>> well, we fought hard to avoid the type of dramatic cuts that the extreme maga republicans wanted to visit on the doj and the fbi and the atf whose primary job is to try to confront the massive amount of guns that are flooding our communities and resulting in people being killed and classrooms and movie theaters, and in malls. the type of so-called cuts that speaker johnson is talking about, largely cosmetic in nature. compared to what they wanted to do if they had their way which was to cut hundreds of millions of dollars if you can believe it, from the department of justice, or the fbi, or other law enforcement agencies. >> so, leader jeffries, do they not understand these are the agencies that crackdown on drug cartels. >> these are the very agencies that protect americans from terrorists whether we are talking about terrorists attacks in shopping malls or terrorists attacks in train stations, whether beer we are talking about terrorist attacks in airports. understand that or are they too stupid or fine with it. because donald trump wants it. it is like border i guess, donald trump says look fent knell let it flood and bloom it on me. the people are saying let hijackers have their way and drug cartels hehave their way because lsdonald trump told us do it. is that how congress runs now? >> seems to tbe the case in terms of whenever one is trying to figure out how to explain the unexplainable, the simple answer is always that when the low energy m-a-g-a king, donald trump says just, extreme maga republicans respond how high? that's icthe reason why and the continue to block a bipartisan comprehensive border security bill necessary to stand with our democratic allies, whether that's in ukraine or israel or in the defense of democracy and freedom we are continuing to see the republicans do the bidding of donald trump and undermined the best interest of the united states of america. >> so leader, what is it like listening to these republicans carp year after year after year about the need to pass a tough border security bill, and then a conservative like james langford gets together with democrats and house and senate gets together with the republicans and president and come up with toughest border security bill ever, and mike johnson and ma-g-a extremists, kill it. >> we clearly have a broken immigration system. and real challenges at the border. and under the leadership of president biden, partnering with house democrats, and senate democrats, and, of course, republican senators, like langford, we are ready, willing and able to try to find a way forward to establish a safe and strong secure and humane border while trying to also at the same time find legal pathways towards citizenship so we can continue to be a thriving nation of immigrants. that's a competitive riadvantag for us but again, republicans don't seem interested in solving problems on behalf of hard working american taxpayers. we need less chaos in washington, d.c. more common sense. common sense suggest we have to address the challenges in a bipartisan way. we are willing to continue to do that, we need partners on the other side of the aisle. >> leader jeffries, we just had the governor of new york here talking about crime in the subways and i know it's been brought out all over the country, that some migrants have engaged in crime. even i think it's been blown way out of the data that we have seen. but, even in light of that hype, you are telling me that what many concessions to the republicans to the border control bill, that in many cases, ththey represented and they written, that your conversations with speaker johnson dramatically changed when donald trump said no don't vote for the bill even though the bill had many of us questioning it and saying it was giving too much to the republicans. they wouldn't vote for their own bill under the orders of their presidential nominee to be donald trump? said kill this bill. it will help joe biden if we actually shut down the border. and i will take the blame. so donald, we blame you. we blame you because it's your fault you said you would take the blame. and so, he kills the bill, and then he cynically goes outing out about how the boarder is opening, mike. i am curious, how many americans are too stupid to tie the the two things together? >> the coverage of things like immigration is skewed. immigration and border is a difficult issue and it's a problem that needs to be addressed. as you pointed out, senator langford along with the cooperation of democrats in the senate and many republicans in the senate, came up with a solution. they had a solution donald trump knows it was a solution, and said no. we don't want that solution because i want to use it to run against joe biden this fall. the other aspect of this was the film clip we showed coming into the segment. and it gets to the way this election and these two men are covered. by major news papers. on sunday, "the new york times" what front page story about a poll that parts were devastating to the chances for joe biden to win reelection. on monday, on again on the front page above the fold they had another story about joe biden referencing the pole but referencing joe biden's age. why is it that they don't cover things that we just saw and heard, a man who is literally losing his mind in front of audiences coast to coast. his name is donald j trump. why is it that this is not covered in the similar fashion to the way joe biden's. >> it's a great question. >> is covered. joe biden knows how old he is. and joe biden does more in one hour in a day in the white house than donald trump has ever done in his presidency. and rev, i don't know about you, but i indictments. so he is running what he entered into politics he entered into politics on birthism denying a black president was born here. running on bias and racism that was always the major part of his campaign. and they will not write about that. they are telling us about one old white man rather than another old white man who is not only lost his mind, but when he had one it was bigoted. >> it begins at conception. things get very, very muddled and look in the united states senate, and see republicans can't even pass a bill to protect ivf. >> yeah. and i mean, tammy duckworth immediately when this happened she came out and said let's codifying ivf but this is not controversial legislation. like, this is a popular thing. millions of dollars in this country are spent on ivf and doctors who do it, they are powerful group. >> but it points out the extremism of republicans' position. you look at overturning roe for decades, 70% of the americans told gallup they were against the overturning of roe, roe overturned republicans want to go after contraception. clarence thomas talked about going after contraception next and going after marriage equality. saying these none of these should be constitutionally protected. this is where the republican party is going. they are getting more and more extreme on all of these issues. >> and going after contraception is such a loser. i mean, this is nobody in the country is like we shouldn't have contraception. i mean, it's crazy. and they have opened the door to this with this idea of embryonic personhood. and now we are down a rabbit hole and it's just impossible to, you know, to stop. >> it is hard to overstate how bad this is for republicans. i mean, you look at this states they control whether it's florida six week ban, you look at what's happening in texas. and just extreme positions. you look at what's happening across the country, you know, you are in a very, very progressive judge when a statewide contest in wisconsin in large part because wisconsin republicans still embraced an 1849 total ban. that's how extreme they are. and it's why they are going to keep losing. >> and abortion rights are passing in places like kansas and ohio and it's -- we are seeing the crossovers sort of transcend in issues. leek i like i said there's a lot of moral debate around abortion but ivf it's like people who cannot have the miracle of life if you are the party of life, get the miracle of life people who created ivf won the noble prize for god's sake because it's one of the great innovations in human history. >> i would also say one of the things about abortion that we are seeing is that the people who are really having the haror stories coming out are not women trying to get abortions because there's an abortion pill it's women who are pregnant right who have had miscarriage and now need to take the abortion pill and doctors won't treat because they are scared of being prosecuted. and that's we are seeing it in texas. these are people they are not necessarily pro choice but don't want to bleed out when they have a miscarriage. and i think that is really abouta bad look for republicans. >> bet we and what was important for them and generation of people who fought in the great wars and who defended democracy, and what's really at stake for people who think ukraine doesn't matter. that i believe that this is the front line of a -- of a war on democracy. and i think that we are a nation of grandchildren. and i think the opportunities that we have sitting around the table, i think we are provided by people who struggled to live the american way of life. and what is that? and when it's-- when it's at stake, what are we willing to do to defend it. if that means going to the ballot, absolutely you have to do that. for me, it's more than that. for me, it's defending a place where my grandparents came from, and the idea that they should be able to vote for their own leaders. they should be able to pray in their own churches and should be able to do everything in the way that we have been able to do everything in this country. and it's extremely important. and i think that is we will not. people will say that guy has a lot in him. he was wide-awake. seemed to relish the moment. did not seem to tire much and in fact, improved as the speech moved along. he showed energy and focus. blurred some words and thoughts, maintained a brisk pace. almost never spoke softly. sometimes he yelled. as if had been reading up on truman. growing democratic fears on the age and acuity. they succeeded. at least for a while, they said the democrats at the end of this speech were pretty much giddy. with us now, senate majority leader chuck schumer of new york. senator, i've been saying this morning, i've been in a few of these. i do not think i have ever seen any state of the union and all my time where one party was back on their heels as much as donald trump's mega party was last night. >> you bet. call me giddy, call me exhilarated. this speech showed that america is strong and joe biden is strong. you are right. one of the most fascinating scenes for me was of the republicans. they were not out there yelling and screaming. as long as she is the representative the republican party, impetuous, angry, pro- life, that's fine. let her be the face of the party. mainly, the republicans were sitting there looking at their faces. it was a great moment when he re talked about how president trump had lied about 9/11 and then looked at them and said you know that is true and they all looked down. they knew he was right. first, the vision for the middle class in america, this was a speech that a whole lot ha of detail. a lot of what i want to do and how i want to get it done. it also was a speech that showed joe biden as that fight in him. when he talks about the middle class, when he talks about the things he believes in, he has fight, he has strength. we walked out of that speech exhilarated. this is joe biden americans are going to see. now that the jump is the nominee, that's one part of thea face but joe biden is. he gets things done together with the democratic senate majority. the greatest two years we've had in a long time in terms of production for middle-class people for american values but that takes a lot of time and effort. now he's out there selling what he did, talking about what he wants to do and much more of a campaign mode, that is just fine. anyone who sat and listened to that speech knows that joe biden is going to win the election and have a great second term. i am excited. >> jonathan is here. he's got a question. >> i met january 6th, i said 9/11. >> jonathan, it really i was fascinating. seeing how the republicans looked down, i thought they were humiliated when he brought up january the sixth. because they know. mike johnson knows. got the power based on the why? again, the republicans look so weak last night. >> january 6, the violence happened in that very chamber. senator schumer, thank you for being with us this morning. there were a few points where the president really took the fight for republicans. two in particular right off the top. one was on ukraine funding saying vladimir putin is not going to stop with ukraine. and then secondly, trying to change it around immigration which, to this point, republicans had gotten the better of him. because republicans abandon the bipartisan deal, the white house thinks a chance to change the story as well. do you think what we saw last t night could lead to some legislative projects or do you feel better about the politics? >> frankly because democrats in the senate with joe biden's help, put together a strong bipartisan proposal. this is some left-wing proposal. it is endorsed by the wall street journal editorial page. right-wing conservatism in america. it is endorsed by the border guard union which is been extreme and right wing. it is endorsed by the chamber of commerce and until donald trump opened his mouth, it would've had to respond to the republicans and then he gave us a gift. he said i do not want to do it because i want more chaos at the borders of what will help me in the election. this is a man in a party said we should let it fester for another year so we map lyrical advantage. he had a resolution. he talked about it. he talked about the border guards. he talked about turning away the fentanyl from those machines that could detect them. he talked about things that we could do but in a strong way that vibrated with the american people. just as we saw in the third congressional district, we are now on our front foot, not our back foot. that is a major change and i give my senators a whole lot of credit for helping us make that happen. >> let's talk about the economy. right now, we just got a new report in. breaking news once again, the wall street journal reports 275,000 new jobs. you look at all the numbers, they are a story. the best jobs over the past three years, below 4% for the first time in 60 years. new business starts up. you look at manufacturing up. you been in politics a long time. how long does it take for the reality to catch up with the expectation? either we don't send or say we can't use and population centers. when we start articulating the parameters of a peace plan and go to the united nations. for years and years, the fundamental document that guided peacemaking was resolution 242. when we updated? >> i agree with you. we are seeing very strong job growth a year or so ago. who would've expected we could be averaging over 250,000 new jobs a month and seeing inflation come down. that is what we see in this morning's report. 275,000 jobs in february signaling a strong labor market. the longest stretch of unemployment, under 4% that we have seen in 50 years and really, no evidence in this wage data with wage increases that could create inflationary flashers. americans are getting ahead. they are getting solid wade wage increases. there is really no evidence of pressure coming from the labor market. we have excellent, strong performance. the u.s. economy is performing better than any advanced nation around the world. our strength is. >> madam secretary, asked the question repeatedly. the source of the strength and resilience. how the economy has outperformed expectations of economists on wall street, main street across the world. what is behind this economic engine that just keeps moving forward? >> first of all, we have seen a big increase in labor supply that was enabling strong growth, increased in participation in the labor market. policies that the biden administration put in place during the pandemic served to ensure that those who lost work would not be permanently scarred as they were after the financial crisis in 2008. we directed enough money to state and local governments but they were able to keep employees on the payroll. with those programs, we got people back to work quickly and president biden has been focused on investing in our economy, putting me. rebuilding bridges and roads across the nation, expanding access to the internet, investing in industries of the future like semiconductors and clean energy and the incentives that of been put in place have generated $650 billion of private investment in manufacturing and clean energy. we are seeing areas that the country has not seen a lot of opportunity. we've seen great growth on the coast. country has not seen good jobs created. that has changed over the last several years. that certain private investment is also buoying a recovery. >> that is all the time that we have for this weekend. will be back tomorrow at 6 a.m. eastern for the start of a new week of "morning joe." until then, have a great rest of your weekend. weekend.
