liberal advocacy groups are not worth the power it would take to boil them up. and they just out organized us. these people are coming. they got billions of dollars and they are coming. that is just what they are. mike johnson is a theocrat. i don't think he would even go out of his way to try and hide it. and there is a whole mess of them around baton rouge. very influential and very expanded. and they have a vision way beyond louisiana for this theocracy. and anybody who dismisses that is, i don't say you are a fool, you are just uninformed. >> susan, to that very point, last week i interviewed democratic congressman jared huffman. he is the founder of a new task force that is aimed at taking on project 2025. and he said something alarming. that if democrats in congress wait around and just react to project 2025 as it unfolds, it will be too late. what do you think about that? >> yeah, absolutely. this is not 2016. in 2016 democrats didn't think trump was going to win. trump did not think trump was going to win. so when he did win and he opened this new administration in the white house, they were not a well-organized machine. you know, trump has outlined a lot of positions during the campaign, but they have not built the kind of infrastructure to implement them. so that made it harder for him to be effective in some of the things he wanted to do. that will be different this time. if trump wins in november he will have this heritage foundation operation project 2025 in place that will have policies outlined, papers drafted, personnel identified to move much more quickly and efficiently, to do the things that he wants to do. the other difference, i think, if we are looking at that prospect is that when he won in 2016, there were still some republicans who were following the establishment republican line, providing some guardrails around the trump administration. those people are mostly either out of office or cowed. so you should not expect some of the pushback that trump got internally with his first administration if he wins a second one. >> you know what, susan? what you just said was so heavy, i am going to take a commercial break so everybody can go get themselves a stiff drink to fully finish the show. everyone is staying right there. when we come back, social media apps could soon have warning labels treating them like they are cigarettes. but the most important question, will it make an actual difference? or is this country to deep, too addicted at this point? when the 11th hour and the nightcap continue. go get a quick drink. prescribed h-i-v treatment, biktarvy. biktarvy is a complete, one-pill, once-a-day treatment used for h-i-v in many people whether you're 18 or 80. with one small pill, biktarvy fights h-i-v to help you get to undetectable—and stay there whether you're just starting or replacing your current treatment. research shows that taking h-i-v treatment as prescribed and getting to and staying undetectable prevents transmitting h-i-v through sex. serious side effects can occur, including kidney problems and kidney failure. rare, life-threatening side effects include a buildup of lactic acid and liver problems. do not take biktarvy if you take dofetilide or rifampin. tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines and supplements you take, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney or liver problems, including hepatitis. if you have hepatitis b do not stop taking biktarvy without talking to your healthcare provider. common side effects were diarrhea, nausea, and headache. no matter where life takes you, biktarvy can go with you. talk to your healthcare provider today. i don't know how long it's been there. long enough to produce eggs, it seems. biktarvy can go with you. it would appear that it has begun moving towards us! visionworks. see the difference. i'm andrea, and this is why i switched to shopify. it gave me so much peace of mind. if we make a change, my site's not going to go down. and just knowing that i have a platform that we can rely on, that is gold to us. start your free trial today. - it's apparent. not me. - yeah. nice going lou! nothing like a little confidence boost to help ease you back in to the dating scene. that includes having a smile you feel good about. fortunately, aspen dental specializes in dentures and implants made just for you. and with flexible financing, you don't need to sacrifice quality work for a price that fits your budget. at $0 down plus 0% interest if paid in full in 18 months. helping our patients put their best smile forward. it's one more way aspen dental is in your corner. >> no, it doesn't do anything to solve the problem. but it puts us on a path to eventually solve it, i think. i think we need to understand that we are all, especially our children, the whole into these algorithms. these algorithms that are forcing us to look upon ourselves, like young girls who are experiencing these deep, deeply troubled understandings of themselves, this sense of their bodies, their sense of beauty. the ways in which it is driving young people towards suicidality and the like. part of what we have to do is begin to think of these platforms as social goods. right now they are platforms aimed at making profit. but they are also places for public deliberation and the like. so they need to be regulated. i know that goes against the basic bloodstream of, the orientation of certain folk in the country. but they have to be regulated for the very foundation of american democracy would begin, continue to pray. i know that sounds hyperbolic. but it is absolutely the case, it seems to me. >> mary, children in this country, especially girls, are experiencing self-esteem issues, a loneliness crisis. and it is, in large part, because of the social media platforms. what do we need these companies to do? because unless we force rules, the idea to do the right thing, there right thing is to make more money. >> but how possible is tech regulation? that's what it comes down to. and it is the cyber bully gangs were cowards go to die. i will tell you, i will give you an example. it happens in women's tennis association, they are you are so fat, i lost a bunch of money on you. you watch kids coming off the court, these young women, they got their bags. they have lost their match, they have taken their phone out of their bags and they are looking at all this god-awful stuff that people are take saying about them. i see it all the time, all the time. and you just pray, you say stay off of social media. don't look at it during this tournament. that is how bad it is. and how you regulate that, maybe it is too late. is it too late? how do you protect your kids? >> listen, i have the reverse. i am really difficult, and my kids have very limited access to social media. and the problem with that is you are the odd man out. you are one step behind and you are not connected to that social circle. so there isn't an easy answer. but susan, it goes beyond mental health. now we are hearing more and more stories about kids being the victims of social media scams. they are getting tricked into sending inappropriate images or paying people money. they are getting stalked by predators. lawmakers know about all of this. but congress has done nothing. is that because, at the end of the day, the lobbying dollars from these social media companies are so massive that congress just continues to turn a blind eye? just having another hearing with ceos doesn't do squat. is just a show. >> you know, part of it may be an issue of campaign cash. but part of it is just trying to figure out what would be effective to do. the surgeon general's proposal, i wonder if it was just an effort to get everybody's attention. as he has been talking for several years about the need to do more for social media companies, to act more responsibly. and he hasn't gotten very far. it is not like there is one solution. it is not like there is one wall we can pass or one label we can slap on social media sites that will take care of this problem. we need to do a bunch of different things together, parents need to, congress needs to do more regulation, social media companies need to be more responsible. we shouldn't look at this as something that is already done and there is nothing we can do about it. because look at the plight of kids these days when they are growing up. it has become a really tough age. >> james, why do you think congress has done so little? yes, please. >> i don't know, i will say this about social media. the meanest specimen on earth is a seventh grade girl. and i know each one of you all will agree with me. i mean, there is nothing more vicious than a seventh grade girl, i promise you. and we had that experience. and people are very concerned about. how do you ban it? it is out there in the ether, it is in the bloodstream. i don't know, i am not savvy enough. i would defer to somebody that has better ideas. but people are concerned about it. i see polling, icy data, people don't like it. they don't like big tech. but how do you outlaw it? i don't know. i am not sufficiently able to do that. but i know that these seventh grade girls use it like crazy now. >> they sure do. so, let me just ask you this. do you feel like most parents are worrying too much about leaving the kids unsupervised in the outside world, but we are not worrying enough about what kids are doing inside with their phones?
