reelected. i'll get reaction from quintin folk, president for the biden harris campaign. and steve phillips standard of democracy. and inside the fight to enshrine abortion laws. and breaking with the boss. former vice president mike pence on january 6th and his decision not to endorse donald trump. the fact that the president continues to insist that i had the right to overturn the election that day is a fundamental difference. but i want to be clear that, you know, i've forgiven the president in my heart for what happened that day. i'm jonathan capehart, this is the sunday show. it's official, biden versus trump. and what is shaping up to be the first presidential general election rematch in nearly 70 years. sure it feels like deja vu all over again. but this 2024 version is all together different. biden seeks reelection with a strong record to stand on and defend. a record that includes a booming economy despite all those hair on fire prediction that the u.s. would slip into recession. unemployment is just 3.9%. for the last two years folks. in february job growth was more than predicted. the biden administration has also canceled millions in student loans. the fund raising, well, that's another story. today the biden-harris campaign announced it raised more than $63 million in february. not only that, with the campaign also reported that it has a record $155 million cash on hand. like, cash they can spend right now. now, let's turn our weary gaze to the twice impeached disgraced former president donald trump. since 2020, trump has been found liable for sexual assault and fraud. plus he has 80 indictments and has millions in legal penalties. trump continues to push a violent vision for america. he continues to promote the big lie. now bolstered by his hand picked and newly installed leadership team which includes his daughter-in-law laura trump. the campaign arm is establishing a new so called integrity unit led by maga election denier cristina bobb. trump started his speech by saluting the insurrectionist that were convicted for january 6th. once again, trump called them quote, hostages. then he resorted to an all too familiar play book. making racist remarks about migrants, eluding to political violence and casting doubt on our electoral process. >> if i had prisons that were teaming with ms13 and all sorts of people that they've got to take care of for the next 50 years right. young people who are in jail for years, if you call them people. i don't know if you call them people. in some cases they're not people in my opinion. we're going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line and you're not going to be able to sell those. if i get elected. if i don't get elected it's going to be a blood bath for the whole. that's going to be the least of it. it's going to be a blood bath for the country. if this election, if this election isn't one, i'm not sure that you will ever have another election in this country. does that make sense? i don't think you're going to have another election in this country. >> i have two great guests to discuss all of this. campaign manager for the biden campaign, and steve phillips author of how we win the civil war and founder of democracy in color. but let me start with you quinn quinton thank you very much for coming on the sunday show. trump's team says trump's word of blood bath was taken out of context. was he? >> no. this is who trump is. we saw him call his supporters on january 6th. this is right out of the play book. trump is weak and deeply insecure of this election and he's only in it for himself. trump is saying the quiet part outloud. the people who are saying his comments were taken out of context haven't said anything about all the other things that trump has done. all the other times he's incited political violence so no it wasn't taken out of context at all. this is who donald trump is and america needs to stand up and listen to him. >> on that point, trump says violent stuff on this all the time. why did the biden/harris campaign thought they should call him out this time. >> they call him out all the time. he's trying to get people to stand up and be violent in this country and this is not who we are in this country. president biden and vice president harris got to work trying to quell this. trying to bring americans together. trump is dividing this country. he's failing to unite his own supporters and it's showing. we're going to continue to call trump out on his extreme the positions and especially when he's cozying up to dictators and being exactly who he's telling americans he is. >> they have an election integrity university that will focus on legal challenges that could resort to restriction to the ballot. how does a campaign plan to combat that? >> look, our campaign has been focused on making sure we're doing everything we can to make sure people across this country have the right to vote. that we're protecting it. that they're not getting misinformation about their voting. it's no surprise that trump takes over the rnc and immediately sets up an election of integrity division that is with a self-proclaimed election denier in conspiracy theorist. so we're going to hold our head up and make sure that people vote. >> this is about the uncommitted votes that were cast after the devastation in gaza. more than 100 million in michigan voted uncommitted. in illinois, palestinian and muslim groups are pushing for a similar vote in their state's primary on tuesday. what is the campaign doing to heal that rift? it's a significant rift. >> we're going to continue to talk to these individuals. what i'm saying about those voting uncommitted is that president biden wants the same thing they to which is long and lasting peace in the middle east. both in israel and gaza. he's continuing to put in the work to get to that point. a lot of this work is done behind the scenes it's not up front. president biden is trying to unite america and also solve this issue. we understand that it is a deeply personal issue for a lot of people. the president is going to continued to outreach. our campaign is going to continue to do outreach to these voters to make sure they have a place in this campaign. >> speaking of outreach, officials met with palestinian leaders in chicago. more than 3,000 of those leaders refused to attend the meeting because of the war. does the president himself plan to meet with these leaders? >> president biden is willing to sit down with anybody. anybody that's willing to express their concerns. he understands these issues and he's working to resolve it. that's the difference between he and donald trump when it comes to this. president biden wants peace in the region. donald trump is calling far muslim ban and donald trump doesn't have the tact, skill, or ability to bring this resolution to the close. >> i can't have you here without asking you about this, all this ink that's been spilled about, about the fact that president biden is losing black support. losing support among black americans, do you believe? you guys do internal polling? are you losing black folks? >> what i would say is no we're not but we have to continue to make sure we're reaching out to these voters. it's been the number one thing on our mind. we went in to talk to these communities both black and hispanic communities to make sure they know we don't take them as monolithic. we have to continue to do the work and talk to these voters about what president biden and kamala harris have done for their lives. and point out that donald trump does not care about them, he's only in it for himself. >> principal deputy campaign manager for the biden/harris campaign did i get the title right. >> yes you did. >> quinton, thank you very much for come coming on the show. and joining me now is, the author of how we win the civil war. are you concerned about what's coming out of michigan? >> i am concerned. it's important to recognize both of my books is that there is a new majority majority. the overwhelmingly majority of people. if the majority of people turn out to the polls then biden will win. and should win rather handedly. there was a drop of enthusiasm, there was party splitting and that's how trump snuck through in michigan and wisconsin. that's a concern that washington needs to prioritize and needs to really take strong steps and send a clear signal that we are championing peace in that region. >> let me ask you the same question i just asked quinton folks. all these stories we're seeing suggesting the president, president biden is losing black support. you're in it, are those stories remotely true? >> they're not. what we really have a situation in the national politics and media really is emperor has no clothes situation with frankly the new york times and nate holmes polls. they continue to show, we're losing all this black support. african-americans at 66% for biden. the average historically is 88%. every single presidential election since 1976 has been 88% black support. biden got 87%. and even in the ohio abortion measure in november there was like 83% of african-americans supporting that measure. how is that poll showing that there's been this drop off and so it really is a case of this quite possible that the new york times and nate cohen and his polling does not know how to poll people of color and they lack expertise in that realm. >> why democrats are hopeful in north carolina and nervous in georgia. it points out that democrats are pessimistic in georgia because of the marquee race in 2020. you have said you don't think the party is investing enough in georgia, what else should they be doing? >> that's what joe biden said on election night. because he did not expect to actually win. his campaign did not expect to actually win. but stacy abrams did. she had done the work a decade ago when she told me there's a million unregistered voters in georgia. i'm going to register them to work. there needs to be a thousand staffed people on the ground in every single county in georgia. letting people know about the election. i've heard from top people the democratic people and top donors that they're not prioritizing georgia. how many elections does rafael warnack need to win before we believe in the priority of georgia. >> one more question for you before i have to let you go. you wrote a piece titled yes biden can still win. in one part you write, perpetuating pessimism is doing the republicans job for them by spreading doom and gloom and diminishing the motivation to turn out and vote. steve, a to the men. really quickly tell us more about that. >> under all the fundamentals so that biden is actually the front runner. the economy is better, the electoral continues to transform. 10 million new voters turn 18. the majority of them people of color. and that there's been a decline in swing voters. there's almost a vanishing swing of voters. if there's massive turn out biden is going to win. but that's the big challenge. are they going to invest, are they going to inspire, are people going to get pessimistic and not turn out. >> steve phillips as always thank you very much for coming to the sunday show. >> thank you for having me, jonathan. coming up, president biden hits the state of arizona with efforts to get an amendment on abortion on the ballot in november. >> i ask two people in the fight how this could change the momentum in the race in their state. plus we get into some of the worse moments from the trump campaign trail. the worsee trump campaign trail. >> we're actually very close to that. we started the campaign in chief in september of 2023. several days later we started our large scale operation to gather the 384,000 ballot signatures required to get on the ballot on november 2024. and in january, we announced we had surpassed the minimum number. >> can it be a boom to president biden's chances to winning arizona again this november? >> i mean, i will say this. we welcome all of the enthusiasm and support for our campaign. and listen, we know the vast majority of arizona voters from across the political spectrum and from various personal reasons that women should have the freedom. >> let's talk about the right to conception act? what happened now to the legislature. >> our right to contraception the -- contraception act is no longer viable. it's not happening. our effort to bring it to the floor was done because it had been introduced by our senator. we wanted to get a chance to bring this to the floor and bring it to conception in state law. we know that there are other threats that are coming to our rights. >> senator, former vice president mike pence layed out his version for abortion ban this morning. listen to what he had to say. >> we're a pro-life party. i mean, i really do believe that there is a national role. i would like to see our nominee place a 15 week ban. >> will that fly with arizona voters? >> i don't think so. as chris mentioned, these rights are bipartisan rights. these are supported across the aisle with a broad spectrum of the public. we also know that it's not going to stop with a 15 week ban. so we need to be protecting affirmatively these rights as quickly as possible in state law our republican majority is limit in the legislature. with a different majority we could change that. >> this is for both of you in the 90 seconds we have left. i love your thoughts on new reporting showing that republicans plan to lean hard into an anti abortion message going into november. what do you make of that? chris, you go first. >> well, i think they're trying a number of things. first they've been trying to moderate their message in an election year which is a clear sign that they know that their positions are wildly out of step with the american voters. even in supporters these 15 week and 16 week bans hurt pregnant patients. right now in arizona we're awaiting a decision from our supreme that will place a law from world war i. the american people are with us and so are arizona voters. >> senator, your thoughts. >> that's right. i think what we're seeing is republicans are leaning into these extreme concepts of banning the right to abortion. they're highlighting that they don't necessarily believe that invitro fertilization should be valid and i don't think that helps them. >> priah and chris, thank you so much for coming to the sunday show. >> thank you. >> thank you. up next, remembering two giants in the fight for equality. my thoughts on civil rights civs really? these two men. >> i'm not going to call the relationship complicated. it's very different at best. you know, the democrats jonathan and congratulations on that magnificent interview with the president. but you have to remember democrats are not just doing this willie nilly. they have talked to many jewish leaders. they have heard, benjamin netanyahu even beyond this has not always been the most credible person. let's look back at 2019, okay. when he was indicted on what is it, bribery, fraud and breech of trust. so we have to remember those things as well. but, also, this is one of the key pieces for democrats. america does not want to continue to see this war going on. too much bloodshed on all sides. palestinians and israelis and they want the israelis home. okay. the hostages. so this is a move to shift hopefully, to shift some dynamics to bring the hostages back. and to bring peace. to free people, and i mean think about this. >> quick point, we have to go. >> something has to give, and schumer came out and said netanyahu we simply need an election so you may have to go. >> and hopefully this dynamic shift will lead to something that brings us to a resolution sooner rather than later. april ryan, basil, scott whitman, thank you very much for coming back to the sunday show. that will do it for me today. thank you for watching, i'll be back next saturday and sunday back here on msnbc. remember to follow us on x. you can also catch clips of the show on you tube. don't go any where. don't go any where. lergic to nurtec. allergic reactions can occur, even days after using. most common side effects were nausea, indigestion, and stomach pain. ask about nurtec odt. rsv can severely affect the lungs and lower airways. but i'm protected with arexvy. arexvy is a vaccine used to prevent lower respiratory disease from rsv in people 60 years and older. rsv can be serious for those over 60, including those with asthma, diabetes, copd, and certain other conditions. but i'm protected. arexvy is proven to be over 82% effective in preventing lower respiratory disease from rsv and over 94% effective in those with these health conditions. arexvy does not protect everyone and is not for those with severe allergic reactions to its ingredients. those with weakened immune systems may have a lower response to the vaccine. the most common side effects are injection site pain, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, and joint pain. i chose arexvy. rsv?
