contingent on if blackman actually feel like mike tyson or darrell strawberry. what i have to say i talked to a lot of people on the ground and some of them, in the 20 to 28--year-old age group and they have also said the same thing. not everyone, obviously, but this is something that caught my attention. in fact, when i was talking to my editors i pushed back and i said that's not really a thing and still i started asking people and they said they do a enter by peers not with the conviction but how they felt the judicial system treated them in the past experiment interesting. thank you so much. appreciate you talking about this article. in moments, what we're learning about donald trump's push to keep you from seeing a movie about his life. >> how could they do this? how could they surround with such fealty a failed former president , a most distasteful man. and now a felon. >> president biden is in california and tonight he will be joined by former president obama at a star-studded fundraising event that his campaign says is already raised a record $28 million. the headliners include george clooney, julia roberts, jimmy kimmel, jason bateman and jack black and more. donald trump will speak tonight to support ascetic conservative event already underway in detroit. we have several reporters and analysts in place to go over these developments for you and we begin in detroit with tosha burns. welcome to you. who is donald trump trying to win over during his visit to michigan today? >> reporter: right now representative matt gaetz is on the stage behind me. the former president will be here in a couple of hours but before he speaks at this turning point conference, he will be speaking to a group of black pastors in detroit and this is part of his continued effort to try to chip away at that demographic of the democratic base. trying to win over black voters, especially black men. you just talked about some of that in the last hour. this is where he sees serious opportunity. he is also targeting young voters, and that is the bread and butter of turning point. this is an organization founded on trying to get young conservatives into the fold. and he is doing that be at tiktok. you see them posting videos with logan paul. he's talking about a housing crisis for trying to cater to that demographic. at the same time though, this event here so far today has really been focused on the maga base the talking points that get to the heart of the trump part of the party riled up. number one is january 6. we heard steve bannon talking about that earlier today and marjorie taylor greene also had something to say. >> you don't feel that about the election? there is nothing wrong with protesting it. and there was nothing wrong with protesting the election on january 6 for and any democrat -- that's right -- and any democrat and any person from the mainstream media and anyone that wants to continue to shame us for january 6 can go to hell. >> reporter: alex, there's been a lot of talk about 2020 but also laying the groundwork for 2024. there have been countless, baseless claims the democrats are trying to steal the election again. once again that is something that gets this audience riled up. steve bannon, and allie of the former president scheduled to turn himself into prison by july 1 because of his contempt 1 of congress charge, asked the audience here, are we at work? he received a resounding yes. he kept talking about battleground and battlefields and about victory or death. that is the rhetoric your hearing all around here and something that really speaks to a lot of the voters that have shown up here tonight. >> and it's scary. thank you for sharing all of that. tosha burns. meanwhile donald trump has 26 days until sentencing for his felony convictions and 30 days until the republican national convention but sources tell nbc news preparations are underway in case trump is not able to attend, setting up virtual appearances if he is under house arrest. joining me now is brendan buck, former press secretary for paul ryan and msnbc political analyst, along with brittany cunningham, host of the undistracted podcast informant member of president bob obama's policing task force. you heard marjorie taylor greene at that event. now i want to play steve bannon from a short time ago. same place. here it is. >> are we at war? is this a political war to the knife? are you prepared to leave it all on the battlefield in 2024? on the afternoon of january 20, we must free the 1400 patriots and must incarcerate the criminals. >> that guy there expects to be back in the white house that donald trump wins. what is your reaction and why isn't this exactly why democrats frame a possible trump presidency as dangerous? >> remember for a few weeks after nikki haley dropped out the idea that donald trump would try to play to the independence and went back the middle? the alternate reality that so many republicans are living in. we are in the middle of a general election now. you should be appealing towards an independent base of swing voters. but the entire party is built around these nonsensical ideas, these conspiracy clearings, this french stuff. the conference he's going to be speak out is the type of thing that is so fringy you would never see a member of congress there. now the former president of the united states is going to speak there. and it shows how completely entrenched the party is in only appealing to the base. there may be a way to win an election like that these days, i don't know. but it feels like you are writing off a huge number of people who don't like joe biden. but when you remind them of this crazy talk, it makes it uncomfortable for a lot of people to come to donald trump side. >> i went to pick up on that. do those words and the call for action, does it scare you or do you see it as an opportunity for democrats to use this against the former president, or both? >> i would say both because i see it as an opportunity for democrats to remind america just how scary it would be for this party, this president, and that platform to take root once again in the white house. look. i'm not at all surprised seeing what we are seeing and i'm certainly not surprised by saying this further entrenchment. when you have a pace that has been told in political messages from ronald reagan to gately atwater to the bush and certainly to mr. trump that they are entitled to the privileges they have been enjoying through dominant culture, those people will see any kind of equality, any kind of justice, any kind of equity for anyone else as a direct threat. so this is why steve bannon gets on stage and says this is not a fight or even a battle. this is a war that is precisely how they are treating this and democrats should be spotlighting that at every chance they get. they are at war against everyday people who are very simply trying to keep a roof over their heads and food on their family plates and trying to make sure they can live not just in surviving ways but lead fighting lives in this country that sold us the stream. that should be the democratic message from now ad infinitum. >> there is so much unprecedented about where we are right now. here is an unprecedented question. if donald trump cannot attend in person, what effect would that have on the convention? what while up his base even more , and what do you think it would do for people who are on the fence? >> i think the picture is an area in which this is happening. he is confined to his home. i think that alone will rile up people. it certainly, i don't think i might good to that middle to have your nominee be sentenced and not able to travel. went donald trump last week said milwaukee is a horrible city, or something to that affect, i don't think that was an accident. i think is very much aware there is either a possibility or a likelihood he will not be able to be there. it may not come to fruition but it's on his mind. i've been enough of those rooms where he is rattling around saying a bunch of nonsense, but there's usually something tied to it. something has gone into his head and he thinks that's a possibility and i think he is trying to lay some groundwork as to why he may not be able to be there. >> does it help democrats, brittany, if trump can't attend the highest profile gop event of the presidential election cycle? can you imagine an acceptance speech from mar-a-lago? >> listen. if i'm a democratic operative i am playing video of donald trump sitting at home unable to attend his own nominating convention on constant loop. it will be on every single social media platform. it will be in every single commercial slot that i can find and afford. because i want that image out there to the american people. i want the american people to be very clear that if the supreme court and or other judicial institutions will not forbid a convicted felon from running for president, then we, the people, have to hold the line. and to be clear, it's not just about his present circumstance. it's about all of the things that he promised to do when he gets into office because this is a person who keeps showing up in front of america as a loser. and what donald trump shows up as a loser, he vows to take vengeance on anybody who pointed and laughed at him when that happened. he has promised a revengeful cabinet. he's promised a revengeful policy platform. project 2025 is a reminder of just how vengeful not only donald trump but this entire party can be. and now is the time for democrats, and everyday people who are clued in, to remind everyone they know of that. >> britney, with printed referenced earlier, the fact that donald trump allegedly called milwaukee the host city of the rnc a horrible city, i mean, how is that going to play out? i want to say the trump campaign denies he said it and said he was saying something relative to crime, but how does that go down with wisconsin voters? >> isn't it fascinating that the so-called cover that is operative put forth was a narrative about crime and not the actual nature of the city? that is a dog whistle for black people. milwaukee, much like baltimore, and other city that he patently insulted from the country, is a city with a large black population, a very proud black population, and he continues to go after cities and locations and regions that have black populations, black leadership. leadership of color. and these dog whistles will still continue to appeal to the base irrespective of what city he's talking about. it may have been while walking yesterday. could be my hometown of st. louis tomorrow. it could be oakland, california, the week after that . what we know to be true is that donald trump understands the dog whistles necessary for his base and so does the gop and they will keep saying those as loudly as they can no matter how they try to throw rocks and hide their hands? >> she has a point. that will appeal to his base, but does that do material damage to trump's chances in a key swing state, which wisconsin is? >> there is no smart play here. that's why the only reason i think he would say such a thing is he's trying to lay groundwork for not showing up. wisconsin is one of the most important states he has to win. it put him in the white house eight years ago and was one of the ones that cost them four years ago. they constant problem with donald trump is that the things he shoots from the hip always undermined the politics for in some ways he actually has decent political instincts but he can't help himself by doing things like this and revealing his true character for he thinks maybe he say behind closed doors. he says all kinds of crazy stuff like this all the time. there's been comparisons to joe biden and talking about donald trump's mind going and him slipping. he's always been like this. years ago i've been in rooms hearing him say stuff like this pick to me the bigger thing and it reminds people that is not a very stable person at a time we need strong leadership. he's not really something you can rely on. >> less than two weeks from the first debate between trump and president biden but the biden campaign plans to let trump a trumpet hope his extreme views and what you are describing, the meandering way of speaking -- they are hoping of course the trump amnesia we have talked about. can a debate do that? >> this will be a fascinating debate. you typically talk about the incumbent president not doing well on a debate because they haven't been challenged in a while and not used to having debates but the challenger usually does very well. this is a situation where both of them will face that issue. donald trump skipped all the republican primary debates and hasn't debated in years. but this is also clearly someone who is not used to being challenged. and when presumably the president pushes back on him , seeing how he reacts to those things though she lives in a bubble or no one ever questions anything he does or says and surround himself with yes-men it will be interesting to see how he responds when he gets some digs for example when joe biden brings up that he's a convicted felon. how would you react? >> how about you, brittany? what do you expect from the debate? >> it's clear that we will see a lot of comparisons about their fitness for office, especially given both of their advanced ages. but i think it's going to be critically important for president biden to explicitly draw out the distinctions and differences between key, donald trump, and this gop party. as you said, there has been a high level of trip amnesia that we have been seeing throughout the country pico and many people are thinking, i survived him before. i can survive him again. not fully realizing he is coming back to do even more damage. also, president biden will have to make that explicit and as plain as possible for the american people for certainly let trump be trump, but make sure to draw those lines at difference as clearly as possible so that there can be no confusion about which candidate is actually going to move us backward and which candidate at the very least can offer us stability as we work collectively to move forward. >> good point. you know what i'm waiting for the debate is for donald trump to make an issue of joe biden's agent for joe biden to go, dude, you are 78. anyway. we will see if that happens. thank you, both. good to see you. coming up we have an update on a movie that donald trump does not want you to say. i was speak with someone about that. and he will also be attending president biden's fundraiser to my pick spoiler alert. it's not george clooney. maybe next time. back in 90 seconds. oh yeah man, horsepower keeps you going, but torque gets you going. ♪ ♪ [ engine revving ] oh now we're torquin'! - i love car puns! oh, i know. pppp-powershot!
